And then on the next start the magnification goes back to 200%. And again to 100%, and back again.... I'd really like to stop this, it was not like this in the beginning!

    Definitely no pen support.

I just got my service replacement model in. Tablet issue has been fixed, charged battery capacity is reporting a higher 36.9 but still no support for my dell stylus which worked fine with the venue 8 pro.

Someone should ask DELL why pen support was supported for first batch but not after that.

must be in the first batch like mine. Mine works too but not that great.

From what people are reporting on here models that are being shipped now have NO support at all. Tablet wont even recognize.

And now we have confirmation in another post from Dell direct that it DOES NOT support pen input. So it seems that put it in on the first
batch but took pen support out going forward now.

On the official Dell page all mention of Pen support has been removed and doesnt even list a pen as an accessory anymore.

Playing with the machine a little more, I'm getting quite used to the keyboard though not being a 100% touch typist I struggle with the pinky accuracy and quick stabs at the backspace/delete buttons, enter, and shifts are not as intuitive as with a classic keyboard. Again, the autospell of the software keyboard would be quite handy...

In other news I have the HID-compliant pen listed in the device manager though no pen to test it with. What does it being listed in the devices mean for the support? Is this just the drivers or do I actually have the hardware? Is there another non-dell pen I can use?

The sporadic loss of touch on the screen seems to have disappeared, though the Logitech Ultrathin Mouse T630 is now losing connection (though I understand this is a fault of the mouse itself).

Finally, how are you guys checking the capacities of your batteries? Is there a standard utility to get a baseline?

UPDATE: full charge battery capacity is 37,140mWh, designed capacity at 40,000mWh, based on BatteryInfoView. What is this Dell utility I see people referencing here for the battery check?

PS they keyboard is OK on a table, TERRIBLE for typing on your lap on a couch.

The My Dell app is what I've been using should come up if you type it in search. I too see pen in devices wish I new if it was disabled at the software or hardware level but no luck for me.the keyboard has seemed to get a lot better or me too.I actually think its a problem that was blown out of proportion, its basically a Surface keyboard with a much larger trackpad a full laptop mode for actual use on a lap and a larger surface area, they both require some getting used to but you should know that going in.

Have had the the XPS 11 for a month now, replaced my 4th gen Retina iPad and my E6410 (still use with dock and dual screen desk setup). I cannot commend the build quality and overall feel of this machine enough, from the other devices I have handled it is unmatched.

I have a few questions for the community:

I am having intermittent unresponsive screen issues, they occur about once every other day when waking from sleep or changing modes e.g. laptop to stand mode. if this were to happen more often it would be frustrating. do yall think this is a serious issue? any fix?

I installed and used chrome for the first week of owning my xps and the performance of chrome was horrible. I enabled the hidef screen setting to help with scaling, but there was glitches I've never seen with chrome. Has anyone had the same experience? maybe there's some settings i could tweak to get normal chrome performance.

Also has anyone found a snug-fitting sleeve or case yet?

Supposedly Dragon is going to be standard now on a lot of windows 8.1 laptops coming from all different manufactures.

I'm noticing on my new replacement model the touhscreen randomly becoming unresponsive and sometimes the screen itself having trouble resuming from sleep. other times the keyboard has been unresponsive after resuming from sleep and I've been locked out from signing in until rebooting.

As for a case I've tried the Hex cases for macbook air 11"they fit pretty snug and are fairly thick but are really protective.

Since I have the laptop for the past month I think I heard my fan come on once or twice.

I basically use it for word files and browsing, not much you tube or anything like that so that can play into me not hearing it that much.

On normal browsing and emailing the fan will never come up. It's coming up on video playback, but never actually disturbing. The idea to blow the air out of the hinges is just perfect. I am amazed about the effort Dell spent on the build quality, and their lazyness on the software side...

I am also having trouble with turning on from sleep mode. If I open the display in laptop mode, often the power button will light up, but the display remain dark.

iDevice software quality is still unmatched. W8.1 is just a very weak copy. Some really good ideas, but none developed to the end, even not speaking about iOS perfection.

Windows 8.1 is not a copy at all. From the Enterprise standpoint, iOS and OS X is very weak from the Systems Management.

Can anyone else confirm to have this additional plug shown in the video at 0:50min ( http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mouhIXLWWd4)?

I have contacted Dell sales support, and they don't know nothing about it ...

As an IT professional I'm happy to spend extra on my laptop which i why i buy XPS. I currently have an xps 17 which i have found to be a great PC other than the extreme fan noise and lacking widi support because it has a 3d screen even though it was advertised as supporting widi so my opinion of Dell has been relatively good until now.

After a bit of a delay in shipping my xps 11 arrived yesterday direct from Dell Australia. Before i go into detail on a public forum I think i will wait until Dell advise what the process is before i blow any leverage i have with their customer care team. Given I'm a returning customer they have been minding my $1400 while i wait 3 weeks for it to ship (during which time the CPU has become superseded) i expect some kind of remedy beyond 'i'll see if i can get the unit replaced for you. It usually takes 10 or so working days to process'. I'll happily drop them in the and get a refund if i dont get a more favorable response.

for those out there posing questions here are some answers
there is no haptic feedback on the keyboard. it clicks and its obviously software driven because the clicks lag half the time especially on the first few keystrokes after the laptop has been busy (ie login password will make its first click when i am hitting the 3rd or 4th key)
mine came with only a 3 prong type power cable and a user manual looking booklet (thats literally all thats in the box other than the laptop itself) . i didnt get that wall mount in the video
typing quickly on the keyboard is certainly possible but not 'fast' fast. my biggest problem is the top outer keys. i find myself having to hit esc or del with extra vigor and the second or 3rd attempt before it 'clicks'
i have used it for about 4 hours. the fan came on for all of 1 or 2 mins when it was under heavy load running backup imaging.
if you could take my anger with Dell out of the equation i would say its probably a very nice bit of hardware (in a brand new state).

Does anyone know if Dell ever use refurbished parts on new machines??? i just read on various forums that people have been getting replacements because of various issues all over the world for quite a while now. I cannot find any refurbs on sale and i doubt dell just throws the returned units out. It begs the question why has mine arrived in the state it is in??? Dell???

    Hi everyone,

So I'm planning to get the XPS 11 soon... just want to know what I'll be getting into.

-Tablet screen issues in some cases.(moving the screen into tablet mode, it goes dark).
    -Touch layer gets disabled randomly.
    -no active digitizer support.

    am I missing anything else?

oh, also for those who've installed Bluestacks... how well does it work compared to the tablet interfaces of other Android tablets. of course it wont be exactly the same, but what are the drawbacks? and how long does it take to switch between them?

    Hello,
Great thread. I have been following it since the original thread before anyone owned an XPS 11.
I am currently selling my Dell XPS 11. Intel Core i5-4210Y 4GB 128GB . Had it since December. Warranty is good until 12/15/2014. Can be transferred to new owner.
Great machine just never used it. I have too many gadgets and need to get rid of some. Probably has 10 hours of usage. In excellent condition with original box.
Asking $975 shipped. Paid $1249.99 plus tax when I purchased it.
Let me know if anyone is interested or if you have questions.
    thanks

That may not be the answer you'd like to hear, but I don't see much benefit from this effort. If you install Start8 (I think it was quite cheap after the 30day trial) you get the full desktop support just as in Windows 7, but on a more modern system. In particular the startup time of Windows 8 is significantly better than in 7.

And then I cannot imagine that 7 in tablet mode will be too much fun. What's the point of buying a convertible then?

In my opinion 8 is quite ok after you have survived the first two weeks of hatred. Metro is for tablet mode, desktop is for laptop mode.

I also have an XPS15 (last year's model without touch), there thanks to Start8 I never use Metro.

Has there been any news regarding the display zoom issue? I had seen several similar posts in the Dell forum for both the XPS11 and XPS12.

But then, since a couple of days, this issue has just gone away from my XPS11  I have no idea what happened in between.

FWIW I ordered a 4300Y 256GB Win8.1 Pro model from the UK Dell Outlet last week. Checking out the history of the machine via its service tag it seems it may have been originally shipped to France in January. There were two 4300Y Pro machines listed, of which I bought one. The other one has also been sold, leaving only lower spec machines still available. They do come up every now and again, so if the new sales channel has dropped the model I suggest you keep an eye on your local Outlet site. I paid £819 with VAT and delivery, which I estimate to be about £300 discount from new. Unfortunately, as there are no new models of this exact spec I can't be precise about the savings.

I became an XPS 11 owner last week, courtesy of a refurb from the UK Dell Outlet. It's the top spec machine, with i5-4300Y, 256GB and Win 8,1 Pro. Here are my views after ~4 days with the machine....

    Negatives :
    - The keyboard surely takes some getting used to, with a slightly higher error rate than normal, but for my needs it is something I can live with given all the positive attributes and that my typing requirements are modest.

    Positives :
    - Size;
    - Weight;
    - Build/finish;
    - (Mostly) Silent running;
    - Dual mode laptop/tablet;
    - The screen is just fabulous. I love the resolution and have the machine set to native resolution and without scaling. While text is undoubtedly small I can read it perfectly well and this is a huge bonus from my point of view. I hate scrolling to see information and having multiple (useful) windows open on the screen at once is wonderful; It beats a mere 1920x1080 into a cocked hat.
    - Battery life seems to be stretching out after a few charging cycles. The last charge lasted 10:21 hours with light use and screen brightness set to a fully satisfactory 3 clicks above the dimmest setting and auto brightness disabled.

Mostly I will be using the machine for undemanding tasks - browsing in the main - plus Office tasks and some photo editing with Lightroom when on the move. I'm not big on mobile gaming, but I tried Asphalt 8 Airborne in tablet mode and it all seemed to run smoothly and without fuss.

So far the more I use the XPS 11 the more pleased I am. My other machine is a Precision M6700, which I bought with the IPS RGB screen for photo editing. I didn't want a machine that big and heavy, but the options at the time for such screen quality in mobile form were thin on the ground. If the M3800 or new XPS 15 had been available they would have been the machines for me, but they simply did not exist. I shall reserve the M6700 for photo work only. For everything else I do the XPS 11 is going to be the far more enjoyable machine to use, even when not travelling. For casual couch surfing and general day to day duties it is superb.

Apart from the keyboard the only other blip is that I did suffer the unresponsive touch screen once so far, which others have commented on, but so far it's only been once in four days and maybe 30+ hours use so not the end of the world.

If you can live with the keyboard I think it's a terrific machine, but for some the keyboard may well prove to be the deal breaker.

This happens to me almost daily. This is already my second xps 11 due to battery issues, and I don't want to have to go through the support process/replacement again. Hoping as well a driver update fixes this issue soon.

Did anyone solve the issue where that you cannot use the XPS11 in tablet mode because when ever you flip into tablet mode the screen goes black.

I have tried updating all the latest Dell drivers (then some)... configuring the XPS not to shut down or go into standby in power options, but I still cannot use it in tablet mode. Seems to be a driver issue because if I uninstall the Intel Drivers it works.. (however keyboard is still active and the touch screen doesn't work)

Tried doing a full reinstall... still same issue.

Thinking of returning it after 2 days... cannot even use it for its basic purpose and I am fed up of Dell issues... (this was a replacement that had awful burn in issues)

Funny thing is if I turn off all standby modes and go into tablet mode (with Intel drivers enabled) music still plays in the background even though the screen goes black.

This has happened to me only once, on the day I received the machine, and I suspect it is because I caught the power button by accident. Having paid more attention to my handling of the machine since there has not been a repeat for the last several days.

On a separate note, but as I'm posting anyway, today I calibrated the display with Spyder 4 Elite and ended up with 99% of the sRGB gamut covered. That's easily good enough for my mobile photographic editing needs.

I do get a perfect 100% from my Dell Precision M6700 with IPS RGB display, but I won't complain about the missing 1% from the XPS 11. I don't believe there are many laptops/tablets that can do better - possibly none in this class of machine.

    Hi Everyone,
Signed up because I bought one of these awesome ultrabooks earlier this year for my wife, along with ordering the Stylus because she wants to do handwriting in tablet mode occasionally.

Took me a long time to finally receive the stylus, knowing full well the outgoing model was dodgy and it was likely unsupported by this model. It was then no surprise that upon unboxing my fresh A01 revision stylus that nothing happened.

Dell are insisting to me that the stylus was compatible and after a battery change, sent me a replacement Stylus.
Again not surprised when the replacement didn't work, Dell are currently researching it and are getting back to me.

In the meantime though, I'd like to post my experience regarding the pen and my experience:

    - I ordered my XPS 11 early Jan in Australia, the unit was built on the 11th so I am a long way off first batches.
    - My System Properties shows my XPS 11 as "Pen and Full Windows Touch Support with 10 Touch Points"
    - My Device Manager shows up a driver has "HID-compliant pen". However when looking at the driver details, it looks to be a generic Microsoft driver. I believe this has nothing to do with the stylus capabilities of the device.
    - My Services page shows the "Touch Keyboard and Handwriting Panel Service" as running and set to "Automatic".

Under these settings, the stylus DOES NOT WORK.

I am however a long time Linux user; not so much the desktop, except for my netbook which seldom gets used.
Booting up a USB giving me a live desktop, I was able to test the touch panel. Finger touch support fully worked using Fedora 20, and again the pen did not work.

Looking at the low level USB devices as well as the XOrg input devices, I stumbled upon (using lsusb -v for anyone curious):
    "SYNAPTICS Synaptics Touch Digitizer V03"
Looking at "xinput list", I was able to verify the Synaptics touchpad and touch digitizer were in fact detected as separate interfaces, In fact under "xinput list", it gave me
    SYNAPTICS Synaptics Touch Digitizer V03
SYNAPTICS Synaptics Touch Digitizer Pen V03

This leads me to believe a stylus IS supported by the XPS 11, but either Dell are not making the Active Stylus to specification, or the drivers for the XPS 11 are simply stripping all pen support.
Under linux I imagine I will need a lot of tweaking to potentially get the pen working, but at least it is an option for me. I can boot onto a USB whenever I want and my settings are saved, however Windows 8.1 is the intended OS.

I am about to try any and EVERY synaptics driver I can get my hand on to confirm if any work with the XPS 11, and possibly the active stylus.
If anyone has an XPS 11 with a working stylus, I would appreciate if you can paste your driver version for "Synaptics HID Device", found in Device Manager. My current version is 17.0.13.0 which does not work.

After going through a couple months with Dell Support about my intermittent unresponsive touch screen / mouse issues and display sleep issue when going from laptop to tablet mode, I figured to try a fix myself.

I took a system state image of my Dell Latitude E6410 Windows 8.1 with Macrium Reflect and restored it to a completely wiped single volume XPS 11. I reinstalled the drivers and the display sleep issue is completely gone and the unresponsive mouse / screen issue has happened only once since the restore. I think Dell's restore image for the XPS 11 has some issues, trying another clean image may help like it has for me. Dell still has a long way to go with the firmware and drivers to get this product where it needs to be.

PS still trying to figure out Intel's Rapid start, has anyone configured the RAID volume and rapid start setup from scratch?

    Hi All, 1st time poster.

Does anyone have an issue with the XPS 11 whereupon you could be working on anything on the desktop (e.g. Word) and for some reason it will keep jumping back to the tile/start screen two or three times in a row? This is really frustrating as I am in the middle of trying to do some degree essays.

Also is it worth buying the more recent synaptics stylus?

    Cheers

Oh and I am completely ignorant of most pc tech speak. :)

The jumping is caused by the windows button on the screen getting stuck. You can confirm this by pressing the volume keys, you'll find they will open up Narrator instead of adjusting the volume, because windows key + volume is a shortcut for accessibility tools.

Just firmly press the windows button on your screen a few times until it stops it and use the volume buttons to confirm its sorted. Mine does this very rarely, occasionally when flipping from Laptop to Tablet mode, I'm guessing because of the strain put on the screen.

If it happens all the time and does not fix itself, contact Dell support.

By Synaptics stylus you mean the newest Dell active stylus? Revision A01? This is still a work in progress; I actually have this exact stylus that I am working with Dell to resolve (abeit very slowly).

Thus far I have confirmed there is no facility for the stylus in the Synaptic drivers, however looks like the Venue 8/11 uses an inbuilt windows driver, which is the one noticed before under "HID Compliant Pen".

I think at this point it's a low level digitizer firmware issue and will probably take them a while to fix. I still however have an open dialogue with Dell support and will post any updates as I get them.

Thanks very much for the reply I'll give it a go re the button getting stuck, however the volume buttons never switch to the accessibility tools so it may be something I need to contact Dell about. Shame about the stylus. That was one of the main reasons I bought the xps11 because I wanted a decent notebook with an active stylus.

    Thanks Again
