hi, thx trebuin for the guide.
just want to ask, i've just installed vista x64 home premium on my 1330.
what i notice is, it boot slower than the x86 home premium. in x86 it boot only 5 bar, in x64 it boot 11 bar. it's not annoying, but just curious why is it slower.
    my spec
    t8100
    2gb ram
    160gb hdd
    8600GS

    thx before ^^

Probably Vista has not optimized its boot sequence yet. Every time you do a reinstall, you have to wait a few boots for Vista to optimize itself

Well, it seems that Dell has finally started providing drivers themselves to call the m1330 fully 64-bit capable. This includes the following:

    nVidia Drivers
    Fingerscanner drivers
    Fingerscanner software!

Dell still has not provided a soundblaster audigy MB 64-bit driver set.

What version is the UPEK software? Dell technical update says it's 5.6.2 and we already are using 5.8.2, from UPEK, so there would be no point upgrading anyway.. unless it's for some addiotional functionality/customisation provided by dell..

    Hi guys.

I've just been reviewing the instructions from the OP and thought I'd share possible corrections given Dell's recent release of more drivers/apps (as of Oct 22 08). This is NOT tested as yet.

    Step 7 (Install Dell Notebook....):

This is now released as R171692. Says it includes Microsoft fixes 936710, 938929, 93707 (missing digit - they did a typo), and 936003.

The Microsoft fixes mentioned in the OP are all in SP1 so hopefully all you need now is R171692.

    Step 8 (Fingerprint Reader Install):

The application is now released as R186441.
The driver is now released as R173506.

Hopefully these remove the need for the other websites.

    Step 9 (Install Quickset):

This is now available as R182249.

    Hope this helps!

OK I went through all the instructions here, with my modifications (see a few posts above). Everything's worked fine EXCEPT for Bluetooth.

BIOS is checked to ensure it's set for all, and I'm using the latest R140135.exe file. As others have reported it's asking me to hit Fn+F2 or hit the switch, but neither does anything. No sign of the Bluetooth icon at any time (including boot). Microsoft Update has been run to completion.

Looking at Device Manager or PC Wizard 2008 I don't see it at all.

My m1330 has the Bluetooth 355 module and it was running fine prior to Vista 64 install.

Anyone else seen this and solved it?

    I think I've solved it.

From memory, I did it by installing the software (not the drivers) from R140135/3100_216/Win64/Inst.exe.

It too asked to press Fn + F2 towards the end, but by then it had added the Bluetooth icon in the system tray (with it turned off). Right-clicking it enabled Bluetooth.

I wasn't entirely sure the correct Bluetooth driver was installed (it said it was a Microsoft one) so I then went to Device Manager, found the Bluetooth driver, and updated it, pointing to R140135/3100_216/Win64. After this the driver is Broadcom 6.0.1.2500 from 10Dec2006.

The result of all this is that I suddenly had an "Unknown Device" and I saw SigmaTel crash. A re-install of the soundcard drivers fixed that up.

So now, fingers crossed, all is working!

Hi, I've noticed that people said 2D performance is better, but I'm running Server 2008 x64, which is essentially the same as Vista x64, but 2D performance is much worse than Vista Ultimate x32. This is especially noticeable in Flash (watching web vids like Youtube etc full screen) or PowerDVD. Vimeo's HD files barely run at all - incredibly choppy even if I'm plugged in. Before, on Vista Ultimate x32, I could run these w/ no problems at all even on battery power. I'm using the latest 8400M GS Dell drivers that came out a few weeks ago (R200275, forceware 176.44), and I've also tried using modded drivers from Nvidia's site. Nothing seems to help the performance. Even the native microsoft vid drivers work a lot better at driving web videos than the nvidia drivers (but of course, you don't get Aero). Is anyone else experiencing this? I just got the x64 Vista Ultimate disc from Dell, so I'm trying to see if changing from Server 2008 x64 to Vista x64 might get rid of some of these problems. I would really appreciate it if someone could specifically look at 2D performance (w/ full screen web videos, PowerDVD, etc). My 3D performance doesn't seem to be affected, but I don't play games so I might not notice. Anyone have any insight? I know that there was a comparison out there that compared Server 2008 x64 to the other OS's and saw that it actually had better 2D performance, but mine is terrible right now. Should I try switching to Vista Ultimate x64?

    Thanks!

    Hi..great Post....here.
after upgrade my m1330 to 4gb Ram, I installed also Vista x64...GREAT ¡ ¡ No problem with any drivers...( from Dell´s driver page..), also at video card..ndivia .. using last x64 from laptopvideo2 179.28 for Windows Vista 64bit. GREAT performance compared with vista 32.

Everthing is working fine, and the only headache was whith I8Kfan...but now it´s working pretty well (just...find how to work not certificated driver) ... and Ithink it´s "cooler" system, on Vistax64, form me, the idde GPU tempature are appreciably lower than Vista x32.

    Thanks all.

just ordered my Vista64 by sending a pm to Chris at the Dell Community Forum as per people's suggestion here. Allow 3-5 days for delivery but otherwise no problems. Will update once I do the install -- again, using this thread as my guide. Thanks to all who have contributed.

Dell is now selling XPS M1330s with 8GB of RAM and Vista 64 on them.

Does that mean that Dell will now support Vista 64 on our laptops if we call in under warranty?

Up to now I've been afraid that if I have ANY problem the first thing they will make me do is put Vista x86 back on my machine.

I've found a lot of great info in this thread and want to thank everyone.

I still had an issue with audio not working w/ 64 Ultimate. The SRS drivers did not help either. I finally was able to get everything working, and sorry if repeating a known fix. I downloaded he vista x86/32-bit drivers from the dell website and uninstalled the audio driver from the device manager and all SRS drivers/files also. When i ran the setup, it said it was x86/x64 vista... it installed and after a restart all audio works perfect.
    Hope this helps someone...

It's very simple to install Windows. Search the forums for "Vista Clean Install", there are tons of threads on the subject.
