Does anyone else's power supply get ridiculously hot? I mean, "I can't touch it for more than a split second hot". I think I could seriously scramble eggs on top of it.

BTW, why we will hardly *ever* see the 2.8GHz clock:

"RealTemp won't likely ever report the full 21 because during any 1 second sampling interval, other cores get woken up out of the C3/C6 state and become active which instantly drops your maximum multiplier. That's why Intel recommends that software should report the average multiplier because it can be changing so rapidly that sampling it once per second the way most software continues to do it, is often times misleading."

From the developer for Real Temp.

I gets uncomfortable hot after about a few hours of intense applications or gaming, but I don't think it would burn my hands unless I kept it on there for more than a minute. (okay, maybe a bit less).

But to give you an idea, my power supply is at the edge of my desk and there hasn't been any paint melting or burns.

Me too, it is the case for the new Dell slim charger with Studio and XPS laptop. It is the effect of reduced size and weight at the expense of heat. At least it is easy to carry.

I noticed a couple of days ago that I had a dead pixel in the center of the screen. I read your post and they are coming out tomorrow to fix it! Its not bad but still, I just bought the thing.

I'm sorry in advance, I'm pretty sure I read that the vent location on the 1645 is identical as the 1640, but can some one post a pic of the bottom of their 1645? I'm going to pick up a coolerpad and I'm trying to decide on which to go with.

The Zalman doesn't seem to have any vents where it would really benefit the laptop, or does it line up better then it seems like it would?

well the only issue is those coolers are designed to sit on a desk. i like to use my notebook in bed or on the sofa, otherwise i might as well use my PC

having said that i might get the logitech lapdesk instead, it has a hard surface on top instead of being like a cushion, which must harm cooling.

Laptop coolers are so ridiculous, just put it on a desk and get over it. It came with a fan, I have used this computer on my lap and on my bed with no issue.

Playing games on your lap for more than a few minutes is so ridiculous, just put it on a cooler (or lap desk) and get over it. ;)

I've always used some kind of support between my laptops and my lap when working in bed/on couch/what have you for more then a few minutes. All of them get somewhat uncomfortable after a while in my experience. I haven't received my 1645 yet, but with an i7 and 4670 I can't imagine this one will be any different.

To each their own, of course.

    I've Got 2 questions:

    1. How is the RGB Backlight Full HD looking outside and on the workfloor under strong light. Can u still read everything or does the glossy screen reflects so much that u can't ?

    2. What brand and type is the 256GB SSD disk u can order ? How many times can u write to it when I install for example windows 2007 do I have problems because it constantly tries to write the pagefile to disk ?

    Hey guys.

I'm new here, came across this site and thread from a Google search. Hopefully you guys can help me out.

I purchased the XPS 1645 and received it last week. Overall it seems like a great machine, I'm just confused about the media card reader.

I don't know if I'm overlooking something, or Dell made a mistake, or what. But on the right side of my laptop, next to where it says SD and all of that, it's just a blank plastic piece. I can't move it, pull it out, anything. It looks, well, exactly like the "Right Ports" photo on the product image page.

So am I missing something and I really have the media card reader? Or did Dell forget to install it? I've been trying to talk to Customer Care/Tech Support for hours last night and this morning and none of them can answer the question on whether or not it comes standard with the XPS 1645 (which I believe it does), or whether or not I have it, or what to do if I don't have it.

So if anyone has an answer that would greatly help me. Thanks :D

If it's the same port type than on digital cameras you must push it inside the computer until you hear a click. Then it goes out by itself

Okay, I figured it out. The latest ATI drivers (9-9_beta_win7_64_dd_CC) causes the issue with the sound, oddly enough. There must be something conflicting with the IDT and Sound Blaster drivers/software.

I finally received my laptop (as of yesterday) - I ordered in September ha ha. It is Arctic White with Bluray RE, bluetooth, win 7 64bit, and the smaller 15.6" 1080p WLED Screen.

I have no need for the RGBLED screen (I am colorblind and can only notice the difference in brightness). The WLED has better contrast in my opinion.

If anyone needs anything (Pictures, Review, etc...) I can make a video or something. If any other owners have not got back with you, I will do my best to do so.

I posted my order history in the order status section of the forum. If you are curious as to how much I paid, my exact configuration, order dates etc... go here: http://forum.notebookreview.com/showpost.php?p=5535714&postcount=313

From dells base driver i believe 9_9 adds the HDMI HD audio support for blue ray and whatnot. So not too odd that the graphics driver is now mucking with audio due to the HDMI port.

Hi folks. I have not received my SXPS 16 yet. From the sounds of things maybe that's a good thing. I hope to receive it by 12/4/09 and hopefully all the customer durability / development by you folks will be integrated into mine when it finally gets delivered. Sounds like the SXPS 16 computer / components / software are being developed and evaluated by the first buyers and customer base (absolutely amazes me that there are so many issues with hardware and drivers). I am not a computer guru and hope I am not sorry to be purchasing a unit at this time (maybe before it is completely developed and signed off - is this normal in the computer industry or just with Dell?).

Its just a more complicated launch than normal as you have new hardware (Intel i7 CPU, which uses a new motherboard), and you have a new OS from Microsoft (Windows 7).

Launch day driver support for windows 7 is massively improved over driver support for the Vista launch.

For those of you who are asking for pix and videos of the XPS 16, just go to YouTube and search for "Studio XPS 16." You will find many videos on the subjects of unboxing, reviews, gaming, etc. Sort the list by date to see videos on the newest XPS 16 models.

Just to reassure you, I have had NO problems with mine. Mine came with windows 7 home. There have been no problems with sound. I had it running through the night, installing, retrieving backed up files, and playing AION. It ran great. It is NOT as hot as the Dell 1640 was. This laptop is GREAT at multitasking. I am actually wishing I had the money to buy a solid state drive because my bottleneck is truly my hard-drive (7200RPM 500GB).

No, I have seen the RGBLED Screen. I compared them while in Best Buy. I noticed that it is brighter, but blacks, and whites look better on the WLED.

    * Also the RGBLED was $250 more (extra money I couldn't afford to spill out)
    * RGBLED has very vivid reds... too vivid when compared to the WLED.
    * I have trouble with greens which makes reds stand out to me. The last thing I need is a screen that makes them stick out more.

    * Many others that bought the RGBLED say that it needs a lot of tweaking.

So due to these reasons I chose the WLED :D

Yeah I got the RGBLED addon on impulse and regret it, waste of money considering how cheap laptop LCD panels are compared to real monitors, could have thrown in a netbook.

Yes, Best Buy had Studio XPS 1640's with RGBLED screen's on display.

I bought a 1640 with a WLED from dell.com in Auguest. I got the laptop in September and quickly sent it back when I saw the 1645 with core i7 come out. I went with the WLED again, because for me, the RGBLED was not worth the extra capitol.

I don't know what sound card you have, mine is the standard IDT with soundblaster emulation software; it's the default sound card when you build your XPS16. I do not have soundblaster reinstalled on this reformat...that might be your culprit.

Are you sure about that, Ayiden? When was this? I worked at bestbuy in GS/PC Sales for 2 years, overlapping the time when the 1640 was first released, up till 6 months ago and we were a flagship store. Never once on the website or in store did we have RGBLED screens on the 1640. The only difference that it ever went through was 3 CPU revisions (slightly faster CPUs) and increases in RAM. All the other specs stayed the same.

I actually almost bought one on a steal of a deal, and did not because we didn't have the option of getting RGB....

Hi Ayiden... Congrats on getting your box. I really be interested in hearing your subjective opinion on the sharpness, contrast, etc of that WLED screen. I'd also love to see pictures of it from all the different angles.

    Head on
    Tilted down
    Tilted up
    Tilted left
    Tilted right
and each of the four corner options (eg: tilted up left, then up right, etc.)

(all with the camera relatively stationary, where your head would be)

I've seen tons of pictures and reviews of the RGBLED but very, very few of the WLED.

Also, if you have the time, could you run 3DMark 03, 05 and 06? The 4670 hasn't changed but I wonder what difference the i7 makes on those benchmarks. They'd be useful comparing them to the non-i7 3Dmark scores.

Thanks for your offer and enjoy your system.

I just cancelled my Latitude Z order because of Dell reps and their utter lack of knowing anything about what they sell, or even caring if they sell anything.
