So does Dell still supply the 5670? Or will they just send me a 5730 because it comes standard now, with the xps 1645? (If the GPU has a problem)

1647 has the ATI 5730 option in Australia, but strangely cant upgrade the wireless card to the 5300, stuck with Dell 1520.

Thinking about getting this option in Australia. I want long battery life and portability as opposed to raw processing power. Thus the i5 may be the better option. Even asked Dell if they could give me the Intel 5300 but sadly, no. May need to stick with the Dell 1520.

Hi all. I hope this is the right thread to post this query! My apologies if it is not.

I was wondering if someone could answer a question for me. I am potentially upgrading to a Dell XPS 16 laptop. It has a i7 820qm processor and therefore I assume it will be the 1645 model.

My question is have dell fixed the throttling issues I have read about for new models that are shipped?

    Many thanks.

I got my Studio XPS1640 back in July of 2009 - spec below:
    Obsian black with leather
    Intel® Core™2 Duo T9550(2.66GHz/1066MHz FSB/6M L2Cache)
Genuine Windows Vista® Home Premium x64 Edition
    4GB 1067MHz DDR3 SDRAM
    ATI Mobility RADEON HD 4670-1GB
Full HD RGB-LED LCD display (1080p)
    256GB SSD
    blu-ray burner

what are you people saying to dell in order to have your system upgraded to the new 1645 or 1647 models? my machine over heats a lot and windows often gets stuck in that stupid (thinking mode) where the machine does nothing and just freezes. my battery pack becomes super hot. I have 2 year of warranty left and would love to be upgrade with the new Intel chip. I want to avoid heat sink / motherboard replacement( no home visit BS - too busy with real work and cant leave the office)

Please advise - thanks in advance!

You can't just have your system replaced because it runs hot. Us who got our systems replaced have had multiple issues and tech visits replacing parts but never succeed.

I thought the over heating issue was from the design flaw and that alone should be cause for replacement?

let say i am also experiencing throttling aswell? is this enough to have my heat sink n motherboard replaced? keep in mine I got my machine back in June - July 2009 few months after the 1640 released.

Throttling yes. But you will need to have your motherboard 2 - 3 times within a short period of time to be qualified

contact the rep who arranged your replacement and ask them to see to it. Ultimately, if its not shipped back they are going to hit you with the charge. Its in your best interest to contact the rep.

Looks like your getting the color red :D

You got 4gb of mem, intel wifi 5300 card, I7-720QM, 9-cell battery, 500gb HDD, Bluetooth, and the 15.6 Full HD Wled screen at 1920X1080

    That's all I can decipher..

Vacations!! WOOT! I would really love to go to Japan, could you send me there? I know you're the only one that can do that for me Batboy. Lol. No bad feelings, just simple debate. Japan would still be sweet though (This is a joke btw, before you ban me or something.... :D  ).

@ephraimjdd. You could try calling Dell and explaining your 6/9 cell issues, though they rarely concede on that. The 9-cell mainly helps with air circulation around the laptop (it elevates it), as heat is not the most well handled in this system. Nice specs though.

All right well my replacement system is in production.

Still have the leather (1 320-8352 Obsidian Black High Gloss Finish with Leather XPS 1645 $40.00 - so if yours doesn't say this I imagine you're not getting it), got the 5730, and of course losing my RGB screen, but since I'm getting lots of flicker I'm not so sure that's a problem. They also added bluetooth which I didn't have before (I previously ordered a card separately from eBay).

Now here's a question (well, 2)...I had upgraded my previous system from Vista to 7 Pro using an upgrade license - my new machine comes with 7 Home - can I upgrade the 7 Home to 7 Pro (is this even worthwhile? Major difference is the ability to run apps in an "XP Mode", right?)? Should I just swap the HD?

Thanks a lot for the lookup.

Yea, I am really surprised I can't find any part related to the GPU

I try to build a 1645/1647 machine from the Dell home, and there is no more option for video(auto set to 1gb 5730). I wonder if thats what it is.

Anyways, I will know next Monday....Thanks!!

Impressive Dell shipping, got a phone call on 7/22 about laptop being shipped and same day I got another call from Fedex saying I have no one at home to pick up :p

Got the laptop next day 7/23 and it does have the 5730 ;)

My original laptop was 2 years old with T9300, 4gb, 320gb 7200, 4yr warranty; pretty much top of the line laptop then. I have had overheat issue with it for almost 4 months and Dell had try to replace heatsink (x3), MB (x2) and after 3 times, they finally budge for the replacement.

One thing which is odd is that the laptop is labeled refurbished and shipped in a somewhat crappy packaging. Everything from it seems like its brand new (spec wise). Anyhow, super happy with this replacement.

Time to update my sig :)

well. thats the way it is when you replace laptops.......its nearly always refurbished products. (you only get a brand new laptop IF you replace it during the first 2 weeks)

    Hi guys,

I'm in the process of getting a replacement for my throttling 1640, and trying to work out what specs to push for. I'm thinking CPU I'd be better with the Corei7 540M/620M as it they have 15 TDP lower than the 740QM/840QM. h

However, the upgraded wifi card is not available in the with the 540/620:

    Intel® WiFi Link 5300 (802.11a/g/n) Half Mini-card (what I have now)
Dell 1520 Wireless-N card (only available with 740QM/840QM)

Will I notice the difference? I use Wireless 100% of the time - usually playing WoW. i.e. Using Ethernet cable is not an option.

Also out of curiosity, this GPU is available with the 540M/620M CPU build:
1GB ATI Mobility Radeon HD 565v

Anyone know what this is? It is the included GPU in Australia Core i5 build.

    The upgrade available is:
    1GB DDR3 ATI Mobility Radeon™ HD 5730 [add $74.80 or $1/week-1]

    Thanks very much :)

About my above post: I'm pretty sure the GFX card is 5730 (Madison) but I'm not sure on the screen.

Your spec. list says "High Def. +", so I'm thinking it is 1600x900. Usually it says "FHD" or "Full High Definition" for 1980x1080. You do have the 5730 and I believe the machine will be a refurb. Usually refurbs read "Module" before each spec. The refurbs are pretty new though so, hopefully, no need to worry.

Haha, I just got the specs for my replacement which I quickly denied.

    They proposed to:
    Downgrade my HDD
    Downgrade my Screen
    Downgrade PSU
    Downgrade Wireless card
    T9550 -> i5-540 (I would accept this)
    Remove my TV Tuner
    Downgrade my warranty

To be honest, I'm insulted at the pile of crap machine they specced for me. Last Dell I'll ever own.

Dell proposed to replace my laptop, (again)

They promised me another new system with the below specs:

    i-820qm
    8gb ram
    256gb SSD
    ati 5670 or ati 5730
    blu-ray drive
    wireless agn 6200
    black w/leather
    16 inch rgbled screen
    bluetooth module

Seeing as the 1645 no longer comes with the i7-820, I think I'll finally get my i-840. Tell you guys if it throttles or has those wireless issues I experienced when plugging in peripherals. Be back soon!

Hey overvu, I have another question.
How did you get them to exchange your refurbished with a new one? Seems impossible for me.

Know exactly what is wrong with your laptop. I had 2 in home services done and they just caused more problems. My first replacement was a refurbished one but when that didn't match the specs of my original they sent me a new system. I wasn't expecting it. They said since they could not find a refurbished system that matched mine, they had to create one.

Yeah, I know what is wrong with my laptop and did the same as above, but Dell tells me they can not guarantee me anything except equal or better system. I think it is crazy how you jumped from your previous system to your current.
Did they send you a tech to give you that processor? or did they ship you a prebuilt unit?

They shipped me it because they weren't going to give me a RGBLED. They also added the 2 more GB of ram and the ATI 5670 and the bluetooth. But because I spoke to another representative when I asked for a screen swap (which I admit, was kind of dirty on my part) Dell agreed to do so.

At first for the RGBLED, they offered me one of the following:
    2 gb ram
    640gb hdd
    ati 5670
    i7-820

But after arguing that none of these is equivalent to the RGBLED and the closest one was the i7-820, the corporate I was talking to FINALLY let me talk to his quality supervisor and he dealt with me very nicely. Even though the corporate told me that he would be my single and only point of reference MANY times, I persist and got to talk to his supervisor.

He's the one who hooked me up with a new system. I never asked for anything, I just denied what they offered me.

I think you have to remember, these are people too. They'll play by the book but when you throw a curveball and the book doesn't work, they have to improvise..

I still have throttling issues though.. my wireless issue is the worst! Kinda takes away the portability aspect of a laptop...

Very nice. I was told my replacement is going to be in red even though I did not want red. I just accepted whatever they gave me since they told me I could not choose. May be I should demand what I want.

So they keep calling me and asking me if everything's OK even though I haven't received the new system yet...I've mentioned to every person I've spoken to that I'm unhappy the RGB-LED isn't available anymore but they all just jump to offering me a refund if I'm unhappy with the configuration of the new machine.

Here's a question, maybe especially for you overvu - my original system is an i7-820 and the new system is specced the same (processor wise) - it was entered into the system on 7/22. What are the chances I'll actually end up with an i7-840?

Phobos512, are they sending you a brand new system? or refurbished system exchange?

edit: I have a question for some of you. Did anyone get their replacement "pre-built" with the RGB screen and 5730 together? I am being told this combination is impossible unless I swap the RGB screen?

Yea if it's refurbished you're most likely getting the i7-820. If it's brand new you could get either.. I'm not sure of the i7-820 cut off date. But if you get the i7-820 I'm sure if you push your way around you can get the i7-840 no problem. Just be persistent.
