Yes, the hard lockups are a separate issue from flash. Please check out the last page or so of this thread:

Quick and very simple question here. When I go to the Dell driver download site, how do I know which drivers I need to update? I received my laptop at the end of december so I'm assuming most drivers that were released before then came with my pc.
-
Also, after upgrading my BIOS to A07 I've had 3 crashes of my computer. The keyboard stops working. This is while surfing the internet. I then have to reboot the system. Anyone else with this problem? By the way, on win 7, what do you usually do when the system crashes? I don't see any task manager.
-
Can you describe the crash more? What exactly do you see? Can you move the cursor? Does the screen go black or is it just frozen? Or is the screen refresh just really really slow?
To access the Task Manager, right click on the clock in the lower right and select Task Manager. You can also type CTL-ALT-DEL to bring up a screen with Task Manager as a choice. -
semblance,
thanks for your reply. The crash consists of the screen freezing. The cursor doesn't move anymore, and the screen is frozen. Neither can I do anything with the keyboard (I was typing ctl-alt-del but nothing happened). The only thing that works is turning off the computer.
Any ideas? It has happened already twice while browsing in the last hour, it's not even doing anything intensive. I didn't have this problem before upgrading to A07. I'd appreciate any suggestions. Thanks. -
Check out the link in my post right above yours. It's a link to a thread here where various people have worked through various crash/freeze problems (although these freezes were before A07). For me, uninstalling the SB X-Fi MB software cured all of my freezes (this is back when I was running A02 and A03). However, there seems to be a number of different crash/freeze behaviors so it is all a little confusing.
-
well, my DVD lockup turned out to be just a one-time deal - the DVD played perfectly normally today.
-
That's pretty much the same as my lock up / freeze except my mouse pointer still moves but the function or clicking does not work. Also Ctl+Alt+Del would do nothing. I had to hold down on the power button to force power off to shut down and then reboot. I had this happening with A06 and now A07. I had a freeze early this morning and have been running clean the rest of the day (13 hours now).
-
willybug, sounds similar, except that my cursor doesn't move.
On the dell driver download page, both A06 and A07 appear as "urgent" download. Does that mean I need to download both? Sorry for my ignorance.
I went from A01 or A02 (whichever came with the laptop) straight to A07. -
You can only download A07 since it includes A06 as well. They are cumulative.
Only A07. -
Does Dell take back the original 90W adapter when giving out the 130W adapter? I am outstation currently, and I will not be able to return back the old 90W adapter if they need it back immediately!
-
Dell is letting us keep the 90W adapter. Of course, someone could always make a mistake when they send you your 130W and ask for the other one back. But those of us who got the 130W were allowed to keep the original.
-
hi
well i am unable to boot into GUI of diagnostic partion. It come's up with a GRUB error .
I got GRUP 2 installed as boot manger. Has any one with Linix and GRUB 2 managed to reach the GUI for the In built Diagnostics partation? -
Placed my order for my 1645 yesterday morning. Last night got an e-mail saying my order was canceled but might be re-ordered and to call so and so to if it doesn't show re-ordered.
arghh. -
HI ALL!
I wanted to ask if its possible to get dell to plug another hd mobility 4670 on my 1645 and use the two in crossfire mode?
does crossfire work when both gpu are same?
my system is

Its a laptop not a desktop brother!! Crossfire is there in limited laptops and are pre-configured!
-
on the phone with Dell re-ordering my 1645, apparently for whatever reason it was canceled yesterday. lol
-
New member here. I just ordered my XPS 16 on V-day, so far mine is "In Production". I'll be keeping my fingers crossed.
-
Congratulations!
So on the Val's Day, you got a new love
-
He ordered his new love on V-Day
-
good luck, now when I re-ordered, I didn't get the 3% DPA discount, nor apparently 12 months interest free. It didn't say anything until after the order was placed. I just contacted DFS via e-mail. I'm about to say GFY to dell and buy an envy.
-
LOL! I did, mail order bride. My current wife is jealous! Ha
-
haha my wife wanted to surprise me buy getting me one for my birthday in early march, I'm glad I just tried to do all this myself, she would have a nervous breakdown with the well Dell handles things.
-
LOL. I understand what you mean. I am also picky about what I want. Heh. Hopefully most of the issues being posted will be worked out for everyone. Main usage for me is multitasking with Adobe PS,IL,LR. Perhaps some gaming every now and then. I've got Mass Effect 2 and Bioshock 2 waiting to be installed... Single Player only. I ask for alot from my system but it's mainly going to be used for work.
-
Yeah, I'm excited, I don't do a ton of heavy multitasking, but it'll be nice knowing my laptop will handle it.
Dell finally called me back and got my order placed. I now have an order number and a EDD of 3/4/2010. Hopefully everything goes smoothly. -
I received my 130w adapter from Dell today (very quick shipping - only ordered Sunday night). The shipment included a return label and instructions to return the 90w adapter within 10 days to avoid billing collection. I would have liked to kept the 90w adapter as a backup but I am very happy to get a free 130w replacement. I also called Customer Service to confirm the expected return and they did tell me that I was expected to return the 90w adapter or I would be billed. Oh well I guess I'm not as lucky as others by being allowed to keep the 90w adapter but I did get the new 130w unit.
-
Bill from Dell stated that we should not be asked to return the 90W adapters. He really should show up to explain what is going on. You could try to send him a PM.
-
Multitasking indeed. I have used the Vaio F Series for a bit and loved that aspect the Corei7. My desktop is getting old, and i'm always moving around so I need as much power as I can afford.
I am still 'In Production.' My EDD is 3/3/2010. Looks like we'll be getting our toys/tools around the same time.
Have you read into the throttling issues? I'm curious as to how our builds are going to be. I'll be looking into that and reporting back as soon as I get it. Heh. -
I'm not too worried about it, considering Bill is saying all new orders ship with 130w adapters and I would assume A07 bios. If not, I have no issue with updating the bios. I will report in as soon as I get mine. I will probably do a video of the unboxing and share it.
will be interested to hear how yours works in comparison to mine, since we have such similar EDD's. -
My EDD is 02/25/10
My lappy is currently in production. When I get mine i'll see whats up and let all of you know what new 16's come with. Til then I must wait!
-
I recently received a 1645 as a replacement for my m1530 and was wondering if there's any way to check the infrared port and make sure its working. I had a travel remote for the m1530 and it worked fine but it doesn't for the 1645 even though Dell said it should. They sent a new remote to try and I had no luck with that one either. I even spent an 1.5 hrs on the phone with tech support today only to have them tell me that the remotes are only compatible with vista, which I know is BS but was too worn out to argue at that point.
I was also wondering, would the infrared port work with the Gmote ap for Android phones? I thought I read somewhere on here that the IR only worked with Dell's travel remotes. -
Does anyone have a link or info as to exactly which chipset drivers from the Intel website we should download? I also have lock-up issues when watching full-screen flash video.
-
Well, I just RMAed my Sony F series laptop due to washed out screen and throttling problems. Got sick of that thing with the screen. No matter how it was adjusted, it looked crappy, and hard to view good from any angle.
Here is my new XPS 16 I just ordered. Tell me what you think! I only downgraded the processor to the 720 vs the 820 on the Sony, and the blu-ray isn't a burner but a reader. I got 8 gig of ram this time, better warranty, bigger hd, better screen and video card. Hopefully the processor speed won't be that much of a difference as the price just wasn't worth the additional cost.

The Vaio F series has throttling problems?
-
Yes under battery. Pretty bad when it is under battery too, can't do much without the laptop lagging.
-
I'll be looking forward to that unboxing vid! Good luck to you Chucked, hope you get that 130W brick. I'll also be posting the status on my order.
I also had the VAIO F. Returned it since the screen was a little too dim which also made the colors look dull for my preference. My main use for it was photo processing/graphic design. I also had found a color profile from someone who had calibrated their screen with the Spyder 3. After installation it was a bit better, but I still prefer a brighter screen than the F series. I didn't test for throttling issues though. I am now currently waiting for my XPS 1645 to get here, meanwhile, I have reverted back to my desktop for work, not as fast as the Corei7 but I don't have any complaints about my monitor... except that I am now spoiled by 1920x1080 resolution. Ha. -
Exactly what I do. I do photo processing with my Nikon D90 and ADobe CS4. I also adjusted the screen with Spyder 3 profile, it helped, but still that screen was just terrible. Look at it straight on, the top corners still didn't show a solid lighting across the screen. Brightness wasn't a problem on the F though if you turn off the Auto Brightness in Vaio Control Center. But having it evenly across the screen is.
-
I had the same DVD Video Lockup, Crappy performance issue as well with my Blue Ray, RGBLED. It was solved with the latest firmware update with this drive via the Dell Website. I was able to solve the Flash crashes with the Flash Beta, and updated ATI drivers.
This was with Bios A01, and the 90 watt adapter. The A07 and 130 watt only make things better. -
Nikon D90, I also have one!
Yes, F series screen is surely unevenly lit. I would rather have had it brighter than its max. I disabled the auto brightness and still was unhappy with it. I am now looking forward to the XPS 1645! Too bad the RGBLED screen was unavailable at the time I ordered it. -
Hi all,
Just to let you all know, I created a thread for the heat vent issue on XPS 16XX series laptops.
It can be found here!
http://forum.notebookreview.com/showthread.php?p=5900640#post5900640
Please let dell know we'd appreciate this modified so that the heat isn't output directly on the screen!
Thanks! -
Hi, is there any standalone driver for webcam in this laptop? I know it's creative, but I couldn't find a driver...
I don't want to install dell webcam central or what's the name of that, but does it contain different driver than standard windows driver??? -
I would like to see an answer for this question too. Even when you put your service tag in, it seems like you are offered a host of drivers that you don't need, or you have to know which display adapter, which sound card, which hard drive, your complete specs of everything to decide which you actually need. Is there a way to do this and get it right? I'd like to keep my drivers up to date, but the driver download site seems to offer generic general drivers, even when it "knows" your particular set up, and it always takes me a while to find my exact information on what's inside this laptop. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
-
There's no automated way to download only the relevant drivers, as far as I know. It's really just a tedious process of trying to figure out what you have and seeing if the version posted on the site is newer.
-
Question: I have great difficulty typing on this machine without having my thumb hit the trackpad, sending the cursor off to random places. Is there software available that can disable the trackpad while typing?
-
I believe there is a utility called TouchFreeze. Free too!
Source: http://lifehacker.com/5412986/touchfreeze-disables-your-touchpad-as-soon-as-you-start-typing -
Hi Everyone. I just received my 1645 today. I haven't played with it too much yet but for those of you still waiting for yours mine shipped with the 90W adapter and had BIOS A06 installed. I was proactive and Bill shipped me the 130W adapter so I have it in hand. Thanks Bill!
I will upgrade the BIOS and see what happens. -
Congrats Tigg! I'll definitely be on top of the 130W brick. Good to hear yours arrived safe and sound.
I'm still waiting on mine. EDD 3/3/10... hopefully it doesn't get revised but then again there is a demand for this notebook.
-
Thanks. It seems to be working. This is very helpful.
-
If you reinstalled Windows make sure to reinstall the Synaptics touchpad driver. It has some smarts about preventing accidental touches. Any time I do a clean install of Windows, I'll start hitting the touchpad accidentally when typing, and have to grab the driver before I go crazy.
