You will have to try this. I don't see why it would not work since you're using 1:1 pixels leaving a black border around the screen for the un-utilised portion.

Although many have received the M1530 with a LED LCD nobody has yet written a review about.

    Calling for volunteers!:)

This thread has pictures M1530 with LED LCD if you're interested.

Thanks Rhodan...The reason I asking about this is because I got Dell to replace my laptop with an LED and I wanted to know how much better it is than the LG screen I got them to replace last week.

A little while ago I took my M1530 WSXGA+ LG to a local store to compare it with LED Screen. The LEDs were brighter than the LG but the higher resolution is more important to me.

    Hey Rhodan,

Great thread you've started here. There is another LCD screen model for the WXGA+ (1440x900) that has the hardware ID LPLDF00 with part number KR515. It's an excellent screen with no grain (I currently own this one). It's shown as "...LGP, V2" in the service tag so maybe it's an updated version of the XP059 one. Cheers.

Thanks for the updated information. I've added this to the chart.

Seems like Dell is changing part numbers for existing parts.

I keep reading of people reporting their temps. Is there an applet installed the XPS that displays the temps of various components?

Anyone else can confirm this part number?

Bchen06, it's not that I doubt the info but sometimes there's more that 1 part number with similar descriptions included in the system.

    For example mine shows...

XR860 MODULE..., LIQUID CRYSTAL DISPLAY..., 15.4WSXGA+, SAMSUNG..., M1530
RW985 LIQUID CRYSTAL DISPLAY..., 15.4WSXGA+, VIDEO ELEC. STDS. ASSOC...., TLF, SAMSUNG...

...Yet is has a LG LCD in it...

I have an LED on the way now. Should get it late this week or early next. Would be more than happy to share my opinion once I receive it. Based on this thread, it looks like the only manufacturer of LED is Chi Mei correct? I dig LG, but as long as there are no grains I am ok with whatever. Admit, I am sorta paranoid now.

I already read that, but I don't exactly know what to do and I don't want to mess it up as I've only had the laptop for 4 days...

I've read that it may be a problem of the UPEK Driver (fingerprint).

    Has anyone upgraded succesfully?

Many have installed SP1 and some have experienced problems. You need to review the list of drivers in the knowledge base article and confirm you are up to date.

Is there a way to get non-Samsung LCD on M1530 if you opt for WUXGA screen ? Mine shows as Samsung SEC3255 under Hardware ID. I tried comparing it side by side with my M1330 LED screen and to be honest didnt see huge difference between two. It is little bit grainy compared to M1330 LED but apart from that there is no other issue with M1530 screen. Should I consider bugging DELL for this ?

It's all up to you. If you think you'll be happy with it, keep it. But if you think the slight graininess will bug you, replace it.

And getting a non-Samsung screen is luck of the draw. You might end up with a better or worse screen.

At this time the only WUXGA screen reported to be available in the M1530 is the Samsung SEC3255. If you like your screen and it works for then I would recommend you start enjoying you new M1530 and live on... :)

It's 15.4" to 17". The main difference as more to do with how much features are cramed in the laptop. The 17" laptops are usually much thicker and heavier.

The Dell kiosks here in Canada do have the XPS line on demo. They have a few more laptop but I didn't really pay attention to anything else but the XPS last time I visited.

I have the 1920x1200 LCD and I have to say, it is VERY nice, although with my not-so-great eyes, it probably would've been better if I had gotten a smaller native resolution. I set it to 1440x900 and I think the quality was still great, plus I could read text. I am not in front of it at the moment, but I will say this, unless you are a really (and I mean REALLY) picky person on quality, I do not think you'd notice a difference between 1920x1200 and 1440x900, when using a 1920x1200 LCD. The only thing I am getting annoyed at is when Vista constantly nags me every time I boot up that the screen could be better if I set it to its native resolution. I gave in for now and am using 1920x1200.

Edit: +1 Rep for this Thread. Very handy for new users. (I'm a techy and came here to answer questions for others and the upfront knowledge in post #1 is a great reference)

When the 1920x1200 came out I thought that would be great to have more screen space. But then I looked at my 1680x1050 and realized that from 5 feet away I can barely read the fonts and I decided that was it for me. You need a good vision to use such high resolution screen on a 15.4" format. Sadly I had to start wearing reading glasses in the last few year (age does catch up) and for me this would not be comfortable.

    Thanks for the rep!

I've got nothing against that. In fact I would like that option, but I don't understand why they don't offer Vista 64 as an option. Seems strange to me.

I've also heard that they fingerprint reader doesn't work in Vista 64. Any truth to this?

Driver not compatible with 64-bit. Companies have not offered 64-bit Vista yet. It is not yet time for it to ascend over 32-bit. Were getting there, but not quite there.

Not true anymore. The drivers are available and the download is available from the maker of the software. (around 51mb download)

See this thread, the line you'll be interested in is step 3.7.

I think the main reason it does not ship with the 64bit version of Vista is the cost of support. IMHO most buyers would go for the 32bit version. By offering the 64bit version to customers Dell would have to offer support for it which might not be financially profitable.

On another subject, I've added a new link to a great photo story from the Dell factory in Ireland.

I think that's supposed to be DW306. At least that's what it says on my packing list.

The coin trick didn't work for me. I fixed it by just setting the notebook on the edge of a desk letting the unbalanced side hang off the edge and lightly put pressure down on it. Viola. If you do this use some common sense and don't throw a lot of muscle into it -- the chassis is aluminum after all.

I am sure there are articles on it, but its really quite easy. Assuming you are not planning on re-installing Windows Vista, all you need to do is go into Computer Management (within Vista), go to Disk Management, right-click on the C:\ Partition and select "Shrink Volume" This will free up more than enough space on the drive and leave you with a blank section of the drive in which you can install Ubuntu 8.04 on.

The only thing i've had issues on with Ubunto 8.04 was the mouse and there is a good thread on what to add to the /boot/grub/menu.lst file so when you boot up the Touchpad works as expected. I will find it and post it back here.

EDIT: Here's the thread on the touchpad - http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=737060&page=2

The service tag on my in-transit M1530 shows a different part number for the display, not listed in the FAQ. I also did a search of this forum and saw no reference to this part number...

X167G LIQUID CRYSTAL DISPLAY..., 15.4WSXGA+, TLF, SAMSUNG..., V2

Looks like they added another PN for the Samsungs, but I don't have the notebook in-hand yet.

    Hardware ID is SEC3350...the Samsung

So both new Dell part numbers X167G and X174G are for existing Samsung LCD panels.

    Thanks for the info.
