No, this is not true. I am using the 130W adapter right now, the motherboard does not burn-up.

While we appreciate Bill offering to help customers fix this issue if they send him a PM, note that you are required to have a minimum number of posts to be able to private message. Making a bunch of useless posts to get that minimum number is not acceptable, so go out there and contribute.

Anyone know who to contact in the UK to get one of these?

A quick question to Bill or Todd:
I do not have a service tag yet but my laptop is going to be shipped very soon, so I wanted to know if it would be ok if I just substitute my Order Number for the Service Tag when sending the PM to Todd?? -

Based on the published minimum efficiency and minimum power factor of the PA-3E, I calculated that at 90w AC input, the DC side might see as little as 72w output (strictly 72.9, so I should have said 73w). So we can now see that the PA-3E is a few percentage points better than the minimum, with an overall 83.33% conversion capability. And the 90w limit seen by our Kill-A-Watts is the outward and visible sign of that 75w DC limiting.
And from all this, I calculate that the predicted AC power seen by a Kill-A-Watt on A06 will be ~102w.
We've been variously told that the A06 BIOS is to support a new graphics card for the 1645 (or some new variant of it), or to improve iPhone syncing.
Neither of which affect me, I thought, though on reflection if we are talking about iTunes syncing, then perhaps it does affect me, as I have an iPod Touch, which is sort of an iPhone that can do everything but actually phone...
So perhaps there is some mileage in me installing A06 after all. And if I then see a power draw of 102w, of listening to talk of Kill-A-Watt results. Always allowing, of course, that this won't quite ever perfectly predict the DC behaviour -
dell mention that we can still use 150W on the upcoming new BIOS. i will to know if this adapter works.

wow, when you get rep from "Charles P. Jefferies" you'll know it!

Midnight_Voice,
What do you mean by: "I calculated that at 90w AC input"? -
Is there a problem with the 1640?
-
The XPS 1640 doesn't have any problems as long as you don't mind that some of them throttle down to 800 MHz while gaming.
-
Dont really want to pay for something that should have come free... -
Bill , why not just inform all Countrys? so atleast the support can help us.....
Very Easy for Us/CAN byers too say they are happy... for us outside its like nothing have happend... for us throttling still is a pain in the .......... -
Trust me, the way this is going down, everyone will be informed and everyone is going to get the new adapter and BIOS update. Why? Because users with the new BIOS are going to be required to get the new adapter due to the new power requirements, and Dell is releasing the BIOS update world-wide. This thing is almost going to be like a recall when things are fully set in motion.
-
How can you tell if RGBLED is installed on DELL Studio XPS vs regular LED panel....are there any specific characteristics or info page that I can check. Thanks.
-
The bios is slated to release soon, and that is when the reps world wide will be informed to replace the adapters i believe. I can see why this is, due to the massive undertaking of rolling out an operation such as this. Very soon, hopefully, anyone that hasnt gotten adapter will be able to phone a rep and get one.
At least thats what i got out of it, if im wrong please someone tell me. -
2nd way - in device manager - go to monitors --> generic PnP monitors --> properties ---> details tab ---> hardware ids ---> shoud say sec5448
hope this helps. -
If we PM Bill on this forum, is there a need to send a PM to Todd on Dell's forums? Also, receiving a PM back as the only confirmation is somewhat shady. An email and tracking number /order number of some sort would be much better.
On the dell site it says:
"The owner name and shipping address should match those on record for the system. If they do not, I will not be able to send out a replacement adapter."
I gave Bill my school address in New York, but I had the laptop shipped to my parents house in Georgia during winter break. I hope they can make accommodations for people like me. -
It would take hours and hours for Bill, Todd, etc. to get back to everyone with order numbers. -
That's what I just did. I wanted to confirm that the orders are going out... and the address rule isn't a hard and fast one.
-
Todd said the addresses need to be the same, but it looks like Bill is more relaxed with that issue so I would just PM Bill in your situation. -
-
My DELL studio xps 16 came with power adapter cm889 which is running kind a hot do I need replacement too ?
Also I noticed power adapter connector is quite loose once inserted to the laptop. It moves/wiggles almost feels like it will break anytime is that normal.
Thanks. -
If you will... just... read... the... first... post... on... this... very... thread, you will see the information you are looking for regarding regions outside the US and Canada. -
Can you please post Charles' message on the front page of this thread? Could you also include that for those new to NBR who want to send a PM request for an AC adapter can do so by registering at the Dell forums instead of spamming here?
Charles and NBR community,
I apologize for this. -
I will add charles message up there. But i thought i had explained that the new users can go to dell forums at the top of the thread in bold if they didnt have pm options. Is there something wrong with it currently? im not sure what your asking if there is more that you want there.
but i will stick charles warning about spamming under the bold info on the top.
thanks. -
Thanks for bolding Charles' message. I wish we had a dedicated Dell email inbox for this. -

Official update: Tech support in all regions will receive messaging very, very soon about sending ac adapters upon request. The target is to have them all up to speed at or about the time BIOS rev A07 is web posted. I would advise you to watch for web posting of A07, and call tech support when that happens. You can also watch our corporate blog, Direct2Dell, for an update about the global program. We may or may not be posting there ahead of the new BIOS.
*The above will be copy/pasted into all PM replies to customers outside the US or Canada. I am sorry that you will have to wait a few extra days. I truly understand the frustration, but this is the best I could do. If I could do more, I promise I would. -
Although the other thread i feel should have priority, i did update the main page with a comment about those outside the us/can area, and linked them to your post above. Probably wont help much, but if one person gets informed its probably worth it.

things here looking promising..

Bill, There is one thing I'm still not completely clear on. So the 90Watt adapters will work with the new bios? But if we put them under load is there a safety concern, Wouldn't the 90W ones just shut down if over loaded.
-
I just wanted to let everyone know that Todd over on Dell's website is all over it. I sent him a PM this morning, and he shipped a replacement out before the end of the day. Excellent work.
-
hey BILL, i got off a call from dell technical support, INDIA..
They seem to be aware of the THROTTLING issue but they say they cannot yet dispatch the 130W Adapters because the official notice status they received is "A new BIOS version A07 will be released shortly which will eliminate the throttling issue without the need for a higher adapter".. so what do you instruct me to do??
and did you get my pm?? -

Is there any option to control the fan speed in the S-XPS / S17 with PM55 chipset manually via SpeedFan?
-
BIOS will limit the power drawn by the system. Kinda same as throttling, but this time only on 90w adapter.

In other words: It is a worldwide beta test with people, who paid a lot of money for the product.
