Hey , Does Dell replacement system comes with all the required DVD's ? Or we have to suffer with the lack of those ( like driver dvds and etc that came with the original setup ) Do they pack and give the new replacement in the Carton we give them?

I recieved my replacement XPS15 packaged the same as brand new with all discs included. As far as sending it back they haven't mentioned it to me or sent me a shipping slip for it. They're supposes to call me Tues to check on the replacement and make sure I'm happy with it so I'll ask about it then.

Does anyone know if part number YR2XT for the SXPS 16 is an LED screen?

YR2XT MODULE, LIQUID CRYSTAL DISPLAY, 15.6, HIGH DEFINITION+, LOW COST, 1645/1647

I know this is a XPS 16 replacement thread but, I finally got my m1530 exchanged for a SXPS 1645. However, while the screen resolution is 1600 x 900 higher then my 1440x900, it doesn't look as nice or bright as my old screen. So anyone know if its LED backlit and its it possible to change the screen.

For the replacement does the warranty just carry over from the old system or can I ask for an extended warranty in case of failure.

They are offering one year complete cover for replacements... I must mention this.... I dont know why people dont like facing dell india customer representatives in phone... They are awesome and technically sound too. They are way better than routed off calls to australia and malaysia during weekends, who doesnt want to understand the problem... My estimated delivery date was 11jan, but tht has been changed to 6 jan and i believe ill get it before that since my orderis in transit. More over, the process was smoothest ever, it took 15 min to make representative undrstand the problems of old laptop and he immediatly accepted for replacing...

Hats off to Dell Customer care... Just make sure you speak some technical words and complicated english words, so your requests become processed soon :)

I wasn't given the option of going over the specs of this machine before production, if I was I would have tried to trade 36 months Mcafee for a 9 cell battery at least, since I will be uninstalling Mcafee anyway.
Does everything look ok? If I could upgrade anything because of losing my RGBLED I guess it would be in the warranty department since my warranty goes out in 1 month. It may run out before the system even comes in.
If anyone thinks this offer should be improved in any way just let me know, they are supposed to call me monday. I sure hate to give up my screen!

First post, take it easy on me, and thanks for reading!

Hmm...very nice replacement system. I essentially have the exact same SXPS 1645 (except for CPU) as you do, and that replacement would be what I would want :). I also understand your reluctance to give up the RGBLED, it's a special screen. As of now though, there's not much you can do about it but request and bump-up in some other department for the loss of the screen quality (RGBLED to WLED) AND for the loss screen resolution (from 1980x1080 to 1600x900). I would say either ask for a bump in warranty as you were thinking or a 9 cell battery (keep the Mcafee, don't let them take it away if they don't have to), or an SSD. Personally, I would go for the SSD as that would help performance quite a bit (at least 128GB, I think Dell might have higher). Though it depends on what you feel you really need, but try not to let them take anything away; only argue for one of those three upgrades on the basis of you losing the RGBLED.

EDIT: Welcome to NBR as well :D

I could not give up the RGB- In fact I was offered a replacement for my white XPS ( after the warranty ) for issues that started before the warranty was up. I declined and made them fix it. I might have accepted the R+GB but not the 720P screen, it would have been clausterphobic.
Now im entertaining selling my XT2 and getting an Adamo, or MacBook Pro 13 to compliment my pair of XPS 16s-

NewB Here... I just contacted Dell through their support chat about my 1640 having throttling issues. I have never noticed this in the year and a half I have owned the laptop until I attempted to start playing games on it. Within 10 minutes the laptop begins to heat up and the fans roar... after that it's just choppy and Norton pops up saying the PC is using 100% of the CPU... which is just crazy.

Within the first two minutes of the support chat the tech immediately knew of the issue, and starting the process of sending me a 130W adapter. He and his supervisor were both certain that this would solve my issue.

We shall see, and I will post back with results.

They are going to do a follow up call after the adapter arrives to make sure I am satisfied.

I'm currently chatting with a rep and we finally got to the point where I'm going to be getting a system replacement. I currently have a studio XPS 1645, do they usually replace them with another of the same model, or the newest ones (normal XPS)?

    Thanks

I talked to the rep again and I'm getting a "new" system with the same specs, they said it shouldn't have any of the problems because they've updated the hardware and software (I won't be holding my breath).

I've been through a lot of stuff with mine as well. They gave me an option to get my motherboard and/or hard drive replaced again. I told them I'll take the system replacement option and they said ok, lol.

To answer my own question, I was offered the exact same system as I originally got and they assured me that I wouldn't have any problems with it. I told them I was still concerned because of what I've been hearing about nothing really being fixed but ok, I'll try it.

Today I got a call and they said they would be giving me an XPS 17 with equal or better stats! I said that'll do!

Well they had logged into my computer a couple times and made sure everything was updated and replaced the motherboard and a couple of other parts multiple times.

They wanted to do an OS reinstall but I told them I didn't want to do that because I had read elsewhere that it's not a software issue. I told them that I purchased this computer so I could use it portably and it almost wouldn't function unplugged.

    Good luck!

just make sure they offer you equal or better specs accross the board, if you have a 1080p screen on ur SXPS16 there is no option for that on an XPS17

Nice! I hope you do as well. I remember 'back in the day' refunds were hard to come by when we all first started this..

I fortunately haven't had any issues with my replacement..I'm very happy with it. I use the laptop fully. All my ports are occupied, esata, displayport, hdmi, etc..I can't complain. I only wish I could have a quad core and unfortunately, a nvidia gpu (premiere is gpu accelerated by CUDA based cards only) as I spend the majority of my time in Premiere cs5.

Anyway, a me from a year ago would hate to say this, but I love my xps 16. RGBLED is amazing.

P.s. How can I obtain a remote for this? and does remote work like a mouse? Or only for media center? I really want like an air mouse/remote that control my desktop. I dont want a wireless mouse nor do I wanna spend $150 on the logitech air, even though I want it! haha

Just spoke to a guy from Dell about this and they're getting me a 130W adaptor as my 90W has developed the loud buzz and is frayed at the cable input point.

Also replacing my LCD (for keyboard marks on the screen) and palm rest (for a failed spring in the mouse and falling off LCD bumper)! :)

Basically getting mostly new parts for free! :D

Hey tenknics, I can't remember but did you originally come from an M1530? If you did, maybe you can do like I did, and request that Dell send you a remote (the small one that fits in the express slot) based on the fact that you had one in your M1530. I did that and received one immediately for no cost after I got my replacement back in February.

The remote is small, black and pretty slick. It has a Windows Media Center button that opens WMC  . It also has an on/off button that puts the computer to sleep. The volume buttons control the volume inside and outside of WMC. There's a "Go Back" button that allows you to go to the previous section of whatever program/folder it is you are currently working on; for example the browser goes to the previous page/folder goes to previous folder, etc. Then the arrow buttons allow you to highlight items (then press "OK" to select/open them), like for example on your desktop you can open programs by highlighting them and in M$ Word you can actually move the blinking cursor around with the arrow buttons. It has rewind/forward and skip buttons that work in your music player (iTunes for me). In short the remote actually works pretty well for something so simple.

If you do have to pay for it, I can assure you it won't cost anywhere near $150  (Probably not even up to a tenth of that price). Tell me if you want to know more about the remote.

They're all nice and shiny though :D

The monitor is a big improvement

The guy was saying it's a pretty large design flaw on behalf of Dell that the backlit keyboard uses a bit of power, which makes it run hotter, which makes the fans kick dust up, through the holes of the backlit keyboard, and, because it's so hot, the dust basically burns onto the LCD. Also, the cooling vent emits straight up onto the LCD, which makes the problem worse.

He reckoned that the improved power unit may help keep it a bit cooler and reduce the problem.

Every refurb part is tagged as refurb regardless of new or not. I had at least 15 laptops repaired in '10 and I got new parts 90% of time.

First the Games started to act as if I had a Radeon 9000Series card and playing crysis at full details, but actually i was Playing Plants vs Zombies LOL.... Then, Throttling Issue, ur system gets slower after 20-30 min usage ( well, any video played can stutter in 30 min or so, if so, you can state this as an issue and ask for replacement).
They changed my Motherboard, alas, The system dint want to boot up at all.... The Engineer dint know what to do and reported that I should ask for Replacement. So I called them up and requested to replace and I strictly mentioned not to talk about replacing any other parts as I was " Disgusted with the parts and bad design for a Costly Machine" ;) :)

Hence they had to.... ( I repaired my system myself after the engineer had gone and was using till they took it for replacement though) ..

If you see any fault in ur system, just as for replacement...

    You might experience these...

    1. Slower System, occasional unresponse from desktop
    2. Stutter while playing videos off DVD or HDD
    3. Games play very sluggish irrelevent of game
    4. Battery donot charge, instead it would show that Wrong Charger in place, and pl replace it... LOL... It was a comedy for me.. I had 1% battery remaining for almost a week, without getting shutdown nor charging :)
    5. Unlimited System Crashes which would make you kill your system before it dies :)

Anyone of above Isuue, + Overheating, you are right in asking for a replacement... You might get a GOOD XPS 15, since it is WAY better than 1645, even with a lower graphics card, since the implementation is better and good airflow. I am playing most games with high- very high details @ 1080p

    ;)

Dell has now sent me a total of two mother boards, three heatsinks, a thousand thermal pads, all new plastics, vents, bottom cover, and laptop base, three adapters.

For over a week I couldn't get anyone to call me back. Everytime I went into chat is was the same thing... lets send a tech, lets mail some parts... finally a tech randomly called and said it didn't make much sense to keep replacing parts. They wanted me to send it to some "depot" that would take a few days, I declined. I know this throttling isn't going to be an issue for some guy testing for an hour or less.

So he offered to send me a XPS 17, then said no shortly after I agreed... then said he would send a replacement 1640. He sent me the specs, and they are all generally the same, however I wanted RED and it was BLACK. For about five minutes he continued to tell me my only choice was the BLACK or send the laptop in. Then out of the blue he had a RED one, with upgraded RGB LED screen... so he sent that one. It lacks blue tooth an the backlit board, however he said after my replacement arrived to email him and he would mail the parts... we shall see. He did however give me a real email unlike the first dip with a noreply BS email. The hard drive is larger, but RPMS are slower... so I think I will just attempt to keep my smaller drive, or buy my own if the system doesn't throttle. I saw in the specs it was arriving with a 90 watt adapter and he said just to keep my 130 watt.

I hope this gets resolved soon. I have pleaded for a refund, and have been denied. I just want to change models, even though the appearance of this machine is very modern. The look does me no good without the performance to back it up.

^ I know what you mean. Hang in there. Hopefully this replacement system works out for you (You'll like the RGB-LED :)). If it doesn't work out, try pleading for a refund again, they will have to break sometime. Or you can try for the different model again (the XPS 15 or 17). The XPS 15/17 generally have better luck performing as advertised compared to the SXPS 164X's they replaced (aesthetics aside). Good luck though.

Got my replacement today. I am VERY displeased. I knew the laptop would be refurbished, but most of the time they take the time to make em look like new. This one has awful scratches, chips, and gunk in the port holes. I am very very disappointed. There are actual nicks on the "glass" on the screen. The leather is very worn and has a groove. Mine looks brand new, I take care of my stuff, the resale on these are already low... I dont want to further destory any chances of selling this by having one that looks this used.

I emailed my "supervisor", been five hours, nothing yet. We shall see. He should have just sent the XPS 17 like he started to. This is utter BS. I am at least checking the throttle on the replacement now... if it works, I will attempt to swap all the parts over to it... the RGB is nice however...

Sorry been offline for a bit - busy with work

The XT2 is my Travel machine-

The 2 XPS's I share with my 2 daughters, so which ever XPS is available I will use. On the white one now. I wanted two to be identical that was the other reason I kept the 1647 over the xps15

My Wife uses the Vostro, - Which will be replaced with an XPS14.

Well, this drama is over for me. The replacement 1640 throttles just like the original. It did take a few minutes longer however. My supervisor called me the other day to check up and I told him I was very unhappy, that my sales guy picked this laptop out for me knowing what I would use it for, and I am unable to use it like I would like. He's a nice guy, told me to give him a day... he called back and cleared the way for a full refund. So he told me if I wanted a new Dell to look and see what I wanted and he would get me the most discount. After a few days I emailed him, to which he called and said he would call a sales member, who called within hours and gave me a very nice deal, with extra warranty on a Alienware M17x... I liked the RGB so much I ordered it with this one. :)

The XPX 16 was a nice looking machine, and for everyday use like internet, email, and word processing, its more than fine... even playing DVDs... just not any long time gaming or use of a graphic filled program.

Good luck to all... thanks for sharing.

Very nice end to your story. The M17x should keep you going for a while. However, as for the SXPS 16, it sort of depends on how lucky you are. With some work (using thermal paste, BIOS A09, cleaning vents, using 130w adapter, etc) and some purchases (notably a Zalman NC2000 cooler) I can game on mine for as long as I want without trouble. GPU temps average around 81C on all games. So it really is a coin toss. Enjoy that Alienware though (RGB-LED is always a good choice)...maybe some day I'll step up to one of those.

    E.D.U. Thanks for your reply.

I paused for a moment today while packing up and wiping the XPS 16, it truly is a nice looking machine, that handled well for the most part. I had all the original boxes, and bags, papers and cds... i just hope i dont have a problem with the refund part, im not supposed to. my supervisor said he had the restocking fee removed, but couldnt tell me the exact amount id receive... not sure if its just cause he doesnt know, or what. i just better get back the full amount as promised. kinda scary.

If I do, that means i will really have only put about $900 towards this new laptop, so they get something back too.

Ill keep you posted on the refund.

I have a XPS 1645 (i7 720+6GB+500GB+5730+BD RE). I have been facing the heating issue since day one. It progressively got worse. I have had my processor, motherboard, palmrest, heat sink, thermal pads, LCD screen replaced over 3 times now. I still have heating and throttling issues for which I was offered a replacement which was an XPS 15.

Since BD RE is not available on the XPS 15 I was offered i7 820+8GB+640GB+435M+BD ROM. But I really want the BD RE and would now have to go in for an external drive. I was wondering if I should just take the replacement they are offering or should I wait for the L502x which will have the BD RE option. I am not in any great hurry to get the laptop replaced. Other than gaming everything else works just great.

Should I take it now or wait it out?

^The decision really is for you to make on this one. As much as I want to say yes wait it out (as the new SB processors seem like they're worth it), there's no guarantee that Dell will offer you a L502x as a replacement. I don't see why it wouldn't be possible to get the L501x they offered as a replacement and then have Dell send you out a BD-RE when it becomes available with the L502x release (the specifications should remain the same for both systems, L501x and L502x, so a simple BR drive switch should work.) I suggest finding out if that would be possible from the dell rep that's handling this for you, then let them send you an e-mail in writing verifying that they will honor it, if they can (just for back-up).

On the other hand, if you can get Dell to tell you in writing that they can give you the L502x as a replacement when available then I'd definitely go for that, since you aren't in a hurry. Ask some questions then make your decision. At the end of the day, either of the options you take wouldn't be too bad at all :). Good luck

I have a XPS1640, it totally sucks for anything graphic intensive. I've had the service tech at my house or office at least 4 times. I agreed to have them replace the motherboard, heat sink, fan and processor 1 more time. The phone tech said if I still have problems after this go round(I wonder), they will replace the computer.

Should I wait a few months for the sandy bridge chip? I don't even know what that is, I just heard that they are better. I also have a blu ray burner in this computer. It is vital that I have a br burner in my new system. I didn't see any for sale now that had a brd burner. I have the warranty until 10/11. So I can afford to wait a few months if necessary. I'm not really sure what to do.

I am in the same position you are. As I was replied to earlier, there is no guarantee that the replacement will be a L502X with the Sandy Bridge. It might just end up being a slightly bumped up config with the blue ray burner. Anyway I guess we will have to wait till March or April to know exactly whats what.

I don't know where your from, I am from India and from the day the SB XPS launches in US will probably take a month to reach our shores.

I'm in the US. I'm gonna let them waste their money and replace the hardware. Then when I figure out whats going on with the new chips I'll replace.

Now obviously hardware wise this is a great replacement and an upgrade in many ways. I just loved the design of the 1647 and the alienware is pretty ugly!

Those who have made the switch what do you think?

Should I push for an XPS 15 instead? (I reckon that's pretty ugly as well but in a more boring/safe way.

Just curious as to your guys thoughts.

    Many thanks!
