I thought it was like hard-wired into the BIOS chip, but after a reinstall, it stopped calling home.

hey thanks a lot... thank you! i'm a professional chess player and one of my reasons for opting core i7 was to harness the immense process for accurate chess analysis... and the mobility of a laptop to carry around in various tournaments and make sure a SUPER GRANDMASTER is always there by my side to help me out with analysis and preparation!! thats a really good benchmarking score for a laptop.. it even beats several mid to high range desktops!!

anybody with 720 QM can perform the same test and upload the screenshots?? (8,4,2, & 1 logical processors?) THANKS IN ADVANCE!! :) :D

Just ran it for you. I am gonna hop in a game with some friends so I only ran the 8 core, but the scores are so similar compared to the 820QM that I figured it should make you feel like you got an answer.

    Relative Speed: 12.47
    Kilo nodes per second: 5985

EDIT: Same exact specs as Max420, except i have the 500GB HDD and 720QM cpu.

I have the 720QM, interesting to see how it compares:
    8 CPU
    4 CPU
    2 CPU
    1 CPU

    Edit: Beaten

The test results for 8 CPU is similar because the test may not scale very well to 8 processors and there is some bottleneck I'm guessing.

    @ zlog
    @eblock12

THANK YOU... THANKS A LOT!! :)
Really Impressed with the scores... :D even my desktop with intel core2Quad Q6600 @ 2.53 Ghz does a fair 5050 score(running on all cores flat out), which i used till now to check my analysis and Games, but i guess its just the other components that make the difference like 4 GB 1333 MHz DDR3 Ram compared to the 4GB 800 Mhz DDR2 on my desktop!! THANKS A LOT... I THINK i did the right choice to go in for XPS 16 rather than wait for (i dono how long! ) STUDIO 17 with core i7... Cant wait to lay hands on this wonderful Desktop Replacement Beast!! :D

P.S: I think i did the right thing by ordering My machine with 720QM rather than spend additional 350$ (or Rs. 12,000) more for 820 QM as i only use the power of the CPU for chess analysis (results of both are almost similar) and Gaming & dont do anything else that requires more maxed out cpu!

    YIPEEEEEEE!! :D :p

    I think I rather spend those Extra Bucks for accessories Like wireless mouse/Keyboard set; laptop Stand; Portable HDD; Docking etc;
but there are professionals who need those extra cpu power for video editing and applications like maya; 3d animation; software development etc., so dell good job offering both versions!

and hey i heard that Alienware M15/17x was designed by the Dell Studio Xps team(hardware) and alienware team (design)?? that makes me more proud of my Laptop!! :)) :D :p )

just one hitch.. i wanted my SXPS 16 in Alpine white but sadly Dell India offers only Obsidian Black for SXPS 1645 (with core i7) and they offer all the three premium colours for the 1640 model.. i dono why.. becoz if you are purchasing higher config lappy then you should get mor options no??(which i beleive)

otherwise everythings more than PERFECT!! :D

go to bing.com, search for "dell", click on the "bing cashback" link, follow the quick instructions to sign up, and you'll get kicked over to Dell.com.

make your purchase normally and checkout. You usually have about 30-60minutes to do this before the session runs out.

you won't see another Bing cashback reminder anywhere in the checkout process, so after you pay, if you haven't gotten a Bing email in a few days (check your spam folder too), call Dell or Microsoft Bing. If all else fails just cancel the order, since it usually takes some weeks to ship anyway.

Go to Bing's cashback site, and click on "cashback stores" on the left. Then search for "Dell Studio XPS 16." Along the right column of the resulting page, you will see a cashback offer for this lappie. It looks like an ad, but it is not. Click on the cashback part, then follow the directions.

This Anandtech article dogs on the Samsung 256 SSDs, specifically, performance after the drive is used for a while. I hope Dell is using the newest Samsung drives, as, according to Anandtech, the firmware on the drives is not currently user-upgradable.

(a friend of mine is in the US and he would bring me the laptop)

Could you please just post a link to bing site where there is this offer?

The one I got to using your instructions is this: http://www.bing.com/shopping/search?q=Dell+Studio+XPS+16&go=&form=QBRE&scope=cashback

Do you guys feel the extra money for the i7 was worth it over a C2D 1640. I'm strongly considering an XPS16 as a replacement for my fried Asus G1s.

I've never had a computer with more than two cores, so I'm wondering if I'll be more inclined to take advantage of the extra computing power because its there. Is it true that the 1645's cooling system is improved over the 1640 and that it runs cooler under light use? *I would be using a cooler for moderate-heavy use, of course.

Right now the complaints of random GPU downclocking during gaming is holding me back somewhat, but if it's just a power supply issue then I'm not too worried about it. Honestly, most of the games I play are older Source games, but I would expect them to run flawlessly on a machine with these specifications.

it depends upon your requirements.. i seem to think that you do not need the extra computing power of core i7 for your gaming... just go for c2duo (P9700) which should provide you with upto 4 hrs of battery life (high usage) and if you want to play more advance games in future (beleive me i was like you at one time but cudn stop myself from inclining towards modern games)or be future proof i strongly recommend Core i7!

about the heating issues, generally i beleive from all the reveiws i read from the web as well as some fantastic reviews here on notebbok review, 1645 is generally cooler on lighter loads(see temp graph in the same thread posted previously) and the gap generally declines as the usage increases but remains fairly below the 1640. (for conformation i shuld get my 1645 which is due on 16th December {Hopefully})

and about the GPU downclocking.. i think it might be a power issue and khaledsif and all have written it on dell forums and dell ppl should get through this problem fairly soon as its a premium notebook.

I'm also a gamer who plays older games replacing a burned out M1710 XPS, I ordered a 2.8 1640 but cancelled in favour of the I7 for a couple of reasons.

    1) It appears to run cooler from the tests I've seen here, and having had GPU failures in my last 2 gaming laptops this is a big plus imo (I'm going to use a Zalman NC-1500 with it so hopefully itll be a reasonably cool set up)
    2) The RAM speed and lack of Southbridge mean a speed gain regardless of the processor
    3) Getting the I7 720 which is the entry level means I will have a decent upgrade path for the processor if I want it in 18 months or so, getting the 2.8 leaves little ceiling.
    4) Games will come out in the future which make better use of the cores
    5) I'm a sucker for latest tech :D

Yeah, well that's a relief. Here I was thinking that Anand and Jesus were one and the same. After all, I have never seen them in the same place.

Yes, it's just a review, and it did not deter me. I ordered the 256 SSD. Just passing on info.

I came from a G2S-A1 and it was *definatly* worth the wait and trouble. this thing is FAST. It's definatly just an issue with the 90 watt adapter not being powerful enough. So if you order one make sure thye know the contingency for you placing an order is if they throw in the 130watt adapter, or give you enough money off so that you can buy one seperate.

    Then theres this:

YEah you cant have a totally future proof machine (Get an Alienware M17x or i think even that is outdated now the Core I7 mobile extreme edition cpu's (920XM) are here!! you cant have a totally future proof machine becoz every week or every month someone keeps coming up with a better hardware be it a GPU/RAM/CHIPSET/PROCESSOR/OTHER TECHS.. so if you think you will wait for the future proof machine i guess you'll end up waiting ;)... (my personal experience) i have waited since this JULY for a Quad core laptop.. it had arrived in sep in the form of intel core2 Quad powered machines (Q9000 and Q9100 series) but i read about intel core i7 technology and that it will be due soon so thought to wait.. now i see it has arrived and its a nice time to order one :D.. by future proof i meant relatively same configs with minor differences that really dont make a big difference :D ;)

Quad cores are doomed HEX cores are already here.

The world's fastest supercomputer is Cray XT5, also known as Jaguar. Jaguar bags the no. 1 spot, beating IBM's Roadrunner, who has been holding the top crown since past 18 months. Jaguar recently upgraded its quad-core CPUs to hex-core Opteron processors, which meant a 2.3 petaflop per second theoretical performance peak (”nearly a quarter of a million cores” ;), and 1.75 petaflops measured by the Linpack benchmark. This surpasses Roadrunner's 1.04 petaflop/s. A petaflop/s refers to 1 quadrillion calculations per second. Jaguar, located at the US Department of Energy's Oak Ridge Leadership Computing Facility, came close to beating Roadrunner in the two previous Top500 lists. This time, however, Roadrunner's performance fell from 1.105 petaflop/s in June due to a repartitioning of the system.

Is the service manual that ships with/on the 1645 the same as the 1640?
When you look for the docs for the 1645 on dell it now points to the 1640 page. (apposed to the empty page before).

    I guess nothing service-wise changed...replacing a mobo is still replacing a mobo.

Ok, i believe then, that url is what's important (i think that's how dell know it's through bing), so where does the link lead to? "www.Dell.com/StudioXPSBing" is probably wrong as it says: "The page you requested may no longer exist on Dell.com"

And, you can search for what you want to purchase: A lappy, desktop, accessory, or what not. You can search by Model Name, Dell Part Number.

And you proceed as you would normally do on Dell.com, add to cart...make your purchase. You will not see anything regarding Bing Cashback during your purchase or at checkout!

**** It may take up to 48 hours to get Bing Cashback Confirmation e-mail info direct from Bing. Dell has nothing to do with this. So contacting them regarding your Bing Cashback is effortless. If you do not hear anything back from Bing in say 48 hours, you can send an e-mail to Bing, and they are really good with followup! :)

Also, Dell has been extremely slow with their own e-mail confirmations, so be a bit patient with them also, on purchases! :)

    Hope that helps!

    Cin...

    Hi Guys,

I ordered SXPS 1645 earlier this month but just realized that my confirmation order Email and the Order status on the Dell's website have different items.

I ordered Full HD Widescreen 16.0 inch RGBLED LCD (1920x1080) W/2.0 MP and this is in my confirmation E-mail from dell

In the order status it is Premium FHD WLED Display, Obsidian Black, 2.0 MP Webcam. Item# 320-8335

To me these look like entirely different monitors. I would be really pissed if they actually changed my order.
I will try to give them a call tomorrow.

I would appreciate if you guys can confirm whether these are different monitors.

I just ordered the same thing today (the RGBLED) and it said FHD WLED in my order status as well. I just canceled an order I made yesterday with the 15.6 1080p monitor and in my order status it listed it as "15.6 inch Wide Screen 16:9 1080p Full HD WLED LCD, W/2.0 MP, XPS 1645"

So I think we are ok.

"Premium WLED" is the same as RGBLED. I confirmed with rep last week.

Ok, Take a look at the screenshot below. There are 3 choices, obviously, and one of them is FHD WLED which is about $175 cheaper and lower quality. 60
-70% gamut etc. Main concern here is that I may end up with this one. My experience with Dell Reps is not great. Is there way to distinguish these two displays apart from their small size difference

Once again, I ordered Full HD Widescreen 16.0 inch RGBLED LCD (1920x1080) W/2.0 MP and this is in my confirmation E-mail from dell

In the order status it is Premium FHD WLED Display, Obsidian Black, 2.0 MP Webcam. I tem# 320-8335

while we're on the bing issue, does the cashback occur before or after tax? And also, i know the conditions say that it's only applicable for home and small business, any chance i can save the cart then call an epp rep and still have the 20% cashback applied?
