Thanks but I am worried now. I have part listed 320-8335 and others had that part number to and some said it is RGBLED while some didn't Hopefully there will be a way to confirm this.

I think the easiest way to tell without checking model numbers is if there is no gap between the screen and the metal hinge you have 16" rgb screen. If thre is agap of about 5 or so mm you have the 15.6 inch standard screen.

Thanks, because in October when I ordered (then canceled due to delays) I had this part 320-8341 16.0 inch Wide Screen 16:9 1080p Full HD RGBLED LCD, W/2.0 MP, XPS 1645. But I understand this is the 1647.

I also didn't see anything on the backlit keyboard. This is just automatically included right? How do you turn it on or is it on automatically?

Ye easiest way to tell is if you bought the 16" you should be fine :D. The keyboard is touch sensitive isnt it ? So I dont think you have o turn it on.

Dell doesn't do discounts? Let me call my sales rep back and tell him that he under charged me.

    1 224-6716 Studio XPS 16 Notebook $1599.00
    1 317-2361 Intel Core i7 720QM 1.6GHz (2.8 GHz Turbo Mode, 6MB Cache) $0.00
    1 317-2365 6GB, DDR3, 1333MHz 2 Dimm $0.00
    1 320-8338 16.0 inch Wide Screen 16:9 1080p Full HD RGBLED LCD, W/2.0 MP, XPS 1645 $0.00
    1 421-1010 Dell Webcam Central v1.4 $0.00
    1 421-0188 Facial Recognition $0.00
    1 320-8350 ATI Mobility RADEON HD 4670 1GB $0.00
    1 330-5460 DELL RESOURCE DVD,BACK-UP,XPS 1645 $0.00
    1 341-9802 320GB 7200 RPM SATA Hard Drive $0.00
1 320-8353 Merlot Red High Gloss Finish with Leather XPS 1645
    1 950-3338 2 Year Limited Warranty $0.00
    1 900-3981 CompleteCare Accidental DamageProtection, Inspiron, 2 Year $0.00
    1 905-6418 Dell Limited Hardware Warranty Plus At-Home Service, Extended Year(s) $0.00
1 905-5637 Dell Limited Hardware Warranty Plus At-Home Service, Initial Year $0.00
1 905-3971 Banctec Next Business Day In-Home Service after Remote Diagnosis , 1 Year Extended $0.00
1 906-5380 Banctec Next Business Day In-Home Service after Remote Diagnosis , Initial Year $0.00
    1 412-0360 Soft Contracts - Banctec $0.00
    1 412-0358 Soft Contracts - Consumer Complete Care $0.00
    1 902-0941 Warranty Support,1 Year Extended $0.00
    1 960-8710 Warranty Support,Initial Year $0.00
    Sub-Total : $1624.00

I found that if you enter Dell's website through google shopping(google xps 1645 then click shopping) that you can find builds that aren't available starting at dell.com. I built this when they started their current 20% off on XPS's, at the time they offered it on 1645's. I saved the build and called the number listed on Dell's business page ( I didn't want to speak with anyone in India). I got a rep on the phone and once he was able to find the build I told him the discount was nice but I needed more off to feel comfortable buying now. I told him that I would like them to throw in an RGB screen. He put me on hold and came back with an offer to take off another 90$ instead. Which was enough for me, then I added the rgb on anyway.

I said the reps dont, the fact that you got the $90 is from the manager which have a limit of $100. In some cases you will get a discount but certainly not $300 worth!!

Read the whole post first ;)

I knew they did discounts, apparently they were desperate enough and needed my business. But I just was talking to a rep through chat and she claimed I didn't get the RGBLED screen. I really don't know what to do. She said call the order modification department up tomorrow. Well if I didn't get it then for them to add it on is gonna be like $250 more? I was assured I got it from my epp sales rep. The chat rep doesn't know why she said that when its clearly not RGBLED.

Apparently this is WLED 320-8335 Premium FHD WLED Display, Obsidian Black, 2.0 MP Webcam

I am not lying, it was configured at $2,143 then she said I can do a $350 discount but that's it. First it was $200, then $300 and I said I'll order another day and then she said well I'll brb and came back with the $350 offer???

Which is exactly my point!! That was far to much of a discount, $350 you claimed - $250 for the screen = $50 which is about the right amount of discount you can get.

Sorry to hear about the screen dude, if she DEFFINATLY said it was there call the manager and ask them to check the sales log. They will be able to read the whole conversation. Then tell him you want it added on at no extra charge and putting to the front of the production line as you have already wasted time waiting for the order.

    Good luck mate ;)

Yeah that's probably what she did, downgrade the screen and make it look like I saved $350. But I said why does it say WLED she responded by saying "your getting the premium screen which is RGBLED"

When I call tomorrow do I call the order modification department or the dell epp sales department?

The keyboard isn't touch-sensitive. The media keys are.

There is a switch to toggle between high/low/off brightness on the keys.

Ye I think thats what shes done to, Heres how I would do it:

    1) If you have a quote sent through email or even a email with the extention of the sales rep. The extention will get you through to their sales group, from there ask to speak to a manger and quote the reps name who gave you the deal.

    2) Him or Her will be more inclined to help as the rep is under their command.

3)Explain word for word what happened and be forceful but NOT rude!

See what he can do for you. :) I would contact the reps manager you spoke to first, if that fails put the phone down and ring another manager. I havent spoke to any other departments so I cant really comment on them.

The part number is NOT the same as the one you have and you can see mine says right there RGBLED.

If you build a 1647 now, it shows the 320-8332 as the black high gloss rgb screen without the leather accent, and the 320-8335 as black rgb screen with the leather accent

Mine shows the 320-8335 and some say I'm getting RGBLED and some say I'm not. Dell claims I am. Its very confusing though how they number their parts.

EDIT: ON the phone with Dell Epp's CS rep and she confirmed it is RGBLED and for the convenience I got next day shipping :D I'm so happy $350 off my order plus next day shipping. She also confirmed that there is a Long version and the short version. The shoft version says 16" Full HD RGBLED Display when the long version says Premium FHD WLDED Display. The rep was very nice and apologized for the confusion and said its like this on different models of the sxps. Here is the email I got.

    Dear Matt,

Thank you for contacting Dell Customer Care.

This is in regards to our conversation that we had today about you calling in to enquire on the item # 320-8335 for the 16 Full HD RGBLED BLK-LTHR ( short description ) for the order # ********* for the Studio XPS 16 Notebook. The order is in pending production with an estimated shipping date as 02/10/2010 and the estimated delivery date as 02/11/2010. As a goodwill gesture I have upgraded the shipping method to the next business day delivery without you being charged anything extra.

Further to our conversation, I would like to bring to your notice that if you feel the issue(s) in question hasn’t been addressed to your satisfaction, please know that you can directly get in touch with the next level in my reporting hierarchy. All you need is a documentation of our conversation and the case # indicating the same is ********.

It was never our intention to leave any of your issues un-addressed; however, there may be instances when everything can’t be deemed ‘complete’ on a single call.

We are willing to follow-up on every of your concern and ensure that we leave you with a pleasant feeling towards the end of every interaction with us.

Somewhere in this thread is some stats and further analysis from UncleWebb (is that one b too many?) showing that the I5 (specifically the 540M) doesn't throttle at all.

Depends on usage. If you use multi-threaded programs, i7 (quad) is better. If you don't, then i7/i5 (dual) is better.

Turbo Boost narrows the margin (2.8GHz TB vs 3.33GHz TB won't be huge for most people), but the i7/i5 (dual) will still be faster.

I know games dont make use of all the cores on the i7-720QM yet, but the i7-720 is the better choice for gaming right ? Hope I dont start a duel core vs quad core war here.

Probably not, most games being dual core at most. The i5's can clock a lot higher then the quadcores, would get more performance with those games. IMO unless ya have software that uses all 4 cores on the quad, the i5 would be the better choice to get and probably be faster.

What the future hold is anyones guess though, maybe that will change.

Zero chance the quadcores being faster when throttling lol

Don't be. That's the most common problem with learning more about computers. You realize that new stuff keeps motherfudging coming out and you just spent $$$$.

That's why we should abolish system specifications and instead just do some kind of rating system (though much more thorough than useless WEI). Just run your computer for what you bought it for and it all gets better. :)

I'm not one to talk, though, LOL. I just aligned the partitions on my SSD (for no real point, just to gain 10% in benchmarks) and botched my Windows Recovery Environment at the same time, lol. Useless! Now I'm fixing that.

What makes me feel better some days is to open Task Manager and just stare at the eight threads. There is some uncomfortable solace there.....

I would not be depressed about having the 720qm. Its an extremely powerful processor, just in different ways. Having 8 threads available may be a big deal in the future. Its very future proof. I have plans to upgrade to solid state drives in the future, after they come down a bit for the bigger spaces, increasing the lifetime in my eyes a lot. Once the harddrive bottleneck is lessened, just think what those 4 cores can do.

I got two choices I can go with the the i5 build for $1099.00 with 900p screen or spend $200.00 more get the the i7 processor 1080p screen and 2 year warranty so I'm going with that option true I don't need i7 but all the other features I do ohh and it comes with 9 cell battery.

Make sure to read about the 1645 i7's throttling issue and see if that will affect you in any way.. link Its really quiet a big problem for users expecting performance/gaming out of it.

I dunno if it helps but when I got my XPS M1730 a couple of years ago it was pretty much the biggest baddest thing I could get my hands on. I mean dual video cards in a laptop?? 4G of RAM? WHOA! And here I am 2 years later waiting on a 1647 with newer bigger badder processors double the memory and guess what ... that M1730 still rocks every game I've loaded on it without a single hiccup.

Of course it has a power supply I can chain both dogs too and expect them to be unable to move it. I don't consider it obsolete even compared to the new one I have coming. Of course I don't consider it portable either .. lol.

The i7 is a quad core. Quad>Dual. In some applications.

But if using 1 threaded application, I think the i5 will perform better since they have a higher clock speed then the i7? Plz correct me if wrong.

It is better in gaming for games that are more supportive of multiple threads. For example Dragon Age makes brilliant use of all 8 threads available to me. I expect in the months to come Dual-Cores will become vastly inferior to Quads, due to applications making better use of the cores.

In a single threaded app I'm pretty sure the i5 would out-perform the i7.
