Can someone help me in trying to run gta 4. I cant change any video settings, i tried making a commandline.txt file which says norestriction but it doesnt work, any other ideas?

EDIT, ive done it, i had to add nomemrestrict -norestrictions this to steams launch options. Kind of stupid just to let me change the game settings.

Guys I'm having a problem here. I tried updating my drivers to the 285.62 and then overclocking. After doing that and testing out batman arkham asylum the core speed kept dropping back to 590 after a few minutes. After I tried other games they look terrible even though my settings are on high and they all runn between 20 and 30 fps even when they used to run at around 60 or 50. The only games that actually work fine are batman arkham asylum and call of duty 4. I've tried rolling back the driver and uninstalling it. I still have the problem. Does anyone know how to correct this?

download the latest drivers from nvidia (beta drivers, 290.53 iirc) from here:

NVIDIA Driver Downloads - Advanced Search

click the link that says "beta drivers"

start the install and choose the "custom install" option rather than the express install option then click the tick box which says something along the lines of "clean install" which should remove the majority of the old nvidia drivers, reboot then install the new ones

after that's done set your clocks around 730core/1000mem and try again

I tried using the 290.53 beta drivers but it tells me that my graphics card and OS are incompatible. Maybe something went wrong with the download so I'll try again.

Oops, apparently you have the GF116 chip and/or are running the factory A14 BIOS - read this.

Thanks for your response mate! And happy new year :)

That's actually the very first bit of useful input I have found about this topic after HOURS of searching. It's comforting to know that this seems to be somewhat of a general issue.

I agree with you that the improved performance of the driver more than makes up for a few mhz less on gpu clock. But on the other hand, this improvement is limited to Skyrim, no other game wil get a 25% boost just because this tailor-made driver. And that's where the loss of GPU clock pains me.

I now have to run Skyrim in 690mhz mode and I still get the occasional clock reset, also I see purple triangles/artifacts from time to time! And that goes for other games too. Worst thing is when going back to the old driver the problem remains. Guess that means the problem will also persist with future drivers.

what's the point with the bios man ? i don't have problems with it for now... i'm asking what are yours scores in 3dmark06

and why after i set the core clock to 760mhz the whole system freeze? it's fine in furmark for over 10 minutes don't pass 80 celsious but when i run btf3 on 760mhz the system freeze i'm using the newest beta driver.

After doing the clean install with the 290.53 I have the same problems as before. I'm really not sure what could have caused this and I'm wondering if something is wrong with the card itself since no matter what drivers I try it doesn't work, but it works with a couple of games, that doesn't make sense to me.

edit: just to give more details about the problem. In most games the textures look fuzzy and in some games the edges of some objects are extremely shiny/reflective and my fps is just extremely low.

he wasn't responding to you, don't worry

your 3dmark score is fine... wouldn't suggest pushing it further, especially with the latest beta driver

beta driver 290.53 increases heat somewhat compared to 290.36. 760MHZ will likely work fine with 290.36 but with the new one you'll want to use somewhere in the region of 730mhz to make sure your system is stable. Keep in mind games are more intensive than furmark, especially BF3

happy new year to you also!

meh, sounds a bit odd tbh...

was getting purple artifacts on occasion when running skyrim before with a slightly too high overclock, haven't seen the issue with other games though.

does the overheating/crashing/artifact/downclock issue happen with all games then? Can you not roll the driver back?

sorry to hear you're having issues but it's not a definite that the problems will persist, they may sort them in the next driver release

you say it works with a few games... you've prob already tried this but it's possible your optimus settings don't yet include the games you're trying to play and therefor you're loading the game with the intel GPU

right click on the desktop and go to the nvidia control panel, then click on the "manage 3d settings" option, click the "program settings" tab and then you'll see a list of all the games that the driver thinks are installed on your laptop

to add one manually click the "add" button and then navigate to the folder where your game "exe" is stored, in this instance i'll use skyrim (installed from steam) as an example:

    C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\skyrim

select the game exe file (in this instance "TESV.exe") and click "open"

this will then add the game to the drop down list. Select it from the list and then, from the dropdown box below make sure it says "use high performance NVIDIA processor"

    then try re-loading the game

Tried this, still nothing. Normally I would think it's a hardware problem at this point but cod4 and arkham asylum still work fine.

edit: I'm just going to reinstall win7 and install everything from my driver cd for a fresh start to see if I still have this problem.

Hey, I fully overclocked my Asus N55SF via this : http://forum.techinferno.com/asus/1306-[mod]-asus-n55sf-voltage-increase-nvidia-gt-555m.html#post15722

Basically, it gives your Asus N55SF the highest volt it can achieve as you can't change it. You need to flash your BIOS for this via DOS Bootable USB Drive. It's really simple. the flashing process takes less than a second.

    Hello!
I used the vbiosu with changed voltage to 0.9125V, it did not work, with a stable overclocking at stock voltage overclocking 800/1600/1100 was possible to measure reliably to 825/1650/1100, but were self resterty computer, problems with BF 3. Currently I am waiting for the version with the voltage raised to 1.0V to see what will be.

How does one go about performing a safe and simple overclock with the GF116 revision of the GT 555M? I'm using the latest BETA drivers.
Also, does overclocking affect the system's warranty?

Still beta, and my max skyrim overclock was lowered by 10mhz on the core but it has an awesome improvement for skyrim (especially indoor, lighting intensive scenes) so it's worth it IMO

    Hello guys!

I recently got myself a Dell XPS L702x laptop (mid december 2011) and want to overclock it. I downloaded MSI Afterburner and Furmark, and what I want to do is to, for each clock, add 5MHz at a time while running Furmark, to slowly get to a stable clock. I managed to get up to 760MHz core clock without any problem and am on 1000MHz of memory clock right now; running Furmark at 1080p with x8AA for more than 1h 30minutes I end up with a max of 71°C. I tested this new overclock on Battlefield 3 and the results are awesome. I get a boost of at least 10FPS, which i can clearly feel, and the temperatures don't even get high.
I'm using the 290.53 Nvidia (beta) driver. Here is my setup:
    - CPU: i7 2670qm
    - GPU: GT 555m (3GB)
    - Memory: 6GB 1333DDR3

    Thanks for this awesome topic!

Out of interest, why does everyone use 3DMark06 and not vantage? Or 11 for that matter, the 555 supports DX11 doesn't it?

    I got a 3DMark11 score of 1555.

Although it supports dx11, it's not exactly a powerful card and 3dmark06 IMO replicates the more "midrange" results better than 3dmark11

For example on 3dmark06 a new driver or slight overclock may get you a couple of hundred more points whereas 3dmark11 would only show single digits or so

Yes, I was only joking. However, I've read that the 2006 version might be less accurate due to the fact of being out of date and therefore being unable to properly measure the performance of modern GPUs. Well, that kind of makes sense, but on the other hand it could have been someones supposition (that is a word, right? :) ). I guess it all comes down to comparing results with previous ones and with other users (in this thread), so as long as everyone uses 3DMark06, it does the job.

Overclocked to 770/1540/935 and it seems fine so far lol Got 14801 in 3dmark06 NVIDIA GeForce GT 555M video card benchmark result - Intel Core i7-2670QM Processor,Dell Inc. 0XN71K score: 14801 3DMarks and the temp reached 66c during the test. Idleing at around 44c.

I don't have any demanding games to test atm and the internet connection is too slow to be downloading until I get back to halls (back to my dedicated 60mb line that for some reason always runs at 68/69mb) so I cant really test too much.

770's quite high for the new drivers, remember it's not just heat but power/voltage that can cause instability... I have no issues with heat (70ish max load) yet skyrim can downclock past 750MHz core even if I can run 3dmark for hours at 770... Then again the gf116 might just be better at higher core clocks

Can push the memory higher without issue though, 1000 would be fine IMO

I also am using 770 on core and 1000 on memory. Never had problems with game titles like:

Bad Company 2, Battlefield 3, GTA IV, Test Drive Unlimited 2, Metro 2033, Mirror's Edge.

But 'CMR Dirt' and 'Dirt 2' crashes all the time if GPU is overclocked. IDK. Maybe I should try stable drivers (not beta)

    What about shaders?

Battlefield 3 recently froze on me with the sound looping. I was forced to power off the laptop since it didn't respond.

Could this be attributed to overclocking?

yes, could be because of overclocking... likely is if a ctrl+alt+del didn't do anything

don't worry about the shader, I only deal in core and memory clocks, the shader should be double the core iirc so if my core's 740 then the shader would be 1480

    No

And stability comes first, this shows the card is not operating within acceptable limits and could potentially damage the card over time

So what would be a suitable overclock using the latest BETA drivers?

I appreciate each individual chipset differs, but surely there's a safe medium of sorts?

    85ish, 70 is completely fine

Edit - and by 85 i mean that's as high as I'd want it to run over an extended period... They're "safe" to run up to 100degrees or so but you don't want that :p

Yeah, same with the CPU really, it tends to be the case that mobile components can withstand a lot more than desktop ones in terms of heat, as they know they will be getting a lot warmer. Mine doesn't tend to go over 75ish during heavy benchmarking and not over 65 in games.

Yeah that's normal... Skyrim stresses the hell out of the CPU (like source games) so they can hit a pretty high temp but tis all fine :)
