I have heard the same. I have tried a bunch of different things, but with the Turbo Boost,, undervolting would probably make it very unstable. thats just my theory though

    Hi Everyone,

For those of you using Esata have you noticed that the cable when plugged into the laptop it is a little loose. Not much but I am just worried that something could happen during data transfer.

    Thanks,

Note sure if anyone can help here. I re-installed W7 from the DVD and have lost the ability to do a factory image restore from the restore partition (hidden). I have done some research and it seem that the Dell datasafe local 2.0 software may do the trick. The problem is where do I get it from. The web based version is a plenty but not the local.

    Help appreciated.

BTW I know that the image is held in the WMI format which is installed via the Microsoft WAIK system but just cant get the image to ISO.

I don't know if everyone in this thread knows, but there is a fix in the making that will get rid of the throttling issue. The fix also includes a new 130 watt power adapter.

Hey. Can someone else confirm this for me?

Can you play some music, click the battery icon, click more power options, click Dell Battery Meter on the left panel (last item), and quickly switch between the battery life and battery health tabs? Do you hear some crackle/pop every time you click battery health?

Are you using Firefox? The same thing kept happening to me with Napster and YouTube. Someone suggested the latest Adobe Flash, and it solved the problem for me:

I have just noticed keeps appearing on my screen. I can rub them of for now using a cloth but is that consistent or should I raise the little black bumpers somehow? Anyone else notice this. I recall reading it but not sure if it was with the 1645.

Just curious, during the testing that you participated in with Dell; how many days would you say your laptop was unusable? Particularly you were waiting on a Dell technician to replace a part.

For the broken motherboard? Maybe 2 hours while he replaced it.

Sorry, I did not. I actually canceled by subscription to all the threads but the throttle one a few days ago; school has gotten quite a bit more busy and time is short. :(

But, I did find the message. :D No problem. And, really, I had good reason to believe Dell would fix it, seeing as I've been in email contact with Bill since mid-December and you can tell how helpful/honest he is! :D

Hey, you still having the problem with sound? Have you checked what format you are running? Control panel>sound>double click speakers>Advanced tab>Default format. I use 24 bit, 96000hz. I dont know if the sound card is 24 bit but go through the choices if you listen closely there is a difference on all of them. Pick the one that works the best. I was having problems with the windows start sound crackling and fixed it.

On a side note, they are testing bios A07 (read it on Direct2dell, the forum admin) and will be shipping 130w power bricks. I am so happy, bioshock is hard to play on this laptop.

I am having crackling issues when I am watching LOST. They are DVD rips and it happens at random intervals throughout the episodes maybe 4-5 times each. I dont have problems with youtube or skype and I know it isnt the video because my girlfriend mentions no crackling when she watches them on her laptop. I see at the top of this page a mention of changing the sound settings but it is currently set at "DVD" and don't know what I should change it to / what the difference is. Can anyone help/ has one had and then fixed this type of problem? The sound it makes is just like when you get shocked by static and is just as short.

It is kind of hard to pin point since it happens so randomly and quickly. But it is possibly coming from both speakers (not at the same time). It also isn't a rattle at all. It is a sharp snap type sound, like a spark, or a static ZAP.

All I can say is that I have no issues at all with the sound on my 1645. I do NOT have the X-FI software option, just the default sound and using the latest available drivers. I actually find the sound to be quite loud and decently clear (at least for a laptop).

Nearly every laptop I had gets too warm on the lap. I would highly recommend against using it on the lap or placing it on a couch without one of those trays - I forgot what they're called, targus makes them.

I have and external drive connected to esata port and it nice and firm. The cable came with the external case which is sourced as Transcend. Loose cable connections could be more to do with the cable quality rather than the actual socket on the laptop.

Did you try the "imagex" solution? Go through the following link1 and link2. The link elaborates about restoring Vista and not Windows 7, but I guess its worth a try! You need not 'burn' the WMI image. Just boot in to a WindowsPE(Preinstallation Environment) and invoke imagex from there.

I'm not sure if there is a specific driver for the webcam, the microsoft one seems to work ok. The Dell Webcam software can be downloaded from https://smartsource.dell.com (mydelldownloads, or whatever it's called). You have to register with your service tag, then you can download all the software there. I think there are a few versions of the webcam software, I downloaded the latest ones and seems fine.

Hi I know it has been answered like billion times, but I urgently need to know and can't find it: does replacing of thermal paste on SXPS 1645 void warranty in any way? I think not but just want to make sure since I did that about three weeks ago and my laptop died yesterday and the technician is coming on monday. I'd at least put there some similar to what used to be there in case it would void warranty...

Wow, seems I am experiencing overheating issue. I start the Windows Live Photo gallery with 100 images loaded and average CPU usage is 10-12%. Everything runs smooth and there is no problem, except the cores' temperature - average is 65%. Core4 even went to 75 for a sec or two. Once I close the gallery the temps go down to ~50 for all cores.

Can anyone else reproduce this ?

    Thanks

HeadHunter, don't worry about. I've done it before and nothing happened when I had a tech come in. Just show the technician to your computer and act like an unsuspecting customer. :) They shouldn't notice anything at all, and If they do just pretend like you don't. lol.

Hey thanks for this, in a previous post I mentioned there was distortion with the sound....A couple of days after that I actually clean installed win7 (not factory reset) and for some reason I couldn't register the X-Fi Software, because the site was down....so I left it uninstalled - needless to say, the same thing as you perfect sound with no distortion! yay! So i conclude that it's probably the X-Fi software! Or some weird settings in there that I couldn't figure out before.....So I'm not re-installing it, I'm leaving my computer as-is! ;)

    Cheers!

has anyone's 1645 experienced a constant soft buzzing/beeping sound? I don't really know how to describe it, but I'm pretty sure its not the hard drive as I updated those drivers for the hard drive sounds. I'm wondering if its coming from either my wifi or bT? Its a pretty high pitched sound.

sorry if this has already been posted before, but these threads get so large and I just can't seem to find the answer through search.

Yes, it's there. It's the harddrive producing some kind of noise. It also manifests itself in the headphone jack if you listen carefully enough.

Hello all, could anyone tell me why I would want an xps 1645 when I can get a studio 17 with the nearly identical specs for cheaper? The only difference I can tell is the screen. Thanks in advance.
