They will replace it for you. Go through chat tech support and they will help you. Usually no wait times. Ask them to overnight it, and they might do that.

On past notebooks, I never had it go to sleep when shutting the lid. With Windows 7 and the ssd drive, it it so fast, I have started using the sleep function when closing the lid. The past 2 nights I just shut the lid, it went to sleep, but when I came down in the morning, the notebook was on at the login screen before ever opening the lid. Then, just awhile back, I shut the lid to go shave/shower, and I come back and the computer is on at the login screen without ever opening the lid.

Any ideas on why it is not staying asleep until I open the lid?

    Hi Everyone,

    Guess what??

I tried installing Windows 7 on Virtual Machine.

I started with the hard disk of 100 GB.

Windows 7 setup allowed only 4 primary partitions.

    1. One partition for OEM settings,
    2. C Drive of 40 GB for Windows 7,
    3. D Drive of 10 GB,
    4. E Drive of 10 GB,
    5. And the rest 40 GB was left as unallocated at the time of installing.

Once the fresh install was complete, I partitioned the rest of 40 GB into 3 more logical partitions of 10 GB, 10 GB and 20 GB.

So effectively I had 6 Partitions (40,10,10,10,10,20) after the whole exercise. And yes one more partition that Windows 7 creates. Phew!!

P.S.: This Virtual Machine thing is awesome.

Only problem that I faced is that I was not able to configure Sound in the Virtual Machine.

    Cheers!!!

    Hi Abhay,

I tried installing Windows 7 on Virtual Machine, and it got installed successfully.

I was talking to a Dell Support Rep who told me that people are getting problems with the DVD. Just call them and demand that a DVD should be sent at the earliest.

Is your system working or has it stopped working because u tried a fresh install??

    Bye.

    Hey guys,
Today i noticed i was not getting a preview of PDF files in the preview pane of explorer. It seems it don't work in 64 bit windows versions. Anyhow i came across a fix that worked like a charm for me. there is a auto fix or a manual fix, (i did the manual fix). seems soooo easy to fix, but like dell, adobe seems fine with users to come up with a solution themselves.... Even then, don't utilize/implement the fix for other users. This might be useful to some.
    HERE IS THE FIX

I have to say, the more I look at my (RGBLED) display, the more I'm dissatisfied :(

I have tried tweaking the settings for the reds, but everything just looks terribly over-saturated. Anyone who's had this issue and found a solution, would you mind sharing your configuration with me? The faster I can try and solve this, the faster I can decide if I want to keep the laptop or not.

    Thanks!

After removing headphones, I don't get any sound from the speakers. The Dell diagnostics software reports that it thinks one of the headphone jacks has headphones connected. This post shows a user with the same problem with the 1640:

    http://forum.notebookreview.com/showpost.php?p=4586448&postcount=2206

Is this something I could try fixing myself? Or will it require a visit from a support technician?

I highly doubt anyone has any information on this. The lenses for reading Blurays have always been hard to make, which is what produced the shortage back when it first came out. This is probably what is happening now. Given that Dell doesn't "stock up" on things (their business model involves JIT ordering) they won't begin to offer it until they can be assured of no supply problems.

Long time lurker here and finally bought two XPS 16 systems for X-mas. (One for my wife and one for myself) Overall, a bit upset. Just got off the phone with tech support with the same problem as the post above. Updated new BIOS, took the battery out, but no luck. Works fine every now and then but eventually goes to a black screen. (Can still see image but bulb is out) This was happening during boot up. If I was lucky to get through boot up, the screen would go black after hitting the brightness adjustment.

A tech is coming to the house Tuesday to replace the entire monitor. Never had any issues with my old Inspiron e1505.

RGBLED screen is nice but nothing to go nuts over. Would of saved my money and gone with the WLED.
Battery life is horriblle. One of the worse I have seen.

:) Besides that it is a quick little machine with the wireless card.

After that incident I had with the magenta screen I experienced the blacked out screen issue as well. Weird thing is that on reboot, the bios screen showed up fine then mid-way through boot it would go dark again, I suspect its something to do with the driver.

However, I closed the lid to put the unit to sleep and reopened it and everything was fine so far.

I just tried the newer beta drivers released by ATI/AMD, maybe that will solve this issue. I do hope its not a hardware issue and just a software glitch.

wow, i love the rgb screen, i will never go back. i had dead pixels int my first machine but since it has been replaced i have had no problems. would have paid double for for the screen. and the battery life is fantastic! i am used to much larger machines (m1710, m1730), but i get 2.5-3 hours which is about the same as my 1330 with the 9 cell... you must be used to better equipment but i am 99% satisfied with my 1645, which is saying a lot compared to the last few machines i have owned from dell. very surprised, i didn't think i would like anything at all and luckily i really like it

i adjusted nothing, it looks superb to me without any adjustment. i normally use a dell 24" 2408 (which has been the nicest display i have owned before i got my 1645)with my gateway fx, but i find the rgb in my 1645 is more vibrant so i prefer it to the 24" despite the size. the comparison with my fx and 1730's screens is like night and day too me. maybe i just got 2 excellent rgb displays (although, as i mentioned the first had 30 dead pixels) i dont know, i really like mine so far. i never move it outside so maybe it is worse in the sun, not sure about that

Aren't the Reds a little too crazy for you? I mean I look at pictures and the fleshtones are just way too red.

I was able to get movie colors under control via the Avivo Settings.. but man its painful to look at the reds/greens/blues otherwise. its just too strong and over saturated.

Like Jester, I am starting to consider a return to dell..

Here's an example of a Red thats just way off its almost neon

    sample-neon-red

Then here's an example of a pink that's way too crazy, and also the skin is a little too red.
    sample-skin-off-color-pink-too-bright

Here's another red thats way too red: sample

the blue's are ok and so are the greens.. its the reds that are just way off the chart.

    what do you guys think

Wow those look perfect to me. The dress brooke is wearing is quite neon, but the picture is not good to me... her skin on both my 1645 and desktop(2408) is tan.. no red at all.
did you change you settings in control panel/color management? all my settings there are default also... never tried the color calibration, maybe it will work for you.

This is an ultra-wide color gamut display and they always look ridiculous out of the box. They're supposed to be used with applications that support color profiles (like Photoshop) in order to produce accurate colors. Normally these sort of displays are only sold to people who do professional graphics or photography work, but now they started pushing them on consumers and most software isn't really ready for it.

The basic problem is the display has a wider range of color than a typical monitor. So when a program says "display this in red", it appears redder than it is on a normal monitor. Most programs expect all displays to have roughly the same color range and just blindly throw colors at them, but the RGBLED panel isn't normal and needs extra color management.

You should refer to this thread for how to set up the monitor: http://forum.notebookreview.com/showthread.php?t=382939

I had also this ridiculous red colors.
Now i use firefox and have an ICC proifile (from the RGBled settings thread) installed and the colors are much better.
I want to do a calibration with my own spider 3 because i think this is the best way to go.
But for now the borowed profile works for me.

I had all of the issues spoken of here ... this is why I returned the laptop.

It would work great for a week ... and then I would have a day where I would have to fight with the screen. Taking out the battery and putting it back in usually solved the issue. Sometimes though I could just not get it back. I would try an hour or two later and it would work. There were others too that were reporting similar issues as mine.

I needed a laptop I could count on; hence, I returned it.

I might order again mid January ... hopefully by then they would have figured things out with this laptop.

    A beautiful laptop otherwise ...

Hopefully I can set it up so games look okay. How would you go about fixing the reds if they were too red during a game? Without ruining the accuracy you have in photoshop?

Dells official answer? where is that?

i have a XPS 16, and the answer is yes. i use it for all my HD, Bluray, encoding video, and gaming. you can use a 130W adapter, and throttlestop until Dell gives an offical fix.

so while you may opt for the HP Envy 15, or just get the dell and see if it works for you, the answer is far from a cut and dried "no"

btw, i also encode HD video, and run CAD on it, and i have no complaints.

If you call dell ask about the performance issue, they will give you the answer, this is a multimedia laptop not for gaming.
