whats a good way to test whether or not my laptop is throttling?

You will get throttling depending on the applications that you run. If you don't have the latest BIOS and a 130W adapter, you can be affected. Just call Dell up and request for one.

 

I have updated the BIOS to A08 and using 130W adapter. After playing CALL OF DUTY MODERN WARFARE for 1/2 hour, the FPS decreased drastically. Am i having the GPU throttling issue.If yes, then what is the remedy. Also, How can i provide evidence to dell representative that the GPU is throttling.Do i need to record this using some application.If yes then using which application....

GPU throttling yes, there is NO remedy as this is thermally related. Some people have had success in changing out the Thermal Paste and using a Notebook Cooler.

There are TWO types of throttling with the 1645 CPU and GPU. With BIOS A.08 and the 130 Watt adapter, this is 98% fixed.

GPU throttling is a different animal and is caused when the GPU hits the 84C upper limit imposed by DELL.

Search the threads for "Throttlestop," "Prime95," "GPU-Z" and "Furmark". Throttlestop will show you your CPU throttling. GPU-Z will show you your GPU throttling. The other two are synthetic benchmarks that will push your 1645.

I ordered a NC2000 laptop cooler, it has excellent reviews on this forum, Amazon, and Newegg. My 1645 shipped yesterday with the 90 watt power supply. I'll be sure to upgrade the BIOS and request a 130 watt brick. I basically use my laptop as a desktop replacement and hardly travel, so I don't mind if it's a little larger.

 

Just got confirmation yesterday that my SXPS 1645 has shipped and should arrive on the Monday 19th. Definitely very excited, though a little concerned about the various issues mentioned. Will mostly just be a general use (surfing, watching DVDs, and the like) laptop, though I'll likely start playing some games again. If I experience any throttling problems, I'll be sure to report them here.

New XPS 16 Owner Here! So far so good. I definitely feeling happy about this laptop.
My specs:

i720QM Black 128GB SSD 16" RGBLED 4GB WIN7 ULTIMATE

I planning to upgrade the ram to 8GB. Is 8GB the max? I also plan to remove the ODD and grab another SSD.

Hopefully the next couple of days, I will have good fortune with this laptop.

 

I'm sorry to say that the studio 1645 is complete garbage. I bought one back in October 2009. It wasn't delivered until December 2009. Upon arrival the HDD was dead and needed replaced. Dell promptly replaced. Then came the whole power issue. After working with Dell for 4 months on the power issue and random lockups Dell replaced my mobo, lcd scren, palm rest and power supply. Thinking they may have actually fixed it, it ran great for about 2 hours, till it began making loud noises through the speakers. I started examining the issue, and noticed the screen they put on was all scuffed up. At that point I called Dell and demanded a refund. 4 months after initially getting this beast, it was going back.

On Tuesday I got a MacBook Pro with Core i7. It blows the dell out of the water and it built 1000x more solid. Funny thing is it was only $200 more than the Dell.

 

Sorry to hear that xoticpt, sounds like you had a real dud there. To be fair though, I know people who have had just as many problems with a MBP and other mac laptops. There are always a percentage that are just going to be trouble right from the start. In terms of cost, my SXPS 1645 cost about $1520 with tax and shipping. To get a similarly equiped MBP would cost well over $2000, probably closer to $2500, and still wouldn't have a full resolution 1920x1080 screen. I don't hate macs, but I still can't bring myself to pay the premium for them. My laptop will have a full 2 year warranty, which I'll make full use of if there are any problems, but based on recent updates, it looks like most of the CPU throttling issues have been resolved. So the main problem left is GPU throttling, which will be annoying, but I'm not a heavy gamer so I can live with it.

*edit: Just built up a MBP with the same specs (cpu, harddrive, ram, warranty, screen as good as possible) as the dell I'm getting and it costs $2373 before tax.

 

Has anyone ever seen the turbo go to 2.8?
i ran super pi to see if it would and that went to like 2.2 at most. it seems like windows 7 balances all the other openned applications across 4 cores so the cores never get to turn off. I dont really have anything open .

Also sometimes cpu-z and the turbo gadget report different frequency's from each other.

Not sure what you are talking about, mlhdk... video card perhaps? If that's your question, then the XPS 16 still ships with only the Radeon 4670.

 

Had the laptop up all day at work. No problems so far. The colors need a little adjustment, but I figure that is more personal taste than anything. Will probably have to spend some time. Other wise movies, videos, HD content looks sweet.

 

setfsb is being developed again and at least the G73 with 720 can now be OC using the tool. All they did was find the PLL and donate to get the new shareware.

Practically, I did not see the drop in performance as I did before, but the slow dropping of the multi kind of concerned me. The new system is running the i7-620m with the 130W adapter.

Does anybody know if there are any DRM restrictions on Blu-Ray movies that involve multi-screen setups? I don't think the projector has any idea that it is playing anything different from the blu-ray or the desktop, so my guess is that it would play fine. But then again, there are those who can probably just write a simple script that is ran on the OS side of things that can recognize drm content and freeze it from being displayed externally... not sure to sum it up. just got my 1645 yesterday. I like it so far. It ame with the 130W adapter and bios A08, does this mean I'm safe from the throttling issues?

Also, is there a step by step procedure of things to do to make this lappy more optimized or is it just about removing all of dell's applications?

 

Exactly.. making it run as 820 isn't pushing it hard, should be possible. All we need is the PLL but I can't find any pictures of the mobo anymore.

If someone is doing their paste they could take a look.

I have a question that i couldnt figure out by searching. For some reason when i put my computer to sleep it takes like 45 seconds and when i resume it, windoes is "resuming" and it takes another 30 seconds. On my older HP it takes like 3 seconds for each of these things to happen....is there a solution?

 

It sounds like you're actually "hibernating" your computer instead of putting it to sleep. It only does the "resuming" thing if you Hibernate, if you sleep it should just take a second or two to come back on (and the power light and hinge lights will pulsate while the computer is sleeping)

exactly. so why is my computer hibernating instead of sleeping? when i go to start->sleep it is going into hibernation...

 

Also, if i'm doing a clean install of windows-can i use the windows disc that came with my laptop or do i have to find another copy of it that didnt come from dell?

 

Check your power settings in advanced. Hibernate will take effect after it has been asleep for a specific period of time and you can use the Disc that came with the laptop.

You can also turn Hibernate off at the command line:

Click Start>Run and type CMD then enter

powercfg.exe /hibernate off

or

powercfg.exe /hibernate on - To Re-enable

 

ok so i reinstalled a clean windows..but now none of the touch buttons work (like the eject button for the DVD) how do i go about reenabling all of that?

wow awesome link, got the quickset drivers and it worked...question though..for the bluetooth driver it asked me to "activate the bluetooth switch to complete installation" and there is no bluetooth switch....


also are those intel chipset drivers applicable to the core i7 720qm thats in my lappy right now?

 

The blutooth switch is up to the left of all the other quickset buttons. Looks like a radio tower.

Intel Chipset drivers should be one of the first things you install. I went to the intel site to make sure I got the latest. They worked for my 1645 lappy and I just rebuilt last week. CPU doesn't matter. It's the same motherboard.

 

ok so i partly figured out the sleep/hibernating thing..

however when i use FN+the sleep symbol on my keyboard the computer goes to hibernate..how do i change this so that it goes to sleep instead?

 

I don't know. Mine just did the same thing, but I just use power button for sleep, so I never noticed lol.

 

ahhh i see, but this button is turning off wireless internet too, is it supposed to be a combined button?

As I edited above, just noticed mine does the same thing. Never tried it cause I use power button for sleep and start menu for hibernate, so I'm not sure.

 

ahh yeah lol i guess ill just use the pwer button for this from now on.

thanks for all of your help, i dled and installed all of the drivers now so i think im up to date with everything except the bluetooth...for some reason i dont think its working because when it asked me to push the bluetooth button to activate it, it wouldnt pick it up so i had to cancel the installation

 

oh and also one last question...is there a way to check that turbo boost up to 2.8ghz is enabled?

or is it just automatically enabled regardless of software and drivers?

 

Search for Intel Turbo Boost Monitor. It's a desktop gadget that will show you when it's working. There are other tools, but I have not tried or remember them.

 

i hardly every see it go very high. 2.4 is about the highest.

My overall review of this laptop is that its great. The look is attractive and the system feels powerful. My only worry is that somehow its not optimized. Like what if all the drivers in the world aren't enough to squeeze out all of the power crammed into this computer. But I supposed thats a feeling that is unique to me. As far as throttling and what not, i dled crysis single player demo and was playing it for about 2-3 hours straight on high settings and i only noticed slow downs during scenes when alot was happening. The slow down seemed to be related to the fact that i was running the game on settings a little too high for the gpu, as opposed to the gpu throttling problem. So as far as I'm concerned, if there is a gpu throttling problem then i wouldnt have known about it aside from reading about it on the forums. The laptop runs great. The keyboard feels great and i dont find it skipping letters that i feel ive typed.

My only minor complaint is that the 9 cell battery makes a weird creaking noise if i push on my laptop, but i suppose that normal.

 

Highest i have recorded is 2703 MHz, with everest, 130w AC adapter, while playing left 4 dead (1).
