    Taking winks advice I gave Dell a call. to cut a story short Dell informed me that it was not an option (although did give a couple of Dell upgraded options) and said if I drop the icore7 then it would be OK. I did mention that the 5300 was a standard component on the U.S. spec but the sales assistant was having none of it.

    My brother's iPhone synced fine. For some reason, auto-sync was on, so he lost half his songs (we recovered them fine, though). I don't know if that was iTunes-related or the laptop (most likely iTunes, but it has never happened on any other computers), but we made a backup, transferred about 1GB worth of songs fine.

    However, I did notice that having the iPhone and my jump drive in at the same time caused Explorer to freeze a few times. I just unplugged the iPhone and all was good.

    I use the X-25M as a boot drive/program drive. All music/movies/documents/etc go on the 500GB drive that Dell shipped with the laptop. I just bought an external enclosure for it and stuck it in. I have the 80GB one (trying to save money!) and I've only used about 40GB of it after installing all my programs/games/drivers.

    Bull. Mine is perfect. I can take a picture of it, if you like, that you can show to Dell to prove that it's not a "normal" manufacturing thing.

    Haha, no, I feel. SSDs are going down in price so darn slowly.

    See, I guess I use my computer wrong. All my "media" accounts for about 2GB of stuff. All the rest is programs! lol....I guess I'll just wait.

    Does anyone else disk drive click when you open the computer or turn it on? I just have the DVD drive no blue-ray. I dont think the disk drive could be responsible for it dying though. I also noticed before it died the fan was running on full speed for a couple minutes which I dont think was needed since I wasn't pushing the system very hard.

    My drive beeps at me if I flip my laptop over too quickly. The fans for me have only been on full speed during a BIOS update? It's like a vacuum then.

    If you look within that same section in the ATI Control Panel, you'll see a dropdown above the Brightness/Gamma/Contrast sliders that says "All Channels".

    In that dropdown, you can select individual color channels (RGB) and turn each down/up. So select the one for Red and play with that.

    Hope that helps.

    Hi I have read somewhere that you can return Windows installation media and get a refund (since I don't thing that it's legal to force people to buy windows with their laptop, i know many people who use only linux...), which would be nice since I already have a win 7 license...
    Is it true?

    I can confirm there are major differences. The Dell card sucks balls. The Intel one is quite good.

    Yes. I'm in the end stages of getting my refund now. Getting $150 for it, then buying another edition from my school for $5. :)

    I am a lucky owner of the SXPS 1645 for 2 day :-D. I am quite happy. But i am concerned about my battery life. Battery Bar says 10,3% Wear Level after just 2 days. Can anybody else confirm problems with the battery (9cell). I already posted it here, but i would like hear from someone with the same system.

    I started off with e-mail. Initially demanded retail prices for all the software that they loaded on the computer (which I know/knew is unrealistic). They offered me $120 and told me the price was non-negotiable, but I showed them that I paid more than that for the OS, so they agreed to refund more. Eventually my rep on e-mail was stalling and refusing to give me any useful responses, so I asked him to have his manager call me. Manager looked at the 20 or so e-mails back and forth with the rep and forced me to rehash each and every point I made and why it's right and why Dell policy allows it. Ugh. Giant pain in the @$$.

    DeathWalking: OMG it doesn't sound like fun :-(

    Just in case: would you mind sending me some of your discussions with dell rep, or may be even some kind of invoice they probably emailed you about refund so that I have something to show them that it's possible so they won't keep telling me that it's not possible or so?

    (Sorry for my english, I'm from czech republic which is another reason why I want to return theirs english Win 7 Home)

    So, looking at dell.com to configure a 1645 and see what the prices are, it seems difficult to find the 1645, and when you do, there is only one config to start with, and it's $1649 ($2000+ list).

    What happened to the cheap ones???

    Hi.. just got my 1645 yesterday.. Was v. happy with the build quality &RGB Led display. And Win7 as well! Seems like a gd improvement over Vista.
    Till i got on to install games.. this is where my nightmare starts!! It can't even freaking play Sims 3 at the lowest configuration without lag & creaking sound!!
    And i tried NFS Shift.. Just as bad!! :(
    I had an ASUS G1s (2008 model) before & it's frustrating to feel that my old laptop is better than my 1 day old XPS!!! arrghh!!

    can someone tell me if there's any way in the world i can improve on the gameplay performance?

    Hi Everyone,

    What is the maximum number of partitions ( both physical & logical ) that Windows 7 can have.

    I am planning to format my HDD of 500 GB in the following manner.

    1. 50 GB for Windows and other softwares like Office etc.
    2. 4 partitions of 100 GB each for other stuff like movies, songs, personal stuff etc.

    Now according to the above mentioned partition plan, I am planing to have a total of 6 partitions (5 mentioned above and 1 for OEM stuff). But my Dell Support rep said that the max number of partitions supported by Windows 7 is 4. That is why I am seeking refuge in this forum to clear my doubts.

    I have done clean installs of Windows 98, Me and XP in my deskop, but have never tried installing Windows Vista or Windows 7. So please use semi-techincal language..

    Thanks!!

    @nizam

    Good question. You'd have to assign each jack a "set": center/sub, surround, and L/R. I didn't see that option in IDT, but I don't have the Creative stuff to find out. :(

    @aiee

    ThrottleStop and put the computer to sleep right before playing. Check out the S-XPS 1645 AC Power Throttle thread for more info.

    @SXPS

    I mean, I've never tried, but I'm pretty sure you can have more than 4 partitions. Granted, I've only tried 3, but it would seem a useless restriction to only allow 4.

    so.. I've had my 1645 for about a day now, and my fan has been running non-stop even doing the most simple tasks.. lowest temp was about 55C or so... i suspected that something was blocking the vents, between the fan and the heat sink.. so I opened it up and what do I see.. a piece of plastic blocking the heatsink...... it appears to be from the heat sink packing or manufacturing process... I took it out.. and now.. my idle temp is 43C and there is little or no sound from the fan... I'm glad I checked otherwise, had i started loading games up, it would have fried itself..

    so for all of you that have hot machines, check to make sure there's no packing.. to increase airflow, I also removed the "grill" sticker from the bottom plate.. works good now!!!

    Thanks for the reply Ibrahim.

    Is there any way of finding out the upper limit. I don't want to be stuck at the Setup stage without any real options to get my 5th partition.

    And to top the vows Windows 7 will create one partition for itself. So that leaves me with only 3 partitions to work with.

    Does any one have any idea about the Virtual Machines (VM) on which we can try installing the Windows 7 before trying it on 1645. I mean idea about the whole concept of VMs. Also please suggest some VM tools / sites / softwares that can be used to test the installation.

    Merry Christmas to all of you.

    Cheers!!

    Windows 7 will display up to 24 Logical drives / partitions c: thru z: as long as there is a drive letter avail to assign.

    I'm guessing you could bind additional partitions to FQNs, but the computer would probably treat them as if they're network-attached partitions. It'd be interesting to try. Not that I understand why you need more than one partition. It's basically just a glorified folder, when you're segmenting a single drive.

    OK, I Google'd it and there actually is a maximum (what do you know!): 4 maximum partitions.

    Either 4 primary and then you're done.
    Or 3 primary and 1 logical; the logical can be split into 20+ partitions itself.

    Not sure on the virtualization. I just got into XP Mode like two days ago, lol.

    Could reduce thrashing if your working from the same partition most of the time... i cant see any real benifit though. if you have an ssd i could see it bieng worse as the life span of the drive is on a block basis. i would have really liked to see a second hdd bay with a raid cntrl available

    If you create partition with windows disk management, it will automatically create 4th partition as extended, and additional partition as logic.

    hi guys,
    I got my dell xps 1645 2 days back. I tried doing a clean installation but I found that the Windows 7 dvd is corrupt. Will they replace it for me? How many days approximately they will take to replace that. Any idea?
