No way! You are one of the very lucky ones! Thats the same system I ordered on 6th Jan - Still haven't received it! I saw on the dell website that i5,8,256, system turn around time was down to a few days? I called Dell and they could't really explain it. They have since removed that system option....I'm not impressed and the wait has ruined my experience and all the problem reported on here has left me very apprehensive and wondering whether I have made the right choice? I'm half expecting the system to be faulty when I recieve it. I know people only usually post when they have problems but there does seem to be a lot of common problems on here...

Mine shipped on the estimated DELIVERY date and arrived 2 days later - I'm not going to quibble over two days! That was for the i7, 8GB RAM, 256SSD. Had a suspect touchpad when it arrived on the Thursday, phoned Dell and a technician came and replaced it on Friday - everything works perfectly now. Very pleased with Dell's support.

It could be the unit itself - I was very sceptical that a new touchpad would resolve the issues I was experiencing with my new system, everything worked perfectly when the Cypress drivers were uninstalled (although obviously without any gestures etc), and stopped working with the drivers installed. Since it worked without drivers I assumed that it was definitely a driver issue, however Dell sent a tech out and replaced the touchpad which now works perfectly.
I assume the Dell support suggested this but have you tried disabling the palm reject feature? That might explain why the touchpad isn't working after you've been typing.

Looks more like a fixable software bug than an unfixable hardware problem, which in a way is reassuring if Dell and Microsoft work on a fix.
What you could perhaps try if you have access to driver setup is to completely uninstall it, reboot and reinstall it.

Yeah I've disabled palm rejection before and that didn't solve the issue. Even running XPS L321X drivers for the touchpad didn't solve it. I just find it weird how they keyboard and other buttons can effect the touchpad and have it not be a driver problem. I guess it doesn't hurt to try a replacement touchpad though!

Oh ok thanks...my spec is the same as yours and I ordered 6 days after you so hopefully mine will go into production soon aswell.

I am happy for you, let us know how long it takes to arrive. I did read somewhere that dell was waiting on a shipment of touch screens in first week of Feb so hopefully things are moving now!

Did you get an email to say that its changed from being 'pre production' to 'in production'?

Mine went into production today, no email. Dell will only email you when it ships.

However I'm wondering if mine might be a bit delayed if Chinese New Year affects it.

KingChris and DinoDonis, I assume you both ordered through the consumer site and not the business side?

If so, I'll be super pissed.

Enjoy your machines, I'll be playing with my cardboard box.

Hi, Just joined the forum. got my Duo12- 3 days ago. Out of the box the track pad loose (disbonded) and does not operate the cursor, Contacted Dell immediately, told them the packageing was fine, hadnt been dropped etc, they requested pics which i sent, then heard nothing. I have been chasing them, just get, 'sorry im out of the office'. Managed to get a customer service guy yesterday who rang around, they found the engineering dept looking into it, said it will take days for me to get a reply. Terrible customer service. I had very bad experience with dell 10 years ago and vowed never to buy another Dell. Didnt learn my lesson!
Dell state they have never ever heard of a track pad loose on their machines, i googled it and there are cases of it happening, see here another guy with identical problem to mine, Dell XPS 15 L521x touchpad issue - or is this normal for this laptop? - YouTube cheers tim

Hi tim, well this clearly is an issue I've seen it at least 3 times on this forum alone, I've even seen a professional reviewer with an xps with a loose trackpad. I expect the dell representative you spoke to was just a call centre employee, in my experience they have little to no information other than what you can access yourself with a dell account so they are usually worse than useless not to mention hugely frustrating. I hope this gets sorted out for you soon, you might want to try posting this in dells own forum you might get a pm from a dell representative who's not in a call centre which can sometimes be more productive. Let us know what happens and good luck!

I ordered mine via the UK Home user site, I have phoned Dell may times chasing it up but probably made no difference as Dell seems like a very disjointed operation nowadays....

When did you order yours? EDD? Spec?

    Two questions to XPS12 owners.

I use my new XPS12 some of the time at a desk, held in arm and attached to an external screen. When using it in this way I have two issues which i have not solved.

    1. With the laptop lid closed (laptop screen hidden) I would like to be able to power on the laptop with the sliding power button - the only way I seem to be able to do this is to slide the laptop out of its arm cradle, open it, power on, then close it and slide it back (a minor concern I admit).

    2. A more significant issue is that when i use it in this way sound is not played through the laptop speakers or via the headphone jack. I suspect the laptop is trying to output sound via the mini hdmi lead, but my screen is a monitor only with no speakers or any way to output sound. ***SOLVED THIS ONE NOW WITH A SETTING IN THE CONTROL PANEL***

I had a search on this thread for these issues but could not find them (apologies if they are answered already).

    Any help greatly appreciated.

Hello, I was wondering does anybody elses XPS 12's speakers slightly distort or produce a distortion humming at high treble/around 500Hz? My system produce a distortion at this frequency so thought I'd see if this was normal or not.

Heres a video to test this : 500 Hz Sine Wave Sample - YouTube

    Any help would be appreciated.

I believe you are talking about coil whine. That's actually a physical part of the system making that noise, not the speakers. Most XPS 12s have it. It's nothing to be worried about, it's just mainly an annoyance.

    2. right click the volume controller and left click play back devices and set it to which device you want it to play back to. It is probably switching to hdmi when you plug the monitor in.

I just spoke with second level customer care who told me their manufacturing company is waiting on LCD screens which should be delivered by Thursday this week, and hopefully my order could ship as early as next Tuesday.
I'll take this with a pinch of salt if you don't mind Dell.

    My EDD is still 04/04/13

Thanks for the reply, the issue I have is specifically from the speakers not the coil whine, at around high treble or the 500Hz range the speakers sound almost like they are blown out, a very distorted and low quality sound. I just wanted to see if this is isolated to me meaning I have faulty speakers, or if its normal which would mean the speakers are just low quality.

Thanks for sharing! I have been speaking with them as well and they told me that they are waiting for some pieces, so the LCD may are the problem.

This waiting is becoming longer than the first one. My first XPS 12 was stolen in January and, after looking it there was anything better in the market, I ordered the same one again...

Hhmmmm yeah....,I would definantly take that peice of information with a pinch of salt! I ordered mine (same spec as you) on 14th jan with an EDD of 21st Feb and its still in pre-production. I have spoken to a rep who does nothing except look at my order status online and he has said he will check again on Friday which will be the 15th, nothing will happen on Saturday/Sunday so that takes me to the 18th! Even if it goes into production on that day I won't get it by my EDD. So basically if it doesn't go into production between now and Wednesday/Thursday I won't get it on the 21st.

What did you mean by 2nd level customer care? I need to be speaking to someone with a bit more clout. No offence to the India call centre staff but they may aswell have chimps manning the phones as they have no information other than looking at my order status online and seeing the same screen I can see from home and no power to do anything at all. Dell may aswell just play a recorded message 'hi there, we don't know what's going on with your order or why it's delayed and if we did we wouldn't tell you anyway, we have no idea when you will receive your PC, so you just have to wait and pray we don't cancel it without telling you after you have waited 6 weeks and put you to the back of the que...y'all have a nice day now' .... At least I could appreciate the honesty!

I would give your account manager an email. Although if you didn't use the online webchat thingy, or phone your order in, you may not have one.
If you don't have one you could email their team and I'm sure you will get a reply from someone pretty quick. I've found Dell support to be nothing less than outstanding.... so far.

Ahh okay my misunderstanding. The XPS 12s speakers aren't that good to begin with. They aren't very loud or clear at high sound and do rattle as if they were blown out. If it is really bad, call Dell and have them replaced. That's what I did at first, and my second set of speakers was much better.

Oh well here's the continuation to my non-touch enabled screen...
I informed Customer Support that touch is working in safe mode, so maybe the problem was software/driver related.
I also informed them that every attempt at doing a renew pc/dell system restore after my initial one had failed with an unspecified error.
So they sent me the win 8 recovery dvd (duh), which I had to jump through some hoops to get onto a bootable usb drive.
After successfully recovering the installation and resetting everything (including getting rid of every driver and dell program), the issue still remained.
After installing every driver at the Dell site and applying every windows update patch, the issue still remained.

Since one of the errors in the event log says there's an issue with a "logo", i enabled testsigning by disabling secure boot in the UEFI bios, starting an admin cmd prompt and entering "bcdedit /set testsigning on", rebooted and had a working touch screen, still with some warnings in the event log about multi-touch hardware reporting incosistent contact information and some ACPI driver not able to load.

So basically I have to run unsigned drivers to get this stuff working, combined with the coil whine and annyoing touchpad I'm thinking this model is more hassle than it's worth, I'll try to get a refund and wait for the 2nd generation of touch laptops, and just get a Surface RT meanwhile.

Well my XPS12 which I ordered on the 6th Jan (EDD 14-Feb) went into Production last Friday 8th Feb so I thought that there might be a chance I would get it by the EDD, but sadly it seems to be stuck in production & I guess it will take at least 3 days to come from China so looks like I'm going to be disappointed once again...I'm not sure it would have entered Production if it didn't have an LCD waitng for it??? I so wish I hadn't gone this route now...disappointment after disappointment..and I'm half expecting it to have an issue when I do finally receive it! :-(

Just to really p***** me off I just noticed on the UK Dell website 5 minutes ago that the availability of my configuration (i5,8, 256) is down to 1 day again!!! Estimated ship date is tomorrow!!!! I've been waiting over 5 weeks and still haven't got one so how is this possible??? Take a look at the photo, the other 2 configurations have long lead times so I don't think it is a typo and they seem to change every couple of days...Probably when they get stock!!!! Not Happy! !!!!thats crazy!! The website info has to be wrong! I just got off the phone with dell, they said that the xps is a system that is having a hold up whilst waiting for parts, I asked which parts and enquired if its the touchscreen, the lady from dell said no it's the system itself then clarified by saying internal components.

It's all just crap probably and they know nothing more than we do about what the hold up is. She reckons that it will be in feb when these 'parts' come in but whether that will be the 3rd or last week of feb she doesn't know. Apparently my order has been sent for authorisation to be prioritised but I very much doubt such a system even exists, probably just something call centre people say to calm angry customers!!!

Anyway to cut a long story short if I get this laptop by my EDD it will be a miracle!! I don't mind waiting for things but my situation has become dire as my old laptop has just died and I'm now running my business from my iPhone - which isn't much fun!

Btw on the uk website on the main xps 12 page it also says this

Due to popular demand this award-winning product will not ship until Feb 22

How is that possible when 2 of the specs say 2nd April and 1 says next day delivery??
(And which award did it win anyways?)

I did try editing my previous post but it just did a second post so admin feel free to clean up my mess - thanks

I've been emailing a guy at Dell about my XPS12 and the shortage issues & UK Dell website showing availability as tomorrow on some systems. One bit of info that was interesting and may explain why we hear different things on here is that there are 3 worldwide manufacturing sites for the XPS12, If you ordered in the UK then it will be made in either China or Poland, if ordered in the USA then the Tennessee facility is used. Mine is coming from China.
He's going to investigate the Website issue as he said to me that I do have a point!!!

I think its a longer holiday. Random websites differ Wiki has it as:

Chinese New Year - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

But some places put it towards a week, with back to work on the 16th.

Then again I'm not sure what conditions Dell operates its factory under .....

Well sorry to disappoint jjdurrant, but the RAM is soldered onto the main board so you cannot upgrade it, the only thing you can upgrade is the SSD.

Torx 5 is the screw driver required to open it up, and like CoolHotCold said the RAM is soldered.
You can replace everything but the RAM and the CPU as those are both soldered.

    Hi,
Which i7 does your System have? I noticed that they recently upgraded from 3517U to 3537U did they automatically upgrade your configuration?

Order confirmation and the packing slip both put it as i7-3517U.

    So no upgrade.
