Anyone else sometimes have problems shutting the thing off?
Occasionally, I'll click on shut down, the fan will go full blast and the thing won't actually ever turn off. The screen is black, the side power light is on and the fan is running very fast. I am forced to force a shutdown by holding the power toggle.

I have an i5-3337U 8GB 256GB on the way, and while I was waiting I was doing some research to see if it's possible to squeeze some extra battery life out of this thing...
Has anyone tried using ThrottleStop to lock the multiplier and essentially underclock the CPU? I wonder how much of a difference it would make. -
WOOT!!! About time! High-five
-
ok, i downloaded all the drivers from the dell site and the machine is top notch. No more issues with touch screen and no more issues with track pad.I run the i7, 8 gb and 256 ssd and it is lightning fast, no overheating, the fan does come on occasionally but it is hardly noticed, and the speakers are incredibly loud for a laptop!
-
Agreed - I almost burst my ear drums the other day when I forgot to turn it down before putting my earphones in!
-
Exact same problem here. The xps end up very hot. Just like it gets stuck in overdrive. This happens after just closing the lid.
I'm worried about damaging the device because it happend more than one time when it was in my insulated laptop backpack.
For now I double check it every time.
Anyone contacted dell about this.

So I am sick of the wifi connectivity issues. I am constantly rebooting to simply connect to a network.
Considering the bigfoot 1202.
Will it fix the issues? Or can I try anything else here?
The wifi is the main complaint I have about the laptop. Especially waking from sleep, it simply won't connect or takes forever to do so after limited network etc... -
I am a proud owner of an XPS 12. I purchased from Best Buy, so it is the 4GB/ 128GB varient. So far so good. I am unhappy about the free space, but it was to be expected. It was around 70 ish GB out of the box.

Does anyone know about any trackpad covers? I don't like the glossiness of the trackpad, it makes my fingertip feel weird. I'd like to buy something to cover the trackpad to add some texture/traction to the trackpad.
-
So don't let it go to sleep? Did you make the network adapter power change settings easily found in this thread?
My wifi is working just peachy ... did make the adjustments to settings ... -
Look at icedawg's helpful post: http://forum.notebookreview.com/dell-xps-studio-xps/693432-xps-12-owners-lounge-112.html#post9104738

Any good dock station?
-
Just got mine, specs as follows:
i7-3537U
8GB RAM
128GB SSD
Paid 980 dollars for it in new condition from the outlet.
My impression: this laptop is fantastic. No problems with wireless or touch screen so far, but the touchpad is quite bad as everyone says. At this point I've stopped expecting a Windows laptop to come with a good trackpad, so I'm not even mad. Everything is a little off on it; it's not sensitive enough, the texture is too grippy if your finger is dry and too slick if it's sweaty, the click action takes too much pressure... ugh, not pleased at all with it. I don't have trouble with missed gestures though, I disabled palm rejection straight away.
Really happy with it overall though, great construction, fantastic keyboard, no wobble or flex, really good screen, quiet. Dell hit a home run with this laptop. If you're on the fence, buy it!
One thing though, it's not really a good tablet... it's a fantastic laptop that you can take to the couch, but it's not something like an iPad that you can walk around with. If you want a great small laptop that can moonlight as a tablet, then buy it. If you really want a tablet though, get a tablet. -
Looks like mine is due to be delivered on Monday 25h March, woot!
That will be five weeks from ordering to receiving my unit. And 1.5 weeks before my EDD. -
New trackpad driver released...
EDIT: So Dell have just been changing the dates on the old drivers to trick us into thinking there are updates... Still only version A05. Nothing new to see here. Move along :hi2: -
Almost the same for me, ordered on Feb 22 (i7/8gb/256gb), EDD for April the 10th and from UPS tracking page it seems due to arrive on Monday te 25th. Let's now hope it will work fine!
-
In Kazakhstan at 16:51 local time
-
Audio driver too... but I think those are old driver repacked
-
Yup ... a little while back Dell put all the "same old stuff" ( you can check versions ) with more recent dates ... ( well for some people they still need to update to the same old stuff if they never did it ) ...
The dell update utility apparently really really sucks and does not do any version checking of what your system is currently running on versus the versions they have listed ( with false dates ).
Amazingly bad information from Dell in my opinion and of course "caveat emptor" and protect yourself by double/triple checking ( and having tested backup and recovery strategy )! -
is the windows 8 serial number supposed to be under the metal tag?
-
Windows 8 key is programmed Into the bios for auto activation
Also the cypress drivers "a05" say they are the same as the previous version from January, not a new version !! -
So I too have problem (even after doing everything suggested here) where the wireless will drop once in a blue moon and disableing or restarting the machine fixed it.
So I created a little .bat file which disables it and then re-enables it, if anyone's interested its https://mega.co.nz/#!RoF1jQLL!G2xIEFqX37WIOEvZ_IVvtA47CWFF6s56qbrFpLxw6xQ
You may need to change the "Wi-Fi" bit to whatever your wireless name is called, to find out what the Network adaptors name is, go to desktop, right hand click on the wireless and Open Network and Sharing Centre and then click Manage Network adaptors. Or just search in the Start menu for Network Connections (under settings instead of file), once you've found the name of the Wireless just open the .bat in notepad and change the "Wi-Fi" bit in the two entries at the bottom.
But yes, in other news I've finally received mine, been waiting since the 23th of November, but it's here and working (mostly) fine. -
still stuck in Germany...
-
Yeah same here. It seemed to go half way across the planet in 20 hours, now its been in transit between Germany and the UK for 16 hours!
-
-
Trackpad can't seem to track in a straight line, the cursor is always very jittery. This is really horrible.
I don't have it.Last edited by a moderator: May 12, 2015 -
That sound like coil whine and from what it seems, most XPS 12s have it.Last edited by a moderator: May 12, 2015

I received my i7/8/256 xps 12 today and after few hours of use I can't complain at all! This machines looks and works amazingly! I just have a concern though: if I run the PC Checkup the SMART Short self test fails with error WHD16-3CX. Anyone knows why ant what does it mean? Thank you!
-
Got the trackpad straightened out; I had "Improve pointer precision" disabled.
-
I don't think however it's an hardware problem because running the dell diagnostics all tests pass smoothly. I wonder if the problem with the SMART short test is common with ssd Hard drives... any opinion?
-
Same here. Went to my local UPS depot to pick it up before work at 06:00!
Some times I will be doing stuff, then another program ive had open will pop up!
Im like, what the hell goin on!
EDIT
Yeah its doing it quite a bit now. When im swiping side to side on the mouse pad -
I told my doc ... hey doc I get a sharp pain in my side when swiping side to side ...
My doc says back "don't do that!" ... -
thanks. th dell rep (engineer level 2) said i have not been repertored anywhere in canada....
..lol
Btw if you ahv a problem with you dell machine....ask to talk with a engineer level 2 .....they have more knowledge is computers ...!
the first person you wil talk to is a ''engineer'' level 1. So if you do not want to be frustrated...ask for a level two.
i am deeling with dell since the 7 of january......
i got a replacement computer....many aprt changed...vut they sent me a compute rwith the exact same problem.
i hope they will chek the thrid computer they will send me...before they ship it.
but let's see if they will replace the second pc first....
the way i understand the problem now..iis:
they are contacting order part of dell call center in the word, to see if my problem has been reported .
if they do not found any they will say that my problem do not exist...
but this is just no sence...my problem is still there. -
And there's the coil whine!!!
-
It could be a trackpad gesture... I disabled the left edge swipe because I kept doing it by accident also. It is the same as swiping across the screen from the left edge. It pulls the previous program into focus.
Go to the mouse settings, open the Cypress trackpad settings and turn off 1 finger gestures for left edge swipe and it should all be fine... -
Yeah the swiping thing is defo a touchpad gesture, that's what is supposed to happen when u use that gesture, the last thing you were working on will replace what u are currently doing.
Oh noes about the coil whine
Apart from that ..how goes it? -
Dell's website (in Norway) mentions they need 4 days to assemble and ship an XPS 12. But after I ordered mine, the order confirmation talks about 40 days!!! (Yes, that's not a type, that is 10 times the stated estimated time!) A conversation with Dell on Twitters teaches me they are having trouble getting enough supplies of the display. Meanwhile, the website still states only 4 days. I see the American websites has 7 days delivery times.
Are other people also having to wait for more than a month, even though the websites states much shorter times? And is it common for Dell to mislead its future customers like this? I wouldn't even think this is legal, since they *know* the time stated on the website is nonsense... -
For those with experiencing the coil whine, is this something that happens from day one or did it begin occurring X amount of days into ownership?
-
Its a great device isnt it! The screen is soooo crisp and clear. It is heavy as a tablet mind. Although its running fine as it is, and there doesnt seem to be much bloatware, I keep toying with the idea of wiping it and installing a fresh copy of Win 8.
I liked Windows 8 before, but now I love it! Its definitely built for a touchscreen device. -
I got mine on Monday and I first heard it yesterday (Wednesday).
I can only hear it when the room im in is silent.
I want it to happen when I'm in bed at night, to see if it annoys the missus whilst she trying to get to sleep
Either way, I'm gonna contact Dell about it.
Anyone else thats had coil whine, thats reported it to Dell - what do they do about it? -
I've begun to run into the wireless issues. Will likely replace the card myself. It hasn't made a nuisance of itself yet but I have a feeling it will, and I don't feel like dealing with Dell just to have it replaced with another janky piece of junk Intel card.
-
Look at the well documented fixes all over this forum for wireless ... look for power setting changes ... works peachy for me!
-
On the dell uk website the estimated ship date is currently 13th April, but in my experience these dates are merely a guideline. I had to wait around 5 weeks to get mine, it probably has something to do with demand outstripping supply for touch screens and it seems to be a global problem effecting most brands not just dell. The system stays in production for a long time but once it goes into production iit will be around just over a week from that point to delivery. I think the way it works is that dell gets a probably monthly shipment of touch screens and as they come in they get allocated according to whose order was first in the list, so if you are lucky enough to order just as a shipment comes in and all the screens haven't already been allocated then you may get your order very quickly, but if all the screens have already been allocated for that shipment then you have to wait for the next monthly shipment - hence the 4 week wait plus a week or so for assembly/delivery. Well that's my theory anyway!
-
Power settings only make slight a difference. It's a bandaid fix you have to sacrifice battery life for. I think it's telling that, once you disable wireless N mode, it works perfectly. It's obvious Intel is shipping Dell (and other manufacturers) lemons.
-
good advice! i think your suggestion has fixed the occasional cursor freeze which had started to become really annoying. It may be too early to tell for sure, but it sure looks like it got straightened out
-
yes me....
they will pump you all your energy, you will past something like 25 hours to deal with them in 3 month!
They will say that nobody have the same problem in the world...ike you...they will try that you just forgot the problem....
Please write to :
[email protected]
he's the person who has my case....i changed someting like 4 times of dell technician...but he seems to be on who has the more knowledge with pc.
Explain him your problem, and say him that me (matthieu Lauzon) had the same problem as you..
i think we will both save time like this. -
Does anyone know a trick how to predefine the screen rotation. Like when switching from laptop to tablet mode I want it to automate rotate 180 degrees.
You can do this by pressing keys alt ctr arrow. But I don't want to have to make that step. And ofc won't work once screen is flipped.
Pm any have the dreaded heating after screen closure problem?

Is the March 21 touchpad update 2.5.1.42 A5 actually a new driver? Same driver number, but now A4 instead of A5.
-
I'm really considering pulling the trigger today. I'm just really curious/worried about batter life.
-
I've looked all through the Cyprus properties but I can't find the option "improve pointer precision." Please explain where this choice is located.
