Got this email today, looks like the revisions were made.
Update you guys when I receive it.
I posted my 3DMark scores previously, inside the 3DMark Score thread and plan to compare them to the XPS 15 scores I get.

**Was I dreaming or did I hear backlit wasn't available anymore?
I told my rep that my current S-XPS 1645 is backlit and he went right ahead and changed my incoming keyboard to backlit**

    Also :'( no slot load!

just curious. When they give you the xps15 as a replacement for the sxps 16 Do you get a brand new warranty since its a completely different system?

No ! from what I heard, the warranty on the previous laptop would be continued, no extension in it.

I just got my quote today. My old laptop cost me $1525(current market rates = 69K INR) and the proposed new one as per their valuation is also 69K.
I just checked out the Dell website, customized with the same specifications and the cart showed it as 46K INR.
I wonder why was a 46K piece was priced at 69K for a replacement ?
I sent an email stating this and attached a screen shot of it. Yet to get a reply.
    Any thoughts about this ???

@Warranty extension ... I found a year warranty and accidental damage cover in the new quoted list when my old piece warranty would end by Jan 2011. So now, I ain't sure about my earlier comment about warranty continuation thing. May be warranty would be either 1 year or the warranty continuation of the previous piece, subject to which ever is longer.

Ok, got a reply, after pressing about the issue, what they said was the maximum price of all components can be 69K. The one they mentioned was the base version, and all other upgrades up to the price can be made.
I told them that I would configure it on my own on the Dell website and send a link of it, with the restraint of the price. She kind of agreed to it, and asked me to send a copy of my wish list. [ :D]

Warranty replacement covers an EQUIVALENT or better system, its not about price but about the faces that the spec of every item needs to be the same or better.

I did think the same, but after a talk to the case manager, they told me about that the price is the factor that should not be exceeded.

The 1st Quote they sent was
    768p Screen
    i3 processor
    500gb hard disk
    1 gb graphic card
    4gb ram,etc.

    2nd quote
    768p screen
    i5 procesor
    640gb hard disk
    1gb graphic card
    6 gb ram

    my old system was
    M1530 - a 3yr old
the 3yr old screen, mean to say not even HD ready.
    Core 2 Duo processor,
    250gb hard disk
    250mb graphic card
    3 gb ram.

Isn't that supposed to be a huge upgrade ???
I'm still kind of greedy about it. I mentioned the price of each and every part and sent them another mail. Waiting for a reply.

By the way, I think prices of XPS model came down by around Rs 2000 today if my observations are right.

I have spent a long time now searching this thread for help with the wording of my demand for replacement of my sh***y laptop to dell and couldnt find any...so forgive me if my question has been answered somewhere before.

    Specs:
    IntelCore i7 Processor
    Rgb-LED
    2x2048 1333Mhz DDR3 Dual Channel
    500GB Free Fall Sensor
    9Cell 85Wh Li-ION
1GB ATI Radeon HD 4670 graphics card
    German genuine windows professional
    1 Year standard service

    Case Story:
I am in Germany. I bought a Studio xps 16 in January this year and had to have it repaired twice since. The rgb-led-screen simply stops working. In the first round I got a new rgb-screen and in the second a new hard drive. And when I got the new hard drive they installed a bloody windows 7 home edtion on it instead of windows 7 professional which i paid for.
I use my computer professionally and it takes about two days until I have it in working order with graphic design programs, screen calibration, fonts and everything...same for everyone i guess but I am VERY VEXED indeed.

Just got everything ready three days ago and guess what? yup...screens out again! I cannot believe that after almost a year after buying this wonderfully tested piece of fairy poo I still use my old sony laptop and another old desktop to actually do my work!

I now want my money back or an altogether different computer as a replacement because (also after reading about everybody elses problems with it) I have lost all trust in this product. Do you think I have a chance? how do I write to them to make it count in a legal sort of way?
I know german consumer rights are pretty good, but will I need a lawyer too see this through? Please help! Cheers, Jo.

    Oh man...
    1. If you have the Windows CoA sticker at the bottom of it, you can always type the product key through Windows Anytime Upgrade to make it back to Win 7 Pro. I upgraded my Win 7 Pro to Win 7 Ult by this way.
    2. Are you sure that the cable is not loosen?
    3. I got my replacement SXPS 16 "pretty" smooth...with the way asking them "Is there anyway to prevent this problem from occurring again?" but not demand for a replacement directly...

My wife's SXPS 1640 has been throttling since day one, only we didn't know what the cause of all the "random" slowdowns were during gaming until I found this thread. Thanks to Throttlestop I was able to confirm that in fact her P8700 was throttling the minute I would start Prime95 and Furmark, with my mulitpliers dropping from 9.5 to 6.00 instantly, on both battery and A/C.

I called support and they sent out the new 130 watt adapter and had a tech come out to replace the motherboard. I've since tested everything again and the weird part is it no longer throttles on A/C power only on battery (high performance power plan).

Since this only fixed most of the problem by no longer throttling when plugged in, I'm wondering what the best course of action is to try and have this system replaced? I paid a lot of money for this laptop and want one that performs 100% as advertised 100% of the time.

In General I am ok with it, thought I am sad to go to the FUGLY xps 15 vs my pretty S-XPS 16. But they keep ignoring the screen! I paid a lot for the RBGLED screen. How do I make then see that a 720p lcd is NOT the same as a 1080p RGBLED?

So they are trying to tell me that the listed LCD is actually the RGB-LED screen. Is that so? Can anyone verify their own machine's specs for me?

There is no RGBLED screen for the XPS 15. The Dell rep is probably confusing RGBLED with B+RG LED, which are not the same thing. That said, the B+RG monitor in the XPS 15 is supposed to be as good, if not better, than the old RGBLED.

Actually its a B-RG LED screen ".6FHD" means its a full hd and thats the only option for full hd.

Its comparable to the sxps screen.

    -----------------sxps 16 screen ----- xps 15
    color gumat------120% >>>>> 98%
    contrast----------500:1 <<<<< ~700:1

But you still have a case here as you paid 300$ for the upgrade and the xps 15 screen is just a 130$ upgrade.

I'm currently going through a system exchange process for my sxps 1645 that has serious overheating problems. Dell is claiming the system exchange is for a XPS 17 which I dont want. I'm in college and carrying around a 15in laptop is kinda big but a 17in would be brutal. I don't understand how the XPS 15 isn't a suitable exchange?

    Finally confirmed my order.
To the newbies, your replacement would be exactly the same amount as your old piece. You can configure it on your own and push for its acceptance.

My old M1530 cost me $1525 on purchase. 3 years back Dollar amounted to around Rs 40 and now it rose to Rs 45. So, the valuation was done at the new rates of foreign exchange, which amounted to Rs 69K.(PS: Old one cost me Rs 60K only). As for the replacement, I configured it on the Dell website with a limit over the price at Rs 69K. While on the phone with the representative it overshot to Rs 70K, but she said that they won't mind the higher price and would round it off as Discount.

    Old Specs:
    XPS M 1530
    Core 2 Duo Processor/15'3" LCD Screen/3GB RAM/250 Hard Disk/250MB Graphic Card/Normal Keyboard/6 Cell Battery/90W Adapter

    Accepted Replacement:
    XPS 15
    i7 740QM/15'6" B+RGLED/4GB RAM/640 Hard Disk/2GB Graphic Card/Back lit Keyboard/9 cell battery/130W Adapter.

Expecting my delivery by 21 Dec. I know its a month long, but I guess its worth the wait. [ :)]

Thanks to the forum and all you lads. I did pick up some valuable opinions and hopefully put the right leg forward.

Just a follow up to my throttling on battery issue. After the 2nd battery replacement the issue still persisted that my 1640 was throttling while on battery. I called into XPS support and the tech on the phone remote connected to my system to see if they could fix the problem. I showed him Thottlestop running with Prime 95 and Furmark and that the laptop was clearly throttling on battery but running fine on A/C.

He proceeded to tell me there was nothing wrong with my hardware and that this was a "feature" of the 1640 to conserve battery life. I responded that this feature was never advertised and if it was advertised that my laptop would run at 50% speed on battery I would have purchased something else. I asked about the replacement promised on the last support call and was told that no replacement would be issued due to the hardware running "as designed" and to call software support to further troubleshoot the issue.

I then proceeded to email [email protected] and fill out the unresolved issues support webpage, detailing my dealing with technical support, the promise made regarding a replacement system, and the lack of resolution. This was at roughly 11am yesterday, by 4:30pm I had a phone call from executive customer care offering a replacement.

This is what has been offered:

Overall a very fair and equal replacement for my current 1640, P8700, ATI 3670, 320GB HD, 4GB RAM.

Just thought I'd share this for those having similar issues. It seems like going higher up than the phone tech support is the easiest way to permanantly fix the problem and get a system that does not throttle.

They can be either of the both. If the model your are being offered has been in the market for more than a year, I think it could be a refurbished piece, subject to availability. When you are offered a brand new model, you can be sure of a new piece.

From the posts in this thread, I can say that its a very thin line between refurbished and new. You might not find the difference unless you keenly observe. All the faulty hardware would be replaced, and only after the routine checks, you would get even a refurbished piece. Not to worry.

I repeat again, New or Refurbished is subjected to availability. If they have plenty of refurbished pieces in the market, they would be wise enough to send you one.

I've gone through the whole throttling issue with Dell. Strangely enough they didn't offer me a replacement at all. I'm getting ALL of my money back (over NZ$3300), this is after 11 months use.

I only brought up the issue with Dell on the 14th, tech replaced motherboard 17th (same 4670, not 5730 even though they said it would be), complained again the 18th, new 130W adapter (even though I had one from somewhere else) on the 19th, complained again and sent my case manager some TS and GPU-Z logs on the 23rd, offered full refund today 25th.

No mention of 5730 motherboard replacement again, and only a brief mention of a system replacement on the 18th.

Did this happen to anyone else?

Problem is, now I wont have a notebook til' Sandy Bridge, but I guess I could get a cheap portable while waiting.

The old warranty or 1 year fresh warranty, which ever is more.

Since my old warranty will be ending in 2 months, I am offered a 1 year renewed warranty.

I had in my order the Seagate wit hthe free fall sensor. When my hard drive failed i opened it up to find that it was a hitachi. I called dell telling them to send me the seagate and they sent me the wrong HDD. This time it was the toshiba. It does not have the free fall sensor does it? The dell guy i was talking to said it had it but the site description does not mention it. I am mad because i lost a lot of my information the first time it failed on me and now they are playing games with me by sending me the wrong HDD.
Also this toshiba one makes an annoying ticking sound!

Yes, that name looked familiar so I checked my emails. I dealt with him. Man he was a jerk! In the end I got everything I wanted but I had to fight and play hard ball with him. It was a painful process. Had he just let me get what I wanted on the first call, it would have been much easier.

If you want info on mine, just check the 1st post of this thread..I started it :)

    Hey thanks.

Yes he was a lil' bit of a jerk.
I played hardball too, and ended up getting a full refund for my system after 11 months use.
    NZ$3300

Still awaiting the payment though, only sent it back on Monday.
Hopefully I wont have anty issues getting the full refund.

    Hello friends,

    My SXPS 1645 Config :

    i7 720
    FHD WLED Display
    ATI HD 5730
    DVD RW Slot Load

Had throttling problems for 3 months ( System is 3 months old ) with choppy games and distorted Sound after few minutes of game. Replaced everything except HDD and Display, without any improvement... So naturally asked for Replacement Laptop. My case was Handled by Mr.Gurushankar. The guy was excellent in follow up and He accepted for replacing me new one in half hour time ( believe it or not.. I requested him, he said he will call back in one hour, but called me back in half hour, accepting my request ) . I think its only happened for me or any one out there ?

And I have not yet been sent a Quotation.. Any idea What it might be? I am afraid of getting GT435M, cos it is lower than HD 5730.. Do any of you guys know when is XPS 17 hitting India? It has GT445M + 3GB DDR5 Memory... :D

And do they offer any option to pay more and go for some higher option like M15x Alienware?

Well, anything above a HD 5730 is fine for me.... Despite Driver issues, I love ATI.

Hope Dell does not forget India altogether in XPS 17... Its frustrating to believe that India is one of the best markets for Dell and yet we do not have customizable Alienware products :realmad: And they say they are happy being Number 1 in India, where as truly they think Indians are Dumb to accept whatever they offer.

    Hi comrades,

I just came across a typical Dell-ish confusion.. I am in India, and expecting a replacement for my SXPS 16 with a XPS 15. Normally, Dell advertises XPS 15 has High fidelity JBL with 12 W subwoofer and 2 X 4W speakers. But in India, there is a statement from Dell that laptop has 2x3W Speakers, with 6W peak performance, 2.0 JBL speakers with MaxxWave Audio enhancement ( not MaxxAudio 3). Is this a clever trick played by Dell? Can anyone from India or Asia confirm that Dell comes with a 20W Speaker or 6W speaker ( Dell advertises the laptop with speakers as the best part, yet they fool most people. So Sad )

Exact Thought. Had they put in a HD 5850 or atleast 445M, it would have been good.Throw in RGBLED and a firewire, we have an excellent system... :realmad: I wont call this a freedom world ( atleast in choosing configuration for a good Laptop ).

Hey, is that really XPS 15 specs? I doubt, as the screen is 768p ( basic), but here it is 720p. And i found out that the audio configs differ for 14,15 and 17.... Here are the info needed, mostly unnoticed by buyers.. Look carefully in Speakers config...

But the prob is, They declare 2.0 speakers for all xps products in India..

Well, Got an inside information from Dell ( not that much inside, though ). India wont be getting XPS 17 for next three months, and they dont believe India will get after three months too... When Dell revises the Studio series after the launch of sandybridge release, XPS 17 maybe available as an interim ( this is what he suggested )... More Good news... Next revision of Dell with SandyBridge will bring in option for both AMD 6000 series cards and nVidia 500 series cards ( mostly GT540 for 15.6 )... Wish my laptop had gone faulty after 3-4 months... Could have had a chance to replace with SandyBridge... :(

guys, Dell has agreed to send me a system replacement (due to overheating), is there any chance that I can convince them to replace my 1645 with an alienware?
