Quickly looking at the fixes, it's probably just a bug fix update. He clearly stated that it wouldn't come till next week at the earliest so keep waiting for A04.

No it isnt. The BIOS that will fix the throttling issue is going to be A05, and its going to be released a few days later than 1645's BIOS
edit: Bill was faster than me, sorry. Oh.. and its A04 not A05 -
-
-
lol~~~I installed A03 already and run some tests.....STILL THROTTLES.......waiting for A04 ^^
-
Often times the notes (when included) are so generic that its a total crapshoot as to whether I need to even think about installing it or not and the "recommended" status from Dell while encouraging to at least look at the driver is almost competly useless.
Somebody needs to get the engineers to put up more info. I'm willing to bet that A04 when released if its the one that makes it out to address throttling will say "Increased stability and performance.". -
Well mine was delayed to the 17th now. ): My rep said she was unable to see any part causing the delay. I know its the screen. I really hope they get it out next week.

-
Ho hum. -
-
did the same with my sig too, leaving room on the bottom for additional EDD updates.
I have heard the same about the RGB and am going to wait it out as well. Too good of a system at too good a price.
Besides, Im not going to help out DELL clear out their backlog of orders by cancelling mine. I ordered it and I want it, (like a week ago). -
The only problem I have with this laptop is that the speaker rattles....but I already called dell to send a technician to replace it..... can't wait! -
Btw, never mind me asking, but... how is the multitouch touchpad? I never read any comments about it, I mean it's sure should be pretty damn good (as the one from the inspiron is actually lovely).
I just saw this and I was wondering if you're using these, and if it works -
-
Great to know... another something to brag about to mac-owners, hihi (a)
No seriously, that's superb, especially with all the new features in cs4... saves connecting the tablet for every little thing. Thanks for the quick reply -

Hi guys, I found 89 running processes on my xps16. How in the world could we get it down by removing unnecessary programs? The 'remove program'list just boggles me. I tried searching for a guide in the forums but to hits yet. Any help is appreciated. laptop seems a bit slow on restarts and shutdowns probably due to the many processes on.
-
Come on, touch pad with multi-touch function is awesome. Its great to look at a photo and Zoom in or out without even moving the pointer or without any clicks, its easy, fast, comfortable.
Multi-touch specially on a mac is great, I love the two-finger scrolling.. -
Just reformat.
Then reinstall mobility modded graphics drivers, sound drivers from idt, network drivers from broadcom, wireless drivers from intel, chipset driver installation utility from intel, touchpad drivers from synaptics, quickset from dell, the intel turbo boost driver from dell, and (if you have bluetooth) the bluetooth drivers from dell.
Plus any anti-virus/anti-spyware programs you wish to use, then the rest of your generic programs.

Just wondering, can you tell any difference between the WLED and RGBLED? And is there really a big significant difference in visual appeal with the missing 0.4" if I go with a WLED?
The RGBLED is back ordered... and it looks like I'M going to re order yet again.
But the phantom bluetooth may get me -

-
So what did Bill-B (The Dell Whisperer) say about the RGBs?
-
I don't know if I am supposed to repeat all of the details, but there definitely is a supply problem and it will be a while.... a while being we would be better off getting WLED's.
-
Oh Yesss!!!
I just looked at my order status after reading and posting to Josh and my status changed from Pre-production to production! I suggest others who have purchase dates around mine 1/16/ look at their statuses and see if they changed too. I am hoping for you all!!!
I just hope it doesn't in the "in production" mode for 3 weeks! -
-
I doubt it'll be able to make it by the EDD of Friday but I have no problem if it shows up early next week. -
It is the one I've been staring at in Pre-Production now for three weeks. -
-
-
Good luck.. -
-
I still have yet to receive the official delayed e-mail. Have you received yours yet?
-
I'M still waiting for Bill to get back to me on my last response to our emails, but he has given my case to a senior sales rep who knows what she is doing... So hopefully everything will work out eventually. -
I got an email for each of the last two delays. The latter one made me contact them to verify I wish to wait until 2/17 so the order would not cancel in 24 hours. Does that help? -
Let's hope they start getting these laptops built and shipped with the RGBLED screens. -
RGDLED is certainly amazing for a lot of folks, but that doesn't mean the WLED is crap. It's still one of the best screens on a laptop I've ever seen. -
Hey guys if anyone hasn't notices there is a new bios update for the 1647.... Im downloading and trying now!
http://support.dell.com/support/dow...typeid=-1&dateid=-1&formatid=-1&fileid=379814
Update takes FOREVER lol just make sure your not running anything because the laptop will reboot...
Running tests now!!!!! -
Just ran furmark and prime95 to get an idea of whats going on. Heres a summery of the results... I included a link to my log file if anyone is interested
14.00 100.0 100.0 100.0 43
14.00 100.0 100.0 100.0 42
14.00 100.0 100.0 100.0 43
14.00 100.0 100.0 100.0 43
It seems that they cpu is locking down at 14-15x
http://filesmelt.com/dl/ThrottleStopLog.txt -
Guys, any idea what the new updated bios A03 does to the system?
-
Your i5-520M is throttling. When fully loaded that CPU should be using no less than the default 18 multiplier. If your computer wasn't throttling it would be running 28.5% faster.
Now that you know that your computer is capable of throttling when pushed hard, you need to find some games or applications and log them to see if throttling is a problem in normal use.
Kenn: We know that A03 isn't the magic bullet to cure all throttling.
The Dell release notes say:
"Enhance graphic quality and system stability" -
I am currently playing through mass effect before I start playing the second one and usually began to lag at around 27fps at spots maxed out, With the new bios it no longer lags and the lowest fps I have seen in the same spots is 33. This could be a sign of better cpu management?
-
I believe what Dell is trying to do with the upcoming bios updates is to let the computer draw a few more watts so throttling is either not noticeable or doesn't happen during normal use including gaming. They're not interested in synthetic testing as much as they are interested in users having a good experience with their laptops without the severe slow downs that were originally happening to the XPS 1645.
Hopefully you're doing some logging while playing. That will help Dell see if they are doing a good job or not and if the 90 watt adapter is adequate for the XPS 1647. -
the darker blacks, how does that compare to the rgb then... on itself, does it really show.. or simply when they are side by side only?
-
Fingers crossed. -
