anyone know if its possible to just call Dell and tell them which components you want in your Studio XPS, or do you have to follow what the builds are on the website? I dont think I need a quad core and 8gb of ram, but would like the RGB LED screen...

@ wetcardboard, of course you can call them :). Sometimes, you can get components by calling that you can't get from the website. Besides that, you can always get a pretty good discount from Dell by calling (up to 20% for some lucky people; In some cases it can take some perseverance ). I'm not sure about the RGB screen being available anymore but it's definitely worth a try. Here's a LINK to a fantastic thread that can really help you when ordering by phone. The tips are pretty darn cool and I'm definitely calling them the next time I'm ordering a laptop.

Can someone confirm this for me:

Closing the lid DOES NOT turn off the screen. I tried to leave it just a few mm open and saw that the screen was still on. This would make sense as the palm rest gets unbearably hot if I leave the lid closed for an hour or so: the heat from the RGBLED!

It depends on your settings for what the laptop does when you close the lid. For me it goes to sleep meaning the screen is of course off. Maybe yours is set to "do nothing"?

That's true...it is set to "Do Nothing"....going to change that now. I guess I can suffer to log myself in again, lol.

    Thanks, Fenikkusu. :)

Regardless of the specs inside, the Studio series is more mainstream while the SXPS is their flagship lineup. That'd be at the very least an aesthetic downgrade. Plus I've looked at the Studio 17...they're bulky.

I'll be receving a 1645 in a few weeks as a replacement to my 1640 with throttling issues.

    i7-820qm (up from C2D)
    8GB RAM (up from 4)
256 SSD (up from 128 SSD)
    16" RGBLED
    ATI 5650 (up from 4670)
    Blu-Ray (up from DVD /RW

So I'm rather happy about the upgrade ;)

Closing the lid still turns off the screen if you have your power plan set to have the laptop do nothing when you close the lid, at least it should do. If you close it on do nothing without any ambient lights, you should see both the screen turn off and the keyboard backlight turn off when you get to the last couple of millimetres before closing, if not, there'd be loads of light leakage from the gaps.

It usually is a mystery as to what specs you will receive, but just remember equal or better. It is usually better, so you can really just forget the equal part, . Hopefully you get a new one with a 5730. The fun (and the agony) is in the waiting and speculation about what you'll get ;) . I know I speculated some pretty ridiculous specs, lol, but I was still very happy with what I got. Good luck!

But I wouldn't take 6Gigs of RAM. I prefer similar size RAM modules, so eiter 4 or 8 Gigs.

Does this sound like a good price for the system?

XPS 16 1645; WLED 1080p; i7-720; ATI 5730 1GB; 8GB DDR3 1333; 500 GB HD; Blu-ray player; bluetooth 370; wimax wireless card; 3 year accidental coverage; 9 cell battery; no leather (did not see the need).

I was going to do the 6 GB of Ram but they were only going to lower the price by $30 so I figured I would get it.

Maybe overkill with the accident warranty but have children and wanted to protect the screen.

Just ordered today. Is it worthwhile to get the leather?

    Leather:

It adds some class. Makes gripping it easier, I imagine versus all plastic. I like it.

    SSD:

I went 500GB HDD -> 256GB SSD. It's definitely a whole lotta fast. Everything: installing programs, uninstalling programs, application launching, boot-up, shut down, sleep resume/enter, searching, etc. I love it. Would I myself have stomached the extra $495? Nope. I'm stingy, but the upgrade is nice.

    Hey guys,

Is it likely to get your notebook before the estimated delivery date? When I called in they said they would expedite my order and the EDD is June 14th which is a Monday...it would be GREAT if it was here on Friday the 12th :D

If it is less than 50 bucks I would probably do it... If you are spending this much anyways might as well make it look the best it can... Personally without it there is just too much plastic.

My XPS does not have leather, and sadly I haven't seen one with leather so I can't make a comparison. For me though, I really like the look of it (sans leather) and though I might take the leather option if it was offered to me for free, it doesn't bother me that I don't have it.

    OK, got mine. :)

    ordered 05/24
    shipped 05/28
    initial EDD 06/09
    received today (ie 06/02)

I had not enough time to check it thoroughly, so just few thoughts:
    1. Unfortunately it's much bigger and heavier than I expected comparing to my M1330,
    2. Leather really adds some class,
    3. Keyboard backlight is really cool,
    4. I expected 130W adapter to be heavier and bulkier, but it's actually smaller than my 90W from M1330,

    More testing tomorrow :p

It must really depend on what components you add/change. Mine is also taking longer:

    ordered: 5/24
    EDD: 6/9
    status: in production

    Ordered: May 30th (Sunday)
    EDD: June 14th (Monday)

The trend for Canadian seems to be around 6-10 business days from production date to delivery. Im expecting mine to be here no later than next Friday (11th).
