I need help guys. I told the Dell representative that others have gotten solid state disk, processor upgrades and other upgrades because their RGBLED screens were replaced with WLED screens, which implied that he was lying to me about my options. He asked me to give him order numbers of the people who can attest to this and then he would discuss those options with me.

When I was telling him about how people got upgrades I was referring to people in this thread, so can anyone tell me what they got in compensation for their RGBLED screens and put their order number down? If you can that would be great. Dell is trying to screw me over really hard :|

Even people who have received a completely different model could help me. I told him I just want to know my options. All he offered me was a i720 to i820 upgrade or a 500gb to 640gb hdd upgrade.

Hello everyone. I have been a long time reader and I guess a newbie poster on these forums. I know this community is solid and helps one another quite well so I figured I would post to ask for some help.

I have a Studio XPS 1640 right now. I bought this thing back in January of 2009 and really liked it. A few months ago it started giving me crazy problems. Over heating for no reason and the fans going super loud whenever I would launch a single browser page. I can hardly view any kind of HD stream without it stuttering and skipping. I even have video issues when I run programs like AutoCAD and Photoshop. Sometimes it will just blank out the screen, go to a solid color that was being used in the program and then stall for 10 seconds or so. I also suspect throttling too but I am unclear as to what that exactly is. But yeah, just a host of issues that many others have mentioned previously.

Well, once I noticed it, I didn't really have the option to call Dell as I needed my computer every day for school work. It was nearing the end of the semester so I said I will handle it later. Now that summer vacation has started, I decided to call Dells Tech Support line.

On Monday, they told me they will be sending in a technician to replace the motherboard and the heatsink. The technician came in today and did exactly that. Booted it up and it was alright and he left. I tested it by running basic programs, using the HDMI connection, multitasking here and there; and well nothing really was fixed. I still have heat issues as well as the random fan spin ups. So I called them back a few hours after testing the system and they said they will send another technician in. They said they will be replacing the motherboard again as well as the bottom plastic casing of the computer. They gave me the dispatch number and I should expect him to arrive tomorrow.

My question is does any of that make sense? Could the problem be fixed by replacing the bottom plastic and the motherboard again? I don't have much experience with Dell or laptops (this is my first ever, always preferred desktops over this). I just wanted to get any opinions on this situation to see if everything is in proper order and I am not being toyed with since this thing cost me quite a bit when I first bought it.

Any ideas, advice, or suggestions are welcome. Thanks for taking the time to read all this! I appreciate the help!

I would let the tech come out and "fix" the problem again. I assure you that you will experience the same issues. Call dell again and this time tell them what I did. That, replacing anymore parts will not work and that this is unacceptable. Tell them it is an obvious design flaw and you want a working system just as you paid for. I did this yesterday and today I received confirmation that they are working on my new system. Now I just hope to get a comparable one to my current one.

Thank you so much for the quick reply. I will wait it out until the tech comes back tomorrow. We will see what happens. But I agree. I sincerely doubt that a new mobo and a new plastic bottom is gonna fix it.

I will call the number/extension that is posted on this forum quite a bit. Hopefully I will have a resolution to this soon.

Good luck with your new replacement system config! Keep us updated. I will do the same.

    UPDATE:

So a new tech came in today with the back plastic and a new mobo and a new heatsink. He told me, quite frankly and honestly, that there was no point in replacing the mobo or the back plastic because it was already done the other day and the plastic isn't going to do anything. So he booted it up and it was okay for the 5 minutes he remained on site. I tested some HD footage with the HDMI connection, general browsing and some light AutoCAD work. However, the problems remain. I am quite annoyed.

So I called Dell up once again and explained the situation. He was like the technician should have replaced all the things that were initially supposed to be replaced. So he is going to send out another technician to my place. I got angry on the phone and he said the new technician should be able to solve the issue so long as he replaces all the things that are supposed to be replaced.

I am extremely peeved about this. Anyone have any advice or suggestions as to what I should do? I know many people have gone through a lot worse and patience is necessary with these systems, but I just don't want to be stuck in an infinite loop. Thanks again for listening!

I've had technicians come to my home multiple time, already knowing that the replacement parts would not fix a darn thing. However, I let them do their business, after all it is their job.

Even if the problem was fixed, I would experience new symptoms for other problems. A third technician was going to be sent out to replace my RGBLED when I said I had enough. I simply said this situation is ridiculous, it's been over 2 months and Dell has not supplied me with a fully functional computer. That is when the online chat representative suggested a replacement system.

That is how I got out of the technician loop, however, I am in the replacement system loop. They keep sending me downgraded systems so I complained a lot and I'm waiting until Saturday for a new representative to call me.

I would email [email protected] and explain your situation and what you went through/going through. Somebody should get back to you within one business day. Its helped me in the past when Dell chat was acting very difficult and unknowledgeable.

    Good Luck

    WXGA+ 1440x900 to RGB 1920x1200 to WLED 1920*1080

I tried for the AW17x and if anyone thinks I still have hope I will continue, but as stated by others Dell is only obligated to make my replacement the same or better than my original system!

There are 2 areas where it not as good as my previous system....Screen, which, if I stay with the SXPS this is the best they have. Also, the HDD which I will have no problem getting adjusted to at least a 320 7200 but would really rather have an SSD setup.

I started this process last night and my replacement will be here tomorrow.
    Thoughts?

Well just got off the phone again with the Dell corporate rep, he fed me some bull *t and said that even though they sent me a god awful 1640 with the p7350 and 1600x900 screen that getting upgraded to 1645/1647 was not an option. They said that they didn't have any RGB screens so that is why they sent me the crappy one and as a replacement he is going to have a tech come and replace the cpu with a p9400... I told him that was ridiculous and that I know upgrade is an option... so he will call me back on Monday, anyone else have this much trouble?

Oh wow, would have been awesome if the 1645 didn't throttle/overheat/havesomanyproblems.

I'll be sure to reference your order if the representative tells me upgrade is impossible!

Major upgrade... and was hoping the replacement coming w/the 5730 would kill the throttling but i guess it doesn't fully.... oh well, at least 1080P is coming my way!

    Anyways, Good luck man.

I haven't read through completely but am I to understand that the 1645 they sent me will more than likely have alot of the same problems that I had with my 1640(throttling and overheating?)

Gotcha, leather and 5730 the only changes on your new replacement system? Whats the reason for this exchange? same old stuff?

I went from a 1530 to 1640 and just got this 1645 today.

They upgraded me without me even asking.. the 15 was sent in three times, twice for the same issue that wasn't addressed for why it went in before....

I have leather on mine now... dunno why I left it out.. and they upgraded me to 1080 and 5730 without me asking either.........

The reason they are sending me it is because "it is sure to resolve all of your(my) problems(throttling)" we'll see but that is highly unlikely... good thing I am warrantied until 2012.. : )

same here. 735 days left for me to keep exchanging this bad boy. I got upgraded to Bluray 46790 and i720 without asking. I can see the difference in the screen but I will be fine!

Just spoke to the Dell rep and used Cbaty's customer number as proof of other people getting upgraded computers.

It was a response to this:

"I apologize for the inconvenience caused to you.
As explained earlier, we do not have an option for the RGBLED screen. However please let me know if you want me to request for a certified refurbished laptop to be shipped out to you as a replacement with any one of the below upgrades :
    1) I7 820 QM processor

    2) 640 GB hard drive

    3) 8 GB memory"

Keep you updated on if I get a more fair deal. Thanks again cbaty!

    Yes! Vikram_Rajp
He has been of NO help and I brought it up with his supervisor
He's told me nothing but fibs so far

He told me he was my single and only point of reference over and over again, but guess what?
After 2 days of being stern with him, someone else contacted me from Dell and asked to speak to me about my issues.

Hopefully this person isn't so rude.

    Spoke to a new representative.

He is going to send me the same exact laptop as my original, (with RGBLED) because it was only a batch of RGBLEDs that were malfunctioning and creating problems. I am skeptical, but I made him document that if this fails a request for an i820 upgrade, SSD upgrade and 5730 upgrade would be put in to make up for the WLED.

    Woot, hope this works out.

Replacements are sent under limited warranty, if you're original computer had a problem and technicians could not fix it by means of individual component replacement

Has anyone else been dealing with Vinay Kesavan from corporate? I feel like he is just pulling me along week after week, he is the one who sent me the absolute trash base model 1640 and now said he is not allowed to discuss other customers when I told him I had cbaty's customer number and now he said he will try to get me the replacement I want but likely it will again be the same as I have now (which is what he said last time and sent me garbage)

Funny how when you get the right ammo(my cust. #) they are more willing to work with you?!

But no, I have not had the pleasure! Sounds painful man, I wish you the best.

Does he also say that he is your single and only point of reference?

Ah.. well now I'm just waiting for this damn replacement with the same specs as my original. They said it'll take 3-4 weeks, and when I return that because of a very high probability of throttling, they'll send me another replacement.

When will the loop end :(

I've read through an enormous amount of this thread and I'm still having a hard time getting a read on the level of problems that might lead to getting a replacement.

    I've had these issues w. mine. (XPS 16 1640)

Throttling (not tested with software I have just observed some un-warranted slow downs and issues that a computer with this much horse power should not have, for example lagging when viewing Hulu videos in full screen )

    Speaker distortion
Overheating (temps up to 95 C) when NOT doing anything enormously taxing.
Intermittent blue screening when unplugging peripherals
Dust under the screen (really aggravating because I use this computer for art/graphic design and photography)
Intermittent internet problems (though I think this is on vista not the machine)

Now that all said I am generally able to use my computer without issue though I have had some rough weeks.

In your experience how many engineer appointments with fiddling and replacing would I likely be going through before I got any sort of replacement offer.

Other elements that might play into this argument.

*I really want to keep my RGBLED display
*I would be willing to move down to the studio 17 series with the RGBLED (don't know if that would help or hurt my argument though one that would have everything I want would cost less than what I paid for this)
*I purchased the 3 year extended warranty so I can point out that I have given dell a-lot of money over the last year.

At this point this is just speculation but I'm interested to hear what you guys think.

I didnt argue too much about the system they sent because i have no working laptop right now and the wife is not happy with me stealing hers. The new one comes today and I already told him I will probably not be happy with the screen. At that point i'll give them the option to send me an ssd drive or make a new machine.

Hello everyone once again! So Dell didn't call me or anything they just sent me a new system. I found this new one on my doorstep in the afternoon. But here are the specs:

I believe I hit all the differences. Clearly, it is a nicely upgraded system from my current system. While I haven't tested any throttling, overheating, or stuttering, I just wanted opinions on this new system.

A few things however do concern me. The replacement laptop did NOT come with the leather backing on the lid. Don't know how much it's worth fighting for at this point, but that's just one difference I noticed and was curious about.

Second, the screen on the replacement laptop has a 1080p display resolution and is just a bit smaller than the one I have currently. I don't have an issue with this, but I noticed that the replacement doesn't have the same WLED. Or at least it certainly doesn't look like it. When I put them side by side, the whites on the screen look completely different. The one I currently have is much whiter while the replacement is a hue of yellow almost. It's like a subtle off-white. Also, the newer screen seems to have a bit more deeper colors. I don't know if that's my eyes playing tricks on me though.

But yeah, I don't know how to tell what kind of panel it has and if it is WLED or not. If anyone knows what I am talking about, please fill me in! Any advice, suggestions, or recommendations are welcome! Let me know if this replacement on paper at least is acceptable along with the screen confusion!

I am gonna fiddle around with the laptop some more and see if I have other kinds of potential issues.

    EDIT

So I just found this. My current panel is SEC5441 . The replacement panel is AUO11ED. I don't know if that helps, but if anyone knows, please let me know!

no idea what model number your original is but the RGB is sec5448, but I would be happy since it's an upgrade and you can always just lower your resolution and viola back to where you were before...

onto the good news, I was finally approved for a 1645 replacement! no idea on specs yet however, but they stated no RGB, has anyone successfully asked dell if they could transfer their old screen onto the new one?

Dell has took away my RGBLED and gave me
    1) i7 720 to i7 820 upgrade
    2) 6gb to 8gb memory upgrade
    3) ATI 4670 to ATI 5730 upgrade

The computer in production has no blu-ray player and no leather trim so a representative said they will do an in-home service replacement for those 2 components.

Does something in production usually arrive with the same specifications as they list?

    I surely hope so..

Can't find a thread about it, but Dell is replacing my original network card,

    Module, Card, Network, 5300, Inspiron

    With this one

    MOD,CRD,NTWK,6200,CNB

I'm unsure of the specifications of both, anyone know which is better?

I just got a replacement XPS 16 for my original that had various problems with flickering, etc.

My new one has a WLED screen, which I actually think is sharper than my original RGBLED. However, Dell is obligated to match or exceed the original laptop's specifications, if I remember correctly.

Is it possible to make an issue out of this and demand compensation? The invoice price is about $700 cheaper than the original.

Also, I checked the WEI, and the new machine is showing a 4.7 for the processor compared with a 7.0 for the processor in the original. However, they are the same exact processor! What gives?

Edit: Drat, I noticed that someone mentioned the 5730 being an upgrade in compensation, which is what I got. Never mind.

You can easily demand compensation. The 5730 is not really a big step up from the 4670. The RGBLED option was around $250 when it was available I think. You can probably get a 128 GB SSD or 2 more GB of ram if you ask for it.
