The RGB screen is long gone. The only way you can get it is via outlet or ebay.

    1645 = quad core = i7 7xx, 8xx, or 9xx
    1647 = dual core = i7 6xx or i5 4xx, 5xx

There are no sound options, just onboard sound.

    No more RGB LED

It should let you at least choose between 1080p and 900p, that I'll admit is kind of wierd. It's possible that they're trying to deplete 900p stock prior to the release of the rumored XPS 15.

This thread is very helpful for doing Clean Installs:
    Dell System Recovery Guide

And, you can request your BackUp Disks, HERE

I dumped McAfee (been an issue for me in the past), and installed MSE for AV Protection & ran with Windows own Built-In Firewall, works just fine on my 1647 ~ Light & smooth.

Sorry for asking a question that probably has long ago been answered, but what happened to the RBG screen? Is there something that replaces it? (I have the RBG LED display and love it, except for the battery life drainage!)

They quit making RGBLED screens over a year ago. The rumor (a widespread, reasonable rumor) is that the RGBLED's increased power draw over the WLED was one of the major factors contributing to the throttling problem that older versions (and some isolated cases even now) of the XPS16 experienced.

Asus G73JW has a GT460M, and it's totally out of the XPS 15/17s league.

For those interested in the XPS 17 anyway, don't expect it to have a way better GPU than the XPS 15's potential GT435M (sucks!) or unlikely GT445M (good, but heat?). Look at Studio 14 vs 15 vs 17 for example. But the rumour did hint at some superiority in the 17 version, in GPU VRAM, HDD capacity, etc.

i just ordered a xps 16 1645 last friday! expected delivery date... 21/10/2010

Well, before ordering, i had next to no knowledge on laptops or computer lingo for that matters. It's only after 2 days of intense review reading I realize that the amazing RGBLED isn't equipped on my computer!! arrgg what a disapointment... when i watched a review on youtube the guy was drooling over his display and I thought that's what i was getting. Since I am a animation/art student I do like my screen to be as good as it can be.
Then I see that mine is 945p as well, and wasn't given an option for a better screen I am more disapointed. However, it's not enough for me to cancel my order... so hey guys, it's still a great laptop right? I am pretty much buying it as a desktop replacement.

I do got some questions, does it comes with cables/ cds? mine should have a 130 watt adaptor rightt??

I read that some of you talk about BIOS like A11 or A12 or something. I take it when I get my laptop and go to dell support i get to choose/download the approiate in a list?

also, i think first thing i want to do is to get the laptop to optimal before i start actually using it.

I read that someone suggest doing a clean install, which I am excited about. I hate bloatwares!!

Now what's the safest, best way to do this. I read that someone download a Window 7 OS... do i get the valid lincense number from the dell laptop and validate it?

    Or

    One of you linked http://forum.notebookreview.com/dell/453164-dell-system-recovery-guide.html
the full OS recovery seems simple and don't require any downloading and additional dvds.... the post however is 9 months old. Just wanna make sure both the method is still safe and applicatable.

    ANy help would be appreciated

EDIT: from my understanding the recovery isn't exactly a clean install right? so I need to get my hands on a W7 dvd, figure out the key dell gave me, validate it. clean install windows, then install Drivers from dell resource disc? Or download drivers on dell website?? (is everything automated like windows update??) OMG so much questions.

I'm from Canada. if I call Dell and ask for a window7 cd, would they give it to me? WHo do I talk to? customer service? sales representative?

i have experienced some problems with the intel 6200 wireless card. the computer sometimes goes disconnected for 5-10 minutes while the network is functioning properly.
i also have a dell d430 with old intel 4965 card. dell d430 is connected to network while studio 1647 couldnt find my own network.
i dont know if it is a driver issue(dell driver) or the power option( windows power save mode). its kinda sad to see intel products gone down in quality.

The WLED screens are not as good as the RGBLED in color gamut, but are on par with it for everything else, and are still well above-average for laptop displays. I personally love my 900p, it's not 1080 but it's alot better than the disappointing current 'standard' of 768p. Also, the 5730 is really pushing itself to run modern games at 1080p, where it will have no problem playing at 900p. Though I may be a bit biased :p

lol i guess what i really wanted was reassurance haha. i can't wait. I need the thing for school work... a bit of animation in Maya (not rendering, school has a monster render farm and gave each students each 4 terabytes :D )

I guess i want to do a bit of gaming (tho i get tired of games pretty quickly)
also what kind of anti virus/ security would you recommend. (free, or at little cost) Ive always used desktop and it get bogged down so badly by malware and junk files...

If you're looking for free, the Microsoft Security Essentials is actually a quite good anti-virus/spyware, and the built-in Windows Firewall is adequate. Personally, I prefer the Kaspersky suite, but it's paid software.

Seems only Dell laptops have the RGBLED screen

Does the Kaspersky slow down Pc
i have Avg(free) & seems to work just fine

trying to understand why Kaspersky is better

So it only happens to i7 quad core+RGBLED?

I'm not saying it's immune to throttling, because throttling is primarily caused by heat, but the i5's are the most efficient processors and the RGBLED is a power hungry display!
i7Quad + 4670 + RGBLED is most prone to throttling.

You shouldn't need one. Since you posted in the 1647 thread, that means you purchased a dual core cpu with a decent TDP.

hi does anyone notice that theres not much difference between the 768p and 900p displays in dell speciffically? coz my buddy bought the new macbook pro with 1440x900 and the display looks awesome compared to my 1600x900p. is it just me or is that true that dells screen doesnt match up to the new macbooks?

well i really hope that someone would prove me wrong so that my mind would stop seeing it as worse than the macbooks and start seeing it as better ;).
but generally it seems good at times like when im playing games but i would advise u to do more research if one reason ur buying it for is the display. i liked the high res. thats y i bought it but now im not too sure about it.

Your system does not need the 130w adapter, although having more room doesn't hurt. It is up to Dell to decide.

Dell is replacing my XPS 1647 because the keyboard is scratching the screen. I've never used one of those keyboard clothes before but I guess I'm going to have to start once I get the new laptop.

Now there are definitely people on NBR that could define throttling much better than I ever could (like unclewebb), but I'll give it a go  .

Throttling is a mechanism employed by the computer (usually in a laptop; and I believe by the BIOS) to lower CPU or the GPU clock rates (their speeds/how well they can perform) when the laptop's components either go over a pre-ordained heat threshold or a pre-ordained power threshold (AC/DC draw). That threshold is usually already set by original manufacturer of the component, like Intel (for the CPUs) or ATI/Nvidia (for GPUs), but the laptop manufacturer, like Dell, can set their own thresholds on top of those if they wanted. Dell did so in this case (for whatever the reason may be) for both the GPU and the CPU. Dell set a thermal threshold for the GPU, so if it reached a pre-ordained temperature of like 84C, the GPU would clock down, causing performance issues in-game or otherwise (GPU-throttling). They also set a power threshold/scheme which mainly governed the CPU, so when the CPU (in addition to the RGBLED and GPU) was often starved for power provided by the measly 90w adapter, the threshold/scheme would attempt to "mask" (or protect :p ) the inadequate power by lowering CPU clocks (CPU-throttling). Now it's a lot more complicated than simply lowering the CPU clock, but it effectively did the same thing by causing in-game slowdowns and general performance issues that shouldn't have been occurring. You buy an i7 hoping it would run as fast as it was advertised, and then you find out it's running like a pentium processor because it's being starved for power...not a good feeling :) .

In the cases of the 1640, 1645, and, maybe even the 1647, they suffered from both GPU and CPU throttling. Though things are much better now. That's why, after what seemed like months of consideration (or ignorance :) ), Dell finally decided to implement this 90w-130w adapter exchange program, because they know they screwed up (starved the heck outta the machines). Even with the 130w, though things are better, they aren't as good as they should be, as minor throttling still occurs, especially for those with the RGB-i7-4670 combo. The refreshed 5730-wled combos don't seem to throttle at all compared to the previous RGB-i7-4670 combos. So with the configuration you have, I don't think you should have any problems at all.

    Hope that helps.

Unlikely. They'll probably come out at around the same time. The Alienwares will likely offer the 2820QM and 2920XM first, but that doesn't mean the other lines will have to wait for sandy.

Nope, no K for laptops. If you want an unlocked processor, you'll need to spend the grand on the X version. Some people may actually spring for it though, as from what I've read, the CPUs are so locked down that non- K or X versions will not be overclockable at all, whether desktop or mobile version.
