SXPS 16 with ATI 5000 series?

Dunno where I read it, but apparently the next graphics update to the SXPS 16 series would be to replace the ATI 4670 with an ATI 5730 chip? Anyone else have information on this? If it's true, Dell better provide adequate power through AC and GDDR5 memory, although I heard it was still GDDR3 and 128-bit

Sidenote, anyone else willing to sacrifice their ODD bay for an extra fan + cooling and an extra GPU or HDD slot? Personally, I'd love to throw out the ODD and have dual GPUs along with 2-3 fans, or maybe a mini PCIe slot for replaceable graphics.

I heard it has a flux capacitor.

It's all rumors right now. I think we'll see a Studio XPS 13 revision before another Studio XPS 16.

I saw the 5730 as a upgrade (and for free) in the Dell Canada website not long ago. I have a gut feel that it'd be a GDDR3 rather the GDDR5 for the 5730.

Dell should ditch dvd rom and the cell battery and replaced them with additional custom battery like macbook. They should also ditch the vga port too.

you can convert HDMI to VGA. Some people should upgrade their monitors before spending $2000 on a laptop IMO. :p

    Let VGA die!

The dell i5 sxps 16 at Best Buy is still using the 4670. I know best buy normally carries stripped models, but going to a 5670 would be more of a side-grade cost wise I'd imagine.

It was up there for a day or so about a week ago and it was pulled rather quickly any reps that you ask about it report it as a site error.

The plans are for the 1647 to have a Mobility Radeon HD 5730 (Madison core, which only supports GDDR3) and 1645 will have Mobility Radeon HD 5770 (Madison-XT core supporting GDDR5). This is according to the Dell website error and also reading the BIOS changelog for the 1645. The Madison-XT is the only one that supports GDDR5 and only the 1645 is getting it.

Dell might upgrade xps 16 just to compete with HP envy 15, since HP envy isnt a gaming unit, M15x cannot really compete with it... ANd HP envy just upgraded their 1gb ati cards from 4830 to ati 5830.... SO maybe dell is smart enough and will do the same.

But as said before we are likely to see a revision of xps 13 first, if you look now on dell's US home site, the xps 13 option is gone for a good few days, maybe a week. Im guessing they are selling everything they can and will introduce a new model, that most likely will carry i3, and i5 processors, hopefully an ati gpu as well!

Just for the record, the SXPS 1340 is actually still available on Dell’s website, through the „small and medium business” section.

Besides that I must agree the SXPS 1340 is due to a possible refresh, therefore I doubt there’d be a GPU upgrade for the SXPS 1645/1647 in the next 2-3 months – rememeber, they have throtteling issues to deal with, globaly.

It’s OK if one can wait 2-2,5 months to see how things develop/updates come to the 16” series, my vote the next newbie would be the core i CPUs for the SXPS 1340.

You really think its going to be 2-3 months still? The Studio 17 and XPS 1645 just got a bios update for a 'new video card'. Been checking their site like a madman everyday since Arrandale launch :) the i5 + 5000 series is IMHO the perfect laptop. If only the Envy was available in Canada for less then arm and leg like it is in US I'd already have it. Dell needs to get on this fast.

Does the new BIOS mean that the XPS16 GPU is socketed and replaceable later on, like in my 1520?

Switchable graphics support would also be very welcome with any potential 5000 series upgrade. That would place it above the envy 15 in my estimation, since so many oem's have just chosen to neglect this feature so far on their arrandale platforms

Mkelliny, do you know when your replacement laptop with the 5730 is expected to ship?

I've seen posts on here from January where people have ordered the 5730 (or maybe some other 5000 series model...I can't remember), but their order was later changed to 4670. I think it was due to a supply shortage at that time though.

omg, I'm pretty excited to know what they have in store for the SXPS 1645. I just upgraded my HDD to an SSD: to an Intel 160GB G2 SSD, all thats left is to get a video card upgrade from Dell. Im going to pay for it if possible to replace my motherboard.

RGBLED isn't limited to just i5's. You can get it with an i7 620m. :)

The i7 processors he is talking about are the quad cores. The 620M is the same chip layout as the i5's just with a higher clock speed and turbo speeds which is probably why they gave it "i7".

I know what he meant, but the point remains the same, the 620m is an i7 and it can be configured with an RGBLED. He said only i5s, the 620m isn't an i5. Oh and the 620m has more cache. Thats another reason why it's an i7.

I guess we shouldn't differentiate between the i#'s but by the codenames of the series.

The codenames don't really help either because even within those families, each part differs in TDP, clocks and cache, which is why Intel was able to use Arrandale/Clarkdale across all of its segments, Core i3/i5/i7.

It doesn't make any sense, the original i7 brandings were great and then the i3/i5 totally messed everything up as far as marketing and labeling. You have i7 and i5 lynnfields, i7 and i5 arrandale/clarkdales, but only i7 bloomfields and i7 Gulftowns. It was much easier to follow before Westmere came out :/

and back to the 5 series GPUs, has anyone else talked to, or been on chat with, Dell reps that are confirming the new GPUs?

Sounds like we've got one in Mkelliny's replacement system, and MadeiraG reporting a conversation with a tech that promised "a week max"

    Anything else yet?

I'm also getting this GPU in my new replacement but with an i5 540m. Did your agent give you an ETA on how long exactly it would take to build your machine? I'm still waiting on my order number but I can see that a system exchange has been set in the system.

hey Mkelliny, did you accept the 540 cause of the 5000 series or are you getting a 620m?

(also you'd be the first to get it on a xps 16 series, its already offered in dell's other models :p )

The offer for the board wasn't actually on the table, I sort of demanded that the next exchange have the new board thanks to all the problems my brand new factory built 1647 came with. I'm waiting for the order number to be sent to me so I can check the system specs, if it's not there I'll be calling back and lets just say Dell would rather not deal with an angry EGM92. HP learned their lesson and if Dell has to I'll go as far as it needs to be taken to get what I want, which really, isn't much.

    Any ideas? nice links?

Hi all, long time reader, first time poster.

anyway, I found this review of an Asus laptop which has some benchmarks. It's in German so the link below is the Google translation.

    http://translate.google.com/transla...s/laptop-review-asus-x64ja-jx088v-nkmo-1114/2

Looks like the difference is minimal if there is any at all....of course Dell XPS 1645 is running a Intel i7 core but I'm not sure how much difference that makes.
