1647 only comes with a 4670 right?
-
I used the Brazilian guy's technique for cleaning the dust under the screen. Worked like a charm!
YouTube - Opening the screen of Dell's Studio XPS 1640
Give it a go if you've got annoying dust or something on the inside of your screen! It was a tiny hair that was bothering me, but it's gone now
-
Brendanmurphy Your Worst Nightmare
Unless you have a clean room in your house i wouldnt advise it your going to get more dust underneath then you had before -
i taped the edges of lcd up on the first day when the laptop arrived. it doesnt look all that pretty but it works.
-
Dust isn't a problem, but that one little hair was annoying! I've no idea how it got there! Haha

Can someone here confirm whether a 1647 with 5730 throttling while playing games(BF2,dirt 2) which are more intensive?and actually how better is a 5730 than 4670 in terms of frames??
-
With 130W adapter and 4670, with a cooling pad, I don't throttle on those.
The 5730 is about 20% better than the 4670! -
I hadn't been over this forum for awhile. But my previous xps 1640 died a week ago after installing and playing Starcraft 2 for half an hour and fried my video card
. Told it was around $600 to replace the motherboard/video card so i decided to get a new one instead. Today i score this xps 1647 from dell outlet. I got it for $764 before tax ($821 with tax), i thought it was a good deal but am not very sure. Just wondering if it is and how old is this laptop since i know they don't offer the RGB screen anymore. Any comments is appreciated! and its arriving tomorrow

Ordered my SXPS16 1647 on Monday, currently due to be delivered on 8/18/2010. I have some questions for you current users:
* Audio ports: fuzzy buzzy or crystal clear?
I had a M1530 that had a buzzing noise quite noticeable when using headphones. Anyone experience something like this with the SXPS16?
* Touch pad: centered between 'G' and 'H' keys or way right?
Call me psycho, but I don't think a laptop's deck is very well designed if the touchpad is constantly palmed while trying to type. The HP 8510P, for example, has the touchpad perfectly centered on the line between the G and H keys and I'd never palm the touchpad while typing on that. So can someone tell me how it is with the SXPS16?
* Speaker volume: loud and clear or not so grand?
Here I'm just curious if the speakers are of any good quality, or if they suck just like every other laptop speakers in existence.
* How's the screen quality?
I ordered mine with a 1600x900 WLED screen, and I'm not THAT bothered by the stupid 16x9 resolution seeing as how I've gotten used to it. However, I remember the craziness with the brand/model screen issues with the M1530, and I'm curious about the SXPS16. I haven't actually come across any posts anywhere of people complaining like in the old days. So what's up? How's YOUR screen?
I'm excited for it. I chose the i5 540 processor, but the previous laptop on my desk was an Elitebook with an i7-620, so I hope I don't notice the CPU performance drop too badly. I really shouldn't seeing as how I don't stress the unit at all while at work. Anyway, off to bed now! Thanks! -
Audio ports are crystal clear.
Touch pad is centered on Y key.
Speakers are loud and clear, and have nice bass. They're not exactly studio quality but they will fill a room up with music that doesn't sound like it's coming from the bottom of a soda can.
I can't speak for the screen quality on yours since I have a 1080p WLED, but I will say that so far I have noticed nothing amiss with mine. I've been looking like crazy for a color profile that's not 9000k+ though. I'd kill for a proper calibration on this screen. It bothers me, but I don't know how to do it myself.... -
Check out what I posted over in the 1645 lounge http://forum.notebookreview.com/del...7-owners-lounge-part-2-a-114.html#post6579143
I even have a calibrated color profile for the 900p LG screen if you're interested. -
Welcome to throttle city. Someone could correct me if I'm wrong, but the 1647 has a 90 watt adapter. And here are the estimates of the power the parts use.
i7 620: 45w (TDP+10w)
ATI 4670: 27w-34w
RGBLED: 30w
Other Components: 10w
Which is about 119w... -
Is it possible that the newer models in the 1647 series still have a choice of 3 different video cards?
- 565v (=4670?)
- 5650
- 5730
Is it possible to exchange them with something from eBay? -
I thought they fix the throttle issue on the xps 1647 with an BIOS update. does the 1647 still have this issue?
-
Nope, only the 5730 is available. The 5650 is not used with the SXPS line.
-
You might wanna contact the tech support and request for a 130w adapter. Just to be safe, of course.
-
No BIOS update could fix the physical limitation of the 90watt adapter not allowing more than 90watts (at least not with out destroying it, which Dell wouldn't do).
-
Ok, so if my retailer says it comes with 565v then it actually is an old model with 4670? It seems that Europe is not getting from the 5730 model, but only from the old batches.
-
what should i say to them to get the 130w adapter sent to me for free? will i have to sent the 90w back? thanks.
-
Yes, the 565v is the EXACT same thing as the 4670. There is NO difference. They just re-named it so they could continue using old 4670 parts in new 5*** generation laptops. It's not just a Dell thing, a couple of manufactures are using the '565v' thing now.
-
Oh, and they just started offering the 5730 in the 1647s in the US and Canada last week. They've been offering it in Australia for a few weeks now. I bet if you waited another week or 2, they'll come out in Europe as well.
And try your hardest to get a 130W adapter out of Dell. The 90W just doesn't cut it, not even with the 1647. Just the CPU/GPU alone are going to draw around 70W. -
would it void the warranty if i install my bluray drive from my old xps 1640 to the 1647?
-
No, things like HDD, ODD, and RAM are considered user swappable parts. You'll be fine unless you break something in the process, and they can prove that whatever problem you end up having was caused by you swapping out the drives.
-
so i'm assuming that if one of those upgrade parts broke down dell won't cover it under warranty since it did not come with the laptop?
-
That is correct. They'll still cover the laptop as a whole, but not any parts that didn't come with the laptop. Unless you purchase the upgrades from Dell as well, in which case they should be covered too.
-
Thanks for the clarification! So actually every laptop as of today, which comes out of the factory has the 5730 card? Which means sooner or later they have to sell them in Europe too! Thats great!
-
Tell them your adapter is hot and you're experiencing throttling. They will deny you if you tell them you just want one to feel safer. Yes, you'd have to send back your 90w back in a same box that comes with a replacement adapter.
-
Thanks. I received my laptop, no scratch or anything but already found the speaker problem. Its really bad on this one anything 40ish and up its starts to distorted/cracking/buzzing and after plugging in the 90w adepter for a bit it started getting really hot too
. Don't know about throttling yet, will be playing starcraft 2 and see how it goes. can anyone suggest programs that measure throttling? Thanks.
-
Use Throttlestop to monitor CPU throttling, and GPU-Z to monitor GPU throttling. They both have logging functions.

FYI all 1647 owners.
Dell has released (on 8/11/10)their versions of Intel WiFi drivers for the 6200, 6300, and 6250 wireless cards.
I've downloaded it (6200n) but have not yet installed it. Has anyone tried these drivers out? -
I have the 6300. My 1647 came stock with the 5300. i switched it for a 6200 then a 6300. I have no problems with it using the OEM drivers from Intel.
I am going to wait to see what improvements [if any] there are. -
Hey all, I just bought the Dell Studio XPS 1647 a few days ago with the Core i5 430 processor, 4 GB of Ram, and the ATI Radeon HD 4670.
The computer works pretty great and is slick and fast, but I'm experiencing just one problem really. Sometimes, about two to three times a day, the computer will just lock up randomly. It could happen when I'm renaming a file folder, closing something like steam, or opening the menu during a game.
I was wondering if anyone else is having this problem? Its just really annoying and I don't know if its a problem with the computer itself or maybe one of the drivers I updated, etc. -
Have you got fast access facial recognition software enabled? If you have that on 'continuous security' then it will lock up if your face moves out of the screen. That could be your problem.
-
I actually have it disabled, so I don't really know what the problem is. I thought it was because maybe the computer is new, but I'm not sure. It locked up twice today and is really starting to get on my nerves.
I still have all the bloatware and stuff on the computer, do you think reformatting and re-updating the drivers would fix the computer? I hope its not a hardware issue. When it works it works well, it just keeps locking up. I can't even get to task manager after it happens. I can only just hold the power button and reset it. -
I do a clean install on every computer I get as a matter of course. The manufacturers load so much garbage on these things at the factory it's amazing that they still work at all.
I'd try a fresh install, but don't erase the recovery partition. That way if you still get the problem on the fresh install, or if you screw something up, you can always use the recovery to restore it to the factory settings. -
Yeah a clean install sounds like the easiest option! Let us know how it goes!
-
Hmm thats not neggligible if not huge
,Also I am getting a replacemnt 1647 with an I5 540m with 5730,wonder how much difference would it be compared to my I7 620,4670 combo
.
Up or Down
?
-
Probably down!
I love the 620!
But the 5730 has some cool features and you'll get better battery life!
-
Well I honestly think it would be the other way, lets see
I dont think there would be much difference between 620 m & 540M
..atleast less than 4670/5730
-
But you still lose the 'i7' sticker!
I know it's silly, but the fact that I was buying an i7 made it completely worth the extra cost
-
I7 is a bad
for sure
..
-
This would not let me to add the word [ ]am surprised
-
Sure? Not even when the GPU reaches 84C?
Its winter down here and cant play any game without reaching 84C and that means I cant play any game with playable fps
The ventilation desing is so poor that in order to play decently a game I need to connect an external monitor and close de lid, im getting tired of this.
Where's Bill and the others Dell rep who said they where taking care of this issue? Bulls.hit -
well,I didnt have enough throttling with 620m/4670 which would make me to quit the game. But still it existed
...
-
The 620 has 1MB more cache and a slightly faster clock (133 Mhz more) speed, and higher max turbo (266 MHz higher max turbo). The most significant difference is the cache. Both have the same TDP.
The 5730 is about 20% faster, has DX11, and has a 9W lower TDP. I'd agree with you, the 5730 will make a bigger difference. -
The reason I am opting for a 540m is they tell me that 5730 isn't available with I7 620(may be in USA) else 620 would be my processor option. Now I have to furthur choose which one to go for I7 720/I5 540 with 5730 taking into consideration Gaming, battery life, heat(Throttling ofcourse
).I am leaned towards I5 for now....
-
A wise choice!
-
Guess u understood what I missed there...
-
Ah well the i7 dual cores are the best, the i7 quads are terrible
And since this is the 1647 owners lounge I think we're allowed a bit of banter with our 1645 rivals!
