I've never heard of this being done, other than with add-on products. It seems like it should be possible, that some application could be written that would take sound card output and stread it via onboard WiFi, such as the way a USB-connected FM transmitter can do. However, I've never heard of any such application that can do this.

I suggest you spend some time Googling and perhaps asking in some media centre forums. Please let us know if you find such a solution.

Tell them you want to cancel the order so you can re-place it with better parts.

In my experiance I wouldn't worry, they are almost certain to delay the order and after they do that, they have to accept a request to cancel the order!

Why do they have to accept a request to cancel? Is there anything in their terms of sale that permit a customer to cancel an order just because it is delayed? If not, then it would be at Dell's discretion whether they allow cancellations or not.

There is an application that does this.....oh my gosh, what is it's name?!?!

Give me 10 minutes and I will check my email. FUDGE...what is it called???

    EDIT: Found it,

    Jamcast

I've used it with my XBOX 360 and it works BEAUTIFULLY. Slight sound lag, but that's to be expected.

Interesting. Thanks for the recommendation. Now I need to see if anyone sells a small device that could receive the WiFi signal or Ethernet cable and has RCA outputs to connect to my conventional home stereo.

Currently I play music from my laptop to home stereo with a hard-wired cable: from laptop's headphone/speaker output to standard RCA inputs on back of home stereo. A little WiFi or network receiving that turns the signal into analog and outputs to RCA would be perfect, if it exists.

    Hi

This is my first post and I was hoping for some help/advice.

I am looking to do the following -
Surfing, downloading music, films, gaming, microsoft office work, online poker and some photo editing.

Do you think I should get -
1645 - am concerned over throttling issues, do I really need an i7 processor?
1640 - concerned about heat issues, will core duo be better for my needs

Or do you think both these models are overkill for my needs and I should get something like a Studio 15?

If anyone could spare some time to give me advice I'd appreciate it.

Thanks for the information. I had updated to this latest version (10.0.42.34) when it was released a few days ago but it didn't help. I haven't tried their beta version.

Those are not high-intensity tasks. Any reasonable modern PC will do a good job on those.

I think you are unduly worried about heat. These models have been out for a while, so if they were failing from heat we'd hear about it.

Both models are overkill for your stated use. You would not notice much difference in performance from the higher-end processors and bus. A Studio 15 would, in all likelihood, make you equally happy for less money. And, since you are concerned about heat and "over throttling" (whatever that means to you) then you won't have those issues to worry about with a Studio 15.

I have to bring this back into this forum. Is anyone having a freezing issue or has anyone successfully fixed it? There are numerous people who have this issue. The computer will randomly freeze leaving the last display, cursor frozen, and keyboard unresponsive. Contol-Alt-Delete does not work. A hard reset by pressing the power button is the only way to remedy the problem. I recently exchanged my XPS 1645 for a new one due to this issue and the second also has the same problem. Any input would be greatly appreciated as Dell tech support said this issue has not been reported.

I have noticed this after a few minutes of watching southpark episodes at southparkstudios.com at full screen.

the cursor freezes etc, and screen seems to go blank sometimes. Although i noticed the cursor will move if you wait about a minute after moving it. only way to get it to work again is to hit the power button making it sleep and bring it back.

Yes, this is what many of us are seeing. The system runs so extremely slowly that the screen barely refreshes. If you have the clock gadget on the desktop with the second hand showing, you'll see it tick-tocking very very slowly when the PC is in this condition.

Well I have not have had any issues with that at all and I have been using it for 1 month now.

The only major thing that I have done to the 1645 is Reformat the Hard Drive. I also did not put back any of the Dell Programs/Software that they supplied. Update your drivers and Bios at Dells Website.

Do you have any DLNA devices? Some newer media STB are DLNA-enabled.

I mention because that's the technology Jamcast uses.

    ~Ibrahim~

    EDIT:

Has anyone ever experienced the brightness controls just shutting down? Like, the keyboard ones don't work or the ones in Windows. I think the colors change a bit, but no brightness change....

Well the brightness of my screen cannot be changed. Everything was fine one day. (I was able to increase/decrease the brightness through the keyboard shortcuts and in the settings.) Then the next day, the brightness was all the way up and could not be decreased through any settings. Tried reinstalling the BIOS and any other drivers I could think of. Dell is sending someone out to replace the screen.

Cant tell you how much it hurts your eyes to have the brightness on an RGB screen all the way up all the time.

I freeze quite often.. seems to be a video driver issue most likely.. its completely random.. its discussed more on the link below.. it also seems most common with people who have 6gb of ram..

Is this a common issue among SXPS1645 owners, or just a small minority? I ordered mine, and now I realized it's with the same specs as the people who have random crashes (ATI 4670, 6GB RAM, etc.). Am I likely to have this issue when my laptop arrives, or is there no way to tell?

EDIT: I do have the i7-820QM processor, does that make a difference?

This will be one of my last posts as an "owner" ...

This is a beautiful laptop ... the RGB screen is breathtaking ... it will be hard to go back ...

With that being said ... I have had a few occasions with the monitor would come up green ... or blue ... typically a restart would fix it.

Tonight though I could not get it back for a good hour ... tried everything ... with battery ... no battery ... etc ... it finally started working again ...

Of course Dell support offered to send me a new one ... but with the throttling issues ... power supply issues ... monitor issues ... I think I am just going to wait a few months and see if Dell fixes this beauty ...

Yep, I'm in the same boat. My machine locks up when watching youtube videos in full screen. Would this be a hardware issue or software/driver issue? This is the only issue I have with this machine and it is driving me CRAZY.

I heard it's an issue with USB on this PM55 chipset, and possibly the desktop version also, it's pretty widespread.

I had my suspicions it was a video driver issue as well. When I looked at the driver release date in the device control panels (not dell's website) it was like July or something. Dell couldn't have had much time to test it on win7 at that time. I also saw a lot of ATI related errors in the event viewer.

I've since returned the laptop because I reached 21 days and there was still no definite fix. Its a shame, the system really offers me the exact specs I'm looking for at a reasonable price.

For all the people that what videos/movies/southpark episodes online and have issues with freezing/black screen after 5 minutes or so just go to your control panel>>power options>>now click on change plan settings: (Change below settings to never)

    Dim the display = Never
Turn off the display = Never
Put the computer to sleep = Never

or set it for like a much longer time as if you are watching something and one of the above plans goes into effect you will get the frozen screen/black back ground. If you change the setting to never it does not happen at least this it what I found to fix that issue for now until the driver issue is fixed.

Hi, after all the problems with SXPS 1645 I'm hopefully cancelling my order and I'm thinking about getting Asus G51j instead... What do you think? Isn't it somewhat lower quality?
There are 2 major thinks I dislike about Asus G51j:
    1. there is no RGBLED - is the difference so big? Because I've seen people saying it's gorgeous but also another people saying that thay prefer WLED
    2. sound: asus has no subwoofer, I don't know how much would be the difference, will it be very noticeable???

What do you think of getting G51j instead of SXPS 1645 in general???

PS: I'm not gamer, but sometimes I play demanding games like Crysis, MW2 etc. so it has some weight for me (but not crucial)

I can only tell you about my experience with the 1645 and I have to say that for me its been great as I am not a gamer at all and in using it for:
    1. watching movies
    2. playing music
    3. surfing the internet
    4. emailing
    5. burning movies/music
    6. using MS office products

all the above have worked just fine and I do not have any issues and am very satisfied. If you need to use it where you are going to stress the machine or need to take it to its limits then you will have an issue, this is about the best way I can explain this to you. When and if dell is going to be able to fix that issue is anybodies guess.

2by4: actually any laptop will handle those tasks nowadays...

"When and if dell is going to be able to fix that issue is anybodies guess."
That's what I'm getting worried about too.

Do you have RGB-LED? If so - have you seen any usual 1920x1080 LED display? How much is the difference? I know RGB is better for most people, but how much noticeable is it? Does it alone justify buing SXPS 1645 instead of G51j for you?

the one redeeming quality about this machine is the rbg screen, i will put up with the stuttering issues because of it. i will not go back to non rbg screens now just because it was like waking up or something, i cant explain, it just looks so good compared. mine has some dead pixels but it doesn't bother me too much.

sound on a laptop is junk, sub woofer of not, get some external speakers if you want decent sound. the 1645 sub woofer makes no difference to me, it still sounds like a$$ .

for not being a gamer those are some very graphically demanding games. i know the 1645 will play them, the 260 in the g51j might even do better though.

you can also have 2 hd in the g51j, something i really miss about going from the 1730 to the 1645, but i have a few externals so it shouldn't be too much of an issue.

the i7 is a new platform, so there are bound to be similar issues across all manufactures, so be aware it isn't necessarily a dell thing (although dell does suck, so i am sure they will be the last to fix the problems)

    1. Yes I have the RGB screen.
    2. The RBG is very rich/bright in color and I like it very much and I have not been able to compare it to the WLED but others said that it was very nice as well
    3. To be fare about which is better or would it justify to buy it just for the screen would be unfair to speak about as I have not been able to compare side by side and also I believe it is also a personal choice. Some think RBG is the best while others think WLED is the best for them, so its hard to say. I just want to be fair and truthful when I give sombody an answer. As far as I am concerned I have to say I love this screen.

For me, the whole basis of choosing the 1645 in the first place, was the RGBLED screen, it's a well priced machine with all the tech thats in there, well balanced with heat as far as I can tell. And although I cant have my screen at full brightness, the RGB is so powerful you'd never need to!

I am unfortunately in the same situation of looking for a replacement, my 2nd 1645 is shipping out to me now, but i'm worried already it'll have all of the problems of this machine.
But I dont want to give up this beautiful screen, the price, the optical drive, or anything else.....Dell, just make it work please!

In general everybody is going to have different opinions, as Wodstock states that the sound is Junk, I and my wife like the sound and think it certainly is decent if not better and I have seen others that though the sound was pretty good as well, everybody is going to have a different opinion.

Nope, and yup- I'm not experiencing any of these issues, and I do game (not extensively, just have Tomb Raider Anniversary on here atm), actually am pretty impressed with this machine, after Dell sent me 2 consecutive defective laptops in a row, an Alienware m15x,and a Studio 1557. The only thing I did was to update the bios to A03,set the power option to high performance, and uninstall McCrappie, and it's working fine for my needs. No overheating or throttling issues (like I said just TRA on here ATM though), no problems with iTunes synching my iPhone 3 GS, not freezing, no video card issues etc.,working beautifully. :D

Yup-no issues at all. Running stock Windows 7 Pro x64, and installed the latest iTunes x64 (it actually defaults to x64 on Apple's dload site) and have Outlook 2010 x86 installed and no synching issues and both the iPhone and the laptop work with no issues. :)

I have seen this behavior a few times (not often, and not predictably) and I have no solution. Twice it happened immediately after TweetDeck (a Twitter client) played its notification sound.

This is a separate issue, I believe, from the severe slowdown that occurs as some of us are watching flash videos full screen.

Try the below steps, it fixed it for me.

Hey, I just got my 1645 yesterday, does anyone else feel like the usb ports are too tight. I put in a receiver to my wireless mouse and when I tried to pull it out, part of the receiver got stuck inside. I was able to put it back together and now I put it in the esata port because its looser.

They are a bit tighter than my desktop's, but it hasn't caused me any problems with my flash drives.

The eSATA is definitely the one I use for my bulkier USB devices; lots more room. :)
