Better to be told now than to find out after you buy.

Go with the i5 mate, apparently is doesnt throttle any were near as much.
-
You hate us for telling you?
Hate Dell.
-
Oh I missed the question lol. I'm VERY happy with my system (throttlegate excluded) the i7 is a very potent processor lol and everywhere I go take my SXPS it turns a couple of heads. I am planning on changing a few things when component prices decrease. I want to double my RAM and maybe upgrade my processor the 920 or the 820. I hope that Dell produces an official fix soon so I can officially declare my laptop perfect but in the mean time thanks to Unclewebb's great app I can workaround it and I'm a happy camper.
-
Do you guys think that i5430 is really weak ?Or its good I want to run Mw2 assasins creed 2 and edit some videos from my HAVA.
-
Nice to hear, ye think im going to do the same as you and also add an SSD when those come down in price. Ye unclewebb did a great job on the throttle stop so I hear gald he picked up on it.
-
Maybe if I was the average Joe that does no research I would have bough this laptop and used in for years not even knowing about a throttle issue. Now I know somethings ****ed with my machine
-
fluffy, dont need to jump out of the office windows. The 720qm still clock up to 2.8ghz single core. Slow by no means on a lappy. and something like 2.4ghz or so with 2 cores.
The i5-430 may be a bit weak. As it doesnt turbo boost near as high as the others. It can go up to 2.5ghz, while the others can hit around 3ghz.
edit: oops 720qm is apparently 2.8ghz turbo on single core. Not sure where i got the 2.6ghz from -
I forgot about SSDs lol. I'll only consider getting one of those when I can get a 1TB without breaking the bank. I needs lots of storage space. TS is awesome. Hence the addition to the sig.
-
Actually the 720QM goes up to 2.8GHZ.
-
yeah whoops. Not sure why i was thinking that. So yeah definitely no need to be jumping out of office windows.
-
I'm still trying to understand throttling so in stupid terms If I use a demanding thing like playing games on high specs once it reaches a certain point it downgrades it self?Do I got this right?
-
Essentially the BIOS will choke the crap out of your processor and it will become slower than the ancient Celeron in my desktop. Which may or may not lead to visually obvious impacts in performance (stuttering, crackling etc...)
-
In the risk of going off topic, i replied to that in the throttling thread. here
-
Thanks......
-
Ahh right, good because to quote Mike Scinner "A grand doesnt come for free" I hate to see it go down the s**tter because I didnt make an informed decision.
1TB !! wow you do need alot of storage I was thinking more along the lines off 50GB
And im deffinatly gettin TS when my lappy arrives.
Throttleing in 'stupid terms':
Imagine running while there is a constant supply of air (energy to laptop) you will continue running at a steady pace with no problem.
Now imagine running the same race and when you get to a hill someone reuces the armount of air by half, your going to go slower right and you wont be able to get up that hill as quick as you would if you had alod of air.
I think thats right ? -
OHHHHH I get it now -
Yeah I do, I use 2 1TB external drives to meet my current needs lol.
I like the analogy but I think it'd go more like this, when you get to a hill the air is reduced by 75% and you choke and roll back down. -
LAMO
into a big pit of fire and nails.
2TB omg msut have alot fo songs and movies. -
Oh thats easy ... wait no its not.
-
lmao true.
Yeah I have a ton of songs (last I checked on my laptop there's over 4 days of music) I also do a lot of video editing and now that I have this computer I can edit HD video which takes up a lot more space. -
We know the i5 is better but a lot of people out there don't and will continue to buy the xps with it because they have not researched.I'm pretty sure even though theres a lot of us aware there even more unaware.
-
Cool guessing who im coming to for all my video editing question lol ! Your probably right I stumbled upon this forum so im sure theres people who havent gota clue, however although I have experienced my share of doubts (As everyone will tell you) I do believe there will be an official fix and if not TS is doing a damn good job as a stop gap.
-
The i5 doesn't have a throttling issue, seems to hum right along from what has been reported.
-
I just bought a Hava to do some wireless recording too I want to get into video editing as well
-
lol I don't mind if I happen to have the answers. I only use Sony Vegas though. I find Adobe layouts to be a royal pain.
-
Not to mention visually obvious cracks in the keyboard from banging your head on it in frustration ...
-
 I'll file a bodily harm lawsuit. This laptop did damage to my forehead.
-
Since I'm waiting untill next check to order looks like I will have more money Should I use $175 to upgrade to 6gb Ram?better hard drive?or should I get the RGB screen?
-
Good plan .. of course they'll probably offer to settle out of court by giving you a new XPS 17 with a stronger keyboard ...
-
Definitely RGB screen.
-
I won't settle for anything less than $10,000 and a Alienware Desktop lmao and a free system every 2 years.
-
Cant you just get a new system evey two years with the warrenty is shomething should happen to it. As for the $10,000 and the alienware desktop your own your own lol. Join the long que
-
Just about. When my warranty comes close to expiring, my SXPS will suffer a horrible accident.
-
Thats What I did
-
I spoke to DELL UK who told me I could take out the warrenty with them when I get back instead of taking it out with DELL US
-
I am so excited to receive this laptop
Anyone else currently awaiting an SXPS 1647?
-
I am! I will be playing with it around the 9th of February. I am quite excited too
-
cool, my edd is now Feb. 11
-
I'm patiently waiting for my 1647 to arrive. Ordered during the Signature Event sale and have an EDD of 2/3. I hope they deliver on time.
-
I don't think they're backed up. I read somewhere that they had to stop using bluray for a while because they're high in demand or something. Can I ask what kind of deal you got on yours with the signature event?
-
That event was awsome I nearly got a amazing core i7-620 deal for £1017 with free shipping and handling with no tax. Missed it by like a day
-
Specs are:
Intel CoreTM i5 540M processor (2C/4T, 2.53-3.06 GHz, 3M L3)
4GB, DDR3, 1333MHz 2 Dimm
16.0 inch Wide Screen 16:9 1080p Full HD RGBLED LCD, W/2.0 MP, XPS 1645
500GB 7200RPM Free Fall SensorSeagate Hard Drive
ATI Mobility RADEON HD 4670 1GB
8X DVD+/-RW Slot Load Drive for XPS1640
Intel 6200N Wireless Card
9-cell Battery
2-year warranty
Whole deal cost me $1399 + tax. Not too shabby, since it's replacing a 4 1/2 year old Insprion 6000 that cost me about $300 more than this way back when.
The only thing I heard that was having supply issues was the RGBLED...couple day wait tacked on for that. -
I was wondering how firm the prices are I mean what if I told my sales person hey I was made an offer on a hp dv8 laptop and wan't to know what you can offer me to beat their price for an Xps.
Or do you guys think theres not much they can do? -
Not a bad deal at all that extra year of warranty is not cheap plus you got the 9 cell battery
-
They dont price match
Iv tried.
-
Well not really price match but offer like a $50.00 off or free overnight shipping
-
Ye give it a try you dont know unless you ask
didnt do much for me at first until I had a b**ch with them.
-
Can I ask why you get the i7 knowing about the throttle issues
-
Here's my advice...
STAY AWAY FROM THE DV8. It has driver issues up the wall seriously. Mine is getting repaired as we speak by HP and was bought last month. That should say something...lol
