Seriously, it makes sense that a lot of people are excited about the next generation of the Stupid XPS laptops. I love mine to bits, and if the next model is even better, then that sounds great to me!
It might all be speculation, but does that matter?
-
Gotta looooove that tasty speculation!

I deleted a bunch of posts in this thread. Let's keep it on topic so it doesn't have to be closed. Thanks.

Dellienware Workstations & Ultrabooks
so no more news???!!!! where is that rep?? does he even exist???
-
-
Which rep? Mine was going to call me by the end of the month to update me.
Still 10 days left.. (or sooner..)
Anyone feel free to interrogate another Dell rep thoughYou just need the right person, some say nothing at all and evade the conversation, some are too lazy to contact the marketing department and some enjoy saying secret things
My story: (This is not interesting or something, just a small anekdote)
I told mine I was about to order an SXPS16, but that I heard some rumours about a facelift etc... Asked if that was correct. He put me on hold and called the marketing department. Then told me -in all honosty- (he said) it was indeed correct (this was 3 weeks ago though) I said I appreciated his efforts very much and told him I am going to order the new SXPS16 (if it's out..) with him as rep, and nobody else. Think he was kind of happy with this. Then called him again this monday to check if there were any updates. (Look at my other previous posts if you want to know what he said) He wrote down my number and we agreed that he would call me by the end of the month.
*Edit* Just don't bother with the guys from Dell Chat. They don't know anything at all since they don't have contact with the marketing department. At least, that's what they told me. -
I'm sick of waiting ... where's ZippoMan with more of his entertaining stories of his investigations? I need something to keep me occupied while i wait
- yes I know you posted a couple above mine ... I just want more -
I'm wating for the refresh too..the throttling problems are the only thing which is stoping me to buy an XPS 16 !
-
The throttling is gone. All of it. CPU and GPU*
Latest BIOS raises the temp threshold for the GPU from what users are saying. Thus, CPU throttling AND GPU throttling should now be gone.
Congratulations to Dell for getting this fixed.
However, now that some of us have waited so long for it to be fixed, we might as well wait a little longer for the new refresh ... and hope the new one doesn't have months of updates to get it to a properly working state.
I just want 5xxx graphics. Please Dell. Soon?
* As far as I can tell from user posts. Can't say for myself, still don't own one. -
Potential XPS 16 buyers are concerned over some minor refresh delays probably caused by GPU availability. While you're feeling sorry for yourselves, don't forget us long suffering potential buyers of the XPS 13 which was taken off the market a few months ago and is still Missing in Action.
Our only options, if we need real graphics power are the Acer 3820TG which has a lackluster display and seems to be released everywhere but the USA. The other option is the HP Envy 14, which is larger, heavier and comes with a quad core rather than an I7-620M.
None of the curernt Dell 13's do it for me either. My business has used Dells for the past 10 years and I would love to have a 13 XPS. It's just not in the cards.
I am buying the first of the three I mentioned to be readily available. I have been running my office on my travel computer (an Acer 1410T) and both my eyes and fingers are longing for a bit larger keyboard and display. My preference would be XPS 13 > 3820TG > Envy 14. The availability will probably be Envy > 3820TG > XPS 13. It's funny how life works.

And there's something about refreshes usually happening soon after a Dell signature event? It's on another thread that's just started.
I want this lappy soon but I don't want to feel out of date soon after spending £1500! And I want switchable graphics *hint hint Dell* -
First thing I hear about this Signature Event.. Time to investigate that one -
Just ordered my 1647 after putting it off for so long! Estimated delivery date is 7th of June so at least if there is an update at the end of the month I can cancel and reorder... I hope.
-
I hope it's everything you want it to be and more -
And yeah this is the first real laptop I've ever bought! I'm currently on a 4 year old acer travelmate 2490 Celeron M that is just dying to be replaced!
Thanks! -
Im pretty close to taking the "plunge" and just ordering the SXPS16 with the current graphics card etc myself, though it's a toss up between this and the Vaio E-Series which has an ATI 5650 & Blu-ray (Blu-ray is a free Sony upgarde) but of course no RGBLED screen and only a 0.3MP webcam
To keep things on topic, if we are assuming that a new SXPS will have an ATI 58xx card, how much of a performance increase over the existing 4670 is that? I think im right in thinking the 58xx cards use less watts? Which in turn "should" make them cooler? -
It's unlikely happen imo. The best we can hope for would be the 5830 I think. That would be quite an upgrade but since it uses gddr3 it won't be the real gap in terms of performance. Remember TDP doesn't necessarily mean it'll heat more or less, there are some benchs out there that show the 5870 despite having a lower TDP than gtx285 radiates more heat.
-
yea the xps 16 had some sick deals going on..
-
In INDIA dell has launched XPS 16 with ATI 5650 GPU ...you can visit dell.co.in for confirmation.....hurray.....i am frm INDIA so i am goin to order mine....but its still not showing in US site....i think dell is giving more priority to INDIA this tym arnd.....or may be they are coming with more powerful GPU for US.
-
-
Its an option here in New Zealand too!!!
-
yep , dell india got the upgrade option for Rs 1200. Ati 5650 , It doesn't even support gddr5.
ans its performance is very close to 4670. Not much of a upgrade.

yup i just checked too, its confirmed. not much of an upgrade as godai_nin said. pretty disappointing if this was all the hype was leading to.
-
-
This is a terrible let-down. Nothing better than the card on the Studio 17 - which has been available for months?? There must be something else coming as well. I can't believe it.
-
There doesn't appear to be any sign of it at Dell UK yet
5650 is better than nothing mind -
So I guess it's safe to say that those of us wating for a new XPS 13 design should not hold our breath for an HD5650 in that model.
I have a credit card burning a hole in my pocket and nowhere to spend it. Acer cant seem to get its Timelines to the US and Dell refuses to produce a competitive 13" multimedia XPS. Seems that Dell is pouring all of its multimedia talent into the M11x which is inappropriate for business use (if your over 19). Something tells me I'll have an Envy 14 on my desk by the end of June (more by default then desire).
Bronsky -
I was expecting a chassis upgrade, that's a bit disappointing.
-
(It's also worth noting that Dell India still offers the Studio XPS 13, as well as 16.0" screens for the Studio XPS 16) -
time to move to india?
-
WHAT ! Just a 5650 in SXPS 16 ! This time Dell has done something really dissappointing ! I was quite sure to see a 5700 series in it. The studio 17 has also got the same card, so, what's the big deal in buying the SXPS then(as far as gfx card is concerned). The XPS is their premium lineup afterall !
-
^ agreed. They took away the 1080p screen on the Studio 17 so we'd buy the SXPS instead. Still can't believe they have 1080p displays on the SXPS16 and the Studio 15, but not on the Studio 17 - the largest display size Dell offers (17.3").
Also can't believe this is the big graphics card update for the SXPS 16. Seriously, what took them so long to fit a 5650 to the SXPS when they did it so long ago for the Studio 17? Any ideas? What is going on here?
One suggestion is that they felt they had to use something less than the 5730 from the m15x. But that sucks. The m15x should be 58xx anyway, and still has an upgrade option.
There should be an upgrade option on the SXPS too ... then I'd be happier. A 5770 or 5830, with gddr5 please -
There has been laptops in the past with 2 gpu options. What i assume is, dell will discontinue 4670 card as stock last. 5650 would become the base card and a 5700 series card would come as the upgrade option. I am sure we will never see 5800 series card on sxps because of the horrible cooling design.
-
^ Sure hope so, and hope it happens soon!
-
Give it some time guys stop panicking. I promise something better will come.
-
No there won't. The only better GPU Dell could fit in this laptop would be 5730 and they won't bother for such a small upgrade from the 5650. Maybe 5830 but why bother, it's doesn't make a big difference either.
5750 & 5770 were announced but most likely they'll never be released in any notebook so forget it. -
How does the 5650 compare to the 4670?
-
However, this card is very easy to overclock while remaining cool and stable etc... Check out the Studio 17 overclockers. It's possible to get 9000 3Dmarks06 while overclocked which isn't bad. -
im surprised they didnt atleast put a 5670 in it. seems strange that they wouldnt.
-
Actually I dont mind if they put 5650 in SXPS 16 but no new chassis is really disappointing -
Bronsky -
I dont actually mind a 5650 in the SXPS, beyond putting in the 5730 the 5650 is the most powerful card they could of chosen (the 5750 and 5770 aren't available in ANY notebook, correct me if im wrong).
I appreciate that it's supposed to be Dell's "Premium" "Gamer" series notebook but realistically, they were never going to put a 58xx card in it, because it would of taken sales away from Alienware and the 5730 is only used in a handful of notebooks as it is. A 57xx would of been really nice but I would of imagined that the price rise to the consumer, of ATi suddenly having to go into over drive to mass produce a 5750/70, would of pushed the SXPS out of the market it's aimed at.
Just my 2 cents away, I don't profess to be a high powering business owner so I may be talking complete BS -
Yes you're wrong. The 5730 is in many notebooks, 5750 and 5770 don't even exist.
Dell won't build a 58xx in a laptop like the studio XPS (besides the 5830 which is a 5650 with double SP count) not because of commercial thinking but because it'd be a pain (even impossible with the original case) to keep the temperatures reasonable and yet having a laptop that's still easy to carry with you occasionally. -
Sorry, I got my numbering confused, I meant the 5730 was only in a handful of laptops (Asus, MSI and I think the Lenovo Y560) but the 5750 and 70 don't exist
-
Dellienware Workstations & Ultrabooks
i know i would def like the old chassis better though... that leather..... that is the only reason why I would order sxps
-
-
hey people check out, the SXPS now has the ATI 5730 ! saw it on the US site !
-
You're a little late, since the GPU on the site has been noticed 9 days ago
