They usually only get the *PreAuthorization* once, at the beginning when you place your order..before it gos into Production. This is to verify funds are available for the full Purchase Price. Then, you are not supposed to be fully charged til your system is about ready to ship (or before it gos into the shipping stage).

They were only supposed (as far as I know), to get that PreAuth' once after you ordered and before it went in the Production Process. Your card being *expired* could flag a problem with Dell. You may want to contact Dell and just get *verified*, detailed information from them on that. (and get back up of the conversation *case number* so you have yourself covered). :D

I've just cancelled my order (placed on the 15th). According to the quote it should have been delivered now, but it has not yet entered into production. Instead I'll pick up an Asus g51j + an intel 80gb SSD for the same price.

The 15th of October? I was under the impression that anyone who had ordered that "late" had the EDD in early to mid November. (My order on the 16th had had an EDD of 11/9 and entered the build phase a few days ago) Ah well, good luck with your new purchase!

I was sent this again today by a dell representative:

The XPS 1645 product is a new product and most of our customers have ordered the same computer hence they have a long lead time. One or two parts on the order is on backorder and we are expecting the parts this weekend.

I do have to say that they have been keeping me updated about eveything. I ordered through the EPP website and the representative that took my order has been keeping me updated without me having to ask. Their not all bad you know.

Also, has anybody else been told their order would be expidited? My rep told me that he put in a request for me and it was approved.

I complained when I placed my order. They had put a hold on my dell preferred account and never told me that there was a problem. After one week, I called. I complained and they said they could not expedite orders and that all orders were treated the same. My order is supposed to ship tomorrow. Maybe I'll call and complain tomorrow.

So, I have been debating the 720 versus 820. I got thinking though that I would see more performance bang for the buck my going SSD.

    Thoughts?

You would definitely see much more performance boost if you went with a good SSD since the HDD is almost always the bottleneck in a system.

I would definitely choose the SSD over the 820 proc. I've seen 2 XPS 16 running side by side. One had a SSD and the other a HDD. Boot time is significantly faster with the ssd.
You won't see a big difference at boot time using a i7 720 vs 820 processor...or maybe a very little one.
And boot time is just an example...

I'd Agree the SSD would help more.

My only qualms towards the SSD is cost/GB and worrying about longevity. SSDs have a limited # of writes, however, the #s are going up.

The last problem which had been discussed just the other day on slashdot.org was certain SSD chipsets have a high failure rate.

I would have preferred to have an ETA then, but I didn't get an ETA at all. Even if I tried the call center staff were playing hot potato, offloading my call to anyone else at first chance. Once I found the right person, I cancelled fairly easily. After giving a reason, I was surprised that they didn't even try to talk me into a compromise or stop me from cancelling.

I wish i had gone with the 256GB SSD, I was at my budget limit buying two suped up laptops for my wife and I, but I closed an IT contract which gives me a nice new pile of play money. Last thing I'm going to do is modify my order. I figure I'll pick up one of the new intels when they get released. Bummer though.

256GB SSD is just too much money ... for me ... by the time I fill up the 128GB ... hopefully SSDs would have dropped to a more affordable rate.

Well, same as the person who posted above me, my order was "changed" as well. I called the Dell guys and they said that my order was never "processed" even though it said it was in production for 4 weeks. So they just cancel my order and made another. My purchase date was 9-25 and original EDD was 10-26 before it was updated to 11-2, but now it is 11-30.

    Hoo-freaking-ray!

Interested in hearing if anybody else ran into this sh-thole of a dilemma.

AAAAAAAHHHHHHH What the hell is Dell's problem?? Just like a few others in here, now my order was mysteriously canceled today!! ???

It was supposed to ship tomorrow and now it's delayed another month! I've been talking to a million different CS reps and all they could tell me was that there was a part unavailable so they had to start a whole new effin order. Funny thing was, is that no one could tell me what the part was. So I compared my old order with the new one and the only part that is now different is the Bluetooth. I had originally ordered it with the only BT option at the time (the Bluetooth DW 370 USB module). Guess what it changed to...NOT the "USB module" but the regular "2.1+EDR" version...which still has the same part number though. So basically they canceled my order because of a friggin clerical error on their part and now I am slated to get my SXPS 16 on 23 Nov even tho I ordered it on 26 Sep. And the final turd on the pile is the fact that they will not give me Windows 7!!!!!!!!!! AAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHH

That's 2 months!!! In 2 months, my system will probably become old technology as they release some new hot technology. Sheesh.

Anyways, that Asus is now hot in my sights right now and I can guarantee that they are going lose some business thanks to negative recommendations from me (it helps being head of IT in my unit, especially since Windows 7 is now out and many people are asking about upgrading their XP laptops). So I hope for both of our sake that I can talk to someone who can speed things up before I deploy.

Sorry for the rant (I'm sure you can understand and feel my pain), but I am posting in the hopes that it'll help someone else. So please check your order status everyday. Dell never told me this happened and I would have been screwed if I didn't catch this today.

I also have cancelled my order. They charged my credit card a couple of days after I ordered (on the 10th) and then provided no unsolicited feedback what-so-ever.

I eventually was told by email that my ETA was the 11th Nov but this was only in response to a query as to why my order was canncelled and reissued (they did not actually answered that question either). This ETA never updated on the website or on their automated phone system so I doubt this was actually true. Based on the fact there would be plenty of people ahead of me and it is not shipping yet I felt that this date was rubbery at best.

Final straw was when they screwed up my "new" order (they downgraded me to a lesser version of Office when I had already paid for the better, more expensive one) and after being transferred 3 times and the person even could not even check it to verify the details I really had had it. Strangely they did not have to transfer me to cancel the order   . They would have had to cancel/redo the order anyway and I just would have went to the bottom of the queue probably ...

Good luck with the new XPS 16. I may order one again in the future but only at a time when Dell has their act together and I will receive it in a time frame when I need it (I really needed it by the 6th) - oh, and I will ultimately get what I pay for ...

I haven't cancelled my order, but I'm kinda starting to wish I had bought the ASUS G51j instead. I placed my order on 10/6 with an EDD of 11/9. If they screw with my order it'll be hard to resist not canceling it. . .

Oh my god, they better not start messing around with everyone's orders. Mine says it should be arriving 2nd November and I've been speaking several times with several reps and they all assured me, laptop would be there before or on the EDD, never after it.

Isn't that kind of false advertisement?

My EDD has been 11-3-09, it hasn't changed yet. If I get delayed as long as everyone else is saying. I'm probably going to cancel my order as well and go get an ASUS G60 that they have at Best Buy. They would be better gaming laptops for sure, just not as good of a processor or RAM. But they have the GTX260 for a video card. One is $999 which has the 2.1 Ghz C2D and then for $1299 they have a model with 2.53 Ghz C2D and 2 320GB HDD and 9Cell battery.

My EDD is also 11-3-09. Let's see if they ship it out at most by Monday or not. I am also tired of the long wait time on my order. I ordered on Sept. 28th with an original EDD of 10-27. I think that they are supposed to start shipping them out for people with EDD of 11-2-09.

Yeah a rep told me the orders placed in September would start shipping by Friday. But then a post earlier said that Dell wouldn't have the parts until Monday, so that's when they would start shipping. I'm actually very patient, and I don't really have a problem with waiting until late in November to get the laptop, but I understand that a lot of you with delayed EDDs are getting anxious for your laptops. And then to top it off, some people are getting their orders messed with. Just think: in six months from now you won't even care that you had to wait an extra week or two to get your 1645.

I agree, it's just that I am also in need of a new laptop. My two-year old 17" macbook pro(which I bought thinking that they would be of superior build quality) started to swell/expand from the bottom of the screen and is now shutting down unexpectedly--so long for he build quality. I am looking forward to my 720qm i7 dell 1645. Can't wait for the order to get shipped. It's been stuck in the 'in-production' stage for the last 4 1/2 weeks. :(

Any luck with shipments of xps 1645?
I think a good tell when the 1645's are on their way to our doors is when the service manual shows up on the dell support website:
    http://support.dell.com/support/edocs/systems/sxl1645/

right now, still not posted. Keep checking this link and the day the manual shows up, 1645's will be enroute.

The 1645's counterpart, the i7 alienware m15x, their manuals are already up and running.
    http://support.dell.com/support/edocs/systems/M15x/en/index.html
specs on these shows i7 and Win7. I'm sure some of these guys already got their machines.

Here's another alternative to the Asus... if you are strictly looking for a gaming laptop that you dont lug around too often... its 18 inch.

    http://laptops.toshiba.com/laptops/qosmio/X500/X505-Q830

has better graphics card too. $1400 in some sites, and built, in stock, now.
Theres a $1800 version with dual drives, 64GB SSD and 320GB HDD, 6G RAM

I'm sticking with the 1645 unless there's a ridiculous delay. I want the i7 and I want that rgb screen. I do most of my gaming on consoles these days so I can live without the card. Still, I 'd like to see people get shipping notices as mine is supposed to ship this coming Friday. :)

Yeah, I need something portable, my range is 15-16". Needs to be pretty good to game on.

And the reason why I can't keep waiting is I sold my old laptop to my brother. My desktop is not at all portable. I need a portable computer as I'm an on-call programmer/analyst and need computer access anywhere I go. And it's a lot easier when it's my own computer. Also I game and like to LAN so gaming is a pretty big one. So I need a balance, the XPS16 looks very attractive with the i7.

But the reason I'd cancel even if I didn't have to wait is just the deceit of Dell. When I ordered the laptop on October 2nd I was led to believe that my order was going to be built, and they'd have no problems of meeting the EDD.

Well now it turns out that these laptop orders were PRE-ORDERS, this should have been stated. Also, I have not yet ONCE been contacted about any sort of delay or part shortage. And since not ONE laptop of this model seems to exist yet I have little faith in Dell, but this should have never ever been labelled as anything other than a pre-order.

I also am reluctant to obtain information from Dell myself since it sounds like for most people that leads to their orders being cancelled.

The ASUS that I've been looking at is the 16" at Best Buy. I'm looking at the higher end one as the lower end's processor doesn't look too great. I don't need the 2 harddrives that it comes with, just adds weight and sucks battery power. Plus if they have them in a RAID 0 that is just a reliability nightmare on a laptop. So if I do get it I'll probably remove the one drive. I still prefer the build of the XPS and the thinness... The ASUS isn't everything I want, but neither is the Dell. The big seller for Dell is the i7, DDR3, and decent video card. The ASUS has a competant CPU, DDR2, and better video card. If I do go with the Dell I'll probably remove one of the harddrives and install Windows 7 Professional. Keep the extra harddrive around until I'd need it.

And I'm not interested in HP, sorry.

    http://www.bestbuy.com/site/Asus+-+...lack/9556072.p?id=1218124204092&skuId=9556072

    http://www.bestbuy.com/site/Asus+-+...Blue/9568112.p?id=1218125777703&skuId=9568112

EDIT: Crappy thing about the ASUS is the screen is only 1366 x 768. But the RGBLED doesn't effect me as I wasn't paying for that, I had actually opted to have the 900p screen on the XPS.

I ordered my 1645 last night and they estimate it should be delivered by 20 November. We will see. I was torn between the HP DV8t and the 1645, but I can't stand the touch pad on the HP.

Serg- Are you a Herc Crewmember? I have been to Lyneham a few times in the C-130J. Awesome place.

    .................................

My order has been canceled. And "re-made". My EDD is 12/2.

    .................................

God: forgive me for what I will do tomorrow and give mercy to the poor person who picks up the phone.

I'm getting scared. Is it the bluetooth option that is screwing everyone over? Mine is supposed to ship November 2, but I'm very skeptical now. Dell really dropped the ball on this one. I guess they don't appreciate that someone is spending a significant amount of money on their product.

Was curious about how the 1645 pricing is going, so I put my configuration in again. $2,294 before taxes and shipping. And I got mine for $1,866 before taxes and shipping. Yikes!

And I don't have *that* much loyalty, so if my order date starts to get insanely pushed around I'll quickly move on to something else.

My orders have been canceled 3 weeks ago because of the same (?) bluetooth issue.
I'm a bit worried about my order. If something happens again, I ll just cancel it and go with another laptop... I'm currently working with an old laptop and I won't wait another 3 weeks if my order get canceled.

    ikjadoon : Keep us posted.

Hey, just to update you guys...looks like the many of you are having problems that I had a few days ago with the cancellation. After cussing out about 3 reps and their manager, they redid my order (with the correct shipping method and settings) and it's now ETA for 11/19. I originally ordered this on 9/29. How accurate is this? Well yesterday it said January 2010 so who knows...

I'm fairly certain Dell reps are giving us each a different excuse at this point as to why our product hasn't shipped...

the 1-800 number on the order stage wiki thread says this current order is in production and in the 'build stage' once again...

Here's the 'excuse' my dell rep e-mailed me a few days back:

I would like inform you that I had to contact sales yesterday to cancel and rebook the order because of the part number 430-2955 ( WiFi 5300: driver has been changed ). New order number 928753163 and I have replaced the incorrect part with 430-0737 (Wifi 5300 with new driver for Studio XPS 1640/45 / 16 MLK CLF).

Now, this guy mentions it was a 'driver conflict' with Windows 7. Here's the scoop. I did not order Windows 7 -- it was not even an option at the date of my original order (9/29). I call lies.

I'm still at EDD of Nov. 9, and "In Production" on both screens of the order lookup page (order date was Oct. 16). The 1-800-433-9014 Order Status Number states "is currently being processed".

FYI, on my order, my WiFi and BT codes are:

430-2955 Intel WiFi Link 5300 802.11AGN Half Mini Card
    430-0700 Dell Wireless 370 Bluetooth Module (2.1+EDR)

I also ordered it with Vista Home.

So in resume, anyone who ordered a specific part is getting their order canceled? Just because someone blew it? What a bunch of crap :S

I will be flabbergasted if my order manages to sneak by and not got "Remade" because I inadvertently removed the $20 Bluetooth option. My EDD has been 11/9 and still remains unchanged, but I have my doubts. If it does get pushed back (past 11/15 at the latest), I'll be cancelling my order.. one way or another.
