I was in contact with XPS Tech Support here in The Netherlands, and I got told this: " we are supposed to replace the AC adapter for 130W only in the case that BIOS update didn't help"

So it's replace, not send out, and it is only *if* A07 doesn't fix your particular case.

    FYI

CALLING ALL FOLKS FROM (OR) IN INDIA:

Just got off the phone with Dell Customer Care INDIA. And my new 130W adapter is coming in 2-3 working days.....

All you have to say to them is that you are experiencing "THROTTLING BIG TIME" and also that you have updated to the latest BIOS - A07 and put in some extra spices and your new adapter will be well on its way in no time.....

Go on... Make the call.. DELL XPS CUSTOMER CARE: 080-25108066..

My special thanks to NBR , Bill, Todd & Bradd, who helped people convey their misery with their new laptop.

A very special thanks to UNCLEWEBB who helped us recognize the level of throttling done to this "beast". Without throttlestop & NBR most of 'em would have not known about what throttling itself is. Thanx a lot man. Appreciate the help. Gonna donate right away!!!

    Back to SNOOZE mode!!! :p

Even I called today and they are sending me the adapter. They are not sure if it is the slim one or the brick one. They even told to send back the 90W AC Adapter.

We spoke with our global tech support leadership and can confirm that all regions have been messaged that they are to send 130W adapters to 1645 customers upon request. Please contact tech support in your region to have your 130W AC adapter dispatched.

At this time, please stop sending PM requests for AC adapters, tech support in all regions will be handling dispatches from this point forward. If you have already sent a request to us, we will still check them and if a dispatch has not been made, we will process it and respond via PM.

    Regards,
    Brad

Don't know if it's related, but two days after I put in A07, I got a blue-tinted screen. I put the brightness to the highest level, but the screen went black. But if I put it down, it would go normal.

So, blue-tint, increase to max, one more push after max, black screen, back down and back to normal.

But then once the screen went black for good and would not turn on again, even after two restarts. Required me to take the battery out for ten minutes and then put it back in. Thankfully, it came back.

Don't know if it's related, but just another ANNOYANCE of using this laptop. I'll call Dell and get this fixed when I find the time...which'll be about never. Ugh.

That's funny. Canada pulls from the same stock I do. I hope they don't know something I don't. If you want to PM me your service tag and ship to address, I will have a look.

I was running COD: World at War. Maxed Settings at 1280x720 (1920x1080 was playable for the most part, didn't log that one though). This was with a 130w + A07. My specs are in my sig.

It seems like its staying around 13x multiplier. So does that mean it was using more than 2 cores? I didn't think COD:WAW was that demanding  . I'd appreciate a good analysis of my results from anyone (U-webb/alt), thanks...

My average FPS was 45.3 (low=25 & high=86). My temperatures also stayed decent in that time period, maxing at 78 C (no Arctic Silver 5 applied yet). I was also using a USB-powered fan that was positioned from the left side (with the 2 usb ports) facing the bottom fans. So that helped.

Well it doesnt show any throttling just by quickly looking at it, although a bit odd it doesnt hover around 13x more with such a C0 state. From the looks of it, it looks like call of duty uses all 4 cores, but only partially. Which i dont know, it could i dont have call of duty to compare :-/. Dragon age uses 4 cores, but it usually pretty solid around 13x as well, or was with throttlestop + A03 and is with my envy.

It would be interesting to see it running in windowed mode, with a screenshot of throttlestop to the side to see whats happening on all 8 threads. Also can always try throttlestop enabled and running a log and see how they compare. Though some 1080p gaming log might stress it a bit more and tell us a little more as well.

As far as adapters go , are you still sending out adapters? I just ordered 2 days ago and I did send you my order details thru PM. Are you able to check if im getting the 130W if you are not able to ship it?

    Thanks.

@Bill: I am a new member here. I don't have PM privileges yet. I just wanted to see if you could assist with getting that 130W brick as my order is "In Production".

I will wait until I do get those privileges. Thank you Bill for giving us your time! Thank you everyone for being supportive!

So do we have any confirmation that the new BIOS update for the 1647 eliminated all the throttling (as Bill stated the engineers test said so)?

I think BIll said engineers were saying that during testing..the A04 completely eliminated the throttling and the 130w adapters were not necessary for this model. however, that is just what Bill said..who knows

Well after a weekend of messing with the new Bios and a 130w adapter I have to agree that most of the throttling issues have been solved. Only problem now is the heat generated by the laptop due to the exhaust being blocked by the screen. When playing Bioshock 2 at 720p resolution my GPU registered 83 Celsius (181 Fahrenheit) and Core 3 of my i7 at 84 Celsius. Now while I saw no slow downs due to heat I did see lots of fragmentation in the graphics and worry that the limited heat sync is going to prove to be an issue.

This machine is probably the hottest laptop I have ever owned which is not a good selling point to me. Hopefully this issue can be resolved but from what I see there is very little that can be done to compensate for the poor heat exhaust that this system uses.

By the Way, has anybody else noticed that temperature management software such as HWMonitor, RealTemp and others have issues reading?

I looks like the laptop is running hotter now after the A07 since they upped the multiplier/voltage. Can somebody confirm temps pre/post A07 ???

I attempted to use a Heat Pad but the temperature did not vary due to the blockage of the heat exhaust port. We will just see if the plastic starts melting on this one I guess.

Upgrading from A03 to A07, I saw no increase in temperature of my CPU cores or GPU. My temperatures with AS5 both before and after were the same (range). The only change I noticed was a few days after A07 was flashed when I replaced the AS5 with GC-Extreme; now I idle in the low to mid 40s and reach the low to mid 60s under load.

I applied some AS5 over the weekend and pretty happy now. Room is around 70F and at idle cpu is 44c and gpu 46c (did see it hit 45c once). Under load is upper 70s. Before AS5, cpu and gpu would hover around 50C. I wonder what it will be like in the summer though.

I didn't see a difference in temperature between a03 and a07, except with throttlestop I would hit 88c on gpu and 78C cpu while playing crysis. Ran cooler with A07 and better with AS5.

There should be a Direct2Dell post about the throttling in the works. Bill, can we get an ETA on that? Also, what are you hearing from the engineers about the validation status of A04?

Officially, I'm done and tech support will handle. However, I have 25 PM's in my inbox. If yours is there, I promise promise promise to get to them all tonight from home.

Got your PM and email. See above. ;)

That's what I was told re: throttling on 1647. The adapter question is still being debated internally. I know there is a message that went out globally to tech support yesterday that, in part, said to dispatch 130W adapters to 1647 customers who complain of heat. I'm trying to make the dispatch automatic like it is for 1645, and one step further, there is a movement afoot internally to send them proactively to 1645 owners. I'm trying to piggy back 1647 and 1747 customers in the same program. Wish me luck.

I owe you a Direct2Dell post. I will talk to Lionel and Brad about it as soon as I can. Sorry, but on this one, I will take the hit for being very busy and have not been able to press for the post or even a deadline. Will post back once I have some concrete info to share.

Only update for 1640 is that I have the first pass at sizing done, but still need to tweak my web crawler. I am showing 114 comments in the last 30 days. A word about sizing: our search criteria does not account for posts or comments that do not specifically contain the defined search terms, so replies to an existing thread on topic but do not contain the search terms are not counted. Under those conditions, 114 over 30 days is a lot. It meets sev criteria, and will be escalated to the appropriate teams for resolution internally starting tomorrow when my weekly report goes out. Sorry I could not get it in the pipline sooner, but this is as quickly as humanly possible.

thank you sir, I truly enjoyed your detailed posts. It's a lot better and more comforting than a simple yes or no or coming soon. You're either a great liar and should be a lawyer (kidding I know you're not :p ) or that stuff is really happening. I hope its the latter! :p

By Heat you mean we have to mention that the adapter is getting hot or the laptop temps are getting hot??
Just trying to get the correct scenario. :D

I'd have to imagine adapter temps. I can't see how replacing a 90W with a 130W could do anything but increase laptop temps; therefore, the decrease in temps must be on the adapter.

The only thing I could see that would be remotely possible and likely a stretch is if the updated BIOS ran the fan longer and at higher speeds with a different adapter attached and as a result dropped internal temps. But I somewhat doubt it. I agree wholeheartedly about the adapter.

I posted this over in the 1647 owner's thread, but I think it would be pertinent to post it here as well.

Dell agreed to send me a 130W adapter for my 1647. They want the 90W adapter returned but I don't have any problem doing that. I think the larger power supply and Throttlestop is a good temporary fix until Dell gets the BIOS taken care of.

Out of curiosity, when you started this, how many hits did your crawler get for the 1645's? :D

I have been on the phone with Dell's xps support dept. for over an hour and they are telling me a big NO on issuing me a 130 watt adapter.... Any ideas on what I can do to get one not on my tab...Bill, Brad, or Todd??

PS I am one those who got the 1645.....

FINALLY got through on Dell's chat with the XPS support dept. Took a little bit of effort, but nowhere close to the effort I put up and got shot down with over the phone....

WORD OF ADVICE: USE DELL's CHAT... unless you like having transfer games played on you....

I'm wondering if the problem is something else because I have had similar weird issues with my RGBLED on A03, maybe 3 events total. I remember one time needing to leave the battery out for several minutes too and worrying that it wouldn't come back on. Maybe it's worth having a separate thread started for this issue to see if other are seeing this too.

OK, guys. I wanted to get back to this thread right after the 1645 BIOS post, but a little something called DPC Latency on Alienware M17x kinda blew up on me Friday night.
1647 owners, A04 is coming shortly. It's in test now, and if it doesn't fall out of test, we may soon be watching this thread to see how you rate the success. One part of the BIOS equation that we have not settled on is whether 1647 needs a 130W adapter. Before you jump in and let me know it indeed needs 130W, I know. I have heard you already, and I'm making the case for you. It will depend on whether A04 takes full advantage of the 130W whether the new adapter is part and parcel to the fix. At least we have official messaging to support to send 130W adapters if a customer complains of excessive heat from the adapter. No need to PM (and please don't) if you want a 130W. You can just call in, report the heat you are experiencing on the adapter- even as of now- and get it. It remains to be seen if A04 will use all that power or not. Arrandale+WLED on the 1647 draws less power than Clarksfield+RGBLED/WLED on 1645, so from an engineering standpoint, they are not settled on whether we need to include the adapter automatically at this point.

That's good news. However I prefer the 90w adapter over the 130w. If they decide the 90w adapter is fine then how would that go about? You did say that the 90w will get a lot hotter on the A04 bios right? So whats going to happen when people on the 90w update to A04 and their adapters get really hot? Could I ever get the 90w adapter again in the future because I prefer it over the bigger 130w?

Thanks Bill for your time :)

Another good update (not being sarcastic!). But that said, unless Dell limited the 1647 to 75W and you'll now increase it to 85W like the 1645 in the early days, I personally cannot see how modifying any settings will remove throttling for them - updating P and C-states for example will make the throttling impact less felt but won't remove it.

This is why you still hear a small minority here saying please increase this on the 1645. You've mentioned people don't know the math and you cannot release the real numbers -> so let's assume it's 110W or 115W (I think people think it's 105W) .. increasing it by 10W to 125W should be a non-issue as it was 85W on a 90W adapter?

If the Dell engineers who would know much more than anyone here say it's a no-go because X, Y or Z may blow-up then just say that (TS I believe shows this won't happen as I believe it pulls all the power it wants from 130W adapter).

edit: changed wording of last sentence in brackets as I cannot prove anything.

I'm working on it. I should have more a little later this week. Hopefully before I take a 4 day weekend starting Thursday. If I am out when something happens, I will be sure Brad or Todd are looped in and providing timely updates.

I think I did say "a lot hotter." I should back off that statement, as it was conjecture on my part. Apologies. Let's wait and see what the engineers come up with in testing. If they think it's too hot, they will let us know. You are not required to take us up on the 130W offer if you choose not to.

I'm going to do a bit more testing and keep my 90W adapter for now. It didn't feel very hot today but I only used my laptop for a couple of hours. Felt like my old PA-12 got hotter than this...lol. But good to know the window for the 130W will remain open through support.

    Hi, guys.

Somebody said BIOS? We have a firm ETA. Do not hold me to this, because it is still in test and will be until a short time before it gets web posted. Engineers have determined there is not a need for 130W adapters in the new BIOS to overcome throttling, but that's a moot point, because as I stated earlier there is messaging to the front line techs that they are supposed to dispatch 130W adapters when a customer complains of heat with their 90W.

Current ETA is 2/26, barring testing fail. They usually post on Asia time, so look for it late Friday night. Install it, run your tests, and post back how it goes. I will be on vacation from Thursday, returning Monday. I will ask Brad and Todd to monitor comments here to see how it goes. Thanks for your patience.

    Dear Bill & Todd,

I contacted 2 support guys from Dell Greece and they are not aware of the 130W PSU replacement program. Please inform me on how I can deal with this issue. I'm about to transfer my warranty service from Asia to EMEA. Thanks in advance.

Hey guys, does somebody know the part number for the SLIM 130W adapter in Europe? I was on Tech Support with Dell Benelux (Belgium/Holland) and they could send the standard brick one but did not find the slim one in their database..
