** The Official Studio XPS 1640/45/47 replacement thread **

Well, Dell called today and said they have "made an exception" and OKAY'D a 1647 replacement... will update when details are known. Curious to see about the 5730 being available or not on it....

 

So my studio 1749 showed up yesterday and so far I'm loving it (I'll put a comparison review up in a day or two in case anyone else is considering a studio 1749 as a replacement).

Any way I was expecting the laptop to come with a return label or an extra box and instructions to ship back my 1640. But none of that showed up, no box, no instructions for a return, just the laptop...

Will Dell be sending me a return box in a day or two? Or did they just forget to ask for the 1640 back. I'm waiting for Dell to make the move here. But what should I expect?

 

Check the outside of the box in the clear plastic pouch. You are supposed to use the box you got the new one in and a return shipping label should be in that pouch.

 

I had a dell xps m1530 that had dr pepper spilled on it last week. They are replacing it with a new system.

usually when you log into your account recent orders should display on the top right. then you can click on a link under orders to get system info.

 

Well I finally got okay'd for the tech to come and transfer my RGB screen from my old 1640 to my new 1645 replacement but the tech snapped the wire since it was too short to begin and so they replaced the screen with another incorrrect 1600x900 lcd.

That brings the grand total to 4 in home techs and 0 successful visits

 

Hmm actually There is no 1647 with a 5730 out yet,They put a request for me initially for the same but declined it later as there is no option for a 5730.I am too getting another 1647 as replacement ,waiting for the specs still,It will almost be the same as the origonal tho ...

 

If I wasn't getting a 5730 replacement I would request 8GB of RAM or a SSD.

 

Well I initially had a 1645 W 4670 and was replaced a 1647 W 4670.Now again,another 1647 is comming....

 

So the first 1647 replacement you got still throttled? I love how Dell just thinks replacing units is going to fix this problem. The only machine that seems like it WONT throttle would be the 1647 with i5-450/520m...If they wanted to give me one of those with 8GB RAM and a 256 SSD I would definetly go for it!

Should I be satisfied with this replacement? Is there anything that I am loosing? Can someone tell me if the new system has bluetooth and abacklit keyboard?

overall a good setup, it may still throttle though with the i720 4670 combo

 

Where in my specs are you seeing the "1 GB ATI Mobility Radeon HD 4670" i dont seem to know which line is telling me this and the rep on the phone didnt know either

 

taking a while for them to ship it to me. Replacement ordered 7/6 now it is 7/15 and my unit is still in production. I asked them to upgrade the cpu for me but they sais they will have to get it approved its been like 5 days for that too. I guess i DO have to wait 3-4 weeks like they quoted me.

 

So, i was approved for a replacement last thursday, i emailed my dell rep 2-3 times but haven't had a response since thursday. i have been trying to find out what my specs are on my replacement. so i finally decided to check for myself and see if they had them up there. and apparently they decided to put up the specs for it. here there are(at least the changes worth noting):

9800<i7 720QM
4gb ram<6gb
rgb led1080p<wled lcd 1080p
3670 1gb<5670 1gb(and i had originally ordered a 4670 on my laptop but got a 3670, yipee!)
320gb<500gb

and thats about it.

so, here are my concerns, and any help on whether these statements are true or false and answers to any of the questions would be appreciated. thanks

i've been reading that the 6gb does not perform as well as the 4gb or the 8gb b/c of dual channel or something.

the i7 720qm throttles is what i've heard, i don't know if that stil throttles with the 130w and the 5670 or what.

i really like the rgb and have heard legends about some people getting the wled replaced with their rgb?!

haven't heard that much about the 5670 thats bad, any throttling happen?

and the hard drive.....well....i really want an ssd but i figure that they've made up for the loss of rgb with the processor, ram and video card. and i don't want to be too greedy here.

 

That spec there is the "1 GB ATI Mobility Radeon HD 4670". The codename for the card is M96-XT, so that M96 in the spec tells you that you're getting the 4670 (Under codename of this LINK you see "M96"). I'm so surprised that the rep didn't know that...

 

The rep only stated i would be getting the same video card that my old system had. And i knew that wasnt true as i dont think they even make a 1645 with one i had on the m1530.

One more question, How can i tell if they are sending a black laptop as that was the color of my old one. And if it the leather one or not? Just out of curiosity

 

Unfortunately it doesn't say in the specs you listed above what color you'll be getting. They might have stopped including that info. recently because my replacement that I got in March told me that I would be getting black (MODULE,LIQUID CRYSTAL DISPLAY, 16,FULL HIGH DEFINITION,RGB, BLACK,1645/47). I never knew if I'd be getting the leather though, so that one you can never tell either way. I did however get the leather as well. Most people do get the black though (unless you're Cin' ), so I will guess that's what you'll be getting, especially since your last one was black (still don't know about leather). Cross your fingers...

 

Sorry for so many questions. But If my order was placed the 13th, when should i expect to receive the computer based on yallls experience? The reps have said anywhere from 3 weeks to the guy last night that said 5 weeks.

And do all 1645's have the premium SRS sound in them?

 

Yeah it did and that is the reason they are giving me another replacemnt ,They tell me that this one wouldn't throttle ....

Also im not sure if im getting the leather or not it says high gloss im going to freak over the screen tho. They say they would not ship it without my permission but of course they did. If they wont replace the screen i want a freaking ssd. They replaced my 2000$ system with a system that is now worth 1400$. The RGBled screen is what made my 1640 the best. And if there is not leather then they are cheap ******** They killed a cow for me once why not again?

How do you find out if it is new or refurbished?

I was told they just transfer it to the new computer, as mine expire May 5, 2011, so my new system will be under warranty until then, but Im going to extend it before then for another 2 years. I dont see your video card either, someone had to help me find mine in my spec list as well

 

Hi, have you talked to dell guys about the warranty extension..my warranty expires by 2/12/2011...and i talked to one of the dell rep and he said it gonna cost around $379 with a $75 gift card...dont you think its too expensive for a 1 yr warranty extension???

 

I have not talked to them about the extension, I was planning on extending it 2 more years.

 

weird when i saw my system config i didn't like the video card, it was a 4670. i requested an upgrade to the 5730, 2 days later they canceled my first order and put in another build with the newer video card, they also said if the system was already shipped you can always call tech support and they will replace whatever part you want upgraded. so don't worry just call them up once you get the new laptop and ask for the replacement screen.. i don't think they'll say no.. it could happen but just try another rep they should push it through.

I don't know if i wanted another tech ripping open my new system . My other system showed so much wear from being torn apart so many times and nothing ever fit the way it should have again. I might just ask for an ssd to make up for the cost

Just unboxed my 1645 and im insanely pissed . The 1600 x 900 screen is utter crap. They left out freaking bluetooth and there i no leather on the back of the screen. Im going to lose it when i call them. I want the 1080p screen, bluetooth, the leather and for my troubles a ssd. And i want to be guaranteed the screen will be new not refurbed. freaking dell

Edit : I have the two systems side by side now and i want to cry. I am really going to miss the RGBled screen. It is so bright and coolers pop. Im going to take some pics when i can

 

Your video card in the original canceled replacement was the same card in your new replacement.

I ordered June 25th, and it finally shipped yesterday.
Just a note, on the website my order status says In Production, however they called yesterday, telling me it was shipped.

Just got off the phone with dell and im satisfied. They are sending out a RGBled screen + bluetooth adapter. I tried hard for the ssd no luck

Calling for a combined 12+ hours didn't get me squat.

My system didn't come this way however, many parts were replaced individually until the laptop was pretty much fully loaded. Waiting for the damn i7 840qm.

When they ship the replacement, how fast of shipping do they use? I hope its overnight!

What does this mean?

How'd you get the RGBLED screen? I talked to the Dell Sales agent, who owns a Dell Studio XPS 16 and he said he wasn't able to get his RGBLED screen replaced, and said that I couldn't buy the XPS with an RGBLED screen.

 

How are people receiving the ATI 5730? I don't see it in the US.

Switch the screen/lid... how would they tell the difference?

If I was too get a replacement.. best believe I'm swapping out my screens... RGB for Life!!!!!!!!!!!
