Does the XPS 1645 with I7 720/740 with 5730 still throttle with the latest bios while playing games like BF2,crysis,dirt 2 etc which are CPU-GPU intensive??

With my configuration, I finished lately Crysis warhead using gamer/enthusiast settings and 1920x1080 resolution. CPU and GPU did not throttle, check the logs here http://forum.notebookreview.com/del...3-s-xps-1645-throttling-info-updates-413.html

This game did lag, it wasn't as smooth as it should be, but it was playable, it's annoying the first few seconds but you get adjusted to it. I also played Assassin Creed 1&2, Fallout 3 DLC, Prince of Persia Forgotten Sands, CoD 5&6, Mass Effect 2, all of those with high settings, all of them worked fine... Didn't throttle once!

I'm the same as michom. I played 2 hours of Crysis Warhead and didn't have any throttling issues. My settings were mainly on gamer and I believe that I was getting ~20 FPS which turned out to be very playable. I posted my results many many pages back but so far, in Crysis and MW2 I don't get any throttling and I have a 1645 i7-720 and a HD 5730

Well from what I've read on this forum, and I could be wrong, that people with WLED and 5730 are not having any problems, since RGBLED generated more heat and consumes more power, same goes for 4670... except few exceptions that are bound to happen. But in general, I think the SSD + WLED + 5730 is the best combination for this laptop (maybe the SSD is exaggerated) when it comes to heat dissipation and power consumption. Crysis warhead is a proof of the system limitation, it lags, fps is relatively low, and yet no throttle. Temperatures are always below 80 (I had 81C once on Core 4 after playing Mass Effect 2 for 5 hours).

And btw, I haven't done any of those hardware tweaks (dust filters, heatsink gel,...)

If you take off the fan's dust cover you can get the max CPU temperature down to 78C or so.

It's very worth it. And if DELL asks any time in the future, you can tell them that it got clogged with dust and it was impossible to clean without removing. Since it's actually attached with glue, it's also an issue to replace. DELL will not give you warranty woes over the modification.

My CPU maxes out at 78C-79C on the hottest core (cores range from 72C-79C max temps). When I replace the thermal grease, I'm hoping to get down to 75C or 76C... but maybe that's being too hopeful.

But wouldnt it be even worse if the place we stay in is kinda dusty and once that cover has been removed all that dust might get clogged in the pipes or anywhere inside???

Because of way the SXPS 16 (or any recent laptop in my experience [haven't opened up any laptop older than 3 years]) cooling system works, the air that goes in doesn't go anywhere but the heatsink. There isn't any air circulation elsewhere but the fan and heatsink, which are pretty easy to clean. You won't fill up your system with dust at all.

HOWEVER. I highly recommend that you leave the other dust covers in place. Because if you use a laptop cooler, it might force air in through these vents. And while removing these will help further cool your laptop, it'll also increase the amount of dust your system takes in as well.

    Hi guys!

two months ago i bought Dell Xps 1645 (i7-720,hd4670). Today i formated and install windows 7 again.

I lost my Roxio software for burning dvds. The discs which came with the laptop, have only the windows 7, utilities and drivers. Not the roxio software.
But i had registered my roxio software and i have the register key. Could you please tell me which is exactly the roxio software coming with Dell xps 1645, so to download it and pass my register key which i already have ?

    Thanks in advance

Is anyone else having problems with the screen not turning back on after hibernation/sleep?

Sometimes when I wake up my laptop, the screen is just blank, but the system is working (if I connect to an external screen, it works). If I then resleep, and rewake up, most of the time the screen turns back on again.

Any ideas why this is? Display driver issues I'm guessing?

I have the exact same problem, but it only happens when I hibernate. So I just disabled hibernate and either use regular sleep, or shut it off.

I like hibernation more than turning it on/off. And sleeping even.

Anyway I think it has to do with having a plug and play device (like a mouse) connected when you hibernate, and not having it connected when you wake up. Maybe. I don't really know tbh. Or maybe closing the lid before it's done going into hibernation.

The processors are designed to function at up to 100C. Things like brute-forcing a password are some of the most demanding tasks you can ask of a CPU, so it's only natural that it will heat up. I won't bother asking why you were trying to crack someone's password...

Sorry, if this question may have ask before, I did do a quick check.
Do anyone of you know , where in ati catalyst control center, where I can control the border of the image, when connect to an external TV/monitor? There is always about an inch of border around the TV, I like to be able to fill the screen completely. My other XPS m1330, allow me to adj the border , by moving the vertical and horizontal arrow to fill the screen. thanks

    Answer

The A09 bios won't be better than the A11 bios, because the A11 supposedly fixes the problems that A09 had.
People are just a bit cautious when upgrading to a new bios because Dell has released bad ones before and people have ended up bricking their machines.

It depends. Do you have the 4670 or the 5730? If you have the 5730, then leave the A11. If you have the 4670, then go back to A09.

    Hi,

I have a 8 month old studio xps 1645. It has 4 gb ram, 500 gb hdd, ati 4670, 1600X900 WLED screen and 130W adapter. I get frequent throttling, loss of performance, high temperature and blue screens problems. Dell will replace my laptop for any new dell laptop that cost around 1600$ CAD (the price I paid for my laptop 8 months ago).

My question is have all those problem been corrected on the new studio XPS 1645 model? Because for that price I can get a nice 8gb ram, 500gb hdd, ati 5730, 1920X1080 Edge to Edge screen xps 1645 model. I'm a little worried about getting another xps 1645 because of all the problems i went through, but I don't like the design of the alienware and it seems to be bit more expensive for the same specs of the 1645 model. Should I get a new xps 1645 or go for a alienware or any other dell laptop model?

Also is the Edge to Edge screen worth it? I heard that dust can get trapped behind the ''plastic'' cover screen.

    Thank you.

There's still a chance you'll get a throttling system. But the chances are lowered greatly since the model received the 5730 card.

I agree! I'd definitely say it's worth a go! Plus you're upgrading the screen to a full HD one which is verrry nice!

And also if you're feeling a bit cheeky you should tell them to swap that extra 4GB of RAM for a SSD for your troubles! :D

Go to the same place where you download the A11 BIOS and click on 'other version'. Here's the link for convenience.

In order to go from a newer bios to an older bios, you have to use a special one that won't complain. You can use the file you'll find in this thread to go back to A08, then you download and use the normal A09 file:

In the Catalyst Control Center, there is an option to adjust screen "scaling".

I don't have my external screen to test atm, but I'm pretty sure you go "Control Center -> Desktop Propeties", select the external display and then you should see a sliding scale where you can adjust the scaling. On my external I have it at 105-110% (I forget..) and it's perfect!

The screen issue still persists, although I haven't noted what is/isn't plugged in. It's not enough to justify doing anything drastic, it's just a bit annoying when it does happen.. The first time I did, I thought my screen had died!

More info would be very helpful.

Are you running on battery or AC power? What is your powerplan set to in Windows? Have you installed any new programs recently? How long has this reduction in performance been going on? Has it been constant? Is anything else besides games slower than usual? Any new drivers installed recently? Did anything physical happen to your laptop (dropped, bumped hard, spilled liquid)?

    Wow..missed many infos.. :p
ok..I'm running on AC power,in Air conditioned room..so its not throttling issues,i suppose...I haven't installed any new driver relevant to graphics.. (edit: I have installed adobe Flash player 10 plugin, Will this affect gaming?)..Reduction in performance happened mostly in second half (I'm playing PES 2010) or in other words, after playing for some time...and I dont play any other game atleast now..hmm..no physical damage..

on the whole, nothing happened differently..this problem suddenly popped up..
    one reason might be there..
I installed adobe after effects..I'll uninstall and get back to you again.. :)

    and thanks for your response

So I understand correctly: You sit down to play the game, then after playing for some period of time, the performance suddenly drops? Or was it that you have played the game a lot in the past, and now right from when you start playing, performance is bad?

    Hi,

I'm new so sorry if this is the wrong place but i'm considering buying an xps studio 16 with the Intel® Core™ i7 Processor 620M. however I have heard that there are some issues with over heating so would i be better of with an i5?

    Thanks

I have the i7 620. It gets fairly warm, but only if you're using it for high performance applications on your lap. At a desk it's fine.
It's probably one of the best processors you can get for this machine along with the i7 840 in my opinion!
