That perhaps might be one of the major reasons dell is not refreshing the studio xps 16. :p
Even i would try to get mines replaced. The last models i.e. 1645 and 1647 were both flawed. So, if they refresh the line most people might ask for a stable and better performing machine as replacement.

I have got main board and ODD replaced once. My laptops body is wrecked after all this. And now few days back the integrated LAN stopped working. All bad thing seems to happen to me !

Today shall be written in the history books as D-day. Dell Day. Better known as Double D's. The day every man, woman, and child was liberated by the announcement of the Next-Gen XPS Laptop.

    Back to the grind.

Decide for yourself. I wouldn't get my hopes too high but we'll see if Dell provides us with some news today.

Hey guys, I've been chasing up the rep who told me there was going to be news today.

"HI Simon, the new launch on the model of Studio XPS laptop is stalled at the moment.
But we now have the ATI 5850 card on the Alienware M15x, which is a much better platform.
If you like the looks of the Studio XPS 16, you might as well go for it, as its quite some time since we have been waiting for the new card, but in Vain."

Read into that what you will.

I might just order the 1647 now and stop waiting around, if a new one comes then so be it! But I need a new laptop! :)

I've had a couple false positives so far. Twice I thought I spotted a new laptop check box on the left hand side, but it was just a mirage. IE8 crapped out during a refresh and got my hopes up. I'm switching tactics and going with Mozilla for now. I can't trust those Micosoft commy's. The biggest scare was just a few minutes ago when my screen was filled with glorious scantily clad ladies. In my mind I tried to figure out how naked women related to the new XPS when I realized I clicked my Playboy.com bookmark instead of refresh. My bad.

Back to my post, keep your eyes peeled boys...

Troop morale is slowly dwindling. It's already mid day and we should have seen something by now. Lack of nutrition is beginning to make me delirious. I started to heat up my cheeseburger Hot Pocket with a make-shift Bunsen burner when something hit me - Unicorns. My uncle Joey once told me a story about unicorns in Ireland. You see, unicorns make rainbows, and rainbows have one thing in common with the Dell XPS - Mary Poppins. Wait, what? I'm losing it; Dell is getting into my head. In case you were wondering, this Hot Pocket tastes nothing like a cheeseburger. Man, I'm really craving some chocolate milk...

    Stay at attention soldiers.

Cheeseburger Hot Pocket and chocolate milk combo was a very bad idea. If anyone needs me I'll be in the restroom for a while. If that wasn't bad enough, I can't get the Hot Pockets jingle out of my head.

I don't understand this... It doesn't make any sense...

That the M15x would get an GPU upgrade, was to be expected. That it could have been an HD5850, too. But that it also received an optional HD5730, which isn't a gamer graphics card at ALL, doesn't make any sense to me.

So, now I noticed that EVERY laptop model (>15") has a graphics card from ATI's HD5xxx series, EXCEPT the Studio XPS16..?

    Seems bullsh*t to me :/

I'm pretty sure they learned from their mistakes with the Studio XPS line. I bet they lost so much money from the replacements and tech deployments that they want to make sure they don't want to put out a halfassed product anymore. I wouldn't be surprised that the studio line won't get refreshed till mid 2010.

74 chats later, Dell has blocked my IP address from their Live Chat. They mentioned something about harassment and that I would be hearing from their lawyers. Who would have guessed Dell had a secret service?

I'm experimenting with a new method that I like to call the trifecta. IE, Firefox, and Google Chrome all refreshing Dell.com at the same time. Just in case they get sneaky and try to implement some sort of browser specific code redesign.

I'm starting to think we received some bad intel on this XPS refresh.

    Stay brave my children.

Well, I hadn't checked in on my subscriptions for about a week, and with so many new posts in this one i was sure that something must have finally been released and everyone was talking about it. Alas, no deal!

Thanks to ZippoMan for his efforts to find out news and for entertaining us.
Thanks to tenknics for being the somewhat negative but perhaps useful "devils advocate" to keep us real.
No thanks to Dell, as another poster noted, for updating every other laptop in their lineup with an ATI 5xxx series GPUs, except the one laptop I'm waiting to buy.

Still using the work laptop and wishing for my own ...

well if that is the case, then i would have thought this is evidence that it will appear within the next month or two on the xps line hence all is not lost.

I dont know anything about this stuff, I am assuming that 5xxxx series also means switchable graphics right?
If that is the case then how come no-one is mentioning the ability to be able to switch the graphics on the other dell lineups with the 5xxx series?

Is all the excitement for 5xxxx series card related only to people who want to play games on their xps or will someone like me who will not play anygame whatsoever notice a difference?

Well it goes further then a GPU update only.. The Dell rep I talked to a couple of weeks ago told me it's more a "facelift for the SXPS16" with indeed a new GPU, USB3.0 and changes in the design. He gave me the advice to wait untill the end of june.

And no, it's not because a laptop has a HD5xxx that it has switchable graphics. It also needs an Intel Arrendale family CPU (for example i5 540m) and of course, there has to be A LOT of driver support. (Note that NVIDIA's Optimus Technology has about the same size of code compared to Windows NT. They worked with a team of 1000 people on Optimus) I think NVIDIA with their Optimus technology already have this implemented in the new MacBooks from Apple.

I'm not sure how far ATI is standing at the moment with their switchable graphics support though.. I think it's rather a software issue (bios/driver support) than an hardware issue.

Floxie, Those improvements certainly means it is worth waiting for the new SXPS lines to rollout even if it takes another 2 or 3 months especially after having to pay close to £1800!.

So on that note I think I will throw in my Towel and buy something midway for the time beign.

so back to trying to decide between a vostro 3300 and a sony 14" screen.

such a shame cos i have been waiting since sept last year to buy an xps :)

Any suggestions on the best bang for buck basic Dell laptop? The new Inspirons don't look too bad. Starting to research now ...

    Hey guys

I just called with my Dell rep and he told me that the update was indeed paused for awhile (like stated on previous pages) because Dell is waiting for a huge amount of ATI graphics cards, and ATI is having troubles to deliver that amount. The update was supposed to launch this month (again, like stated on previous pages...) However there has not been set a new launch date, because this all depends on the delivery from ATI. Anyways, he will call me by the end of the month to say if there has been a status update or not.

Sorry to keep the rumours alive though :) But I still do believe there is an update coming soon. Since all the Dell reps are saying similar things it is likely there is some truth behind what they're saying.

somehow makes sense ccause in a recent month, the 4870s for AW M17x has been keeping delaying. i thought there was something wrong with the cards too.

BUT if it really is the case of ATI itself being delayed, then it means tat the gpu in xps 16 will the replaceablE!!! if it was soldered into the mobo, dell would say that its mobos are lacking, not just ati. so i guess its a good news

Well it's not because ATI is having troubles with delivering, that it's necessarily a replaceable graphics card. Maybe they are just delivering the chips? In this case Dell would have to solder the chips on the mobo right? Or does this happen by ATI's hand?

But in my opinion it doesn't really matter if it's a replaceable card or not.. All I want is an official announcement which says that the new Studio XPS16 will be available. And fast!

Nice work Floxie, all the reps do seem to be saying things along the lines of new graphics card/sxps facelift, so there must be some truth behind it.

Not sure about the USB 3.0 rumour though, a rep told me it was unlikely that it would be included. But it's not like they've been too reliable so far. Update in 2-3 weeks is what this guy told me today. He's the one who said it would be last Thursday so who knows.

^ does this mean that the supplies that Dell have actually got their hands on have now been put into the M17x, and therefore not the new SXPS?

    I hope not.

I'd prefer to think that whatever stock they needed from ATI/AMD has arrived and the chips needed for the new SXPS are now being prepared for insertion in our new babies!

the thing is, if there is gonna be a high performing gpu in xps, def there will be 2 fans. there is no way dell can put in a quad core i7 and a dedicated gpu under one fan..

we will see what happens cause that will be a big challenge for the engineers

LOL, SXPS 16 will never, ever see a 5850 or 5870m. It doesn't have even close to the cooling capability. At best you guys can expect a 5650.

it could even be a little better than that cause the current 4670 is 35 watt, so basically as long as it is under 35 watt, it is possible.

and it makes more sense that dell puts in something that has better performance, not just similar... might even be 4830. im not sure if they are really marketized anyways. w/e
