I have the 4670. The fans will run constantly, as I'm typing this, it has been running for several minutes and sometime will speed up for a bit and slow down again, but still constantly running. I checked my running programs and everythings normal.
Processors are running about 38-42C and 40-45C right now.
-
1647 use diferent motherboard design and fan speed from 1640, 1647 is about 10c cooller than 1640. usually 1647 is around 73-75c on gaming while 1640 is 85-88c both w/o external cooling.
loud fan is normal and the right thing to do on a gaming laptop. -

I won a Dell XPS 1647 with following specs:
i7-620M
8GB RAM
256GB SSD
1GB ATI Mobility Radeon HD 5730
I had this machine as a my 2nd replacement unit for M1330. Since I got this 1647, I have been having issue with video lagging on external Dell ST2410 monitor. The types of video files that lags on the external Dell monitor is *.avi & *.mkv.
I also notice that the fan turns on and off every 4-10 minutes in general usages. I use this system for catching movies and basic usage (except for game).
Does anyone else have issues with video lagging on external monitor and fan turning on and off every 4-10 minutes. -
My CPU is running around 50 DegC but not doing much at all. utorrent is open as well as Firefox. It has been on for 24 hours however.
Weird question. I have the Dell XPS 1645. Purchased a spare adapter and the 90W version was provided. Got Dell to send out the 130W adapter but am now having second thoughts about which I should send back.
Should I keep the 90W or replace with the 130W. I seriously dont think I will be doing any gaming and do like the slimer styling. <scratches head> Maybe I am over thinking this ... -
keep the 130W. even if you do not game, you might need to run something that would require some CPU power. better to have the larger power brick "just in case" than be stuck with one that may not cut it when you need it.
-
Apparently the 130w will charge the battery quicker too, I dont think the 90w is that much smaller to warrant keeping it over the 130w.
-
Done. Thanks for your replies. Will send back the 90W adapter.
I asked Dell if I could keep it as a third adapter. They said, "If you give us $110".
I can buy it online for $70 delivered. Makes no sense. -

Hmmm ... I may need to consider the ebay route.
But now patiently awaiting my OS CD so I can start get this fresh install party started.
So far I have been pretty impressed with my new Dell XPS 1645 however. Jumping from Win XP to Win 7 too was a rather painless experience. In fact, it didn't take too long to get used to it at all.
Face recongnition software could be better. I will persist and hope it learns soon enough. And the fingerprint issue is a little annoying. Have no where near pushed it hard enough for throttling to be an issue as yet but it has performed a number of tasks seemlessly where my previous system would have crashed and burned.
Whats a good paritioning utility. I am a tad confused as I thought I could create a partition whilst re-installing Windows 7 but apparently it is not a complete partitioning utility and I am not entirelty sure what this means. -
Wait a second, if you call Dell to give you an OS CD they will?
-
-
hey gyz im about to buy this baby but i wanna know if i can OC the i5 430m processor? thx
-
-
What they should do is offer the Dell Restore as an OS only option. None of the Dell cr@pware. After you do a clean install, then give the user the option to install what she/he sees fit. Doesn't that sound reasonable? -

-
I have a question. How does Dell's 1 year battery replacement work? Can i just get mine replaced anytime just because I want a new one before its over?
-
The battery can be checked one of four [4] ways I think.
1. The battery itself has a button which you can hold down and a series of lights will indicate the battery status.
2. From the BIOS. There is a Battery Health tab which provides some guidance as to battery health and whether it needs replacing.
3. LED indication on laptop itself (my old laptop flashes amber)
4. General use. If your battery no longer lasts as long as it use too and takes forever to recharge or does not charge at all.
If you can get around all or explain away each of these four things, I imagine you can get your battery under warranty. You may also need to send in the old one but I am not certain.
Take all this advice with a grain of salt as have never tried it. -
ah well i bought it anyway, just waiting 4 it 2 arrive via usps.however i cant seem to load the tracking page, firefox gives me " Server not found
Firefox can't find the server at trkcnfrm1.smi.usps.com."

Why would I want to ask Dell? Because downloading Windows isn't entirely legal, if I were found with the file/disc I could get in trouble, while getting one from Dell is the most straightforward legitimate way. Not to mention my Internet is capped and I probably can't download it, not that I'd want to.
Dell has recently stopped providing the OS discs to customers, but I am not sure whether they were restore discs or actual OS discs. Whatever they were, it seems some of their PCs are sold without restore discs as well. I have warranty but it's limited. And I seriously doubt they will send a technician over With an OS disc to repair my PC if it came to that, even if they were unwilling to Give me the disc (which they easily could), but it won't stop me from hounding on them when the need arises. -
It is from an Official Microsoft Website. I believe as long as you have the serial number, it is apparently fine.
But the download size will bite into your quota if you are limited. -
-
Then I am corrected
It's just that a lot of the posted links for Windows downloads are not from legitimate sources.
In a way, the same is for Office, Microsoft allowed a version of it for download (meant for techs and testers), and after removing it, other people still kept it up... for a while. -
hey guys is xps 1647 i5 with the 4670 1gb considered high end? i mean will it last through the games of the next year or so? and what are ur views on the pc game the last remnant? i know,im late in playing it. thx, cheers

After considering a VAIO EB Series for quite a while, I finally decided upon the Dell XPS 1647. The deciding factor for me was the 1600x900 resolution, whereas my options on the VAIO were 1366x768 (horrifying) or 1920x1080 (for the young with perfect eyes).
I went with the i5 540M, 1600x900 and the ATI 5730. From what I have been reading, can I assume that throttling will not be a problem with my hardware selections? Uses will be primarily web, email, music and World of Warcraft. I expect I will receive the 90W power adapter.
And lastly, I am a borderline neat freak, and I acknowledge that finger prints will be an issue. I have been looking for some type of adhesive pads to attach to the palm rest areas, but have thus far been unable to find anything. Is anyone aware of palm rests compatible with the 1647? -
I pulled the trigger on the XPS 1647 with the i5 and the ati 4670. The laptop is great, but, and this is a huge but, the fan can get really annoying. The fan is on low the majority of the time, but every hour or so it speeds up for a few minutes. I spend most of my time in the library so the fan noise is really obvious. I hope that there will be a fix for this issue. I'm still debating whether to send the laptop back or not. Does anyone know if this is also a problem with the studio 15?
-
i'm pretty sure dell medialess batch of system will be shipped with a data safe local apps to burn the factory image onto the disc when you first received your system. did you try that ?
-
I don't want to burn my own disc, so that I can restore Windows to how it was when I first got it - System Restore does that, if I wanted it, which I don't.
I am sure nobody here wants some software... we want the OS CD. -
hi i jut got my xps 1647 and i noticed that the temp of the i5 430m was up to 55 dgrees.is that ok or is it to high? plus its on a cooler at this temp

Is anyone having an issue where the usb ports keep themselves off after waking up? e.g. place the computer to sleep, then when you wake it up, plug in a usb wireless mouse or any other device that requires power and it won't work.

Hi guys ........... I'm a new user to NR.com ....joined just coz i ordered DELL Studio XPS 1647 2 days back.....delivery date is 22/10......config is 15.6" Edge to Edge Full High Definition display, i5-460m TB upto 2.8Ghz, 1gb ATI 565v, 4GB DDR3 RAM, 9Cell lithium battery with 90W adaptor ....... any suggestions
-
anyone else think that the 900p is kinda dissapointing? and can dell upgrade it for extra cash? -
I went with the 1600x900 because to me 1920x1080 on a 15.6" screen is simply too tiny to comfortably view (the fonts). My current computer is 1440x900 and I'm quite happy with that resolution, so 1600x900 was the natural choice.
On a 1920x1080, for me, reading text simply is not comfortable. Also the 5730 video card cannot really drive games at high settings at 1920x1080 as effectively as it can at 1600x900. -
