I ordered on 10/16 and my EDD of 11/9 has not changed this far. My only changes were to the 820QM and RGBLED screen. The 9 cell battery was the only option as far as batteries go when I made the purchase.

Ikjadoon: Do you really think that you are going to get anything for it being delayed? Im curious to see what you might get just because as far as I can tell, we are all delayed. I highly doubt Dell is going to try to make good with anyone. On the otherhand, it doesnt hurt to try....

Im not really angry about the delay, stuff happens and whatnot. Im angry about being lied to. All they needed to tell me was "we have some issues getting all the parts to your laptop collected and there is going to be a delay" rather than waiting until I called and asked and then lying about it.

I think actually it might be the wireless card. Now the Intel 5300 has been replaced with a Dell card.

Ha, maybe. The only reasonable thing I would even expect would be Windows 7. Hardware might only delay it even more, but throwing a Win7 image on there shouldn't be too much hassle, I would say.

    Some news would have been nice: 10/13 - 10/26 - 10/29 - 11/5 (!) and none with an explanation.

seems to be a trend...all of us have 9 cell batteries w/ our orders....

and i agree that dell should have told us it was a pre-order...

when were the first batch of systems with i7 supposed to be shipped?

The earliest Ive heard of for shipping is Monday 10/26 which is now gone :(

The thing that adds salt to the wound on this is that it may not be the processor or chipset that is on delay. Thats just poor planning on Dell's part to have any delay for a part other than the newest tech to be included in the laptop.

mine still shows EDD of 10-27. I ordered XPS 1645 Intel Core i7 720QM RGB LED. But, since other people's EDDs are getting delayed (from 10-26 and 10-29 etc), it just seems that they haven't gotten to my order on the list to delay it. keeping my fingers crossed.

osmath: you at least have gotten more than I. On Thursday and Friday, I got told they didnt know what part was backordered after talking with two diffrent reps.

Besides, its likely that everyone at Dell will just tell you whatever you want to hear and get you off the phone.

I ordered on October 5th and my EDD has always been November 4th. Yesterday I got a call from Dell, and the guy said that he was sorry for the delay in shipping my laptop (which is weird because the EDD has never changed), and that the reason was there were some compatibility issues with the software and Windows 7. He said the site you go to to register for the Win7 upgrade crashed and all this other stuff. He never mentioned a hardware thing. But I find it hard to believe that a software issue with an optional OS upgrade would hold up production of the laptops.

I asked if my laptop would come pre-installed with Win7 and he said no. "It's actually better this way because if you do not like Windows 7 you will have the option of switching back to Vista." How thoughtful! I would have ended up installing Win7 Professional anyway, so I'd have to go through the same process either way.

I'm sorry to hear about the delays in shipping your laptops.

FX2000, good point. I think this may just be a waste of time at this point. All I want is my laptop in a timely manner. I dont think Dell has any idea of how to do that at this point. Their service is crap too as far as Im concerned.

From what I got told yesterday, the earlier you ordered, the better off you are. Hopefully I will only have the one delay, but it you ordered mid-October or later, you might be waiting for a while.

No, this is a code I got out of the October catalog I received a few days ago. A valid code. It works online but pulls up a different configuration (build) than what's in the catalog. In fact, the code expires November 16. From looking through this thread, it looks like Dell recycles the E-codes. However, I do see where it states that offers are subject to change, so they obviously have the right to modify their offers.

Nope, I requested a quote from my Dell business account manager, who quoted me ~£1500 for that spec (inc 3 year business warranty), so I sent him a screen grab/link to the XPS16 consumer website, and after a bit of saber rattling, he was kind enough to do a pricematch on the "advertised" price.

Of course, I was 98% sure that the £1079 price was incorrect anyway (given the inability to place an order through that part of the website, and that fact it was only marginally more expensive than the core2duo varient), but I pushed the matter and he caved :p

ETA is now the 25th of November though :( Oh well, I'll cope :p

I dont know if anyone has noticed but prices have gone up on dell canada's website. 256 gb SSD is 350 now vice 250. Also if you order the SSD its a delay of 7 days... says when you select it on the order page.

    Ibrahim;
Sorry for the disappointing delay your going thru.... :(
Call them on Monday and see if they can get you some sort of *compensation*, at least. You may be able to. I had delays like this with my 1530 and Mini 9 Netbook. I netted some nice E-Gift Cards from Dell, due to part delays, and notifications that it had *shipped* when in fact; my order hadn't. I called them out on my *undue duress* as a loyal Dell Customer. :p

Well, sorry for stepping in to 1645 thread, but I've been watching it for a while and I see many comments about the shipment delays. My story is about 1640 actually.

I've ordered mine on 9/21. It went to In Production state the next day. In 1-3 days the i7 version was released and I really wanted to change my order - a call to Dell wasn't successful at all - they said they can't change or cancel the order (with no fee) as it's In Production. So, I've thought whatever... My EDD was 10/14.

Then I've got notification that my order is delayed, the new EDD is 10/21 and there was an option to cancel the order.

So, I've took it and canceled my order right away as Dell support wasn't any nice not allowing me to change my order couple days after I placed it. So, going with Asus G51J off Amazon - no RBGLED, heavy - but i7, dual HDD bays, much better GPU and no tax.

Sorry Dell, but you don't deserve my $s (you've got good engineers designed XPS Studio 16, but your sales suck). And sorry if I offended anybody.

If I could jump on it at that price I would in an instant. Here on Dell Australia it is an extra AU$959, around US$890.

I'm annoyed at the moment due to my Dell rep telling me that when win 7 was released there would be a price hike, so I took his advice and bought (assuming they wouldn't be that low - my mistake). Not only was there no price hike, but professional 7 is included compared to the home premium I would receive via the upgrade program, and the intel 5300 is included (previously +$30).

Dell need to get there act together. Most of you guys are ahead of me with your EDD's. I ordered on the 15th and I still don't even have one.

It's a great laptop...I was very close to buying this (from another source tho), but I went with the SXPS because:

    better screen
    better battery
    cheaper SSD upgrade price
better speakers (You can barely hear the ASUS in Best Buy)
I don't play games that much...so the 260m is more than I need

Anyone trusting ANYTHING that Dell tells them over the phone or e-mail is just begging for a heaping spoonfull of disappointment.

Just sit back and relax. your laptop will be here sooner or later. I honestly dont think Dell does a damn thing when you call to check your order status, i think they just stare at their screen for a few seconds, maybe send off an email to a friend of theirs with some funny jokes in it, and then respond that your laptop is almost done with the production stage and should be shipping soon.

From as much runaround as i had getting my orders placed i honestly dont think there is any consequences for not providing good customer service. I think their SOP is literally "Just get them off the phone so you can take a sales call."

Quick question...does the 9-cell battery create a bulge out of the bottom of the notebook?

    Hey all,

I placed an order several weeks back, like most of the forum members here, and am becoming increasingly concerned about this purchase decision.

There are several things causing me concern:

    1) Dell's poor communication from the outset. I was never informed that my purchase was in fact a "pre-order".
    2) Constantly changing prices in the dell.ca website. It seems you cannot configure the same system for the same price two days in a row. For example, I really wanted a 1920x1080 resolution screen. The WLED version would be fine. The XPS could be configured with the 1920 WLED screen for $100CAD IF you ordered a Core 2 Duo. If you ordered a Core i7, this same upgrade cost $300! ? I even saved a system into my cart to demonstrate this issue to a Dell CS agent, but the system in my cart no longer shows the screen options I had selected earlier.
    3) There is also a thread in the forums here indicating that the ATI 4670 is not running in State 1 (High Power 3D) during gaming. Suggestions are that this is due to thermal issues.

Are these systems coming soon? Is performance what it is cracked up to be? Is Dell customer service really this bad BEFORE my purchase? I can't imagine how horrible it will be after the sale is done.

Anyone care to share some thoughts? I'm starting to think that the Asus G51j-A1 is looking like an attractive alternative.

    Myles

I'm guessing people with EDD of 10/27 already moved to early november, :S. My EDD still is going towards the 11/2, but it now prives me from my sleep as it can come in mid november in which case I won't be able to claim the laptop since I'll only be traveling US for 3 days.

I don't think so. For what I've seen it's not that big of a deal. It also helps to the heat situation as it provides better air flow.

I just don't know whether to place an order now...or to wait until some of you take delivery. Also...logic says they may cut prices a bit when the Windows 7 mania dies down and the I7's are in more supply.

    Thoughts?

No it does not sit level...it is designed to make the rear sit higher than the front so as to promote better airflow on a desk. It's actually a very nice design. There are great pics of it at the bottom of this review (the white SXPS has the 9-cell):

If you want a 6-cell, you can get them off of ebay or amazon for $60-$70. Just make sure you check the laptop accessories section on Dell's website to see what the 6-cell battery model number is to make sure it's the correct one on ebay.

Totally understood. The 9-cell makes a lot of sense in that case...
