it's matte, but there is a label b173rw01 V5, but it is written on the PCB (printed circuit) at the bottom of the screen B173RW01 V0 CTRL BD

Maybe this is normal and it is indeed a V5, now I wonder if I was right to write my post above ....

Please take a photo of the label on the rear of the panel and share. A legitimate V5 will look like this:

    i was wrong, i perform a everest and it's trully V5

I thought being scammed, but you can trust bomoogo and sally, I am telling my screen, now that I know it's a V5

Again, here's a mail I received from Sally:

    Dear Shakka
PLEASE note! For AUO original manufacturer B173HW01 V0/V3/V5 , their PCB material is THE SAME.
Nno matter you buy from AUO original manufacturer ,the PCB should show B173HW01 V0 on PCB.
If you have any problem with the screen, please let me know, and WE DON'T CHANGE LABEL, it comes from AUO.

    And you ask B173HW01 V5, not B173RW01 V5

    Sally
is a mail i receive from Sally

    Hello, new to these forums, just got a new XPS17 L702x (GT555m, i7-2630QM, 2 x 320 HDDs, 1600 x 900 LCD).

I have swapped out one of the HDDs for a Curcial M4 128 SSD, fitted the backlit keyboard and today I fitted the B173HW01 V4.

The screen that came stock was an AUO B173RW01 V3 (1600 x 900), it was bright and colourful, but viewing angles where completely unacceptable.

Thanks to OP and all others for advice, I am now very happy with the new screen.
PS. The screen cost 200 Euros from ebay, I had contacted many sellers but they would send compatible screens and not the V4.
The seller I got the screen from made it very clear that it was a proper V4 and took only 24hrs from paying until it arrived.

Hi Puremind I am also just got Asus G74sx with CMO1724 panel in it. Yeah color temperature seems to be cold and I tried to set some adjustments in nVidia panel like gamma, contrast etc. but not well enough. Could do share calibrated profile will obliged it.
I am also wander why Notebookcheck posted that CMO1726 doesn't cover even sRGB while you tested wide NTSC color range or they was properly paid for such analysis.

Could anyone recommend a good place to order the AUO B173HW01 v.4? I'm in England, so a UK based seller would be ideal.

And also, would replacing the screen void my warranty with Dell?

This is a good address: Kuzotronic.com Based in the UK and reliable.

Also, no, your warranty will not void if you change the screen. But if the screen fails, Dell will not replace it, you'll have to contact the reseller of the screen.

    Dear friends,

Recently I have installed a new AUO B173HW01 v.4 on my DELL XPS L701x. After using the screen for one or two hours I began suffering severe eye strain and irritation (I feel the surface of my eyes like burning).

I have been googling, searching for people with the same problem, and found other users suffering eye strain, headaches and nausea related with white-led backlighting.

I think that this problem may be caused by

    1) Personal special sensivity
    2) The procedure used for dimming
    3) The extreme light intensity of leds inside the w-led screens
    4) The white-led spectrum (too blue)
    5) Other sources not taken into account by me due to lack of information

Using a photodiode and a oscilloscope as a simple light-intensity meter I found that the dimming procedure of white-led backlight is PWM (the leds are turned on and off and the duration of the "on" and "off" periods varies according to the brightness level). When the screen is dimmed to its lowest degree the eye is receiving 200 short flashes of maximum intensity. When the user pushes the "more brightness" button, the eye receives 200 flashes with increasing on time. With maximum brightness level all the leds are on always.

I have compared the maximum intensity of a Dell precision M60 screen with the AUO B173HW01 v.4. The AUO screen generates more than tree times more light intensity than the M60 screen (it has CCFL backlight).

One chip inside the LCD white-led screens is the "led string driver". Most led-driver manufacturers use an external resistor to set the string of leds (located at the top of the screeen) maximum current. Replacing the value of this resistor it is possible to reduce the maximum current-to-light led conversion. I think that this change can reduce the extremely high light intensity flashes that the eye receives.

One chip inside the screen (AUO L144i-44) is the led driver core circuit. I have been unable to find the datasheet of this chip. So it is difficult to locate the led current limiting external resistor. Does any user in the forum have this datasheet ?

I have been thinking of using car-darkener window film to put it on the AUO screen in order to reduce the amount of light comming from it.

I would appreciate any information related with reducing eye-strain caused by white-led screen backlighting. I need to work many hours with my laptop and today it's nearly impossible to find new laptops with CCFL backlight.

    Thank you very much.

    Hey all,

I've read a good few pages of this thread and I think I want to buy a B173HW01 V5.
I've found two suppliers which seem to be cheap and reliable based on what I've read.
Which would ye recommend me to purchase from?

NEW B173HW01 V5 17.3'' LCD LAPTOP SCREEN EXACT | eBay
    or
    O'TOP Technology Corp.

I e-mail the second supplier so I hope to know how much it will cost me by tomorrow.
Which is more reliable, is there any reason to go for one over the other, or is there a better supplier I have missed?

Also one last question, is there any reason I should get the glossy screen over the matte?
I know the differences between them and have being using glossy screens in laptops for years, so am used to those, but I have noticed recently that almost all other screens are actually matte, including most TV's and Monitors so I am used to those too, infact I never noticed the difference until I started looking into swapping out the stock screen in my L702x  Don't laugh please :)

    Thanks.

Last week I was asking myself the same question as I was choosing between those two vendors of an AUO B173HW01 V5. The screenintaipei seems to be the safest choice, but their screen was of grade A (one dead pixel allowed). So I contacted Sally from O'Top Technology for a quote and inquired about a screen. She indicated it will be a grade A+ screen (no dead pixels), also she matched the competitor's price. That led me to choose O'Top over screenintaipei. I have installed the screen today and it is a real v5 and a real beauty.

    Thanks for the reply.
I have contacted O'Top using their contact page O'TOP Technology Corp.
but so far I haven't had any reply. I might try send a mail to Sally if I can find an address for her on the site as I would also like to get the A+ grade.

    Yeah! :)
I made few upgrades to my system but I would rate them in the following order.

Which was the best upgrade on my system?
    1. AUO FHD Screen(the colour is amazing!)
    2. SSD as Primary/System Disk(and Seagate Momentus XT 500GB as 2nd HDD)
    3. 16GB Ram

Although adding the SSD makes a significant performance boost but still the screen upgrade was the best of all.

And after overclocking the display card a bit, my WEI score is 7.1(due to graphics) which I think is not bad.

If anyone asks what upgrade he/she should do first, I would definitely recommend swapping the screen first then add SSD.

It is normal if the screen goes black after the the windows loads when you have a replacement screen installed.
You need to download the latest Nvidia Graphics Driver and install.
You should be able to logon to windows using safe mode with network.

The recommendation is to uninstall the existing Dell Nvidia Driver first but my experience is that the newer Nvidia Drivers replaces the Dell's drivers correctly without causing any issue.

When you run the setup.exe, select "Custom Installation" option then select "Perform a clean installation".

So you can try installing the latest driver first and if it doesn't work then uninstall the graphics drivers completely then install the Nvidia drivers.

The version I am using at the moment is 301.42.

just upgraded to a AUO V5 screen for my L702x...a huge benefit over the crappy 1600X900 screen that I had..the viewing angles now make the laptop more usable in all lighting and being matte screen is much better IMHO

I followed the steps in removing the screen on the beginning of this thread...but I chose not to remove the web cam...as I could get my hand down the back of the screen to remove the 40 pin block connector without the need to take the Webcam off , although I had to keep the screen at a angle to do so

great upgrade and would recommend it to anyone wanting a better more usable machine

bought mine from LCD Panel_Studio Technology Co.,Ltd for $150 us delivered to my door {Australia } by DHL in three days

I've been looking through the information for the B173HW01 v5, and have seen on the O'TOP site that it is a 30 pin, and on the yslcd site that it's 40. Are these two different screens, or is there just a typo on one? If no typo, which one is the right one?

The correct number is 40-pins. It is a dual-channel LVDS interface. Below is a pic of how the label on the display panel will look (if it is a Dell allocated panel).

Awesome. I am talking to YSLCD to get a B173HW01 v4 sent out. It has better color and contrast from the specs I read. Should be pretty good.

So... I'm wondering if this will fix my problem... Yeah, I ordered the panel because my screen is suspected to be broken, but also because I just wanted another one. However, I"m also suspecting the inverter. I have a light colored (as if the color matters, but whatever) line horizontally, about 1-1/8" from the top of the display, and a yellow line about 3-1/2" from the right side of the display, both full length. Everything below the horizontal line flickers, except when the screen is really light. When it's black, it shakes like Michael J. Fox after a pot of coffee. Plugged in to an external monitor (my TV at the moment), there is no flicker, ruling out the GPU. It happens at all times, whether it's in windows, or in the BIOS setup. From what I'm seeing, it's the LCD screen 90% of the time. Any ideas?

The L701x/AUO B173HW01 does not use an inverter since the backlighting is LED based, not incandescent based.

It must be either your current panel or the LVDS cable causing the issues. Although not required, I typically replace the cable as well when installing a new display panel.

Ok, so I replaced the screen, and now the screen flicker is gone. My new problem is that I have 2-1/2 screens. Basically, the screen is divided up into thirds, with only half of the bottom third showing, all are identical. Any ideas?

    ***EDIT***

Ok, so I uninstalled / reinstalled the nVidia drivers, and it's as good as new. Maybe I'm just seeing things, but this monitor looks amazing! Colors seem a lot richer, and everything seems a little bit sharper. Needless to say, I'm loving it over the screen flicker for sure!

^ I don't know but this part of the add could be a hint that it is not genuine,

    Compatible with:

    AUO B173HW01 V.4

Could always send the seller a question about it.

I am now looking for a 1080p for my L702 I recently purchased. The 1600 x 900 is not really that bad of a screen but since looking at the excellent 1080p screen in my xps15, I want one on the xps17 too.

I just got a screen replacement for my L702X XPS17.

I got the AUO B173HW01 V4 here: New AUO17 3" B173HW01 V4 FHD LED Screen for Dell "FedEx or EMS Express " | eBay for $145 shipped (Ordered Thursday, shipped Friday from Taiwan - arrived on Monday in the US). It was the exact AUO and it's absolutely unbelievably awesome. My original screen was the 900p AUO139E aka B173RW01. It wasn't so bad - but the colors seemed pretty washed out - now they pop! I downloaded the color profile from the first post in this thread - and they seem to be less saturated now - but still great. I just need to get used to the smaller text on websites with the 1080p screen. However, I'm really happy with the replacement. I'll probably try to sell the old screen on ebay for a few bucks.

I had a Dell tech guy coming to my house to do a warranty replacement of the topcover - so I asked him if he would replace the screen for me - he asked for $10 for it - so I paid him - I didn't want to screw up myself.

I'm using the screen at 90% brightness right now, 100% seemed too bright (I never thought I would say that about a laptop screen). The colors are amazing! Can't wait to download some 1080p videos :)

You're running it at 90% brightness? Is that in bright lit room?

My screen is the same as your old screen for now. I ordered a screen from laptopscreen.com and got a CheMei matte. Although it was a huge improvement over the 900p, it had a defect and I had to send it back. Gonna get the same screen you bought off ebay since they advertise it as a direct part and it will be the AUO instead of anything else.

I have to say that so far my buying experience with laptopscreen.com has been really good. All I had to do was send in pictures of the defect and they sent me a return label to ship it back to them.

I finally got around to installing a AUO B173HW01 V4 that I got from laptopscreen.com and it is everything I expected, absolutely beautiful!

My experience with laptopscreen.com was good all the way around from my first order to my replacement order. The AUO B173HW01 V4 is the only screen available to order as a exact part.

Hi i changed my screen about 2 month ago to the AuO v5 matte. I bought it in Germany and the seller ships around the European Union. It was the best thing to do. This is my first matte screen on a "big" notebook i used to have on in my netbook but after changing the LG 900p glossy to AuO 1080p matte i think i will never switch back to glossy again. The angles and the colors with the right icc profile of the matte screen are just so awesome. With the LG max 3 Person could watch a movie and still see 90% of everything but with the AuO everybody in a huge room can see a clearl picture from almost every angle. Btw the AuO v5 matte (exactly this) cost me 130,- € they offered me for 90,-€ a kompatible one but wanted the AuO so i payed 40 € just to get exaclty the matte AuO B173HW01 V5

"the latest Nvidia Graphics Driver " is this from Dell Driver download or straight from Nvidia site?
I noticed that Dell has "Nvidia Graphic Driver " version 8.17.12.6639,A04 will this do the trick?

    Thanks.

You need the correct HW version, which is "0A", not "1A".

This is how a Dell compatible version will look -

Hi guys, I'm a little late to the party so hopefully someone is still checking in on this thread that can help me. First off I have the XPS L702X LED MATTE 1080P FHD screen. According to the sticker on the display I have the CHIMEI N173HGE -L11 Rev C1 it doesn't have a hardware version or firmware version. The reason I'm replacing it is because the screen started getting lines across the screen which multiplied to 5 lines over time. it doesn't happen when using a external monitor so I know its not the graphics card. Anyways, I'm confused as there seems to be a lot of information that is spread out over 3 years. So some of the links are no longer working. I would like to get AUO B173HW01 V5 which I believe is the matte screen and wanted to know if anyone knows if it is compatible with my screen. I love the matte finish and want to stick to the 1080p screen which everyone seems to agree it looks best. Also I have emailed Sally at Otoptek for pricing but if anyone knows other reliable resellers in Canada or US please pm me thanks.

    Hi,

I bought the ChiMei N173HGE L21 and the screen looks very good, but the colours look at little off to me.

I have tried searching but not found any specific colour profiles for this screen, has anyone made a good calibration they can share for this screen?

    Thanks

Hi, Not sure if anyone is looking at this thread any more. I have an XPS L701x laptop, bought in Jan 2011, the screen is finally on its way out and I need a replacement. If I plug the laptop into a monitor via the HDMI the output is fine so it's definitely screen or cable. The screen I have in my laptop is an LP173WD1 (TL)(A2). I bought a new cable, which made no difference, so definitely the screen. So I looked for an LP173WD1 (TL)(A2) online and was pleased fine loads of sellers. So I got one. When I fitted the screen it only worked with a VGA driver (the MS one), when it booted or in safe mode. If I install the correct driver (Nvidia) the screen is just black, but the laptop is working fine otherwise. So I took the screen out and found it wasn't an LP173WD1 (TL)(A2) but a slightly different screen LP173WD1 (TL)(E1)... This was listed on the website as being compatible. I have since sent it back and purchased another, this time making sure the website states it is an LP173WD1 (TL)(A2), however what arrived in the post yesterday was another LP173WD1 (TL)(E1).... I haven't tried fitting it yet as sure it won't work. Does anyone know where I can get a like for like LP173WD1 (TL)(A2) screen from??? Thanks...
