Perhaps it is just my bad luck, my xps 12 was sent back to Dell for repair.
I also notice a peculiar behavior of this screen.
IR is most obvious when it is turned on after an about 30 mins off status, with highest screen brightness. At the first 1 to 2 days, the IR actually decrease when you keep the screen on. But after that, it stays longer and longer. It is also easier to notice IR with a calibrated gamma setting.

If the screen is indeed defective, it is better to know it sooner than later...

So i finally got my new panel, i was told that it was going to be the revised panel... well it was still an LG... but no one seems to know what the actual part number is for the panel. Well the technician couldn't install it properly. The holes for the hinges are misaligned. So basically i have a panel that's wedged and won't flip. I was told to send it to the nearest depot. At this point i'm done, too many horror stories and too much frustration of not having a laptop. So I'm going to demand a refund.

Did anyone else have this same issue. So far no IR, but i won't have time to test it for the next 3 days because it supposed to get shipped out to a depot within the next couple of days. I'm pissed as hell. I had high hopes for this laptop.

One of my three XPS 12's screens was just replaced. It was replaced with an LG. Device manager shows LGD0403. Image retention after a few minutes. :(

Those with the new screens without IR, what exactly was replaced? Just the LCD or did they replace the whole top half of the computer? They only replaced my LCD.

The tech came for my other 9Q33. Unfortunately this screen ALSO has IR. :(

Screen appears again as LGD0403 in device manager

I snapped the model number of the new screen KR-0RM3YV-56252-379-118B-A00
    Old screen KR-0WV501-56252-36I-10SE-A00

I didn't notice that the screens had manufacture dates listed until after the new screen was already installed so I have no idea when the new screens were manufactured. I also forgot to take pictures of the model numbers of the screens for my first 9Q33.

What a shame. I think I'll wait a month or two and try again.

After a few days with the new LCD I have only had IR then the computer is just turned on after be off for a while. If I run the checker screen test for 10 mins when I first turn on I have the IR issue. But if I run the test after the screen has been on for about 20mins then I don't see any IR (IR in cold state once warm it goes away). My old screen was a KR and the new one a CN and in device manager it shows as a generic pnp monitor but it is a LG display. Only the LCD was replaced on my unit.

Well, add me to the list of people who have the "new" model screen. No IR yet, but it's been a whopping 20 minutes so far. At this point, I don't even care if it's fixed -- "better" is good enough to make me stop worrying about it.

Sadly, a new motherboard didn't replace the weird chirping noise I get, though. The discussion thread for the problem on Dell's forums seems to be leaning towards it being an issue with Samsung SSDs. Eh, I guess I'll see what the tech says.

I must say, it's nice to have Firefox open for 20 minutes and not see the browser bar when I go to the Start screen or a video. It's not like it was ruining anything for me, but is was nonetheless a constant reminder that something wasn't quite right. That'll almost certainly be the first thing I notice if the IR comes back.

*edit* Oh, hey, different topic: anyone still having problems with wi-fi connections, here's something that appears to be working for me. Back on page 256 of this thread, Furion92 posted a link to old wi-fi driver 16.5.3.6, which fixed his connection problems. Sadly that didn't work for me. But, going all the way back to 16.1.1.13 did. Anyone with connection issues should give it a try -- it's still available for download from Dell UK here. I still get connection pauses, but that's probably just my ISP -- since I installed the driver three days ago, I haven't yet had to reset my wi-fi to restore the connection.

(If that doesn't work, I'm sure driver 7.1.5 from, like 2003 will do it, or something.)

Just had the 2nd replacement on my Ivy Bridge XPS12. This time the technician also replaced the frame and motherboard, weird.

Anyways, again, how are people finding out the actual panel number, without resorting to standing next to the tech and handing him the LCD panel box LOL :)

Had the panel replaced on my haswell xps 12 about 3 weeks ago. The IR started showing up again within 10 days or so. Not even bothered getting it replaced a second time. Asked Dell for a refund. I really did like the xps 12 but found I didn't use the tablet feature a lot so getting an xps 13 instead.

One of my two XPS 12 9Q33's which had their screens replaced last week (without the issue being resolved) now has another issue. Half of the screen is now going blank intermittently. I contacted Dell about it and they're replacing it with a different unit. Hopefully that one comes with a new screen but I doubt it.

If you haven't already, go into the Intel graphic options, power > on battery and turn off "panel self-refresh." OR, download the firmware panel update from Dell. Perhaps that's not your problem, but unless you're sure you should give those things a try -- it solved the problem for me (AFTER Dell replaced parts, which didn't solve the problem...).

Half (or about) of your screen was going black and coming back later? And that fixed it? I'd hate to lose the panel self refresh battery savings. I've installed the latest BIOS on both my XPS 9Q33's and I've only seen one of them with this issue. The 9Q23 doesn't have it.

Whatever, Dell already has a replacement in processing. Maybe that will come with a fixed screen.

EDIT: So I have just run some more tests using this pattern - http://www.marco.org/rmbp-irtest.html - and I can't see any IR problems now (even after a full 10 minutes)... I am really confused. Perhaps what I noticed before was a trick of the light... more likely though it was related to a Windows update I had just run... it was when the machine was shutting down that I saw what appeared to be IR. Perhaps the update/ shutdown process made the screen look like it was ghosting during the shutdown... The IR did look oddly uniform.

So I am happy to say my screen is NOT showing any of the obvious IR signs right now. So put me back in the 'still working' camp for the moment. Phew.

Here is my old post for context - No longer true thankfully...

Well.... My screen is now showing massive IR across the entire panel. So I can without any doubt say the new CN model screen is NOT free of IR as I had hoped.

Looks like I'm going to start looking for a new laptop. :(

My problem was black horizontal chunks that could take up anything from 10% to 90% of the screen, that could flicker briefly or be sitting there for quite a while, but only while on battery (always a sign of a glitchy power-saving mode rather than a hardware defect, but that didn't stop Dell from replacing half of my laptop anyway).

Turning off panel self-refresh fixed it for me instantly, and had no noticeable impact on my battery life; subsequent battery reports showed no noticeable change in average run-time. That said, you don't actually need to leave it off -- that's just an easy way to test the problem. If that does happen to solve the problem, downloading the firmware update fixes it, and you can re-enable self-refresh. It's a very easy way to test the nature of the problem, at any rate.

*edit*edit* Sweeeeet, Onesimus doesn't have IR after all. That makes me really happy, since I've been enjoying my IR-free experience a lot more than I expected. If he's not seeing it after a couple of weeks, that's a healthy sign.

Long time lurker on this thread. To report on the major issue, my XPS 12 9Q33 has no IR issues thus far. Bought July 2013.

My question is one I cannot find answered definitively anywhere online. Is the XPS 12 9Q33 (Haswell) display port version 1.2? Therefore supporting MST and able to use and MST hub like the Club3D one. I know Haswell is by nature but there is some speculation that each manufacturer can choose weather to pass this through to the physical port.

Just got one of my 9Q33's screen replaced a second time. This time I got CN-06P54W which people have been claiming is fixed. Manufactured 13/12/26, the old one was a KR model and manufactured 3 months earlier.

Computer has been displaying the same image for 10 minutes and so far no signs of IR but obviously that's not much time. Will update later.

I mostly post on the big thread on Dell's support forum, but I've been lurking in this thread for a while. I've seen a lot of people mentioning the CN-06P54W, and not having problems... however, I got the same model as a replacement on May 13, and it recently started showing IR again after about a week.

Here are some images I took of the label before the screen was installed: May 13, 2014 replacement - Imgur
After one week, I can see IR under two conditions:
    1. Very slight IR along the edges of the screen (especially near the Start button on the bottom left and also the Keyboard button on the bottom right)
    2. After leaving the computer off (on standby mode) for several hours, I get IR across the entire screen after a short time. It can remain in place for anywhere between 5-10 minutes. However, after about an hour of using the computer, the IR effect becomes much less pronounced.

The very slight IR in case 1 isn't obvious enough for my cell phone camera to detect, so I don't have pictures yet. I also haven't gotten around to taking pictures of case 2, since it goes away after a while. However, I can confirm that the CN-06P54W does still show IR, even if it's less severe compared to previous displays. Once I get my DSLR back, I can take some pictures of the IR... but that will be at least another week or two.

Personally I was surprised at the manufacture date of my new screen, December of 2013! They recently announced the fix but this new screen is 5 months old already. Photos

It's possible that even within the same model number some have no issues while others don't. I'm surprised how long it's taking to fix this problem. What could it possibly be? This screen size and density is nothing new. There is nothing particularly special about this LCD. It shouldn't take this long to fix. And why the heck is Dell sending out defective screens? Screens they've had since before they fixed the issue? It's just costing them a lot of money mailing screens back and fourth and paying technicians to swap them out over and over again.

My 9Q23 though is still waiting for even it's first screen replacement. They keep delaying it. First it would ship Friday, then Monday, then Thursday. The 9Q23 has other issues other than the IR such as when idle the fan runs at 100% if it was previously unplugged then plugged into the power. You need to put it to sleep and then wake it up to make it stop doing that. The EC firmware is just bad. Also the cypress touchpad is terrible. Anyone have any tips on how to get Dell to replace it with a 9Q33? They're much better. If you get a screen without IR the 9Q33 is pretty much perfect.

I've only had my new screen for a few hours now and still no IR, but my older screens showed IR after just a few minutes. I'd probably still be pretty satisfied if it just had very little IR and it faded very quickly. My X230 tablet has very minor IR, pretty much only the Windows icon on the taskbar which is white and always visible. I got my XPS 12's as refurbs for pretty cheap, and my parents are the ones using them and they don't really care about the IR. I'd be pretty upset if I paid $1500 for the i7 model and had this problem though. $650 is OK.

I'll update later with the status.

After numerous disconnects with the wireless card for my 9Q23 (Intel 6230) they agreed to replace it with a killer n card. Couple days later I get a call saying that the card is backordered. They said they will do a system exchange which I agreed to. Just found out they are shipping me a 9Q33. Hopefully no wireless issues with this card. I also had the IR issue with the screen and the screen was also backordered.

I just contacted them again about my 9Q23 since this is the third time they've missed the expected ship date for the replacement screen. Now they're saying it won't be available until May 30.
I asked for a replacement system and they agreed, but the rep said he can't guarantee it will be a 9Q33. The 9Q23 is just pretty bad overall and I hope they send a 9Q33.

Wow...The saga continues with IR with no real solution. I was hoping that Dell would address the issue, since I have to buy another laptop and like the Dell XPS line. There are posts here where techs have been out multiple times replacing the screens with other defective screens. What a waste of time for Dell and the customer.

I was considering the Dell XPS 13, but considering how Dell has handled the IR issue with the XPS 12, I think I"ll buy the Lenovo T440S instead.

You could possibly get the 9Q33 if you have wireless card issues. I was pretty adamant that I did not want a replacement with the 6230 card in it.

Supposedly NEW machines will have the fixed screen. And the fixed screen is definitely available, it's just Dell is being incredibly stupid and sending out old screens to people complaining about image retention. They should know all the old stock they have from before they got the first shipment of good screens have the issue, but they're just being incredibly stupid. Wasting their money and everyone's time.

The XPS13 doesn't suffer from IR. I think it doesn't have any major issues.

    Hi guys,
Planning to buy a monitor with a stand so I can raise it to my eye level for better comfort. I wonder what cables do I also need to buy to connect XPS 12 with a LED monitor? I want to transfer sound and picture through one cable.
    Thanks.

Mini display port to whatever the monitor has (HDMI and/or display port, I'd imagine). Should cost about $7.

And I'll just use this post to note that on day 9 with my new panel, I don't yet have any sign at all of IR. I thought I wouldn't care much, but I'm really enjoying how "clean" it feels to not have my browser bar following me around.

However, I still have a weird problem where I get an annoying crackly-static buzz when the laptop is plugged in but not charging (when at 100%), and the occasional scratchy/chirpy noise from the same place whenever the laptop is plugged in (usually under load, like when I'm playing games). I've found other reports of the same problems, but no one ever seems to mention it being fixed. I know it's not the motherboard, since that just got replaced to no effect. It comes from right under the =/+ key. If anyone has any suggestions about that, I'd welcome them. If this gets fixed and the IR stays away, I'll finally have a perfect, wonderful XPS 12.

Unfortunately, I'm having trouble finding monitors below 21" that have HDMI. This means that I will have to connect two cables from laptop to monitor - one for audio and one for video...

I'm a little surprised that monitors or any size are still made without hdmi. DVI, I guess? But, in that case buy a mini display port to whatever-the-input-is, then just run a standard audio cable from the laptop to the monitor as if you were hooking up a stereo. If there's a single cable that splits into both video and audio, I'm not familiar with it, but perhaps someone else can chime in on that.

Note, however, that any television is also a monitor with integrated audio. You might find you have better options if you include small TVs in your search.

I am considering purchasing a Dell XPS 12 from CostCo - they have an i7 8GB 256GB unit for $1,099. I have read a quite a bit of this thread and the Dell forum. Based upon the comments, one would be lead to believe the IR issue is pervasive.

    (1) Does anyone know or has a survey been conducted which would indicate what fraction of new XPS 12 units have issues with IR.
    (2) Are the newer units less susceptible to IR? (I'm assuming here that CostCo is selling new ones.)
    (3) How long has it usually taken for IR to manifest?
    (4) What fraction of XPS 12 owners are satisfied with their purchase?
    (5) Has the WiFi issues been fully resolved in the latest units? (not as concerned with this issue as I have had similar problems with Nest thermostats which were resolved with a ASUS AC66 router bios update)

I am also looking at a Lenovo Yoga 2 Pro, similar configuration. User reviews on forums would indicate less issues, although, I didn't like the flex of the screen or keyboard - prefer a more rigid unit.

I am not too concerned buying an XPS 12 through CostCo as they will fully refund the price for up to 90 days if your not satisfied. Therefore, as long as the IR or WiFi would manifest itself within 90 days, I would be protected.

Thanks for any information you can provide

    Gary

All XPS 12 units up to those made right now are very, very likely to have the IR (perhaps 100% likely, although there have been a few reports to the contrary). The ones in Costco's current inventory will almost certainly have it. It generally only takes a few days to manifest, and you'd certainly know within a few weeks. The new panel does appear to fix or greatly mitigate the problem (mine shows zero IR on day 11), but it is very unlikely to be in the machine you buy. Dell's warranty would cover a replacement panel, though.

The AC7260 wi-fi problems are universal to that chip (it's in a lot of different laptops), and remain unfixed. Some people have had success using older drivers, some have resolved the issue by changing router settings, and some have no problems in the first place. However, you cannot be certain.

The XPS 12 has got good reviews from a number of tech sites, and Dell seems to be in no rush to fix the problems -- that strongly suggests that a large majority buyers are happy with their units. Keep in mind that both the wi-fi and IR issues are a common problem in different laptops from a number of major manufacturers. The slow industry response in general points pretty strongly to the idea that most buyers don't think it's a big deal. Of course, you'll need to decide for yourself whether the problems bother you enough, but you'll definitely know within 90 days.

I have owned an XPS 12 in the past and now currently own a Yoga 2 Pro and I like the Y2P a lot more. You did mention my only gripe though, the keyboard does flex under pressure. With the yoga though, I suggest swapping out the WIFI card to a dual band AC model. I can't remember which one I ended up getting (Just do a search on these forums if you go that route) but the stock wifi card in it is really a low end piece. From what I have seen, the XPS 12 comes with an ac dual band out of the box, so that is a slight advantage (as well as the build quality of the machine). Either way, hope this helped a little. Both are very nice computers.

I have just bought a new XPS 12 to compliment my Alienware 18 and gaming desktop. I must admit it does the job very well. I was using a Surface 2. The XPS 12 is far better in everyway.

I have not had any issue with the Intel AC7260, I have 2 as I fitted one to my Alienware18, I am using a Netgear R7000 router and everything seems fine. Although I do confess for gaming I normally drop to a wired CAT6 connection.

My First impressions of the unit are very good. Finish is amazing, it feels solid, well constructed. Great screen image, nice keyboard with good back lighting. It zips along doing everything I need. I did go for the i7 8gb and 256gb SSD, it only has to run iTunes, Spotify, Office, Outlook, web browsing and some Apps and App games. I can't really say I tax the system at all though.

Sorry for the rookie question, but what is IR, when it comes to the panel Issue? Thanks. I wanted to add that I'm about to order a new Dell XPS 12 with the following specs from Amazon: I5 4200U 4GB memory and 128GB SSD all for $835.14 (I got an extra $20 off for applying for credit) with 12 month free financing and free two day shipping( for Amazon Prime customers like me). I think it's a great deal. I see the Costco deal above, but I don't have a Costco membership. How about the touchpad? is it still a little twitchy? Thanks for replies and sorry for the rookie questions that probably were answered before!
Edit : IR = image retention, like it used to happen to plasma TV's? The image gets burned in? sad. I haven't ordered the machine yet to see if you guys here think that it's still an issue. Is that why the price has gone down from like $1100 to like $870 in such little time? I bought a Yoga 2 Pro, and that has not been the case for my pc. Thanks!

Are you saying that the 9Q33 models might also have IR as the 9Q23 models?
Edit: It seems that BOTH older and newer models have the IR issue. I'm thinking twice now about ordering this machine. I already had Issues with my current machine, which was replaced twice already, so I don't want to repeat that again! I do have a 15 day return period(or longer) , but it seems like a serious hardware flaw. Funny, because all the tech sites rave about this machine, but of course, they only use it for a little while.

I've gone through 4 9Q33s, none of which had the IR problems, but two of them had the issues with the 7260.This leaves me somewhat doubtful of statements such as "All XPS 12 units up to those made right now are very, very likely to have the IR (perhaps 100% likely, although there have been a few reports to the contrary)." I've been using them since October/November thereabouts, 3 of them for at least a few months. Mostly I was most annoyed with the buzzing noise issue, and while I had multiple motherboard/fan replacements, the problem hasn't really gone away. They've allowed me to return it, but we're currently in a standoff of sorts since they won't return me my money and won't/can't send me a return label for the unit that I have with me now. (Pretty damn stupid really. I want to get out of their hair as much as they want me out of it.)

I do like the XPS 12, but Dell's terrible service and constant runarounds is pretty exhausting to deal with if you get a problematic unit.

Then you're one of those reports to the contrary. But, you're a decided, clear minority. If you go back a ways in this thread, there are actually plenty of people who didn't think they had IR until they did a proper test, at which point there it was. I'm not saying that's you, but most people see it, and some of the people who don't see it end up having it anyway. Out of a dozen XPS12 units I've seen (including two of my own), they all had clear IR, and before two weeks ago I'd never seen one that didn't. So, whether it's 100% or not, any new buyer should be ready to get a machine with IR unless it was manufactured very recently, because it's very likely to happen.
Even knowing about the IR, I'd happily buy my machine today at that price. Bear in mind that the image retention isn't permanent -- it's not damaging the screen, just putting up an annoying ghost that slowly fades. I'm sure a lot of users never even care. Just decide if it's something you can deal with (or if you'll willing to have Dell replace the panel), and if so go for it.

The new-parts-number panel is now on day 16 for me for zero signs of IR. I'm hopeful the problem is finally resolved.

Thanks for your reply. It is very tempting to get this machine for that price! What about the touchpad? I have heard that it sucks too, even after people have done updates to their driver.

I have had Issues with my Y2P, but Lenovo did everything in their power to keep me happy, so a big thumbs up for them (not that I want to go through a problematic PC again!). So hopefully I wont have to deal with Dell that way, since they seem to do poor in that area.

I actually think the touchpad is great. The only real problem was some odd things happening with two-finger scrolling, and that's all long-since been fixed as far as I know. I now consider the touchpad to be top-notch. Keep in mind that the 9Q22 (the older Ivy Bridge version) had a terrible Cypress trackpad, so touchpad complaints about that machine are very common. The Haswell Synaptics trackpad with current drivers, however, is really nice, at least on the settings I use.
Dell's service and helpfulness is fantastic. Between replacement parts and on-site service, my XPS 12 has been a black pit sucking Dell's money for eight months, and they keep cheerfully trying again. The problem with Dell is that they'll happily throw a new part at a problem without actually thinking about it. I had a motherboard and screen replacement to fix a flickering problem that could be fixed simply by disabling a (negligible and insignificant) power-saving setting. But rather than attempt to troubleshoot, Dell just pointlessly replaced parts to no effect. But, they did it happily. Dell was perfectly willing to keep replacing my panel to fix the IR, even though they must have known that it wouldn't fix anything. You can depend on Dell for cheerful, expensive parts replacements and solid onsite service; you just can't depend on Dell to actually figure out what's wrong. Fortunately, the XPS 12 is now mature enough that almost everything has been figured out already.

That was not my first post in this thread, so I was fully aware of the IR issues. The fact that it was a relatively common complaint had me examining my displays but I never noticed a problem. I always thought it was odd, but chalked it down to sheer good luck.

As for Dell's service, yes, sure, if you have the time to spare to deal with technicians coming over during office hours, by all means. I teach, and take classes at night. My time is pretty limited. I do not have the luxury of spending hours waiting for repair techs who don't show up, or show up several hours after the scheduled time. My personal "favorite" was the tech who borrowed my tools and stole them. If you consider Dell's persistence in trying to fix the issue a plus, then yes, it certainly is. Unfortunately, as mentioned, my time is severely limited, and at last count, I had spent at least 19 hours on the phone with Dell trying to work out a solution. I gave up keeping score after that.
That said, I haven't quite given up on Dell yet, as I'm also the semi-proud owner of a M6800. It's been 3 weeks and going well with that one, though I constantly reach out to touch the screen. And I definitely like my XPS 12, I just find Dell to be exceedingly exhausting to deal with.

I looked into the Y2P as well, but Lenovo's international warranty can be somewhat spotty. The color issues it was having was also a big no-no for me.

If you don't mind a refurbished model, you can pick up the same XPS 12 for substantially less than that on the Dell Outlet thanks to the current Father's Day Sale. (Priced one out for 660 including NYC tax.Thinking on it as I do want 8GB of RAM) If you call in to order, you're pretty likely to get further discounts as well. There are also a few with the i7-4650U for sale on Dell Outlet if anyone is interested.

I just ordered on of the refurbished outlet i7 9Q33 for $875... I'll probably get one of Epic Caesura's old returns! I'm willing to risk the IR. I'm an IT guy and have set up several of these for clients at work, the latest two either don't have IR or it's barely noticeable.

I think it's worth mentioning that Dell has two levels of service... they have the Pro support which includes next day on site technician parts replacement, and there's the basic support in which you must send in the machine for repair. There's a Huge difference in the two, and I highly recommend to anyone interested to pay the extra $$ for the Pro support with on site service.

My new one is arriving Monday, I'm interested to see it's issues, I'll report back. Thanks all for the great comments and info.

I appreciate your response! I narrowed my purchase between the Dell XPS 12 and the Samsun Activ 9 plus that is on sale currently 5/31/14 at Best Buy for $1083.74 for the 4GB memory 128GB I5 version. The XPS 12 has a longer battery life and it's convertible.

Does anyone here have the I7 9Q33 model? If yes, does your battery last at least 8 hrs? Thanks. Yup, Dell outlet has some deals on the I7 models. I'll have to ask what kind of warranty they offer.

I wanted to add that I'm about to order a new Dell XPS 12 with the following specs from Amazon: I5 4200U 4GB memory and 128GB SSD all for $835.

Edit : Now Amazon has a lower price for this configuration : today 05/31/14 $770.21 out the door! Very tempting indeed! Amazon pricing seems to fluctuate wildly sometimes.

There are new touchpad drivers out for the 9Q33, but be warned, I started getting blue screens of death after installing it. I would get a BSOD not every time, but frequently when flipping the screen around. And it even told me it was from SynTP.sys, so I know it was the drivers. Just reverted back to A01...

At least I got to see the new and improved windows 8.1 BSOD ;)
