Here is the link Max420 has posted, that was really nice of him and you will still need the Key to gain access.

    http://www.megaupload.com/?d=QG7J9YH0

Note: You will either need to contact Dell or Creative support to obtain the key as long as you have purchased the software.

Actually, the issue with syncing iphones is an issue with Apple, not the 1645. There seems to be a bug in the 64 bit version of Itunes 9 that alot of people have complained about (not just Dell owners).

You can find alot of info about this online, here is one article: http://www.digitaltrends.com/mobile/itunes-9-on-64-bit-windows-7-has-issues-with-iphone/

One would think Apple will fix this problem, although I'm sure they are not rushing to get it done.

Anyone try the multimedia keys in iTunes yet? Seems to work only for me if I have iTunes as the current selected window (Fwd, Back, stop, pause/play). This is a Quickset function isn't it?

I have an IPhone 3GS and Win 7 64 bit on my XPS1640 and have never had any sync problems so it's not a universal issue.

It seems to be a problem specific to the PM55 Express Chipset. Apparently a BIOS update is needed.

I think what your referring to is a part of the battery. If you want it to lie flat you'll need to buy a 6 cell battery or just remove the battery entirely (run it on AC)

That's extremely subjective based on the needs of the person and the amount of discretionary income available. Are you looking for a workhorse, portability, general usage, battery life?

Overall, if you can get the 20% Bing cashback, it's a good deal. The SSD price is good as well. If you need to be on the cutting edge of technology, then you have to be willing to deal with hiccups once in a while like the throttling issue. (That goes for everybody else as well)

Thanks for quick response. I am S/w Dev and not so hardcore gamer.I like to play NFS (all time fav) and wish to play flight simulator games, less of FPS. I also like to watch movies/listen to songs...not to mention web surfing and all...I liked this machine very much and don't wish to change is for atleast 3 - 4 years to come (atleast that's what my intentions are right now), so I wanted a high end system. Yes I need to travel for business, but weight is not a problem from the reviews I read. Battery life does matter. I just hope it clicks for me :)

Another strange thing about my machine - whenever I double click an executable file (installing setup files for skype, gtalk, etc) my screen flashes black for a second then comes back. It's a pretty quick flash but happens consistently when executing setup files. Anyone else see anything like this?

There's a hardware problem with the PM55 Express chipset. Dell needs to update the bios apparently. It's not just Dell, any new i7 with this chipset with windows7 64 bit.

Apparently, Asus, Gigabyte, etc already have firmware updates out to fix the issue, but Dell and HP don't. I already talked to Dell. They were not aware of the issue, so I gave them a bunch of links to help them along. I doubt it'll do anything, but what the hell. I'm on with Apple right now to see if there is a workaround, but that's not gonna go anywhere either.

Nope! No fix at the moment until Dell gives us a newer firmware. Just talked to Apple, the drone never heard of the problem, but I made her google it and she got a senior tech. He knew about it and had me do some diagnostics and email it to him. Hopefully it helps them out.

Hmm..let me see if I can find the *.inf file and we can compare.

Huh, someone with two Win7 discs probably has mine, because my upgrade doesn't work, LOL.

What?! I asked them because my XPS 1640 had Local Backup, but my 1645 didn't. Damnation!

    EDIT:

LOL....I think it has to do with Windows. I opened Device Manager and I saw MS_0000 under the driver ID while I had SEC_5448 earlier, LOL. Try restarting, that should fix it, maybe?

Thanks. I think that may have been the issue. I was on the default setting of "Notify me only when programs try to make changes to my computer" - I've switched down to the next lower option which includes "do not dim my desktop". I'll see how that goes next time I do an install.

my only gripe is the screen so far. the gpu is a bit weak but it does pretty well, good enough to overlook its shortcomings imho. i just got some dead pixels, no big deal. i have come to expect problems with dell machines, and the problems i have experienced with the 1645 are marginal. slight throttling while playing borderlands but not enough to cry about because i dont play much anymore... the rgb screen is pretty awesome. i love almost everything about it to tell the truth. it isnt a gaming rig, but it imitates one quite well, and it is way lighter than the m1730!!!! which i appreciate more and more now days

    QUESTIONS

I will want to de-crapify un-install the bloatware and trialware. What have you found to be the best method?:

    • wipe drive and do clean install of Win7? I so, does Dell provide a Win7 install disk to enable this clean install?
    • or, setup Laptop normally as Dell intended, then go about uninstalling bloatware and trialware?
    • or, some other method?
If you used option 1, were you able to obtain Win7 install CD and all required drivers and apps from Dell, or did you need to hunt on third-party sites for drivers and apps?

As I will be a newbie Canadian owner, I'd sure appreciate guidance from those experts here who have already done this. Winchill here in Toronto today is -21 degrees below zero. That is really cold, so if you have working techniques to recommend to me, they can help to keep me in a warm apartment working on reinstalling or streamlining my new 1645 once it arrives. That will be warmer than having to go outside to shovel, or get food, or build snowmen. Keep me warm inside: tell me now to prepare my new laptop.

Also, is it beneficial to first partition the internal HD? I wondered about a smaller 25GB partition on which to install Windows 7, and massively larger partition for My Documents & Settings and all user data and Programs. Does this make sense, and what is best strategy?

    Thanks for advice and anecdotes.

Contact lojack's support. You can find it on their website. Tell them you bought a Dell computer, ordered lojack but it isn't installed and you don't have a disk. They'll ask for your Dell order number. After it is confirmed, they'll walk you through downloading, installing and registering your lojack. Takes only 5 minutes or so.

If it is already installed, then you just have to make sure you register. After that you can login and check the status.

Where're you from? 12 degrees in Iowa... it was negative a couple days ago though.

I'm also wondering about the best way to get rid of Dell bloatware... I ordered on 12/07 and my E.D.D. is 01/09, but I'm hoping it'll be a bit sooner than that. I ordered Halo 2 and a bluetooth mouse, which came yesterday and the day before, even though their E.D.D. wasn't until the 16th or 17th. We even had a freaking blizzard, and they got it shipped a week early - I hope this happens with the SXPS1645, but I'm not going to get my hopes up too high since I've heard about so many people's order delay problems.

For all you current and future owners who ordered their dells with the Bing 20% off deal, come take a look at how we all got played. Sorry for adding more stress to our current issues of throttling, MB's, bios's and adapters, but the truth must be told.

Not having a synch issue at all. Runnin 7 Pro x64, iTunes x64 and Office 2010 with a 3 GS and everything synchs fine. One caveat to this, since 2010 is the first version of Office to be available as a x64 download also, Apple has yet to write an x64 version of their iTunes add-in for Outlook, so if you have Outlook 2010 x64 installed, iTunes won't see Outlook . The quick fix for this specific scenario is to just run Office 2010 x86 which Apple does have the add-in written for. ;)

I have an XPS 1645 and can't figure out how to broadcast with my soundcard to a wireless receiver. I am not sure if that is possible though. Does anyone has any experience with that issue?
