Its just the Cpu that is the decision maker.also I don't know how Dell works with best buy.I know if you buy from dell you get that in home service after phone diagnostics.I don't know if they honor that when you buy through Bestbuy. Also I would check to see the resolution on that screen. Its not a bad price at all but me personally would wait until presidents day see what dell has to offer.

However I doubt dell will ever beat that price from best buy maybe match but not beat for those specs at least

That price is for the 1-yr standard warranty, and of course BB's web site doesn't list the screen resolution. it would have to be 1600 x 900 I would guess (that's the lowest resolution they come with).

Hey guys! I'm typing this on my new xps 1647!! This machine is absolutely gorgeous by the way, strong build!! Also, the WLED screen for anyone with doubts... is amazing!

The only thing I would change is the touchpad (too much friction) but the rest = amazing.

Time to do a full reinstall then do some benchmarks!!

    Cheers

Todays Update 2/4: Called the order modification department again today to check on the RGB LED status. Was told the RGB screens are now in stock, and my order was 'released to production'. .. and it would take around 12 hrs for the status information to be replicated to other dell systems (which show the status).

Hope the rep is correct. Fingers crossed.

Can someone waiting for RGB screens call 1-800-247-2076 and check ?
FYI, i placed the order on 1/16 during signature event.

    Hey!

Thanks guys! I ordered on January 26th, no specials really.... just the website discounts (which as it turns out was cheaper than the prices now!).

I've been told and prepared for the fan noise... and I've also been forewarned that the fan will be on 95% of the time, I just want to confirm this with you guys, is this your experience as well (or anybodys lol)?

I'm in the process of reinstalling, looking forward to doing some benchmarks!!

Hey Guy....I just got my 1647 today....and I have some news for you guys....I run some test with the 90w adapter...1920x1080 resolution,

    1. Furmark:

    Avg Multip: x22 Cmod% :100% chip%:100% cpu temp: 60

    2. Prime95:

    same as Furmark

    3. Furmark + Prime 95:

    Avg Multip: lock at x12 Cmod% :100% chip%:100%

cpu Temp: 75, however, after fan fully kick on, reduce to 65

Same test with only battery power set on performance:

all there cases has avg Multp: x22 Cmod% :100% chip%:100%

So the conclusion is my xps 1647 throttles....please see my signature for specs.....
I have almost the exact spec as DW, but he doesn't throttle and I do.....this is very strange....I am going to test some games later on.....

Maybe it's the three year warrenty that's causing the throttling, joke joke ^^

But other then that, the only difference I can see between you and DW is the HDD/SDD As DW has an intel 80GB SDD and you use the 500GB 7.200rpm HDD

    soooo...

Ps look at the bright side! No reason to not get RGB any more ^^

I was hoping that the WLED would help as well. Mine better not throttle, especially with it being the lowest i5 of the bunch. Does Dell accept returns without the restocking fee if it does throttle?

Fan is on about 5% of the time while idle and only about 60% at load.
What the hell. We have a different HDD and a different wireless card. Alright, I'm going to put the original HDD back in the computer and see what I find out.

Maybe it's time we learn to accept that this magnificant looking notebook is a marvelous piece of... wait a second!

How about we're looking at this the wrong way?! I mean... it might be a fetch, but how about a clean install vs dell image :|

Don't know if it were DW, but I know for certain that some of you did do a clean install before testing, no?

Just a crazy person talking ^^

I don't see how the Dell install would have differences between a fresh install. You aren't modifying the BIOS or power usage by reformatting your hard drive.

I'm getting ready to leave from work so I'll have some tests up by tonight. I'll do some tests on the install from Dell (quicker when I get home) and then I'll do some more tests on a fresh install (what I plan on doing anyways).

If the probable isn't the cause, you must search the inprobable.. ;)

I wouldn't think it had anything to do with it either, but if we can exclude it, we will be further along the way of finding out what the hell is wrong ^^

Okay. Got the laptop. It really is stunning like everybody says. However, some red flags have already popped up.

I haven't updated any drivers or anything so that could be the issue, but both cores are at about 68 degrees celcius while IDLING. That is waaaaaay too hot, in my opinion. Also, the GPU is idling at around 55 degrees celcius. A little warm for idle as well. As a side note, I have one of those plastic panels with a fan in the middle that blows cool air up the middle onto the laptop, so I know it's getting the proper airflow.

I am downloading Furmark and Prime95 while I am typing this so I'll put up some numbers shortly. Again, keep in mind that this is without updating the original Dell configuration out of the box.

EDIT: Interesting. I downloaded Real Temp 3.4 and it's giving me 33 and 39 degrees celcius. I am guessing that Core Temp 0.99.5 is giving me a wrong reading on the CPU. I remember reading that Core Temp is sometimes inaccurate with some CPUs. Anways onto testing!

Actually, as I get ready to run the two programs, I'm a little nervous to jump right in. ~70 degrees C is really high. I think under load, the processors might get too high.

Is this normal? I am used to my quad core on my desktop idling around 25 degrees C.

Since I was an XPS owner with RGBLED and now the ENVY with ultra brightview, I can say that to me they are almost same quality. The screen on the envy ultra brightview is very crisp, sharp, very bright and colors are very vivid and balanced.

    Test results (I'm pissed...)

Laptop on 90W power and set to "High Performance"
Brightness at full on WLED screen

    Prime 95
    Multiplier at 19
    Core Speed at 2.5 Ghz

    Furmark
Multiplier at 18-19 (sometimes drops to 14)
    Core Speed at 2.5 Ghz

    Furmark and Prime95 running together
    Multiplier locked at 11
    Core Speed at 1.4 Ghz

Dammit that pisses me off. I can't believe the i5 430 is throttling. I guess the wattage is the same between the 430, 520, and 540 so all of them aren't getting enough power.

    ....Any ideas or other tests?

    Strange....

    Test Results on battery power.

Screen set to max brightness, set to "High Performance"

    Prime 95
Multiplier hovers at 18 and 19

    Furmark
Multiplier hovers between 17 and 19

Prime95 and Furmark at the same time
Multiplier hovers between 16 and 19

I definitely am getting better performance on the battery. I'm going to go back through the thread and see if Stormwerks had the same experience. That is really odd.

Innovated!! Awesome that you got yours today too dude! Looks like we're all FINALLY getting our machines today :)

Ok, so the lowdown. After I got the laptop, I did a reinstall.... mostly because I like to create a partition, 60GB primary, 440GB the rest (or something like that). Reason I do this? So that if I ever have to do a reinstall, I won't have to backup my mp3's, movies, photos etc... because they're stored on the other partition. The only thing on my C drive is the OS and installed programs for which I have a DVD burned with EVERYTHING I need (photoshop, dreamweaver, ultraedit etc..). I've had to reinstall so many times in my life that I go into war prepared lol. Plus, I got the student deal on Windows 7 Professional, so I upgraded from the stock home premium that came with the system.

Ok, that being said, I could confirm everything the other boys in here are saying, according to the tests some of my dork friends have run... there is some throttling going on. Here's the word though... coming from a PC god "It's throttling a bit, but it's not as bad as the 1645 and unless the person is a professional gamer, it will make absolutely NO difference whatsoever in their PC experience, including moderate to semi-heavy gameplay."

Point is, if you're worried about the throttling, don't be.

Here's something I noticed on my system... the fan seems to be on really often. I personally don't care but is it the same on your guys's systems?

    Cheers!

I'll get to testing it soon. I am just finishing up with a fresh install (good Lord, I hate McAfee and had to get that off my system ASAP).

In response to your post above, that is good news from Dell and I am actually surprised they are working so feverishly on a fix. We'll see...

By the way, I'm installing Anno 1404 which is notorious for utilizing all four cores. My desktop can easily max this game, so it will be interesting to see how this laptop can handle it.

So hopefully a bios fix will fix the throttling for us i5 users. I doubt they'll have to send out higher wattage adapters.

Throttling is designed to protect the 90 watt adapters from trying to use too much power. If your laptop is throttling then it needs more than 90 watts. A bios update and a 130 watt adapter are needed to fix this.

You get a lot less throttling on battery power because the bios doesn't have to keep you under that 90 watt limit to protect the adapter because the adapter is no longer plugged in.

It looks like Dell is finally getting serious about fixing these issues for many of their laptops.
