From the reviews and benchmarks I have seen its a little more than minor, as the 5650 performs on par with with the 4670 and the 5650 uses ddr3 where the 5730 uses GDDR3. So, from what i've seen it's a marginally better card than the 4670

Mechanized Menace Lost in the MYST
No, I had to fight and argue and state my case as to why the 620m and not the 540m was a comparable processor to a T9900 I was a llittle peeved to read how they handed them out to people with not as powerful processors as me. In the end it doesn't matter as I got what I want. BTW which other models have the 5730? -
Damn Im still waiting for the 5000 series to appear in xps 16. I never had a dell, but i heared the screens are nice and well the price is good too.
do u know why u can have i7qm on 1645 but not 1647?
what is the difference between the 2?
And why does 1645 have Wireless N Draft but 1647?
I also hope USB 3.0 will be coming soon.
How long do u guys it takes for the 5000 series to come out? They have been implemente pretty much everywhere except with dell models -
Mechanized Menace Lost in the MYST
Well, Riccardo the 1645 was the platform that houses the clarksfield quad core processors and the 1647 houses the Arrandale or dual core processors the chipsets are the same,However, this is how DELL has always worked also the 1645 is the older of the two but not by much. USB 3.0 is found on some laptops, but as I said before it will be more heavily present in the following year to come. Someone was quoted 1 week max by a rep somewhere don't remember where exactly though.
Also both come with draft-N wireless as that is the new standard. -
I cant see wireless draft n on the german site for 1645 http://configure2.euro.dell.com/del...=N4XX1602&l=de&oc=N04X6502&rbc=N04X6502&s=bsd
and why do i only see 500gb with 5400?
Maybe its the german site... -
Mechanized Menace Lost in the MYST
You should always call to configure as they have more options than what is on the site Always 100% of the time. -
Its no longer wireless "draft" n because its officially been ratified as a spec, so its just N. And its standard on all models.

is 15.6 WLED is as good as 16 RGBLED? I am going to have to decide soon to either get 15.6 WLED with 1645 or 1647 with i5 and RGB.
Anyone who has seen both can tell me if it is better to go with i7 quad core verus i5 with better screen. -
They are both very good screens.
The RGBLED is superior. It's one of the best screens out there on a laptop right now. But the WLED is hardly bad at all.
My fiancee had an M1330 with the RGBLED and I had an M1530 with a WLED and most of the time you couldn't tell the difference. If you're a regular photo editor or hardcore movie watcher (like you gripe about things not being in HD) then RGBLED is worth it.
I'd vote i5 + RGB anyway, though, just cause your battery will thank you. -
Thanks for the info Aquitaine..
-
That's a shame, cos the improvement from 3670 to 4670 was very nice, but now there's not going to be much of a change ... bit sad really.
Oh well, DirectX 11 support is nice, as is the lower power. Hopefully the GPU heat throttling will be reduced using this newer chip.
Maybe people having GPU throttling with a 4670 could try and get the new chip? -
Well the reason why you aren't seeing much of an improvement is because the 5000 series was designed with GDDR5 in mind, which has enough bandwidth to successfully take advantage of the 5000 series design. So when you see it in notebooks attached to GDRR3, its being crippled, a lot!

Mechanized Menace Lost in the MYST
Compared to a desktop 5650 yes it is however the performance is better than the 4670 so There is nothing really to complain about I doubt that Dell is going to put a fast card that could be near an alienware level as it would compete for sales the 5730 is faster than a gt250m and gt335m but not as fast as an alienware m15x which has a gt260m on it.
-
I thought the primariy benefit to each xDDR revision, was that there was lower power consumption from the memory so if that's the case, why isn't it being implemented with GDDR5?
-
Mechanized Menace Lost in the MYST
In Idle there is low power consumption, Dell won't do it for whatever reasons, and we can gripe all day but this is what Dell's plan is sure it would be great but they are not going to change it besides I'm happy with the 4670 and the 5730 outperforms that so I for one have no complaints whether GDDR3 or 5
-
how did you get them to replace 1645 with 1647 looking at your signature? Are you happy with i5 instead of i7? Do you have any specs on 1647? Are you getting newer graphics card?
-
I have a few questions to all those who have ALREADY got their first replacement laptop (working or not) and have shipped back there original problematic laptop...
1. What is required to be sent back? everything? Im very keen on the felt cover thing that I use to wipe off smudges, and I wouldnt mind have an extra...Did you guys send that back?
2. How does the warranty situation work out? Pro-rated? So like I have 2 years and I have had it for 7 months so will I get 17 months of coverage on this one?
hope this makes sense... any help would be greatly appreciated, thanks. -
1. I sent my laptop back without the felt cover, I included pretty much everything else, still sealed OS/Works and resource discs. I kept the black XPS box but shipped the laptop in the innards of the box.
2. For me, once I got the replacement, there's no warranty on the actual unit until you ship the old one back and they process/transfer it. I had a discussion about this with my case manager. I asked if my current unit broke down within that time span what would happen, he told me that everything was kept on record, and the warranty would still be covered. As for the warranty transferring over, it just continues. so my old unit has 296 days and when the new unit gets warranty it'll continue from there. -
Nice...Oh I remember what else I was going to ask you! Do you get the keyboard covers yet? did they ship? I want to know how they are..very interested!
Also to those who have X-Fi, how good is it? and how do I reinstall it if I do a clean install on the laptop? I read it doesn't come with a disc...?
And you can do a clean install of Windows 7 off the discs they provide correct? What happens to your old windows key? -
Yeah, this makes sense. Although I'd have thought that Dell would chuck in the HD 5870 into Alienwares. But I guess that'll require some motherboard changes and thats not cost effective.
-
Keyboard covers have been shipped but they're coming from Hong Kong so it'll take about a week and a half. I'll let you know how they are when I get them
-
Mechanized Menace Lost in the MYST
They will in the m17x im sure as soon as they are available mobile 5800 series are coming soon not yet out not sure what GPU refresh will be for the m15x though -
I really hope we seen a refresh of the SXPS 16 GPU soon. I really can't afford to wait more than 3 weeks tops, and I've already been without a laptop for almost 3 months. Starting to go crazy.
-
You know what we should do. It's kind of like the "operation chokehold" that iPhone users did on AT&T but instead of using a lot of data on your phone, we all would go into dell laptop/pc sales chat and keep asking when the 5000 series are going to be available for a full day. Have a few hundred people from here keep hammering it in that this is what we want and if you can't provide it we will "go to hp" LOL
This is what I got today:
"I'm afraid we still do not have an update from factory on when his card will be available in our systems . They are still testng the systems that has power supply upgrades that can handle this graphics card. As soon as we get an update from the factory when this component will be available in our system,we will post it in the website immediately for your update." -
Mechanized Menace Lost in the MYST
LOL, it uses less power those funny Dell tech support Reps...always good for a laugh, man I love those guys!

Operation GPU Refresh:

Sorry for the probably bad english, but I am from Germany what might have caused certain damage
Are there, or were there shortly, any new rumors or informations concerning the release of the HD5730 graphics card? I am highly interested in buying the XPS 16 in the next few weeks, but as I will not be satisfied under a certain amount of gaming power, I set my minimum on the level of a HD5730, which I would be almost happy to accept looking at the other advantages that the XPS 16, compared to other notebooks, definitely has, for instance its build quality.
The aim isn't being able to play everthing at maximum but at the very least at a medium level of detail, which the HD5730 would be able to assure.
I already read the rest of this thread after this board was recommended to me by one of my contacts, sufficiently known as google
Does anyone of you know anything new? I would be very happy to be informed about it
Thank you very much! -
I would not consider the cheap plastics that the XPS is made of "good quality" nor are their quality controls for the LCD screens they use.
-
You may dislike the XPS for your own reasons, but to me personally, this laptop has a a very good build quality. So far there has been no cosmetic damage and everything is rock solid. When I compare this laptop to my previous Toshiba Satellite, this one is a godsend. I am very pleased and happy with this laptop in every sense of the way (looks, screen, quality, performance, etc) and couldn't have asked for more.
-
and instead of answering the guys question, we're talking about build quality in a thread concerning the ATI 5xxx series.
@dynastes: I haven't heard anything new for about a week now, but it doesn't look good. After several promises that it was available and that people were getting it, the news is that no one yet is actually confirmed to be receiving the 5730, and there's no clear facts on when it will be available.
Dell just updated their drivers page a couple of days ago to include the 5730, so it's definitely on its way. There is nothing specific about its release date though -
I heared mid may will be the date of new gpus.. thats what dell told me in germany, but i guess i might just get a sony f series. not the best grapics card but i guess better quilt quality than dell.
-
When the ATI 5xxx series arrives, do early adopters of 1645 get the chance to upgrade their GPU too?
-
No, you'll have to pay to get an upgrade and it'll be an insane amount of money.
-
upgrade fee is not a problem.
just want to know if 1645 mobo can handle the upgrade.
-
The 1645 mobo and gpu are basically the same thing. The only way you'll be able to upgrade is if the new motherboard with 5 series gpu will fit your chassis. Otherwise it's really not worth it. I imagine IF it will fit, you're looking at around 400 dollars for the new motherboard alone, and probably another 100 dollars plus for installing it. Which Dell probably won't even do. So I'd look more seriously at just sellling your laptop and upgrading.
-
oh ok, sorry i was under the impression that the 4670 is not soldered directly to the laptop mobo, and upgrading will be easy.
-
Hi guys, just refreshing an old thread.
Has anyone got any new information on the upgrade to the graphics card on the Studio XPS 16? My old Inspiron 9400 just tried to die - mostly successful - so I can't really wait much longer. I have a loan of a work laptop but it's already annoying me, I need a real computer.
Any news? -
Get a US Envy
seriously both Dell and HP such each for different reasons
but both are good for the same
-
Hey guys,
I'm waiting for this update before buying the SXPS 16. A couple of dell reps have told me that it's "right around the corner" and today one told me to wait another week before ordering. I can't imagine them wanting me to keep my money from them so I'm guessing that something is on it's way! Maybe not this week, maybe not the next, but soon!
And I'm hoping for them to utilize the integrated graphics from the new Intel CPU's, because if no power is needed for the power-hungry ATI5000 during most average applications then battery life might also increase?
Let's hope it comes soon! I don't want to buy the 1647 now just incase the update comes out the next week! -
i wonder if dell would send me a replacement because the throttling of the gpu is very stressful. i just want to throw it out the windows sometimes.
-
Rather than just get the GPU refresh, I want completely redesign of SXPS 16.
SXPS 13 & SXPS 16 have some design issues and the exterior (chassis) design itself already more than 1 year old.
Inspiron , Latitute, Vostro and Precision already got new models for 2010
-
It might come with a new chassis design, who knows
-
To quote my Dell rep -
"The update in the Graphic card is just round the corner, or we just might be launching a whole new Laptop !!!
That should bring in a lot more new changes."
Sound's like a new model of the SXPS16 is on it's way if that's the case! -
woohoo!! I'd love it if that's the case. With all the hassles on the current models of 1640/1645/1647 I think Dell would make sure that the next one is *very* well designed. Here's hoping there's good news "just round the corner"
-
looooool, my thoughts exactly!!!! but that throwing out of the window thingie might make the replacement a bit harder
-
going from 40-50 frames to a constant 10-15 frames is no fun.
-
agreed. i ordered a cooler and if that doesnt do the trick i think ill demand something that can properly cool itself, i.e. an m15x
-
*finger crossed*
i'm expecting the new SXPX16 will be only 15.6" screen (no more 16").
Hopefully a bit smaller and lighter than current one. -
It's true inspiron / studio got a new design already... hopefully the dream comes true !
-
No only the Inspiron have got the new design.
The studio 15 still uses the old design.
SXPS 16 with ATI 5000 series?
