Ha - maybe someone can go expense an iGo adapter for work and try it. I would but I don't have my laptop yet. Actually I have the iGo adapter but not the laptop...

i'd appreciate if someone with 1080p rgb-led can test some lower resolution (for example 1280x720) and tell me if the screen remains sharp enough...

    @ogrec

I mean, it looks fine. It looks as good/bad as any screen does when it's not running at its native resolution. Things do seem a bit blurry compared to 1080p, though. No stretching as it is still 16:9. Things don't seem as crisp.

Why would you even want to run it at a lower res? If text is too small, then up the DPI, no reason to run it other than native res.

Yeah I did a clean install of Windows 7 and the DPI was set to 120 by default. DPI scaling actually works pretty good now adays with a number of apps, I just wish it was per monitor and not everything at once.

    Hi,

I ordered a sxps 1645 on november 13th with those specs for 1400$ CAD without taxes :

    1 224-7375 Studio XPS 16 Notebook
    1 312-0950 9-cell Battery
    1 313-8545 HD AUDIO 2.0 with SRS
    1 313-8874 8X DVD+/-RW SLOT DRV, XPS1640
    1 317-2361 Intel CoreTM i7-720QM (1.6-2.8GHz 6M/8)
    1 317-2364 4GB,DDR3,1333MHZ,2 DIMM
    1 320-8331 15.6 945p HD+ WLED LCD, W/2.0 MP
    1 320-8350 ATI Mobility RADEON HD 4670 1GB
1 320-8351 Obsidian Black High Gloss Finish
    1 341-8989 500GB HARD DRIVE,7200RPM,M1640
    1 430-0737 INTEL WIFI LINK 5300 802.11AGN

Reading this thread, I see that this laptop has some power management problem (either software or hardware) and some minor heat issue. I was expecting premium quality laptop right out of the box for a 1400$ laptop. I have a EDD of 14th December, but with all the order being delayed (is the problem resolved yet??) I'm thinking of maybe canceling my order.

I can get a lenovo Y550 tommorrow morning at my local computer store for 1300$. It got those specs :

    Intel® Core™i7-720QM (4 Cores,6M Cache,1.60 GHz up to 2.8 w/turbo
    RAM type: Dual-channel PC3-8500 1066MHz 4GB(no empty slot,max.8GB capacity)
Viewable image size (diagonal): 15.6" 16:9 LED WXGA (1366x768) Glossy
    Hard disk controller: 320GB (5400RPM)/SATA 3.0Gb/s, 9.5mm high
    Graphics chipset: NVIDIA GeForce GT240M 1GB, HDCP-compliant
    Media interface type: DVD+-RW,dual-layer support,fixed,slot-in
Audio: HD Audio,Dolby Home Theatre w/2 stereo speakers & 1 subwoofer.
    Array microphone. Webcam: 1.3MP
Wireless Standard: Intel 802.11a/b/g/n, Mini PCIe adapter
Battery type: 6 Cell - up to 3.5 hrs
    Expansion ports: 6-in-1 Multi-card Reader, 3xUSB 2.0, 3x mini PCIe Slot,
    1 eSATA/USB combo port,VGA DB-15,HDMI,ethernet,CIR,
    microphone input jack,headphone jack,ExpressCard/34 slot.

I know the lenovo laptop has poorer specs but i also know that lenovo makes premium quality laptops. I've had a dell inspiron 1501 for 2 years and a half, it was ok for the price but thats all, so I'm still confused on Dell laptop quality. Many of my colleagues own lenovo laptops and had no problems with them at all. They are also really well built. I was hoping to get the same build quality with a ''premium'' dell laptop. I was really looking forward to that laptop and I hope you guys will say that i made a good purchase and that studio xps has a wonderful build quality (as good or better than lenovo) and a good heat/power management. I also hope that the delayed order problem have been resolved.

I'm looking forward to your feedback.
Thank you for reading my post and for your help.

I found out Windows 7 can rate the performance of my new Dell laptop.

I am curious to see how my new Dell 1557 Studio stacks up against the Studio XPS 16 because it is configured nearly identical to the base XPS 16 except for the graphics card. My Studio 1557 has the new i7 processor, 4GB DDR3 RAM and the 512MB3 ATI Mobility Radeon HD 4570

Here is where I found the performance rating of my computer (I am using Windows 7):

Start Menu \ Control Panel \ Review your computer's status (under Security and System) \ View performance information (on the left hand side of the screen). I get the following performance info:

    Processor: 7.0
    Memory (RAM): 7.4
    Graphics: 4.9
    Gaming graphics: 6.2
    Primary hard disk: 5.9

I am especially curious to see if the XPS 16 w/ the ATI Mobility RADEON HD 4670 – 1GB fares any better in the Graphics ratings. Please note there are two Graphics ratings, one for Graphics (the Windows Aero rating) and one for Gaming graphics.

    Thank you.

max420: wow, those are pretty good scores.
    with my 1640 i get:
    6.0 cpu
    6.0 ram
    6.7 gpu 2d
    6.7 gpu 3d
    5.9 hdd

mostly i'm wondering about your RAM and hdd score: is 1333 MHz so much better than 1066? also, do u have an SSD drive?

The big RAM score difference is because of the Core i7 and mostly because Intel got rid of the front side bus and built the memory controller into the processor. The maximum memory bandwidth went from 10 GB/sec to 32 GB/sec. If you have 1066mhz memory on a Core 2 Duo system, it's not actually able to operate at its full-speed because of the bus limitation.

So after a couple days with my xps16 I really like it. Build quality is good and the finish on it is nice. Lots of fingerprints but that doesn't matter to me.

I'm able to run L4D2 @ near-max settings 1920x1080, only having to turn the AA and AF down a bit from max to get liquid FPS.

World of Warcraft @ 1920x1080 I have fully maxed out at 40-140fps depending on where I'm at (dalaran, etc)

The RGB screen really is impressive, but it gets even more impressive when you load one of the profiles that people have created in the other thread. I mean the just great. I have read comments that the black levels are not so great on this screen and I just don't agree. I think they are fantastic. Not the BEST I've ever seen, but they are still impressive.

The computer is snappy and responsive. Opening up various applications on the 500GB 7200RPM HDD is quick, and despite wanting an SSD I'm pleasently surprised by this drive's performance.

Heat is there during gaming. The bottom of the laptop gets warm, but not scalding if it has proper ventilation (helped by the 9 Cell battery). Browsing, watching video, music, and other low-GPU/CPU intensive tasks the laptop is luke-warm.

The "Potential Rating" i would give this laptop is a 9/10.

The current rating is a 7/10 due to the issue with slow downs during games on AC power. The potential rating is what it'll be when the correction is found.

Thanks for the post max420. Those are some serious specs. Your ATI Mobility RADEON HD 4670 – 1GB and the SSD drive are really flexing their muscle. Looks like I am really being held back by my 512MB3 ATI Mobility Radeon HD 4570 in the Graphics (Windows aero) performance score of only 4.9.

I'm curious if anyone knows how I could have a half way decent Gaming graphics score of 6.2, but a piddly Graphics (Windows aero) score of only 4.9. Does the Windows aero GUI use intensive graphics (more intensive than Gaming?) or is there something else going on here?

I still have a few days left where I could trade in my new Studio 1557 for a Studio XPS 16 and my WEI Graphics (Windows aero) score of only 4.9 is giving me pause for consideration. People I talked to told me a better Graphics card would be most helpful if I were a serious gamer, but now I'm wondering if it would also be very helpful during Windows 7 general purpose operations judging by my low Graphics (Windows aero) score.

    Thank you.

Can anyone tell me if the touchpad gets really hot like on my 1640?
I am hoping the rearranged internal chips will have resolved this issue.

I was interested too. It was shown earlier someone had screenshots of the internals. and they mentioned that the 1645 cpu heatsink extends over the southbridge, help cooling the touchpad issue. They mentioned it was still warm but i assume nothing bad. should be way earlier in this thread i believe

Thank you for your summary, i won't cancel my order. Also max420 says that a 130W adapter seems to resolve the power problem so everything seems fine.

Also does anyone know if i ordered my laptop on november 13th and the EDD is december 14th will it get delayed?

    Thanks for your help

I think that actually depends on quite a few factors from what I have been reading over in the delivery thread. I can tell you that my order was corrected on 11/10 and at that time I was given an EDD of 12/4. As of today mine is shipping with a delivery date of 12/1. I posted the details over in the order status thread.

I think they're finally getting orders through now: it shouldn't be delayed.

    intel core i7 720 QM
    4 GB DDR3 1333Mhz RAM
    500 GB 7200 RPM HDD
16" RGBLED 1080p Display with FR
    Intel wifi 5300

    Dell Bluetooth 370
    Soundblaster X-Fi Software Solution
9 Cell 85 Whr Primary Battery
90 Watts Adapter [Highest available in INDIA :( though after seeing the queries i wanted to buy a 130 W adapter, i asked the sales consultant he told me it wasnt available in INDIA]

EDD : 16th DECEMBER :) [quite early na?]

The Dell sales ppl told me that mine will be shipped from Malaysia. Is the build quality good in Malaysia??

i was waiting since a month for the studio 17 with core i7 as i wanted nothing less than 17 inch screen and top notch performance of core i7, but alas, its taking a lot of time to get to Market in INDIA, had to compromise on screen size, so cudn wait any longer and ordered the Studio XPS 16 today, but hey no regrets, its the screen resolution (1080p) that matters not screen size much though isnt it? (some might disagree). had some Questions regarding battery life and power & heat issues, but gone through the whole thread and got all the details i need.. THANKS ALL.. :) Great thread and a great site.. keep Going all of you.. you ppl ROCK.. :)

U wont regret it... 130w adapter is available in ebay india for 2700/-

Sorry to nitpick, but the 1645 is the i7 version. 1640 is the C2D model. Just so no one gets confused.

So, you can't order the X-Fi with the 1645 anymore, but still can with the 1640.

just did it, and got to the very last step in checkout, yet there was no notice of cashback. Am I just supposed to trust it to work? No confirmations until after purchase? I suppose I could always cancel it if I don't get a Bing email within a couple of days.

Stupid question - why not just get the Studio 17, it's got the i7 as well, the video card is *almost* as good, the screen is one and a half inches bigger, and it's cheaper while having a 3yr limited warranty included?

Some people seem to indicate the XPS 1645 can run a little hot say for example during heavy gaming. Just wondering, if I buy one and say it runs a little on the hot side for my liking can I underclock the video card to cool it down a little without causing system errors to occur. For example, here are some specs for the video card in the Studio 1557

    Core Speed * 680 MHz
    Shader Speed * 680 MHz
    Memory Speed * 800 MHz
    Memory Bus Width 64 Bit
AMD published a current consumtion of about 12-15 Watt

and here are some specs for the video card in the XPS 1645

    Core Speed * 675 MHz
    Shader Speed * 675 MHz
    Memory Speed * 800 MHz
    Memory Bus Width 128 Bit
    Current Consumption 35 Watt

Thus, would it be possible to reduce the power consumption on the XPS 1645 video card to that of the Studio 1557 video card so they both run at about the same temp and speed? Of course, with the XPS 1645 then one would be able to reset the video card back to its originally designed power consumption when speed was of the essence. Just curious, because then the XPS 1645 would be able to offer the best of both worlds for those concerned about any heat issues w/ the 1645.

That X-fi is software anyway... if you really wanted it, someone must sell it.
And that 6mb cache thing has got to be a misprint..no?

hey thank you, thanks a lot.. and by the way i ordered a 16" RGBLED screen.. just got confused while Typing!.

As for the price mine cost me about 75,000 because i ordered it through one of my cousin who works in dell and got dell employee discount for me.. (about 10-15%) :D , otherwise if you order by phone directly via dell sales you get the VAT charge discounted (about 2800 Rs) and if you order online through dell store no discounts but the cost is 1200 Rs less than by ordering Via Phone, i'm not sure Why.

Today i called dell people and they told Studio 17 with core i7 is available in INDIA but you have to order it from one of the (Selected) Dell retailers who can take the order... i asked for the contact no's and they gave some list of 20 ppl in Bangalore.. i called all of them but only 3 seem to know what core i7 is and reply that it isnt available yet. :( can you give me list and contact no's of Dell retailers in Kolkata?? pls? just to confirm that it isnt available in INDIA?

money is no option, i wanted a dell, and this was the best vid card at the time in a non alienware dell.

also, i love the leather accent, and XPS support.

    i820QM is 8MB

    i720QM is 6MB

dell didn't change the CPU cache, it is a mistake
