    Ty, ty!

I noticed that I was getting a WLED instead of RGBLED and contacted them about it and they said they no longer make that screen. So then the awesome rep said, because of the inconvenience, I can bump your RAM up to 4gigs instead of three. I'm like that's fine. So the above laptop got canceled, and I got this new order

    1 224-6716 Studio XPS 16 Notebook $0.00

I have a buggy studio XPS 1645 laptop.

Dell have offered me replacement. I asked for i7 620 processor but they say its not available.

So what should i go for now 540 or 740. I dont want heating issues again.

    would 540 be a big downgrade from 720 ??

You're asking if going from a quad core to a dual core is a downgrade? i thought the answer was a little obvious :p

I'm rather annoyed that they didn't mention they would not be able to send me a computer with the same screen since I specifically mentioned that I wanted the same screen size when I was in the chat while they were ordering my computer. They assured me it would be the same as the old computer or upgraded. While I had no idea about the RGBLED no longer being available, they must have known.

They upgraded the RAM from 6 to 8, but that doesn't make up for the loss of the cool screen--at least not for me.

Does anyone know what my options are if I refuse this new computer?

Also, they told me this computer would be refurbished, but I noticed that some people in this thread have received new ones sometimes. How would I know?

The new computer doesn't mention LOJACK or the remote access thing. Will I be able to install those on the new computer? They came installed on the older one, though to be honest, I was never able to get either to work. I was hoping they would come with the new computer and I could start again. (The Lojack thing pops up asking me to install it every time I start my computer. I click "install" and it never installs.) Ditto for the PC Tuneup thing. I like that and want it on my computer, but I don't see it on this new one.

I know it's a small thing, but it also really annoys me that they installed those games and and eBay thing and whatever else because I specifically unchecked all that crap when I ordered my other computer. I didn't want a bunch of software on it that I didn't want or would never use.

I am so disappointed about the screen. That was one of the main reasons I got this computer.

aizjanika, that's because they no longer make the screen. How can they give you what they don't have? Esp, they are building you a brand new system when they could search for a refurb machine with the RGB. The latest batch of the RGB is from 01/2009 so go figure.
So what you can do to keep your RGB is to contact them, express your unhappiness and have a tech come over to replace your current RGB on to your new machine. That's the only solution I can think of. You get to keep your RGB and eat free +2gb mem upgrade.

    WindowsXP
    899€ with shipping.

    3dMark06: Overclocked@777/950 8008Points :D

    Undervolted + Overclocked : 41C° Idle, 65C° Stress
    Status: No Issues

Problems: I dont like nature of the palmrest, it catches fingerprints too easily.
    - Thats about it though, I love my notebook.

Upgrade: I would upgrade to a similiar notebook, the style and the look of the XPS 1640 are in my opinion close to perfect.
Maybe an even faster videocard would be nice, something that reaches 10000points in 3D mark06 perhaps.

But then again, I am still running XP, and I know Windows7 is supposed to be great, but I am too lazy to upgrade - You know what they say, never change a running system :D

So this is a new machine? I wasn't sure, though it doesn't say "module" as mentioned in previous posts.

I know *now* that they don't have the RGB screens anymore, but my point was that *they* knew at the time they suggested replacing this machine. When I mentioned it was important for me to have the same screen size/same screen, they said something like, "I'm sure the new computer will solve all your problems" instead of telling me the truth--that they weren't going to be able to do send me the same screen. I feel like they lied to me by omission and didn't give me a choice to accept an extra 2 GB RAM as a replacement for the screen. They just did it without asking me. I don't feel that it's a fair replacement either.

I saw that one other person was going to do this, but I wasn't sure if it worked or not. I'm going to contact them later and see if there's anything they can do.

Yeah, the whole fingerprint magnet thing is probably one of the worst parts of the laptop. I finally broke down and bought the Zagg shield for it. It's pretty much like a thin layer of super-high-tech plastic that you put on the laptop to protect it. Application is similar to putting tint film onto a window.

It didn't eliminate finger prints, but reduced the appearance of them significantly. Plus it protects the laptop from scratches.

Do all people having 1645 face heating problems around the wrist pad because i have one and i face those issues.

IS 1645 unusable on LAP, which is what a LAPtop should do (atleast for me).

1647 also has the same issue ??

Palmrest does get slightly warm when running at full load. Not crazy warm just enough to keep your hand warm :D Great for the Canadian Winters. And yea i use my 1645 on my lap all the time. I even game while on my lap. My heat tolerance may be a bit higher but my temps always stay below 80c.

I'm getting ready to return my old computer. Does anyone have any advice on how to make sure I remove all my personal information before sending it back? I'm deleting programs, but I'm not savvy about making sure personal info goes with the program. I think I could follow basic instructions, though, if such instructions exist anywhere. I've done a general search and found some info on this topic, but a lot of what I've found seems as if it might be outdated, so if anyone can point me in the direction of newer info, it would be much appreciated.

I'm a bit nervous about returning my old computer, though, because I'm already having problems with the new one. Besides the things I mentioned before, the disc drive (I think) vibrates. When I was loading in some disc-based programs, the computer vibrated so much it was shaking the whole table I had it sitting on. It did this with every program I loaded in except the last one (when I was trying to show my husband, of course).

Another odd issue is the keyboard. This is the exact same keyboard as the other computer, but it's somewhat less responsive and doesn't feel as smooth or comfortable to type on. Maybe this is something I could adjust, but if so, I have no idea how.

aizjanika, you can format the drive completely by using the windows disk that came with your system(just format it, stop there, then pack it) or just delete all your personal info and programs and send it. Dell will format the drive and destroy any data in there automatically. Your call.

I think mine also vibrates, but I guess I am not as picky. It could be a loose screw that's causing the vibration. You can either ask them to replace the whole drive or check for a loose screw yourself. Hope this helps.

I noticed that the model HL-DT-ST DVD+-RW GA31N has much less vibration/noise than the TSSTCorp model. I thought my old 1647 with TSSTCorp had a loose screw too, but took it apart to verify and there was nothing loose inside. At full speed (i.e. during windows 7 ultimate install from original 64 bit DVD) it vibrated my desk also.

Hey guys. Hoping to get some quick help here.

    Previous machine: M1530
    T7500, 2.2, 4MB, CMER, G0
    Nvidia 8600M GT
    200GB, FREE FALL SENSOR..., 9.5, 7.2K, SGT-GAL
    4GB, 667, 256X64, 8K, 200
15.4WSXGA+, VIDEO ELEC. STDS. ASSOC...., TLF, SAMSUNG...

I will be getting a call tomorrow from Dell regarding my replacement SXPS16. I haven't been "in the loop" regarding CPU, GPU etc for roughly 3 years.

What do you think my replacement specs will be? I just don't want to be offered any downgrades (if thats possible since my system is ~3 years old.)

Anything to stay away from? Is the 9-cell recommended for this system? I prefer the "flushness" of the 6-cell but not if it hinders performance, cooling etc.

I already requested for the 130W adapter.

    My guess would be

    core i5
4670 or 5730 - both are a significant upgrade. The difference between these two are slim.
    320GB or 500GB
    4GB DDR3
    1600x900p

WSXGA+ is 1680 x 1050 so my guess is the screen would be the 1920 x 1080p fhd

Are all the 1920x1080 screens the RGBLED ones? I've heard great things about it.

Sorry for the noob questions. Thanks again for the help.

BTW, are these specs equivalent to the "1647"?

jmkiang, while the RGBLED are 1920x1080, they are no longer offered in America (and other countries seem to be phasing them out).
There is a WLED 1920x1080 available, just not as pretty as the RGB.

    I see. Well, thats a shame. I guess I can't/shouldn't complain though.

Any comments on the 6 cell vs the 9 cell? I got a 9 cell for my M1530 so technically, I should be getting a 9 cell for the SXPS16 too.

Google some images/youtube video of the 9 cell, it does not sit flush to the laptop like the 6 cell does. There is a ~1cm strip running along the bottom which raises the laptop up at the back. This does a few things
    * Less heat because of extra space (good)
    * Raises the rear to what I think is better height for typing and using (good)
    * Makes less comfortable on lap because the strip digs into thighs (bad)

I had the 6 cell on my first xps and now have the 9 cell in my replacement, and prefer the 9 cell. I use Logitech Lapdesk so the digging in isn't an issue anymore, and the extra battery life of the 9 is nice, and the reduced heat is even nicer, particularly for an inherently hot laptop.

Yeah I have the 9cell on my M1530 so I am familiar with the pro's and con's. I just hate it because it doesn't really fit into any of my laptop bags! Haha

I read somewhere in this thread that the SXPS16 performs better with the 9 cell...? Or does it just get less hot?

If you got the 9 cell with your 1530, then you will get the same for your sxps16. I'm not sure if it performs better with 9 cell. It obv lasts longer than the 6 cell. No reason to downgrade.

I have a 9-cell on mine. At first I didn't like it, but I quickly got used to it and agree that it's actually a more comfortable position for typing. I have a little lapdesk with fans in it to help keep the computer even cooler since I had a problem with it (well, the old one) overheating in the past. This lapdesk tilts the laptop a little more forward as well, but I think this makes an even better typing position.

Thanks for the info about removing info before returning the laptop.

aizjanika has a point. While it's bigger and more bulkier than the 6 cell, it does cool your laptop better as it elevates the laptop with more air flow. :)

A note on the RBGLED. My original 1640 had the RGBLED and when I got my replacement 1645, they gave me a WLED since the replacement was brand new and they didn't make the RGBLED anymore. I could no get used to the color difference so I contacted tech support and told them my original laptop had an RGBLED and my replacement has a WLED and they sent me an RGBLED with no problems. I can't chip in on any experiences with a 9-cell though. I have always had a 6-cell. Even my new 1645 replacement came with a 6-cell.

I'm glad that they replaced your screen with an RGB that makes me feel better my 1647 it'll be under warranty till April next year and if some thing it'll go wrong I'll want definitely an RGB screen that it the only reason why I got this laptop cause of the screen!!

I think Viper receiving the RGB is the exception, not the rule. Having followed this and the many other threads regarding throttling, overheating for some time, I would say most users ask about the RGB for their replacement and are offered RAM or CPU upgrades, and are told the RGB is not available.

Well, my friend was in the same boat as me. Had a RGB but was getting a WLED. He contacted tech support and they said they can't do anything since they don't offer that screen anymore. After he got the laptop he contacted tech support, they sent out a refurb RGB screen to replace the WLED. I think if your original laptop has the RGB, it's not hard to get the RGB in the replacement.

Yeah, that's exactly what they said to me. My refurb was all damaged (there were holes and dents in the leather) so I sent them pictures and they promptly agreed to send me another RGB.

hehe I didn't mention that the 9-cell would cool the laptop better. I was just adding my opinion about the tilting/lifting not being annoying or bothersome for typing. When I first saw the 9-cell sticking out from the back of the laptop like that, I was a bit dismayed, but really it's not a problem for me. I haven't even had a problem fitting it into a regular laptop bag (leaving the battery on).

Also, I meant to comment on the DVD drive vibrating thing. My former computer (the one I just sent back) never did that, so that's why it seemed like something was wrong with the new one. I'm going to contact Dell tech support about other things, and I plan to mention this also. I don't want it replaced for now, but if it becomes a problem in future, they'll already know about it (hopefully).

I was a bit sad to say goodbye to my former computer. I'm not sure why. It was so shiny and new and pretty.

I have to admit, though, that as much as I preferred the slightly larger screen and the colors and the brightness, etc., are very different on the WLED screen, I don't mind it as much as I thought I would. Next time I buy a full-size laptop, though, I'm going to look for something with a 17" or 18" screen and with a better video card.

Don't think your set up needs the 130w adapter, but it certainly doesn't hurt to have insurance. Wait until you actually receive the system then ask to replace your adapter with the 130w.

Anything else I can ask for? Seems to be a pretty decent machine. Would those specs be considered the 1647?

    1645 = i7 quad, same mobo
    1647 = i5/i7 dual, same mobo

Everything except the cpu is identical. Different bios.

Didn't you have the 1650 x 1050 screen? They should have given you a 1920x1080... I would contact that about the screen since this one is 1600x900 - clearly not equal or better.

Hmm, what are people's experience with a replacement unit if it needs to be built? The request was dispatched by the rep about a week and a half ago and it's being 'processed'.

Then again, it took me 3 months to get my initial 1645 shipped to me so I'm not expecting miracles...
