Both the i5-520M/i5-540M and the i7-620M can support RAM up to 1067Mhz, so even though the 1647's get shipped with higher performance RAM, we won't really see any of those extra Mhz's.

The Quad's however (720QM & 820QM), do support the 1333Mhz RAM. But then again, they have other issues ^^

Ps. we should make a keygen for discounts on dell :p

Do you know if the SSDs for the XPS1647 support the TRIM function?

@zyc_hot: ah ok ... thanks for that. Unfortnately I'm not associated with a school anymore (uni days are long gone) so probably sh*t out of luck there. Back to the waiting game! :) Hopefully 1647 available here sometime soon.

It's the same, but its not the same. The 620 has the same spec in that its only rated for 1066 modules. However, I'm reasonable sure the memory will still run at 1333. Can't tell for sure though as CPU-Z refuses to tell me.

Apparently there are Samsung firmware updates that enable this. I have yet to receive mine (hopefully I will get it this year...), so I don't know for sure.

My apologies everyone .. I thought my settings were at max. They were all set to high, not very high. I didn't realize that there was something above high as when I autoconfigured it said it put everything high. SO I cranked everything up to very high. I also got Crysis' console up to have it show me frame rates.

At everything set to very high I get 5 - 8 fps and its laggy. It doesn't stutter or stop but the computer can't keep up to that. The sound is fine though.

At everything set to high (where I was testing before) I get 20 - 25 fps and as I said before it plays just fine.

With some things set down to medium such as particles I get 25 - 30 fps and again it plays just fine.

That makes more sense to me. At least now I understand why there was a discrepancy and I hate unexplained things like that.

My frame rates by the way don't change whether I am on battery or not. I'll try them again once I get my 130W adapter from work and run throttlestop at the same time to see if there is a difference then.

Do any of you guyes have issues with the bios hangning at 3/4 of loading process ? I've narrowed it down to this : if i disable the setting "pc card / 1394" setting in the bios, it always boots fine, but when i put that setting on, sometimes it boots, sometimes it does not. Dell diagnostics utility did not find anything !

Should i return it and get a new one ? (i got the laptop the 28th)

I've also just noticed that i have the pm55 chipset. (I've got the core i5 520m), so that pisses me off since Dell said they would have the hm55 with the i5's.

Hey all. Been following this thread closely and it's good to hear that the throttling issues with the 1645 aren't evidenced in the 1647. I'm about ready to pull the trigger, but wanted a quick sanity check on the system I'm looking to buy. My uses are software development, photoshop, and light gaming (flight sim, etc.). Not a Crysis fan (yet lol), and don't intend to use this as a true gaming platform. Just want a significant upgrade from my HP laptop.

Here's the primary specs. Cost is $1329 through EPP. Good deal? Bad deal?

    i5-520
    ATI 4670, 1GB
    WLED 1600 x 900 screen
    4GB DDR3 Ram
    500GB drive
    Intel 6200 WLAN card
6 cell battery (not a big deal for me)
    2-yr in home service

    Thanks!

I just had something similar, with my old dimension... When I would use the cardreader (the SM slot) it wouldn't start... if there was nothing in it, it works fine ^^

weird, it wasa shortcut of some sort...

I should mention that the price I mentioned ($1329) includes a 2-yr in home warranty, not the basic 1-yr warranty. Does that change anything?

They increased pricing again. Upgrade to i5-540m is now $160? Wasn't it was $150?

They also now indicate the selection of the slot DVD-RW drive will delay shipping. They seems to have shortage everywhere.

What sucks is Blu-Ray is available on the Inspirion and not on XPS model.

They took out XPS 13 from the list

The non-XPS Studio model, highest CPU you can get is i5-520m, max memory you can config with is 4GB. Seems to put a lot of focus in their Inspirion models lately.

By the look of it, XPS is a dying breed? :(

they just brough us the xps 1647... how soon do you really think they'll make a new line? Maybe ur right, but doesn't it seem unlikely?

Maybe they could bring the good old XPS back... as in, without studio (I really love the studio xps though)

I've used Asus laptop before. Two series as a matter of fact. I am tired of ODM laptop. They are not as well built and lack of support sucks. Asus update with drivers and support isn't there.

I think I've narrow down to with XPS 16 or HP Envy 15. I am leaning towards Envy 15 for the weight factor.

Confirmed! My laptop will be at my doorstep today!

...Sadly, I am stuck at work and can't get home until later tonight. Also, my wife was stuck at home all day and wants to get out and about this afternoon. I don't think it would go over very well if I told her she can't leave the house until my package arrives.

Has anyone ever risked leaving a note for FedEx to leave it on the doorstep? I hate going out to the main hub to pick it up after hours...

    ODM are Original Design Manufactured

Basically brown boxed laptop that they deliver to companies as barebone and these companies then put whatever they want inside it

For example, Alienware, they don't or at least didn't in the past manufactured their laptop. It was designed and manufactured by Clevo.

Asus originally back in the days did the MacBook, etc...

Ha ha.... You must have a pretty obedient wife. :D

If I told my wife to stay home until the laptop comes she would just laugh at me and leave anyway. We're on two different ends of the spectrum when it comes to electronics and gadgets. I get so worked up and excited about them, and she couldn't care less.

In the end, it's good for me. I'll get the tests up as soon as I can.

Actually, every OEM besides Asus uses ODM's for laptop manufacture. Dell/AW, HP, Sony, Acer, Toshiba, LG, etc

Not sure if they still make systems for other OEM's but Asus itself is an ODM.
