**The Official Studio XPS 1645 Intel Core i7 "Owners Lounge"

I'm confused about the video driver.

On the Dell Drivers page for the SXPS-1645, Windows 7 64-bit, it lists the only available video driver as version 8.634.0.0000, A11 (2009-09-23) (R234359).

As received, my computer has the following driver installed: 8.650.0.0000 (2009-08-13) (R240537), which would seem to be a later driver, based on version number and file number, not the date.

 

Dumb question, but even in Canada (toronto)? I have the Complete Care + Accidental Damage 3-Year Warranty, this includes the technician to come to my house?

I'm really hoping I don't have to send in my laptop to get the screen changed.

 

Hi, just wanted to provide a delivery update.

I ordered my XPS-16 on Nov. 11. It had an original delivery date of 12/8. A week ago the delivery date was updated to 1/4. However, it just got delivered today (12/10). So maybe there is hope that delayed orders will be sent out earlier than advertised.

As soon as I can unbox it I am sure I'll be posting with all my issues / questions.

 

Correct, they will dispatch a technician to come to your home, unless something has changed that I am unaware of.

 

i have like 30 dead pixels on the left bottom, but dell is actually replacing my laptop again to fix it, this is on the rgb screen. no detectable light leakage though...

those are bother old versions. what you should do, is download the desktop ATI driver and Catalyst Control Center (CCC) and follw the directions here to make them compatinle with the laptop chip.

yes he will. my keyboard has been acting up a bit, with the 67yuhjnm keys not working sometimes. now they have died for good,so i called dell, told them these machines are f**ked, i already sent an old lap back to them, and had to get a 130W cord if i have to send it back again, i dont want it back, im going to reverse the charges and get an Envy. he talked with a supervisor, and told me; this will not affect my warranty, i only have return to depot, but this time only, they will send a tech to my house to change my keyboard. they also said if i had complete care on site service, he would come to my house to fix any problem short of a whole new laptop.

Everyone using it has any main problem so far and how you like it. Do you think the heat is still a problem how about the adapter problem?

 

After 2 months of waiting, I finally got my 1645 today! I just want to double check that I have the RGB instead of the WLED. How can i tell?

1. Open your Device Manager
2. Click on Monitor
3. Now a properties window should open, click on Details Tab
4. There will be a drop down list here, open it
5. Now click on Hardware IDS, it should say: MONITOR\SEC5448.

Not sure what MS_0000 is, you should check with DELL unless somebody else can confirm what screen type MS_0000 actually is.

 

I don't know how everyone is getting their order quicker than expected. I ordered on 11/29 and my EDD is still 12/22. I also got the Bing cashback.

Total price including tax = $2358.34 minus the Bing 20% cashback of $444.92 gave me a total price of $1913.42. I'm pretty happy considering I had originally ordered in October but was stuck in the crazy delays so I canceled. First order price for the same config was around $2600.

Thank you Microsoft and Dell delays. Please delay it another 30 days as well so I can cancel the order and keep the cashback from Bing.

 

Mine says MS_0000 as well. Perhaps it's because i did a clean install?

On another note, does anyone know if the hotkeys are able to control itunes?

 

I have done a clean install also and I have the SEC5448, so I still not sure what that MS_0000 is.

 

That's probably why. If someone can post up the RGBLED drivers, that'd be nice.

It might also be because you don't have quickset (or another dell util) installed.

It's called "Generic PnP" because it uses the default Windows drivers, so there aren't any custom RGB drivers.

Received my machine today. So far not bad. I've had two system freezes - once the first time I tried to launch Itunes 9 (although it worked on subsequent tries) and once when I was trying to uninstall windows live update service.

One thing I've noticed is that I ordered the creative soundblaster x-fi with my machine, but it does not seem to be on my machine. When I check the sound card in the device manager it shows:

ATI High Definition Audio Device
BLuetooth Hands-free Audio
IDT High Definition Audio CODEC

No mention of creative soundblaster anywhere. I also noticed on Dell website this is no longer offered as a customizable option. Anyone know what's going on?

 

At the very least there's an INF file telling the computer the SEC5448 bit.

 

"X-Fi MB" is just software they install on your machine that emulates some of the features of an X-Fi card, the hardware is unchanged so of course there is no device for it in device manager.

 

For the settings, ect of the XF-MB go to- start/all programs/Creative/sound blaster X-Fi mb/audio control panel.

 

I'm interested in what bios you system shipped with. A bunch of us have had system freeze problems. One of the main reasons I returned my laptop was because of the random freezes, but soon after I returned it, Dell came out with the A03 bios. I'd be interested if A03 solves the problem.

First thing I did when I got this computer was flash the A03 bios. Two freezes: Launching Itunes and trying to uninstall Windows Live Sync. Both actions worked after powering down the laptop, restarting, and trying again.

 

This seems a lot more like a Win7 compatibility issue than anything with the laptop hardware.

 

Just ordered my studio xps 16 on Monday with the i7 that has the 3.06ghz turboboost, and by Tuesday morning it was listed as "in production" on my dell account. I'm hoping I'll have it by the new year... Anyway, has anyone had any cooling problems what with there only being one fan? I'll be using it mostly for web browsing and occasional video editing, with some gaming too... Nothing too heavy (I'm not a hardcore gamer), but will I need a cooling mat to play Halo 2 or Portal/Half-Life 2 for very long?

 

I just want to say that I'm finally posting in this thread as a "owner."

This thing is sweet. First thing I did was update the BIOS (I see we're not prettying up the BIOS anymore, it's straight up pheonix-style). I then reloaded and called Dell about getting my X-Fi MB disc (I didn't get the disc, but got two Win7 discs instead).

This is a sexy machine, and I can't wait to do more testing tomorrow. For now, I'll have WoW patching and Steam downloading overnight

I just got mine today as well.
I have to say I am not very impressed. The RGBLed screen has good color, but not white.

The 2D performance seems pretty bad. There's screen tearing when I scroll normal webpage and play video at same time.

Dirt 2 demon isn't playable. Very slow during map selection. Completely clipped audio.

Buildin mic has no echo cancellation.

I think that it should work because all hardware is on the supportlist.

 

I have had my 1645 for 1 month now and use it every day and my computer did not freeze at all, so even before the bios update came out the computer did not freeze as well, sorry to here that you had this issue.

Note: However I did reformat my HDD and did not replace the dell software and got rid of some of the other programs they provided and used my own.

 

I seem to have the same issue 2 WIN7 dvds but no creative XM dvd. how did you manage to get the dvd sent? who did u talk to ?

 

I believe we all got 2 windows 7 DVD'S. As for the Creative Disk, you will need to contact tech support and they will send one out to you.

At the end of the call, I was actually offered some of their support contracts. I didn't know they tried to sell you stuff over the online chat. To his credit, he did ask me before-hand. And I plan on extending to the 3-year warranty anyway. It's nice they'll let me add that after the purchase.

That part number is not available on DELL website. you sure this number is correct ?

 

I have this for the sound blaster software, Item Number = 313-8546, see if you can find it with that #.

There were issues with this product that why they might have pulled it. It was actually made for windows vista and people were complaining that they could not reinstall it. It must be installed under Vista 64 compatibility.

darthmertz - i play lots of games on mine, and i definietly wouldnt put it on my lap without a magazine or a hard-back book between the PC and you.

it still gets pretty hot.

I also think that MaX420 has an upload link to download the software on here somewhere, but you will need to call Creative or dell for a product key.

 

If by some chance you are not able to get it, Dell has to give you credit towards something else like a Flash Drive or something to make up for the 25.00.

I personally don't think that that software makes a big difference anyway, the sound it comes with is pretty good. So don't worry to much, just enjoy your new computer.

 

FYI you will also need this link for the other software that they don't put on a CD, like: (You have to burn it) as they only allow you to download 3times each.
