If I remember correctly, this port will also allow you to charge peripherals (iPhone, etc.) even when the computer is off using some kind of setting? I could be wrong.
-
Nope.... You are actually right..... You can charge any device that is chargeable by USB when the LAPTOP off...... It just takes the necessary power from the battery.... Put the laptop in AC and no issues...
There is a setting in BIOS that you have to enable.... But for me it was already enabled. Check it out... It might be already enabled for you. You have to pulg it in after the laptop is completely shut down otherwise it will not be recognized. -
I'm sold. Trying to find 40% mystery plan (no luck yet) to get within my budget and want to buy. Sounds like an awesome machine!
-
It is an awesome machine for its price range.... Go ahead if you can change the THERMAL paste to a good one (like AS5) and have a notebook cooler....
If they fix the GPU throttling issue (heat vent issue), then i think this is the best laptop in this price range!!
-
sorry again for being a noob, but what's the point of changing the thermal paste to a good one? AS5 stands for Artic "something" 5 was it?
is that also needed to fix the GPU throttling issue?
or only the bios A07 and 130watt adapter is needed to fix it?
thanks -
Dude.... The A07 or A08 BIOS update and the 130W adapter only fix the CPU throttling..... They have allowed more power to go into the system.... 110W approx i think... And as a result more heat is generated and it is not dissipated that efficiently and hence the GPU hits the max temp set by Dell which is 84C and hence the GPU starts throttling....
So you have to put Artic Silver 5 thermal paste or any other good one and also have a notebook cooler and then you can stress your laptop to the limits and it will take it happily.....
Just my two Rupees!!!

Good Luck. -
so i just got my new laptop. it has a small scratch on the keyboard area not really noticeable its like 1 inch long but consists of small dots not a straight scratch. should i care to complain?
-
Can't you quickly and simply go back to a restore point before problem was initiated. Windows 7 is pretty good in this area and I have done it successfully a couple times (saved my butt and a lot of trouble).
-
Should I upgrade from A07 to A08? Is there any issues with A08?
Thanks. -
electrosoft Perpetualist Matrixist
I'm running A08 (upgraded from A03) w/ a 150W PSU (PA-15) and a 920XM and it runs lovely.
A08 + Good Thermal Paste + 130w+ PSU = Mmmmmm -
Just read on an aussie forum that someone managed to get a new 5 series card in their SXPS 16 ... trying to track down the source of the info ... anyone here heard this?

Hey guys, I have a few questions that need answering..
1) My touchpad is a bit weird. If I alt-tab to a firefox window for example and I try scroll using the right side of my touchpad straight away it doesn't work, but does on the 2nd try. It happens every single time I switch from another window or even change from a tab in firefox. Have tried reinstalling drivers and tried using other drivers.
Also have problems when scrolling using the bar on the side of the screen or dragging a box around. For no reason (I'm still holding left click) it just lets the box go and will sometimes randomly minimise the screen behind. Possible problem with touchpad? Should I get it replaced? Saw someone else have the same troubles and they had it replaced and it's now fine so should I do that?
2) I notice on my screen it seems to be "bleeding", in that there are small lines that look really bright and I just wipe my finger over it and it's gone. Sort of as if there was some liquid on it. It's only a tiny vertical line on the screen that's probably only half a milimeter but it's really weird and I haven't had the problem before with any other laptops.
3) I'm not good with opening computers but when I run a few programs the laptop gets pretty damn hot. Should I still attempt to do that thermal paste "fix"? I only have a 90w adapter too so do I just call Dell up and request a 130w one? And apart from those 2 things is that all I have to do to help reduce the temperature?
Sorry for all the questions but if anyone can help with these problems please then thanks a lot...also if anything needs more explaining such as #2 I can try and explain it a bit better
Thanks! -
Hey magoo.
For question # 1, call Dell and have them repair the laptop, sounds like hardware issues.
#2 same as above.
#3 I just did the thermal paste replacement from the amazing video guide and had almost no issues. I couldn't get that damn wire out like the guy did in the video, my wire seemed to be buried deeper into the machine on both ends, where he managed to get the wire out completely to make the job easier. To bypass this issue, I just worked the wire on both sides of the southbridge to loosen it enough to slip the cooling cover from under the wire.
I also couldn't get the stupid fan power plug to come out as I was worried if I pulled any harder it'd break, so I had to hold the entire cooling system in my hand while working (not fun). But I still managed to get the job done, in less than 40 minutes.
As for the 130 watt adaptor, please get Dell to exchange it for you to "unlock" the power of the machine you paid for (call XPS technical support as all other departments I tried to get the request completed were completely lazy and useless)! I am currently awaiting my replacement adaptor as well as Dell was too incompetent to ship it with my laptop purchase as promised (and as they were supposed to start doing without the end user having to ensure its inclusion into the initial order).
Hope that helps! -
is this it? http://www.arcticsilver.com/as5.htm
how do i apply that?? -
The Indian version of The Dell Online store now charges 12$ for the 130W AC Adapter.
http://configure.ap.dell.com/dellstore/config.aspx?oc=s541020in8&c=in&l=en&s=dhs&cs=indhs1
So does that mean customers can order the 90W PSU now and later get the 130W PSU free of cost? What would happen to those who have no knowledge on these issues? -
1. Can someone please tell the exact part numbers of 130W and 90W adapters ?
2. What are the CPU and GPU temperatures after which throttling starts ? -
Someone really should alert Dell India that the price of the 130w adaptor should be the same. These sorts of 'mistakes' do happen occasionally.
The part number of the 130W slim adaptor that can be found in Asia is CM161. -
....and Dell wants to move their manufacturing to India:laugh:
Thanks, pradipudhaya; you have won the laugh out loud prize of the day.

I just received my 130 watt adaptor and I got part # JU012. This part # returns a REFURBISHED 130 watt adaptor on their web-site...
Are they actually sending people refurbished when they just bought brand new?! -
Just got off the phone with Dell. They promised that the adaptor is in fact brand new, yet my cord has 2 indents that look like a wheeled computer chair ran it over. So they are going to resend another adaptor.
Now I have a seperate question, is it safe to update to the latest graphics card driver from ATI's web-site? Anyone here done so yet? They have 10.3 drivers on their site, while Dell has 8.634. Will this cause any issues if I upgrade from ATI's site? -
Can someone here link me to 130w adapters for 1645 on ebay for international shipping ? Preferably original and below $50.
-
@pradipudhaya
That's the dumbest thing an company can make..
They know they are having problems with 90W and why the hell do they still give an option for 90W in customize section..
I have asked your same question few days back and members here say that we can have replacement for free..
But new orders may have some twist..
