Right just spoke to DELL that was NOT the BIOS that fixes throtteling, they are still working on it, and as usual:
"We will inform you as soon as its availiable"....Any ETA on that ?....."Not as of yet no, but out highest level tech team is working to ressovle it".....Thanks.

Yep, and the best part is that after everything they have told us, after every missed release date for a patch and after every insistence that they have heard our concerns about 90W being insufficient, they have the nerve to call this update "urgent" when it does exactly nothing to help.

They are laughing their asses off at us.

What interests me now is what will happen to the people well beyond their 21 days to return the laptop who were told by Dell that they would be taken care of because they lodged their complaint before 21 days. Dell convinced a lot of people to wait for a patch that would "for sure" fix the problem within a few days. Now how are they going to act?

Mine is still withing the 21 days return policy but I plan to keep it, theres nothing out there with the specs and looks for your money as the DELL sure it throttles but they HAVE to fix it! If not ill send it back when im bored of waiting, in or out of the 21 days. As stated before they have commited a crime by selling me a product not fit for purpose.

True,However you cant say theres no machine with the same specs because you yourself are not getting the specs,Thats what made me stay away from the dell because now I can get a inspirion for half the price and it will perform just as good or even better then the throttling xps 16.I mean whats the point of getting an i7 if it doesnt perform the way it should.

Its like me choosing between a v6 and a v8 the v8 being $10,000 more and the dealer saying well 2 of the cylinders on the v8 dont work and I,m like so I wan't the v8

EDIT: The A06 Bios update does not resolve the Throttling problem as somebody has confirmed this by calling Dell. Dell is still working on the throttling issue with no date available at this time. Once again we are still waiting for the Throttling Update to be released.

GAME I totally agree ! but that wasnt my point, im trying to say they will perofrm the way they should some time in the furutre. and If I get bored of waiting ill send it back.

As for the specs I challenge you to find me a system with the same specs for same price or lower ?

HP Envy 15 cam in at $1600 !!! with worse screen and better GPU.

Just to make it clear I'm not putting you down because I'm in the same boat as you I still want an xps 16 knowing the issue,as for your comment above I can find you a laptop with lower specs that will be better then a Throttling xps 16 true a fix might be coming but everyday and week it seems to fade away

I have a question. If it is fairly unanimous that a fix would be to update the BIOS to allow for more power (watts) to be drawn to the system from the adapter+getting a new adapter (130w or 150w). Is it possible to just change or append the BIOS yourself? This may be a stupid question, but if there is a way, maybe we should explore that rather than waiting on a fix from Dell that may never come.

Maybe it is just the TEST version Dell was talking about. LOL...

At the end there is only one solution... Dell has to supply 130W Adapter to each customer

I think it would be more accurate to say that the system throttles when you draw 90 watts from your power supply. This generally happens when you do something that requires high performance from both the CPU and GPU at the same time. It also depends on what wattage other subsystems are drawing. Turn the brightness of the display up, maximum performance goes down.

The CPU has hardware throttling built in that is controlled by thermal sensors. The CPU will throttle when it is overheating.

This is not related to the thermal protection throttling. This is wattage limiting throttling that only kills performance when you need performance.

In general, its pretty tough to make a custom bios and you run a real risk of bricking the machine. I once did it to allow an HP laptop to take a wireless N card (those machines had a "whitelist" of allowed wireless cards so you couldn't just upgrade with whatever you wanted.) That patch required you to find the area of the bios where the whitelist was stored and alter one of the list items to allow the device ID for your card. Then you have to adjust checksums because if you just change some bytes and flash it, the computer will think the bios is corrupt and may not boot.

The code responsible for managing the conditions at which throttling occurs is non-trivial and proprietary. You would either have to figure out how to bypass it altogether (which probably isn't a good idea) or you would have to move the thresholds up considerably. So you'd have to reverse engineer Dell's secret sauce. Anything could be done, but it would require a lot of time and special tools and the threat of a bricked laptop is kind of a disincentive to try.

I've joked in the past that we should take up a collection and give UncleWebb $2000 to attempt it.

Anyone test out the temperatures at idle and under load with A06?

Is it running hotter like A05 or more like A03? Can you downgrade back to A03 from A06 or is it like A05 where you need to use a workaround (posted earlier) to get around the "feature" Dell added to disable downgrades?

Could we at least get throttlestop logs to see more of whats going on?! its specifically designed to track throttling, maybe we can see any changes between the bios's. Though i would agree if they where giving out beta bios's to relieve throttling in A05. It would seem they released it in A06?!

    release notes for info
Fluffy, im not sure the deal you got on that laptop. But may want to considered returning it until this issue is resolved. Or ya might have a bit of troubles, even if its a "crime" etc etc.

also the envy screen may be wled, but is beautiful. The 1645 i got an LG screen and some other the with the AU id, au id looked awful, but the lg is amazing (better then my desktop by far) and that is what the envy has. Ive had zero issues with it so far, its really a well built lappy. Dont think the pictures online do it justice either. Its also only a 100 or so more then the xps16 with same specs configured today.

A Core i7 Quad + an ATI 4670 requires more than 90 watts when both are working such as when gaming. That has been proven on this forum but Dell continues to ignore that fact.

Bios A06 was not able to change the laws of physics. I understand the disappointment but no one here should be surprised. The competition uses 120 watt adapters and up for a reason on similar systems.

I can't wait until atlstang posts how well his new HP performs when plugged in. It will clearly show that if a laptop is properly designed with a suitable power supply, you really can run a Core i7 at full speed in a laptop.

Any bios fix for the XPS 1645 that does not include a 130 watt adapter is at best just a shuffling of the throttling scheme and a waste of buyers time.

Throttlestop should be able to tell us without a kill a watt, for those that dont have one. Run up some tests, and compare between the 90w and 130w the severity of throttling through TS logs. This is where synthetic would be ideal like prime95+furmark, but not 100% needed if your uncomfortable doing that.

webb, its coming soon. I know others asked for it too, just finished the fresh install last night. Recovery disc took couple hours to make lol

Talked too Swedish support today asked them about the issue , they told me like we heard before. Dell team is working on a bios that soon will be availible bla bla bla bla .... why i called them in in the first place is that i cant get any sound in my xps ... seems like the lap thinks my earphones is plugged all time.
anyway they told me to send it back and they will fix it ..... anyone else that had the same problem ?

Just updated the Bios of my 1645 a few minutes ago.

    Scenarios:
    Bioshock 1.1 + A03 Bios + 90w Power Supply = 260 MHz / 5 FPS
    Bioshock 1.1 + A03 Bios + 130w Power Supply + Throttlestop = 2600 MHz / 30 FPS
    Bioshock 1.1 + A06 Bios + 90w Power Supply = 260 MHz / 6 FPS
    Bioshock 1.1 + A06 Bios + 130w Power Supply + Throttlestop = 1700 MHz / 15 FPS

Used CPU-Z to get current speed and as you can see this Bios update does NOTHING for games. Dell really needs to admit that they screwed up again and get this fixed before a Class-Action is brought against them I would wager.

    Bioshock 1.1 + A06 Bios + 90w Power Supply = 260 MHz / 6 FPS
    Bioshock 1.1 + A06 Bios + 130w Power Supply = 260 Mhz / 6 FPS
    Bioshock 1.1 + A06 Bios + 130w Power Supply + Throttlestop = 1700 MHz / 15 FPS

I get varied results. It's interesting to note that performance with Furmark and Prime95 differes greatly depending on the setttings used in the programs, for example in some cases it doesn't throttle at all with Furmark and Prime95 running if you use 640x480 Windowed resolution in Furmark. It's also not fair to use any of the Prime95 tests that use excessive amounts of RAM because you're simulating a test in two programs that both vye for the same resource. Also I don't think ThrottleStop, GPU-Z, or any other monitoring program I've used are accurately reporting things because once all testing is stopped, things like Cmod% don't return to normal, yet performance in general is fine. I'm still upset though that throttling is still occuring under normal conditions, even if the testing methologies aren't exact or ideal. I encourage people to run the program itself, or play the game, to get real-world performance results.

Perhaps another flaw in our methology is that we're testing with Windows Aero on, and multiple applications that use the graphics card heavily.

One thing to note along the lines of Areo is that it is SUPPOSED to disable itself once you go to Full screen mode with a different application. This may or may not be the case however when dealing with real world examples. All I know is the system performance with the i7 lags behind my old 1640 in regards to multimedia that is processor/graphic intensive.

(As a side note, does anybody else have issues with the system not recognizing USB devices that are plugged in before boot of the system?)

The clock mod not returning to 100% is normal. This was observed in the latitudes as well. My old system would hang at 87.5% for a long time til it decided to finally go back to 100%. Its the bios issue, They also seem to cover up the first core to say 100% all the time even tho the C0 state says different. Throttlestop just reads what the processor is saying, bios is the puppet master pulling the strings for it all unfortunately.

Heres the envy 15 with furmark+prime95 going. This is how the laptop should be. LINK.

I'm a little biased but I beg to differ. I think ThrottleStop is one of the very few programs that accurately tells you what's going on inside your CPU based on the methods recommended by Intel in their November 2008 Turbo White Paper. A lot of other software does not follow those methods. I agree with that.

If ThrottleStop shows that Clock Modulation gets stuck at 87.5% it's because it really is stuck at that level. Things are not returning to normal after you have finished testing. You can go in with whatever software you like and read the registers directly and you will see the same as what ThrottleStop is reporting. Another user did his own testing and also discovered this problem.

Don't blame the monitoring software. It's Dell's crappy bios versions that are pathetic. ThrottleStop is just telling it like it is.

I can't wait for atlstang's results on his HP. On that computer ThrottleStop clearly shows how an i7-720 is capable of running when it is not in a Dell laptop. No sticking Clock Modulation or C0% less than 100.0 when fully loaded with Prime95 AND Furmark at the same time. It really is possible when a manufacturer like HP includes a 120 watt adapter instead of the pathetic 90 watt screw job that Dell includes.

Thanks for the legwork! Am I misunderstanding the 130w + TS tests above though? It looks like the new bios is performing considerably worse with TS than A03 was.

One of the fears of those of us who have no trust in Dell was that they would "fix" this issue by disabling throttlestop rather than stopping the throttling. I worry that UncleWebb's fine work will only help Dell develop algorithms that better hide the throttling or make it impossible to circumvent.

I sometimes wonder if we aren't witnessing the birth of a new approach to laptop development. Maybe the goal is to separate product lines into very high priced, high performance gear suited to corporate and enthusiast use and then much much cheaper machines that have almost all the same hardware, but you can never get "full use" out of it.

There seems to be more evidence supporting this view than simple bumbling on Dell's part. The "supply and demand" curves we were taught in school aren't really the way companies set prices. The goal is to get each customer to pay as much as they are willing for the product rather than just sell to everyone at some "optimal" price. Retired senior citizens are able to get laundry detergent for half the price everyone else pays by using coupons and airlines can sell almost every seat on the plane for a different price depending on who buys the seat and when they buy it.

Anand recently had an article on how to unlock additional cores on some of the newest AMD "dual core" cpus. Of course AMD isn't selling their dual core cpus as Quad cores and then promising a future fix to those who complain, but the bottom line is that the buyers of those cpus can use a little elbow grease and get a really good deal at the end of the day. Maybe that's how we have to start thinking?

I've read all the arguments about how Dell advertises the XPS 1645 and how its fraud and I agree. But this is where we are...

The testing shows that the new and improved throttling scheme is more aggressive. I believe bios A05 showed the same thing.

I might be able to make ThrottleStop more aggressive too but all this is doing is wasting CPU cycles that could be better used for gaming. Might as well just stick with bios A03 + ThrottleStop.

30 fps is a hell of a lot better than 15 or 6 or 5.

I just want to, according to general consensus, is it worth it to just buy a 130W adapter now? does it help anything? Am I correct that in order to take advantage fo the 130w, I *must* use TS in conjunction with it?

    Thanks.

I'm starting to think Dell under powers everything.I was configuring a Alienware auoura with a radeon 5870 and it let me with a 525watt power supply.I was doing some research and it seems that with that video card and the i7 It should be on a stronger power supply.

Doing some preliminary testing. prime95 by itself seems to be OK on the 150w, but throw in FurMark and the chipset clocks back 50%.

Unless there's another program we use for testing video nowadays (let me know and I'll retest), I'll post my A06 results soon.

The only difference I have really seen besides the changes when running throttle stop is the processor seems to be running in turbo mode more frequently with less dips.

I am running an OCCT pass on the system now to see if the heat issue is better though it looks really like noth much changed. I will be reverting back to the A03 bios if these tests dont indicate some sort of improvement. I may have something soon since the heat problem seems to be worse with this new revision.
