Yeah I was thinking CPU for some reason, not checked GPU!
-
Yeah, my cpu has hit 89c playing gta 4, but thats the most cpu stressing, unoptimised pc game i ever played lol the gpu didnt go past 64c in one session.
-
I have the XPS 17 3D and I just tried OCing the 555M to 650/910. After using Furmark to stress test the GPU, I noticed that the "fire-y donut" looking graphic thing is only going at 6 fps and under "GPU 1" it notes "fan speed: 0%".
Also the temps jumped up to 65 pretty fast.
Is this normal? -
Honestly don't know... Not used furmark but I know in 3dmark11 getting 6fps on some of the tests is considered good
is your overall score better or worse than other people with a similar system?

I've noticed that the GPU fan speeds up and slows down repeatedly when the system is idle. Could MSI Afterburner have something to do with this? I've monitored the temps and they are perfectly fine.
-
Yes, it could be Afterburner or any other software, which is monitoring your dGPU clocks and/or temperatures. It's keeping the card running or rather turning it on and off every time it is reading/updating these values. Every spike in temperature triggers the cooling system. It has been said many times in threads regarding XPS fan behavior.
-
So what would be the best possible solution? Forego overclocking altogether, or simply resort to running the software when required, rather than constantly?
-
The latter
You don't need it, when not overclocking and when you are, the fan is usually running at full blast anyway
-
Hey I overclocked my card to 800/1600/1080 it runs very stable in games benchmarks.... and my card doesn´t get higher than 72°C. In 3Dmark06 I got 15100 3Dmarks (with i7-2630QM) so anyone got this card higher than that? (memory speed is limited to 1080 but more would be possible)
-
Has anyone tried OC'ing a GT 555m on an MSI GE620dx?
I'm planning to buy one with these specs
i3-2310m [
is this okay?, if so will it bottleneck my VGA?]
4gb ddr3
2gb gt 555m
Should I be okay for GTA/Crysis/Skyrim/TotalWar? I will post some benches after I buy. -
Think MSI use the 144core GDDR5 version of the gt555m so that's pretty good... Would suggest a slightly better processor if you're looking to game, especially skyrim which is pretty CPU dependent
The gt555m is pretty capable of running most games on high settings at 1600*900 or lower... Am running skyrim at 1600*900 using fxaa rather than msaa and everything else on ultra apart from shadows on high and getting around 40fps

Based on the spec sheets ive taken from the retailers here, i have to make a choice. Because buying the same laptop with an i5 means that the native resolution is bumped up from 1366 to 1920, which means i have to stress my card even more? (i prefer lower res to get higher fx settings) also for the screen size of around 14-15" is the up in resolution worth a 100$ increase in cost? I like to run at native resolution (1:1) or half (1:2) resolution. Or should I save the 100$ for my replacement laptop in three years time?
-
Depending on the quality of the screen it doesn't really matter what the native res is IMO... Originally I used a 1600*900 screen because I never thought if play games at any res higher than that, the screen was terrible though and the extra desktop space that was provided with 1080p was great (this is. 17inch laptop tho)
I still play games at resolutions ranging from 1366*768 to 1600*900, there hasn't been an issue with the games not being played at their native res as the quality of the screen i have is awesome
Personally I'd pay slightly extra for the 1080p and an i5

A user on Polish forums claims that this behavior has been fixed in the latest A16 BIOS. I have yet to confirm this.
-
offtopic, are passmark benchmarks reliable? PassMark Software - PC Benchmark and Test Software i see conflicts with their rankings and other sites.
-
I'd appreciate it if you could confirm this.
-
Yes, I can confirm this now. I started MSI Afterburner and left it running for a longer while. The fan certainly wasn't doing its on and off thing any more. It did, however, kick in, when the GPU temperature reached 51-52 degrees Celsius and then stopped, after bringing it down to 44 degrees. But that's absolutely normal - at least for Dell
After two cycles the fan started working permanently, but with lower RPM, keeping the GPU temperature at 40 degrees. This is much better now. Still, I believe it doesn't make any sense to keep the discrete GPU on, when it isn't needed...
-
What version of 3d marks do you use? I'm using an MSi GT 555m GF116 128bit ddr3 on a GE620dx , so far the 760/970 clock/mem are working for 5 min stress tests, seemingly stable and no artifacts, have yet to test temps. So far ive peaked at 78C
-
Alas the problem still persists for me despite the BIOS update.
-
Sorry to hear that. Are you using any other GPU monitoring software, such as nVidia widget or GPU Observer?
-
I'm using MSI Afterburner only.
-
Hi, guys!
I just love my XPS and I´ve been tweaking the GT 555M a little in the N-Vidia Control Panel. Everywhere i could I checked the "high performance" option.
The performance went significantly up (FPS) and the temperature of the GPU during playing is around 70 C.
So, my question is this. Can/should I use the MSi Afterburner to overclock it (with the settings kroenen04 used in the first page) even if my GPU temperatures are already this high?
I really don´t understand the whole Mhz memory hardcore anime clock things, I just like games... A lot! and who wouldn't want a better performance.
So, thanks for any advise! -
70c when playing games on this card is good, many people have reported temps up to 82c depending on game obviously. But even when overclocked i havent noticed more than a 4c increase with as much as 10 extra fps!
-
Thanks for the reply!
So, should I use the same settings as kroenen04 used in the first page or set something a little differently?
And when overclocking do I change only the 3 bars in the MSi Afterburner main menu to the xxx Mhz or do I have to change something else in the computer? -
His settings work well for me but they dont for everybody, if you start getting artifacts etc then lower the settings. Those 3 bars are the only things you change. I would suggest reading the whole thread if you can as you'll pick up some good info regarding overclocking. One of the most important things is to monitor your temps! Msi has a temp reading in its info panel so keep an eye on it after a session to see what the highest recoreded temp was. Ideally you dont want more than 85c but these cards are safe past that i believe.
-
Again, thanks for your reply.
I´m already monitoring my GPU temperatures.
I´ll try those settings but what does it mean to "watch for artifacts"? What are the artifacts and how do I register them? -
artifacts are things that shouldn't be on your screen...
missing textures
strange triangles or sparkly effects on screen
driver crashes/resets to default clocks
any of the above means you're prob pushing the card too far and need to clock down
try setting the core at 740 and the memory at 1040, play something like crysis2 or skyrim for an hour or two and if you notice any of the above or your card gets close to/over around 85degrees then look at lowering clocks -
Thanks guys! I´m on it ;-)
-
And one more thing.
What is the diffence between the settings you recomended (core 740, 1040 memory) and the settings used by kroenen04 (core 760, memory 970)?
What is "safer" for the card?
Thanks ;-) -
740, 1040 would be 'safer' as the core is the more important factor when overclocking. But have a play and see what fps and temps you get. 760, 1040 might work fine for you.
Im using 760, 1520, 1050 with no artifacts and no more than a 4c increase playing several different games. -
What benchmark results are you guys getting on 3DMark11 after overclocking you GPU's?
I'm in the middle of R&D'ing my system to optimise performance.
Currently 1735 with 720Mhz 1440Mhz 930Mhz.
Rock solid temps playing BF3 (sub Ultra) 25fps at 60'c-62'c (That's when it doesnt crash, game issue not system)
I'm in the mid 70's on MW3 (Auto) 100+fps which is weird
Sorry - i7 2670QM 6GB Ram -
What's the difference between the ddr3(NOT gddr3) and the gddr5 versions of this card? I've found articles saying gddr5 is an upgraded ddr3 while gddr3 is based on ddr2 or something.
Im running at 800 core/1600 shader/1000 memory
@RixK maybe BF3 is CPU limited/poor CPU optimization and your card is not running at 100% capacity, thus the lower temps? My card runs cool at around 60-80% on skyrim and assassin's creed because of my i3 limiting the frames at around 35 fps. -
Every card has its own "soul"-one can tolerate more clocks but another not.
It´s a little bit luck how strong your chip is.
I had the same problem with my alienware desktop...running 2 GTX-580 in sli mode.I overcloked both seperate and the dell card can overclock higher as the card from evga. You understand...luck!
-
The gddr5 use as a base ddr3.But it double the preformance from ddr3.The gddr3 is modified ddr2.The gt555 in xps has ddr3 ram and 198 bit bus.The gddr5 version i think in msi has 128 bit bus and it is faster card.Nvidia always reduce something in this card to keep it in GT preformance and price range, and not to reach the preformance on the bigger brother gtx560.The gt 555 is simply 560 with some cuda shutdown. The same is with gtx 580 and 570
-
I see, that explains a lot. MSi uses 128-bit DDR3 according to GPU-Z, This is a low price model haha and it was the most laptop for the money.
Btw here's some benchies on 3dmark11
Stock
760/1520/970
800/1600/1000 seems to be fine for gaming, but artifacts on 3dmark11? -
very nice result. If i remember right with similar OC i get araund 1800.And as for your i3 processor i dont think it bottlenech you.I 3 is one of most powerfull dual core processor expect i5
.i3 blows away AMD quad APU.Battlefield 3 i think use only one CPU core for sound procesing and with my and yours card game first and aways will be gpu limited before they can touch some cpu limit.
-
Yeah haha Assassin's Creed seems to be CPU bottlenecked but that could be because its just a port :/ haha still can max it on medium resolutions though. about 30~45 fps. Apparently this card is going to be rebadged as a 635m when kepler is out.
-
Just got around to getting dx11 ultra on crysis 2. Anyone know whats the best performance/quality compromise on the gt 555m? Here's my current setup (Which I havent thoroughly tested yet.))
Resolution: 1366x768
Object: Very High
Particles: Very High
Post Processing: Extreme
Shading: Ultra
Shadows: High
Water: High
Motion Blur Amount: Medium
High Res Textures: Disabled
Nvida has mentioned what each setting does in this article btw

Just wondered if anyone plays F1 2011 on high detail and what FPS they get with the 555m overclocked?
-
Hi. So I own a brandnew XPS17 with the GF116 GPU.
I am currently playing Skyrim on 1080P with everything on max. When I play the game at 700mhz GPU clock, everything is fine, temps are around 76°C. When I set the GPU clock to 720mhz the temp remains practically the same but after a while (30min - 60min of playing) the clock jumps to 202mhz (default clock for 2d Mode) and stays there for good!! With 735mhz the same thing happens even faster (after couple of minutes).
I then even cannot reset the clock speed to default values, no matter what I set it it just sitcks to 202mhz until I reboot, then everything is back to normal. Has anybody else experienced this? I wonder whether this is due to the GPU or if it is an Skyrim OR driver issue (am using the latest BETA drivers). The fact that its forced to 202mhz and stays there makes me assume there is some lock up going on, caused by the nvdia driver. just making assumptions here...
Even on 750mhz the card doesnt get warmer than 79°C on Full load, so the card shouldn't be sweating too much.
System is Win7 64, core i7 2670QM, 8GB Ram, GF116 -
try the latest 295 official not beta drivers, that seems to have fixed downclocking for some NVIDIA DRIVERS 295.73 WHQL
-
Downclocking means the voltage is not enough for 720MHz.
-
Can you run HW Monitor?
I have a similar GF116 Chip, The default voltage is 0.88V -
It down-clocked itself to fail-safe clocks for NVIDIA cards because your overclock is too high for the given voltage.
-
hi guys
i want to overvolt mine on ASUS n55SF because downclocks, not stable overclocks... whith the last driver i can't go further then 740 on the clock
have any one have ecperiance with modified VBIOS ? i wan't to use one posted in this forum
[Mod] Asus N55SF - voltage increase for Nvidia GT 555m
-
Hi guys! Hello from Russia! )) I have MSI GE620DX-274RU (i5 2410m + GT555m, GF116/DDR3/128bit). Graphics card is overclocked: 820/1640/1098. No artifacts. Using a cooling pad with bottom cover removed)) Test results:
Vantage = P7357
3DMark 11 = P1827
3DMark 06 = 13503 ))) -
Okay, so I've posted here before about a 800/1600/1000 OC.
I've noticed that It's stable if I play a game from a fresh boot, but If I run a stress test, or change clocks in-game, I end up with a max OC of 750/1500/920. Bench marks and stress tests don't show artifacts. Crysis 1 doesn't artifact but Crysis 2 does. Is it because of an unstable OC or is it just because I stress tested w/o restarting? -
if you are experiencing problems you need to downclok , 20 -30 MHz .
-
Okay, btw anyone know a good testing device that can scan for artifacts?
-
You could try the MSI Kombustor, or Furmark for artifactsscan.
Overclocking the GT 555M card.:-)
