Good luck dealing with them. I am at my final straw with dell... After numerous issues with my last complete care exchange and now numerous issues with a Studio 1640 I purchased last October I think I'm done.
    My current specs are:
    1640 T9550/4gb mem/ 500gb 7200/ rgbled
System Pratically melted and is being replaced under safety/hazard

Because the RGBLED is no longer offered I was offered one of the following:
upgrade to i720, upgrade to 640gb, upgrade to 6gb mem after trying to send me two replacement 1640's with WLED (and telling me I didnt have rgbled because it was previously listed as fullhd).

Frankly think those upgrades are a joke compared to the RGBLED unless they are doing all three. Asked for the i820 and was rejected.

given the choice to upgrade one of these, which one is best?

    1) i5 520 to i7 720
    2) 4gb to 6gb memory
    3) 4670 to 5730 graphics card

    No Dice.

    RGB or nothing.

    Equal specs or better.

Either an Alienware M17X or Dell Precision M6500.

    Good Luck.

If I had to choose one, I'd easily go with # 3. Quad Cores are great, but the i5 dual cores most definitely hold their own. 4gb RAM is sufficient. Go with the 5730, slight performance increase, should run cooler, and is dx11 capable (whether that's really important to you or not).

What do I do about the screen? They are replacing my RGBLED with a regular WLED screen. Any advice?

Complain, as they're are legally obliged (as per warranty contract) to supply the same or better specs as a replacement

I hear others who own the RGB will say settle for RGB and nothing less... precision or AW..

BUT, if you don't care about the "perfect" colors, the 1080p will be great; I'd probably just beef up the computer everywhere else...

I'm getting the replacement today and I'm gonna test for throttling on battery. (Originally why I sent it in) They said they'd give me an RGB by means of screen replacement. Hopefully the RGB doesn't contribute to throttling as well. If it does maybe I can haggle for an i7 820? Or a better gpu? Let you know 'til then!

So apparently they Dell decided not to contact me and discuss upgrade/different model replacement and just send me a replacement they saw fit. I did receive a call from Michael Dell's office today and said that I should be getting it today and they would touch back with me in two days and check on how the notebook was... I told him okay sure sounds good.

It arrived today and the first thing I noticed was that my leather binding was missing again (was missing the first time the in-home tech came replace). So sure okay let's see what they put under the hood, maybe some upgrades for all the trouble. I pop open device manager and see I went from: p8600 to a p7350 and from RGB Screen to 1600x900...

So.... what do I do now.... at this point I don't even feel like installing visual studio and my c# programs to test for throttling, what happened with minimum of matching system specs?

If you press them they will offer a refund... May be a benefit for some, but frankly with the coupon that was out when I got mine I couldn't get the same computer for the same price (10 months later no less).

I'm stuck in the same boat. My replacement system is on order, no RGBLED and they denied me when I asked to get the rgb put in after or swapped from my current machine. As compensation i was upgraded to i7-720 from T9550 but everything is the same, in my opinion not a fair trade.

Sure they will offer the refund, but if some are like me and WANT the system working or got a wicked deal and don't want to give it up, just simply tell them you want a working laptop and not a refund. PERIOD.

    Worked for me...

ok i just got off the phone.

Agreed to XPS 16 replacement with 250gb SSD, 6gb, and 5730 video upgrades.

I lost my RBGLED. i asked bout the other AW but it was rejected quickly. normally i fight but i need this laptop fixed quicker. I will give the xps 16 one more chance but anymore issues i will be forced to play my cards.

so hopefully i will get my system quick.

Dell just told me that they don't supply RGBLED's anymore so they will upgrade my i720 to an i820. Is that a fair trade? Think I can I milk them anymore for 2 months of trouble and 2 months of my warranty?

The truth of the matter is what none of us say matters in your argument to them; Best bet is to stick to your guns of what YOU think is fair and deal with them about it directly and point out why you feel they are justified.

IMHO, unless you are a "picky" person about the colors of yours screen, the 1080p screen will be fine and upgrades elsewhere would be worth it in place of just having RGB. But, that's just my feeling about it........

If they upped your proc. alone, maybe ask for an SSD????

He said they only upgrade by one step, meaning i720 goes to 820, 6 gbs would go to 8 gbs, 500 gb hdd would go to 640 gb hdd and he said 4650 is all they come with. I cant get a 5730 apparently.. Is he just bsing me

The first half about one-step up upgrades is BS.. but the other about the GPU could be true if you are not in the US........

I'm asking for an SSD and the 5730 which comes standard in the more expensive 1645's. Seeing as it generates less heat and overheating was a issue I called technical support for. I brought it to their attention that I was lied to and I am just hoping for the best now. Is michael_dell the right person to email?

Well, I recieved my replacement today, and has the spewcs as listed, except it also has the 5730 instead of the 5650 ;)

The 1645 keyboard feels better than the 1640 (maybe because it's new :p)...also light leakage between the keys is lower.

Amazing service Dell! :D

    Hi all, long time lurker.

I have a 1640 w/ RGB. (I should preface that this was sent as a replacement to my 1530 that had serious issues.) Between Heat Issues, Throttling, touchpad and the fact that a tech cannot get my screen cover flush and now there is a ton of dust inside they are replacing my system. Numerous components have already been replaced with no change.(MOBO, HS, Video Card, etc)
I have been assured by 2 xps reps and a supervisor that my new studio will have an RBG screen. This was last night.
I went back into chat support today and I expressed my concern that there are not any RGB screens available. Do you think I should have a problem getting the same screen given that this was a replacement for an xps1530 from 2 years ago or will they/do they typically make it similiar or better specs than the current system?
So in the end, should I expect to see or be able to work with them to get an RGB screened system and how long have you guys had to wait before you saw the specs of the replacement system. I want to ensure it is up to par before they send it out!

    Thanks!

JUST when my replacement BS was supposed to be done and over with, they shipped out a system in less than 12 hours with my current specs, and NOT the specs I had on my last order they were about to ship and have had promised OVER THE PHONE :0

Shot an email back expressing my grief.... will update later today.

They are only obligated to have the specs be better then your purchased machine. If your purchased machine did not have RGB then you will have a harder argument if/when your replacement comes without. Techs always tell you that you will get what you want, but it rarely happens with dell without at least a little bit of a fight.

    cbaty,

    dude!

I've heard of bad luck, but....

I'm not sure where the disconnect is.

Maybe you and your rep can put things in writing.

Something like, do not ship; unless I approve the specs that you have provided, in writing. That way both you and Dell are on the same page.

BTW, did they ever find the "missing" laptop?

Good luck, you obviously need it.

Thanks for feeling my pain man... This must come to an end someday, right?!

Yeah, if I do not have a call after by the time I am done with lunch I am going to call in.. And yes, I will demand to be addressed about the specs before shipping!!!

And the missing laptop is a mystery to me.... I doubt that Dell has any idea where it is, but I can prove I dropped it off, so the lady yesterday released my account and shipped me 1645 with lower specs than what is offered on the BASE model online right now.... efin ay!!!!

Will update you guys soon, wish me luck, AGAIN!

I've still got 'work in progress'

Any idea how long it takes until it's 'In Production'?

Dude, to be honest for how long I have been through this stuff I still haven't figured out how they do these... Mine is already in production now and I have had them shipped the very next day...

I think it depends where the order stems from... like if it comes from the Michel_Dell team it ships FAST.... if you order online you'll have to wait weeks...

So, it all depends and no one will know for sure. You can always call in to get an update on the EDD... the website usually doesn't reflect the correct EDD....

What do you mean the executive team? I used micheal_dell@dell and go to the cust. resolution center which has been the best help ever as far as dell goes....

I would try calling this dept @ 1-800-624-9897 ext. 7283898 and ask them for some more help as to what is happening with your money....

    Keep us updated...
