Well huh! Soldered!! That sucks.. lol

Well for those wondering about order process times.. I ordered two on 1/31 with estimated ship date of 2/19.. I choose overnight shipping and both systems arrived yesterday.

    Hi all,

I have read through most of this thread and picked up some useful info (like how to disable the auto screen brightness).

However one of our execs has one of these and he's having an issue that I have not been able to resolve. It's dropping the network connection randomly. What we have noticed is that it seems to only do it under load such as streaming video or copying large (greater than 1GB) files on the network.

I have updated the bios and installed the latest intel drivers but it seems to make no difference.

This is the i5/4GB/128GB configuration that you can buy retail at best buy.

    Thanks in advance

No tracking or email yet. Earlier in the day there was a link to Walsh Western on the page but its gone now, but that seems to have no data yet.

    Link is :

    Code:
    http://wwxcom08.walshwestern.com/scripts/cgiip.exe/WService=utrack2_liv_brk/dell5.w?Cust_No=XXXXX&Order_No=YYYYYY

    XXXXX = Customer Number
    YYYYYY = Order Number.

Remove the GB from start of the customer number.

Thanks a lot for the link! Changing the power management setting on the wifi card appears to have done the trick. It's amazin how one hand doesn't know what the other is doing at Dell. I spent an hour with them on the phone last night working on this issue without success.

    Cheers!

Well let see if/when it arrives??? tbh I wouldn't go through this wait again, checking the website everyday just to be disappointed! Let's hope I'm not disappointed when I finally get it. Yes I'll post my findings...

Been using my base model XPS 12 for a few days now and I must say I love It so far! Even sold my Retina MacBook pro to buy it and plan to upgrade the ssd this week to a crucial m4 256gb. I wish I could have gotten a model with 8GB ram but honestly I was to impatient! People have been having issues with the touchpad that I have seen. I too had issues with it not working properly when I would click some things. The tap to click seemed really buggy. I found that the only way to fix this issue is to disable the palm detection in the trackpad settings. You have to be more careful when typing but the issues went away 100% once I disabled this setting and have not returned since. I hope this helps someone!

Well I thought I had lucked out as my system had finally shown as Shipped and I was waiting on a courier reference, Oh how silly of me, the reference never arrived and after phoning Dell Support (after a game of ping-pong transfers) they told me the item I was tracking was the McAfee Internet Security (which is supplied via a digital download so I’m not sure why I need that to appear on Order Support)
So no, I’m still here, waiting until the 10th of sodding April for a system I ordered back in November, and the best Dell Premium Support can do it “track it on our end” and wait for the system to arrive.

Oh no! How disappointing! Yeah my McAfee 'shipped' right away a day or 2 after placing my order, by why they need to mark it as shipped when it's a download I really don't know!

When i ordered mine, i deselected the McAfee option. When you get to the checkout there is the McAfee option and its down as costing 2 pence (lol), i just changed the amount from 1 to 0 and it took it of my order.
    McAfee..... ughhhhh

As it was free I just left it on but then I saw they charged me 2p! That's a wasted 2p ill never get back for something useless ill likely never use.

Dell just emailed me a cryptic message regarding my order delay

    Comments:
Murcielago (XPS12): XPS12 is on WW allocation for all regions. EMEA is currently on 15 days lead time and we are expecting to be on Ext LT for the Qtr. We have supply constraints on the LCD, and Supply globally cannot meet demand.

I had to reply back and request a glossary for the abbreviations!!!!

One minute it's all over the news that touch screen pcs and convertible laptops plus windows 8 is a flop, next they are claiming it's a worldwide demand that can't be met- WHICH IS IT?

    Probably both.
PC makers completely underestimated demand for touch screens, getting customers angry at having to wait monthes to get their order shipped.
Other potential W8 buyers were turned off because even if W8 is in fact an interesting OS without touch, it is much more palatable with touch, which they couldn't experience in most retail stores.

Personnaly I have been ready to buy a new touchscreen notebook since Windows 8 launch. But seeing the super crap offerings (ultra low res awfull tn non-touch screens, touchpads that simply don't work, super slow mechanical hds, keybaords as bad as they ever were), outrageous prices (hello Carbon), monthes long if not year long delays (hello Asus) and monthes-long delivery time I have been hugely turned off and will take my time until the market matures and the prices get realistic.

Regarding touchpad problems, it may not be an ideal solutions for everybody, but I have been using a Logitech rechargeable T650 touchpad with my Windows 8 computers for a few weeks, and it is really quite good once you have gotten used to gestures and positioning. So far I haven't recharged the battery since the initial charging.

Well I tell a lie, this is a replacement, Orginal order was on the 26th November, delivered on the 27th December, returned 31st December as faulty and been waiting ever since for a replacement, the EED is 10th of April (2013 hopefully)

So I emailed Dell asking for tracking info for my XPS12 which was marked as SHIPPED yesterday, turns out its still in China & not likely to get it until Monday, today was my EDD. So that will be 6 weeks & 1 day from when I ordered it...

Yey, replacement touchscreens got here earlier than scheduled, and with my 3rd screen touch actually works, and no dead pixels :)
I still get a warning in the event viewer about "a multi touch unit reported inconsistent contact information", and a driver that fails to load, but at least it works in the GUI now.

How do I disable autocorrecting brightness?

The whole global supply is the OEM's fault.

Microsoft said that make more premium systems as Windows 8 is touch friendly, the OEM's go "Naww, lets not" and NOW the OEM's go "Unexpected demand", "Supply Shortages" etc etc etc, I just want the machine I ordered back in November to arrive that isn't faulty :(

The rubber coating is starting to peel off my XPS, that coating is NOT DURABLE at all... It will probably be gone by the end of my warranty period.

I wish I could but the only camera I have is my iPhone and that won't focus on it. I first noticed it about a week after owning the system around the USB ports, and I hardly use them. I took it to school with me yesterday and it was in my bag with my books and a small bit of the coating got rubbed off on the left corner and the front, right under the track pad. I am not happy that it is already peeling.

That's where part of the problem lies, I did not. But the peeling around the USB is the real issue (and was not a result of no sleeve/ bag, just normal use) because that is going to be used over and over again and should be able to handle that and not peel. I'll talk to Dell about the problem when they set up a dispatch for my touchpad.

So my estimated ship date is supposed to be 18/02 with an EDD of 21/02, I have contacted Dell as my system is still in pre-production and apparently I have to wait another 15 days before more touch screens arrive. I don't know whether this is 15 days or 15 business days but either way it's just a royal pain in the backside as I just don't have a PC to use for my business at the moment. And the 15 days is not even an EDD, once the screens arrive I have to pray one gets allocated to me then wait for the system to be built and another week for delivery! I'm starting to wish I had just walked into a store and bought a different laptop which I could have had same day without all this inconvenience. I wouldn't mind so much but people who ordered just a few days before me have already had their systems shipped and US orders seem to be being filled without any delays at all. And the worst thing of all is that Dell have communicated NOTHING to me i have had to harass them for information they should be providing me without me having to ask! I am NOT a happy customer right now!!

You need to get someone to confirm what the delay is, when the screens will be delivered, and that one will be allocated to you.

    BWAHAHAHAHAHAAHAHAHA

    Funny.

I was promised a £50 voucher for the inconvenience of my FIRST delay, That was more than 80 days ago. I'm having to wait over 100 days for my XPS and when I asked about the £50 I was promised they said "We have no record of that, sorry we are unable to offer you that"

Anyone want to join me throwing bricks through Dell's Irish HQ's?

Sorry you guys are getting the royal run around in buying something.

Over here in the US Best Buy now has these units available for sale and immediate pickup.

Guessing that maybe Dell has committed to delivering to Best Buy and is now messing with people who have ordered stuff a while back.

It is only the base version available at Best Buy ... but still a very sweet machine.

Only problems I experienced were the display brightness thing ( fixed by adjusting power settings ) and wireless problem ( again fix documented here in this thread ).

I would prefer 8 gb of RAM but win 8 seems to keep 1 gb of RAM available "just in case" and adjusts how much it can cache to keep 1 gb of RAM available.

Downloading virtual box and a Linux 6.3 iso so about to see how that works.

    Good luck all!

I realised if i order it through my company, i can get the new cpu and 3 yr warranty (instead of 2yr) for £5 less than i was paying before!
It'll mean waiting longer, but for £5 less, i cant not do it! :))
