I have the 1645 with bluray burner and I haven't burned anything yet but I heard that it uses RipLock whick throttles down the speed to 2x or similar to make it quieter. I'm not 100% sure about this so someone else can clarify but I think this is true. Also, I'm not sure whether this applies only to bluray burning or all burning.

I am still having the same problem as you it seems. Random freezes with no apparent relation. It really sux because I cant ctrl-alt-delete out if it (I have to unplug and yank the battery). I'm in school and working on important projects so this really is unacceptable because I basically live in fear of loosing my work.

Between having the display fail and these freezes I'm really disapointed by this system. Were you able to find a solution?

i tried to call dell this morning to try and get a slim brick sent out, but their systems were down, the guy at dell reception said to try back 1 hour.

my main point is the 1645 ships with a slim brick, so i should get a slim brick to replace it. i may end up having to buy it though. if i can get anyone on the phone ot confirm they have one. sigh.

i wonder if im going to buy one, if i shold just buy a 150 or 210, can anyone confirm they are slim?

I haven't checked the keys for these, but if I went to install one of the disks Dell sent, I'm assuming it uses the same key that is already installed? Like I can't use it on another comp? Not that I need it as it seems that I now have 4 copies of Windows 7...

Hey guys. I've been a lurker for quite some time, debating what laptop to buy. I eventually settled on the the XPS 1645. Received it today and I'm loving it so far. :D

I only have one problem that I've been trying to get resolved but just can't seem to find a fix.

I have my laptop connected via HDMI to my receiver, which displays the image to the HDTV and plays sound through the surround sound system. The issue I'm having is when I set the display mode to "Projector only", sound reverts back to the laptop while the image is displayed on the TV. On every other mode (Duplicate, Extend, etc.), sound plays through the surround sound.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

It's weird that it does that. Have you tried looking at the sound options in the taskbar? Right-click on the speaker icon in the system tray and choose 'playback devices.' If you don't see the HDMI connection listed, right click on an empty space in the window and check 'show disabled devices.' If it's listed there, right click it and make sure that 'Enabled' is checked. You may want to also disable the laptop speaker as well if you want the sound to only come from wherever you have the HDMI cable connected to.

As an alternative to disabling the laptop speaker, you can click on the speaker icon, select 'Mixer', mute the laptop speaker and set the volume for the HDMI connection. Both of those probably won't be listed at the same time; you'll have to switch between them.

what exactly is the issue? since HDMI carries audio and video, it makes sense to me that a mode called "projector only" would only send video over the HDMI, assuming you wanted to use a different output for audio.

when you duplicate it, windows si enabling both sound devices, it may be possible that when you choose projector only, you have to go into your sound options in you volume tray icon, and choose your default sound device as the HDMI.

    try playing around here:

So I wiped my system and installed Windows 7 Ultimate. In addition to the base installation, I installed the Touchpad, Bluetooth and ATI drivers from Dell's website.

I've got a few questions though...

    - My Devices and Printers section lists an issue with two missing " Base System Device" drivers. I'm guessing this is referring to components not being recognized, but the description isn't exactly helpful. Has anyone who did a fresh install run into this and figured out which drivers were missing?

    - Was it a good idea to install the ATI driver from Dell's site? Is there a better driver available?

    - When I first booted the system with Windows 7 Home Premium, there weren't any icons on the desktop. Instead there was a centered toolbar at the top of the screen. What toolbar was that?

    Thanks for your help folks!

    - Don't know about the unrecognized compenents
    - AFAIK the beta driver from ATI performs better than Dell's driver.
    - For the toolbar I guess it was the Dell Dock. You can find the software on Dell's website or on the drivers + software CD they shipped with the laptop.

The sound option for HDMI is labeled as not plugged in so I can not make any changes to it. I see no reason for projector mode to suddenly not transfer audio or not even give me an option to do so.

The two unrecognized devices are listed as being at location:

    PCI bus 11, device 0, function 1
    PCI bus 11, device 0, function 2

Would someone mind looking at their Devices and Printers dialog and see which Device Functions are listed for those locations?

So i ordered this system today. It was on sale at dell.ca for 1299.99. I watching the xps 16 i7s for a while and jumped on this today. :)

Only problem is that it has a estimated ship date of 12/25. Christmas day! yea right! Why would it take so long for them to ship this out? What time do you think i can expect this awesome laptop to get here guys? I live in Ontario Canada btw.

Yeah I reinstalled and have the same missing devices, everything is accounted for so I'm not sure what they could be. It's probably nothing important.

Edit: It's the Ricoh card reader from the device ID, even though the reader already works. Dell has the driver listed for the 1640 but not the 1645.

OK, I suppose its worth a shot. I gues I'm just incredulous that Dell's own drivers wouldn't work and that I'd have to basically hack my brand new system just to make it work. If its dell's own video driver thats the problem I would expect more people to have this problem. Is anyone else running the mobility modded ATI driver?

Installed all the drivers maualy outside of dell, found several of them out-of-date. currently installing my games.. COD MW2, Borderlands, Dragon Age...

Currently have the system powered with a 130W adaptor... if anyone wants any tests done just let me know.

been on hold and my phone just died waiting to get with someone from support to send me my Creative software.... gota get them to send me a personal 130w adaptor for the system since they are still shipping it with 90w adaptors.

Just recieved my laptop today, have to say power issues aside very impressed. Not only the look and feel but the pure speed. I do a lot of numerical/dynamic analysis for my masters, so getting unglued from a desktop is a godsend.

I did all the benchmarks etc like others did and turned up the same as everyone elses no surprise. I did do a little benchmark in the computation stuff i do, and turns out the laptop is faster in a lot of cases then my desktop C2D E8400 @ 3.5ghz. When multiplying and subtracting 10000000 numbers that range b/w 0-1, the 1645 was able to do it in .083 seconds consistently, while the desktop C2D could best pull off a .104. This is single core stuff mind you. I re-ran some real world computations and turns out the 1645 was sometimes better and sometimes just a little worse then the desktop. Very pleased as this will work out perfectly. Solidworks etc works flawlessly as well, and very fast.

Just thought id share to those interested about the i7 and its uses :)

You can get it at MY Dell Downloads at:

    http://downloadstore.dell.com/media

You can also get other software from there as well, you should burn what ever you need to a CD as they only allow you to download each product 3 times.

Just FYI if you install the Dell face recognition software and start crashing anytime you get a Windows authentication dialog (such as in Outlook), then the fix is to uninstall it.
