    Thanks for the info ;) Maybe you could also inform if there is any significant difference in weight compared between HD and SSD?
    Thank you in advance ;)

    500gb is 110grams, 128 ssd is 81grams, 256gb ssd is "Similar in weight to a 128GB SSD (81 grams)" so probably ~90grams

    @XPSPL

    Run Prime95 as Small FFTs. IIRC, that is the highest CPU stress mode.

    101C on the GPU? Holy crap, that's the highest I've ever seen. You weren't blocking the vents in any way, right? The laptop wasn't on a mattress or carpet, right? And you have the 130W?

    It's definitely throttling, if you're curious. This may more "on-topic" in the throttling thread, too.

    @Watergate

    When I held the 500GB in one hand and the 256GB in the other, they seemed quite a bit more than 20g difference in weight. Honestly, the SSD felt like an empty case. Maybe just a subconscious thing, not sure.

    @dotrunghieu

    It doesn't particularly need a screen protector. If you want one, the better. A wipe with my shirt usually gets her sparkling, :)

    :confused: Doesn't that scratch the screen. Considering it's some kind of plastic and not glass?

    I don't think it scratches it :eek: (*panics and rushes the laptop screen next to the lamp*).

    It looks fabulous now that I've checked. Some persistent streaks (gonna need some micro-fiber or something), but otherwise scratch-free.

    IDK, maybe my shirts are soft?

    I am at least satisfied getting the HD 5730 however instead of 4670. Wether or not I would trade that off for the RGB LED is hard to say. If it means 0 throttling problems then I will be extremely satisfied.

    is the heat vent problem exists for all the xps 1645's or just some? I read another thread about the heat vent blocked by the screen, and the gpu will get overheat.
    do you all have this problem? I like the xps 16 but this is the main problem I concerned about, cuz I will do a lot of gaming.

    I heard some people complain, screen is scraped easily. Because Dell XPS 16 don't have space between screen and keyboard. I don't know that is right or wrong. Another thing, Dell XPS 16 is very hot when people play hard games, right! That is not good after 1 or 2 years, laptop will have some bad problem.

    Ohhhh! That why I looked your posts, I didn't see any information about it. I thought you got it. I am interested because you first person will get new VGA of Dell. Thus, I need some information about it. I am waiting your laptop.

    Thank you for making a comment. Actually I have no idea what the net weight will be on my new xps. Currently I have an Inspiron 9400 from 2006 with ''17'' Full HD 1080p screen and this laptop i heavy ;) That is why I asked with regards for the difference between a regulary HDD and SSD ;)

    Have a nice weekend

    Ibrahim,
    Laptop was on the table plus I have 9-cell battery that makes back of my laptop elevated a little bit (should make airflow more efficient).
    But the construction of air vents in 1645 is a crap. Having my screen at appprox. 110 deg. angle from the keyboard some of the air vents are somehow covered by the screen. To make them fully unblocked I need to position my screen at approx. 60 deg. angle which is impossible to work with.

    I'll try to stress with settings you mentioned and on the battery as well.

    101C was just for the second or two, generally GPU was around 95C. Affirmative, I have 130W.

    oh... then how do you guys handle the heat vent problem? I mean it seems to be a big deal, it's a design flaw.

    It is a design flaw and it is very annoying (to even look at), but the thing is really that people use their computers for different tasks. So there are different variables that could factor into the heat vent actually being a problem.

    Some don't stress their laptops that much so they never reach those "high" temps and wattage requirements that would induce any throttling (never gets too hot). Additionally some people have configurations that just plain don't throttle as much as some others, also meaning that it doesn't get too hot. Some people don't even see the heat vent as an issue as they don't realize that they have any problems, as Dell masks these problems quite well. Then some people are just plain lucky :) and never get that hot despite how much stress they put on the system (rare).

    I reluctantly bought a cooler and reapplied thermal paste severally, so I guess that's how I handle the stupid heat vent design... :eek:

    hi,
    Well i am facing this weird problem, every time i turn on my system after a while it end's up booting into diagnostics mode. I allowed it to test once, and it showed no problems. BUt, still my system boot into diagnostics on every first try to hard boot. Always need to use Alt+ clt + del combo on first start.
    One thing that i noticed was that intial on first boot try, only three leds of volume control touch botton remain on . Then only volume decress touch botton remains on before ending up in diagnostics. :confused:
    and further to worsen this, my Integrated LAN card has stoped working. It has completely disappeared from windows. and the light on it also don't work any more when pluged with RJ45 from the router. :mad:
    If any one could make something out of this, please help.

    another thing,gpuz sensor shows my shader temp to be around 400,000+ . Is this too normal ?
    View attachment GPU-Z Sensor Log.txt

    Thank you !

    Dell initially sent out 90w power adapters with the 1645s but it turns out they draw more power than that so now 130w is the standard

    The RGB LED, i7 Quad Core and Radeon 4670 together under load (or just the i7 now coupled with everything else) draw too much power for the adapters to handle. Originally the notebook shipped with a 90w adapter and they replaced that with a 130w adapter which still isn't enough power under load in some configurations.

    Just for thought; Has anyone tried using an even bigger adapter than the 130? Like one from an alienware?

    -Curious if it would hinder our throttling situation at all.

    I'm pretty sure I'll be getting the 130watt adapter as they started sending those out mainstream over a month ago...I'm also hoping the HD 5730 will take care of the throttling since it uses 10watts less.

    Got my 1645 the other day (my very first laptop!): I7 1.6 Mhz, RGBLED 1080p, Radeon 4670, 6GB DDR3. Runs pretty sweet, and I'm loving the picture quality with movies so far. I fired up my copy of Mass Effect 2 on it as well, just to see how it'd fare. I managed to get about 20-25 fps on max settings at full 1920x1080 res, but it does lag hard from time to time (throttling, I guess, though I've got a 130W AC) and dip as low as 10-15 fps in the big fights.

    Is this below average performance, or is this the best I can expect with my current specs at max settings? (I should say that it on max settings it runs pretty breezy at 1280x1080 - 30-40 fps).

    Got 6949 with 3DMark06, btw.

    Idle temps for the cores and gpu are about 50-55 C right now (the comp. has been on for about 10 hours). Just playing the game for a bit takes them all up to about 80. I don't have time to play it for several hours right now, but I can tell you that it does get pretty hot. However, the fps of 20-25 is what I get immediately after starting the computer up, not after an all-night gaming session or something like that.

    Right. There these two little rubber things on the far edges of the speakers that give a bit of room between the keyboard and screen. So there is definitely room. But then these rubber things leave a little residue on the black bezel of the screen. That's usually what I have to wipe off, lol.

    @Watergate

    The SXPS 16 should be a nice upgrade. :)

    You have A09? 7K is about right with the i7-720QM/4670.

    I guess, then, that it is fine with Mass Effect. The 4670 isn't absolutely amazing, but it's pretty decent.

    Make sure you've got the Power Plan set to maximum performance, too. Update the GPU drivers, maybe?

    How are you guys getting these new 1645s with the RGBLED screens. When I tried to order one a few days ago I was unable to.

    Hey Potato King, how unbearable is the heat when playing Mass Effect. I am starting to give consideration to changing my order to an Alienware M15X. I am only a casual gamer at best but I don't my computer being ruined by excess heat.

    But, my system I just ordered has the ATI 5370 if that makes a difference.

    Yeah, I don't want to badmouth the computer or anything - it's been running like a dream with everything else so far. I didn't get it primarily as a gaming machine (got a desktop with a 4870 for that), but obviously it's nice if I can run some of my favourite games on it (I'm a huge ME nerd) when I'm away from home. Also, I don't really want to reduce the resolution because 4:3 just looks really weird on the widescreen.

    I have A08 BIOS btw, and GPU drivers are already up to date.
